Just like another reviewer, I had started with Gordo’s on Clement St. when I moved to East Bay, the college Ave location was the tops. It had been 20 years since I was in the Bay Area, and was so happy to nothing changed. Just delicious burritos. I think Gordo’s secret is steaming the tortilla with the cheese. Get it all melt. I hope it won’t be another 20 years; but if it is Gordo’s: please don’t change. 👍👍
Gordo's is a Berkeley institution. Two locations - Elmwood and Albany on Solano Avenue. It's not gourmet, not "healthy" (c'mon, fried and grilled meat with high fat beans, guac and sour cream?), not "authentic" Mexican, but tasty and inexpensive. The lines out the door at mealtimes are all the evidence you need. Limited seating, no atmosphere, except that of a brisk counter pick up place, with busy people working hard.
A little pricey but the crispy tacos are delicious!
I've beengoing to Gordos since the late 80's at their first location om Clement in SF. Always good, the grilled Quesadilla are the best with grilled chicken.
I recently had the carnitas burrito and I fear this is the greatest burrito I’ve ever consumed. New obsession.
Gordo's is legendary, and is still great after all these years. Thanks for keeping our tummies happy!
Absolute favorite spot for burritos. The food is just unbeatable.
Still the best burrito you will ever eat in your life. If you order a veggie burrito or no hot sauce, you are doing it wrong. There is a line out the door for a reason. I wish they would put the tables back in, though!
awesome delicioso and authentic Veggie quesadilla. came with a big flour tortilla and generous helping of sauteed vegetables. highly recommended. i liked the green chile hot sauce! México authentic level picante! approved! (Si se puede , raza!)
Classic no-frills mexican restaurant. Very friendly service and I received the biggest tacos I have ever seen. Quite tasty, too, and reasonably priced. I’ll come back for more.
Their tacos are my favorite, and I always get salsa, guacamole, and chips as a side. The food is never greasy and always full of flavor. My idea of good Mexican Food is when you can order a dish with meat and not bite into a piece of meat covered in fat. It's rare to find a grab and go Mexican restaurant this good, and they have more than one location. The people that work there are top notch! The line goes fast, and you can also order for pick up or delivery. Gordo Taqueria es el major taqueria en el East Bay.
In response to some of the other reviews: The pollo asado is the best I’ve ever had—perfectly cooked. If someone is afraid of, or confused by, blackness on their chicken, may I recommend Chipotle. The moisture in the burritos is part of the excellent cooking. The beans are perfect, every time, and this means that they are perfectly moist; as is the salsa, the meat, and the rice. All perfect, every time. So, yes: you won’t get a super-dry burrito, and yes, this means that if you insist on taking it home, it may degrade slightly in structure (it will be perfect if eaten in-taqueria). My friends and I have been eating these burritos for over twenty years and have enjoyed many a one at home, just a little wetter. It’s worth it to have perfectly cooked ingredients. Atmosphere. Let’s talk about atmosphere. This is one of the last not Starbucked, not third-wave-coffee-housed joints left in the Bay. If you’re uncomfortable with the small space or old-school tables and chairs, then, again, allow me to recommend Chipotle. Or Taco Bell. How about Taco Bell? They keep their revolving-door A.I. market image updated every few months. You shouldn’t be bothered by any authenticity or lasting tradition there. Bottom line: Gordo Taqueria is a Bay original. So many old authentic Bay Area eateries have been bought out, disappeared, or made unrecognizable. Please let Bay Area natives enjoy this one in peace before we flip every last space into a Tesla showroom. I am sorry to hear about poor customer service, if it’s true; and to hear that long-timers have experienced bad food service. I hope that everything is going Ok for the owners and staff during a weird, tough time in the Bay and the world. Customers do have a right to demand civil treatment and continued quality.
An ok 3.5 / 5 experience. Rounding up to 4 🫥 I understand that carrots and zucchinis in your taco burrito can throw people off. On the other hand if you want more veggies in your Mexican food, this place would be a blessing. I think they should do bell pepper and onion fajitas, instead of carrots and zucchini. I got the chicken soup burrito, which came out to $15 before tip The chicken was a little under flavored, and the beans did not have that signature Mexican umami depth to it. Overall, under spiced and missed the mark flavored, but freshly made, which is always nice. I did wish they grilled their burritos like many other Mexican places. Or just generally made it less soggy and wet. Perhaps this place is more suited for people who don’t want as many spices in their food and don’t have a pepper tolerance They do have a little kids plate for $6.50 which is nice. Seating space is very limited so take out is advised. We’ll probably give this place another shot for their tacos, but not for their burritos
Consistently good, decent portions, and open late. A very small space, geared towards takeaways, but I suppose some people dine in. What it lacks in ambience is made up for by its reliability; almost 50 years!👍
A convenient quick counter service taco joint decent for authentic tacos. No lettuce available for the tacos, but still pretty good. Seating is limited, bets for a single person (a coupe of seats in the window along a narrow wooden bar).
Gordos has somewhat fallen off since the 2010s. The burritos got smaller and the carnitas is soggy compared to what it used to be. It’s still 4 stars, but it used to be the best value in Berkeley.
I remembered this place being bomb back in the day but I ordered a super chicken burrito the other night and it was far below the average quality I'm now used to in the bay. The meat was kinda weird, whole burrito was kinda bland and the sauce was spicy but not flavorful. It was pretty cheap so I guess it worked in a late night pinch when everything else was closed but I would much rather hit one of the trucks that have mouthwatering flavor and dank sauce any day!
Really bland. I think I ordered the wrong thing. I got the shredded chicken plate and the meat was just plain boiled chicken, no flavor and very tough. They added a small amount of green sauce but it was so minimal, it hardly added anything. Beans also didn’t have any flavor. The rice was tasty and the chips were fresh and crispy, but disappointing overall.
this place use to rock but now they are cheap tacos are small and burritos have little meat in them been going here for over 20 years well time to go some place else dont waste money you be hungry still.....after spending 25 bucks there they gave me crap about hot souse
I came in. As I am ordering my burrito, with what I want and don't want. I told the girl no sour cream. The cook had made it, and saw him put sour cream. The employee responded with, "you didn't tell me, and we won't make it again. . ." I work in food and service. So I know how annoying it is when things are not communicated. So I made sure I did communicate well. She kept gas lighting me. Screw this place. Only because the manager doesn't do ish.
I don't leave bad reviews. The burritos here are terrible. Twice my steak was RAW and 75% zucchini.... Something I've never asked for in a burrito and something you don't list on the menu. Even when saying I want no veggies I end up with a bundle of damp zucchini.
I ordered 3 chicken burritos, and the meat on all 3 was burned, not grilled but burned-black. When I called the location, the owner gave me an attitude and told me to take back the burritos. Never once did the owner apologize for the inconvenience. Terrible service. I will never go back
