S U P E R B Dinner & Service We walked into Prohibition on King Street in Charleston on a crisp fall Saturday night without a reservation and were able to be seated in the rear bar area at a high top table. We we lucky as the restaurant and three bars quickly filled up with a fun crowd. We were in the middle bar (walk-up bar service and ordering only) which worked out great with the very friendly professional bar tenders. We ordered some craft beers, a great Parmesan Caesar salad, and the highlight was the manager recommended Swordfish Saltimbocca (WOW delicious). The Swordfish steak was quite large and we split the entree. The hot flavorful seafood entree came with crispy Prosciutto, sage, spinach, and roasted buttermilk puree. It was so flavorful and delicious I told the manager I could have ordered another serving! Compliments to the numerous managers on duty ensuring the guests were happy, as well as the bartenders, and serving staff. Workers obviously like working at Prohibition. We will definitely return next Charleston visit. Cheers.
I went here for a quick dinner at the bar. The service was fast, attentive and friendly, and the food was excellent. I had the smoked beef tartare with homemade salt and vinegar chips and shrimp and grits and loved them both. The atmosphere was cozy and comfortable, and enjoyed the live music. Highly recommend!
Had Sunday Brunch. Food, drinks, service, and atmosphere was awesome! 1st food: great portions and awesome flavor. They made our granddaughter a very special drink. The band playing played a wide variety of music and made brunch that much better. Haley was our server, super awesome. Thank you to Chris as well for making our experience great!
Sometimes trying new things are scary. I am here to say DO IT. We wanted to try something we hadn't had before. No way was I going to let capers stop me and now I'm glad I didn't. The deviled eggs. My lordy!! Just go ahead and order two orders to start. You won't want to share!
We had a great dining experience. , Our server, was very professional and attentive. Since we made an early reservation, we were seated immediately without any wait. The food was tasty and well-prepared. Our waitress was super sweet, got champagne and macaroons to make my daughters birthday special. We had a great time and experience. Thank you
First I must say, the chef is a gem. This kitchen put out a very fine lobster roll, which I enjoyed as an appetizer along with a short pour from the finest Pinot noir from Oregon. Next up, although hesitant at first, I ordered the filet mignon, this by the way was agreed upon by the bartender Trent Major. The filet was served rare with haricot verde’ and awesome potato scalloped. Very well paired with the reasonably priced bottle of Pinot. I would like to add a total recommendation of “100%” for attitude of both Trent, Maria and the entire staff. Life is short spend a little time at this local gem.
Perfect spot for a chill Tuesday. They have an outdoor area Perfect for photo ops! Drinks are great! They also have live music!
If you’re looking for a good place for brunch, I’d say you found it. The service is wonderful and the food is delicious. We happened to go on a day where they had live music in the main part of the restaurant. The deviled eggs were delicious and so were the sandwiches.
Best place for brunch so far. Cocktails were delicious, and the food was served quickly and was fantastic. Great food for the money. Server was attentive and friendly. Highly recommend.
Great dinner tapas style. My top two favorites that we tried were pierogis and bone marrow. Absolutely delicious. Drinks were good too. Perfect for a nice date night then going out after One thing I will say is that we had a later reservation, like 8. Then at like 10 they told us we had to move from our table because they were creating a dance floor. The place turns into like a club at night. We ended up just hanging out at the back patio to finish our drinks but I don't recommend a late reservation if you want to hang out for a while. Everything else was great though!!
Prohibition was recommended by a local. Brussels sprouts are a must! Also, the shrimp and grits were out of this world! Friendly staff, excellent service.
Intro: My family & I are here in Charleston on vacation to celebrate 2 birthdays. In short, being in a new environment within a busy city in itself is already chaotic for me being former military. Our experience with previous restaurants have not been the greatest. Customer service: Moments of stepping into Prohibition, Morgan (who we later learned is the Manager) greeted us with a very welcoming smile. Succeeded our needs by taking the time to walk to the outside seating to determine availability. Instantly we were amazed because the previous restaurants had us check seating availability ourselves. Upon sitting down, Lyric (sp) our server checked in on us with water ready. She informed us that Morgan offered us mimosas to make up for our experience wanting to reassure us that we enjoy our time here in Charleston. Lyric’s first question was to insure the party did not have allergies before recommending food options. Food: I could not wait to get to this part, the food is a work of art. Taste just as good as they looked. I do not take pictures of my food but in this case, I had to let everyone of my friends know how great the food was. The sous chef, John new to his position did a phenomenal job. Clearly shows that he is passionate about what he does. My brother is a Michelin chef, earning stars for several restaurants in NYC I understand the difficulty of his position. The food we ate: Deviled Eggs -we already knew we had to order two Charred wings -I am a wing guy; the rub, the texture, presentation far succeeded my expectations French toast -Sister in law was craving a sweet breakfast, the subtle sweetness did not overwhelm her as one would assume French toast would be very sweet Pork belly tacos -My wife wouldn’t normally finish her food (great for me) but she didn’t leave a single scrap for me. The pork was moist texture, flavorful & fulfilling Chicken & biscuit -I don’t believe my brother in law was able to taste his food with the way he scuffed it down Fried rice (not exact name) -Amazing portion, I do eat rice everyday & for this restaurant to accommodate everyone’s needs to include mine is a rarity in the restaurant business Thank you so much for an amazing experience, this is a restaurant that I can bring back home to talk about. Will definitely come back next visitation
Sippin Santa is amazing! The staff did amazing work to create this festiv holiday atmosphere.
Loved this place. Went for brunch and they had live music. Food was awesome. Had the deviled eggs and tomato soup. My friend had the chicken sandwich. We also had the Crab Rangoon toast. All amazing.
We ended up eating here for our friends bachelorette trip. The Wedge Salad was AMAZING! Also our server was so personable and was the BEST. Would 10/10 recommend!
Stopped by for a quick drinks and snack. The service was great. We got seated right away. Parking is a street parking, but if you are walking to explore the downtown area already why not drop in for a drink. Cocktails are well made and tasty. Food came out quick. Charred wings are really good. The tuna taco is fresh and flavorful. If we had more time, we would get more things to try.
Stopped in here on a Sunday afternoon while visiting Charleston. Had a great chicken sandwich and cocktails. My wife had a perfectly portioned tomato soup and grilled cheese. Couple of guys playing a guitar and mandolin - nice mix of bluegrass and covers you’ll recognize. Good service. Nice vibe.
Went for an early morning walk around downtown, and they were just opening. So we stopped in for brunch! We grabbed a seat at the back bar. I'm glad we did. The drinks and food were amazing. The shrimp and grits are the best I've had down here. No joke! They have TVs to watch the games and lounge areas outside. The bar up front is huge. Plan on stopping in for dinner sometime! Thanks for the great service!
Great bar, nice food, make sure you come when live music is on.
Great place to stop for drinks! Love the outdoor seating. Would definitely return!
Overall cocktails and dessert was our top things as a group that we liked. Derrick the server was great too. The food was decent but the atmosphere is better. :) that patio looks so dope so I will be coming back.
The name is what drew us to Prohibition but the service, food and drinks are why we decided to leave a review. Lyric was our server and she was exceptional. She gave recommendations and answered all our questions. The Cherry Sour and Margarita Fuego were incredibly well made and tasty. I highly recommend the Chilaquiles on the Brunch menu and if you try the fries, you won’t be disappointed.
Amazing bar with unlimited alcohol selection , steak was tender as cotton candy. Ben was awesome bartender/server and was extremely knowledgeable about liquor.
This place has delicious dishes. Had the brussel sprouts, the gnocchi, and the red pepper dip. Everything was flavorsome and the service was outstanding. DJ started playing at 10pm. He was excellent! This is a must!
When in Charleston, this is where you go for amazing cocktails and apps. We are not discounting the meals at all. It's just that this is where we start our King St walkanout. Have a drink and an app ( or a few) and keep walking King St doing the same at different spots but a new bar/restaurant each time along the way to keep things interesting. WARNING! Prohibition sets the bar (get it...bar)
Ate dinner.. delicious The hors d'oeuvres were amazing. Also ordered a couple adults.Christmas drinks and bought one of the special mugs and a couple shot glasses. It was a monday night and there were not very many people there. The service was phenomenal You need to go check out the pop up christmas drinks
Cocktail bar/ restaurant/ nightclub depending on the time of day. The bar staff are second to none, the cocktails are perfect and each one knows exactly what they're doing. We ate on our last day, and the food was as expertly prepared as the drinks. The service, whether at the bar or at the table is super professional, yet personable. In the evening it can get lively and loud with partiers, but it's a place we will definitely be returning to.
The most delicious cocktails. Amazing service. Erin could shake up some dishwater and I’m sure it would be incredible
We had an amazing night here! The service was incredible. The staff were so personable and thoughtful. Shoutout to Nick!
Prohibition delivered a great overall experience. The food was solid and well-executed, and the drinks were crafted with care. Service was fime, attentive, and welcoming without being overbearing. The atmosphere has a cool, upscale vibe that makes it a great spot for a night out. Definitely a place I’d return to.
This restaurant has a cool vibe and some rather yummy food. Stopped here for lunch and sat on there back patio which was very nice and chill. Got the deviled eggs, wings, and chopped cheese burger. The eggs were fantastic and highly recommend this. The wings were decent and the chopped cheese had some great flavors. The drink menu was good and had plenty of cool mixed options. The bartender made a nice expresso martini. Service was friendly, but slow, and hectic. We got our entree before our appetizer and the wings came with the check. Overall, id definitely recommend.
Old Fashioned has a suave peach twist and the Margarita Fuego was EXCELLENT: Blanco tequila, lime, Cointreau, chipotle, mango, and jalapeno - not too spicy and the mango to help curb the zip. This place is packed. We had to gravitate to the back patio bar. My main qualm was waiting over 10 minutes to order while sitting at the bar. Bachelorette parties standing over my shoulder kept getting the go ahead to order. I was about to leave had I been skipped over one more time. Also, with the name Prohibition I was expecting more 30's speakeasy aesthetics and decor... but it felt more like the stereotypical modern rustic craft cocktail bar. Not worth frequenting if that's your selling point in question. Overall, decent cocktails, some with a minor twist. The place seemed like it sponsored bachelorette parties with the amount of coordinated costumes & celebratory groups in there. Must be a prime spot to go out with your friends, not as much for an intimate outing.
My friends and partner and I went to Prohibition this past Saturday. It was pouring rain so while parking across the street was the most desirable option- it WAS close and convenient. Upon entering the restaurant we were immediately greeted and told that there was only outdoor seating available unless we wanted to wait a little while so we opted for the patio. It was covered so that was good. The reason I gave a 4 star rating is because I thought the manager could have opted to turn on a couple heaters being that it was a bit chilly with it raining and the wind was blowing a bit. Luckily we had jackets so that helped. On to the dining experience- this place has several small plate options which I’m not always crazy about due to portion sizes but the items were ordered were sufficient and we were all able to share with each other. My partner got the tomato bisque soup w/ grilled cheese and while it’s such a simple option- it was perfect and exactly what she needed to warm her up a bit. The soup was creamy and rich and the grilled cheese was crust less and had a good cheese pull. My only complaint would be that the grilled cheese could have been a little bigger. I ordered the brussel sprouts which were great. They were nice and crispy and flavorful. One of my friends ordered the baked oysters- my issue with this dish is that it only came w/ 3 and they weren’t that big- also, I never understood why restaurants don’t do appetizers like that in even numbers. The oysters were cooked perfectly and tasted great and they had a good creaminess from the cheese. The MVP of the night was the bone marrow- I had never had it before and was very hesitant to try it…until I saw it. I tried it and it was amazing! So good in fact that we ordered a 2nd order. The bone marrow was like a rich butter and the meat (I think was brisket?) that topped it was amazing as well- it was sweet and savory. We had 3 old fashioned cocktails and an espresso martini w/ an added shot of baileys which was fantastic! We’ll be back again for sure!
Cute outdoor patio seatings. The drinks were good but did not come out the same each time, the filet was delicious.
The atmosphere was very cool! But the drinks needed a little more. We found them not well balanced and had a hard time finishing them. We would’ve given a second round another chance but our waitress never came back to ask. She was wonderful but the bar needed more people working because the room wasn’t close to full or busy but she was constantly busy with different tasks. So her inattentiveness certainly was not on purpose at all. We felt bad for her. However after waiting for so long we did have to approach the bar and ask for our check. We wondered if we would have liked the second round better. The charcuterie board was truly divine! So for small bites and maybe a simple drink i do recommend it!
The location was great, and the atmosphere was amazing. There were four of us, and even though it was busy, it felt like our table was the only one there. We could hear each other without having to yell, and the service was spectacular. Try the beet infused vodka it is excellent. The food was good but it really felt like the atmosphere and service were the reason to come here.
I really enjoyed this restaurant. It has a great vibe, lots of charm, & great service. The food was decent enough & is served tapas style. It appears they usually have live music but on the night we were there, there wasn't. Cute lil' spot; I'd recommend it.
We stopped in here on a thursday night after having dinner. They had a dorman and santa out front so we knew we had to go inside and check it out. What a lovely atmosphere! The Christmas lights everywhere made it feel so festive. We sat at the bar and ordered margaritas, watching the holiday diners enjoy the evening. We absolutely adored this place and will definitely be back.
Had a wonderful lunch here. Food was delicious while we sat on the outdoor patio. Server could have been more attentive. But overall good experience.
This spot was great for dinner! Food was delicious but we were not fans of the Charcuterie board. Nothing was wrong with it just not for our taste buds. Our drinks were perfect and dinner was fabulous. Only taking off a star because they had just painted the chairs outside on the patio and unfortunately paint ruined my friends outfit by sticking to it while she was seated for dinner.
Upscale cocktail bar in Charleston with great happy hour daiquiris!
It was a Tuesday evening that the three of us girls decided to go out to eat. We chose prohibition because they have a lot of interesting appetizers that are good for sharing. The wings were really delicious! We paired several appetizers with some specialty drinks and the Warthog got the best reviews! The catch of the day was swordfish which was great and we also had the Fried chicken wedge salad which was huge. We did find the number of entrees rather limited but I guess better to do a few well than many mediocre. The service was attentive. The fro t of the restaurant was empty which surprised us... maybe a later crowd? We ate on the patio in the back and except for the flies it was lovely. I would go back.
Food and service were excellent, only complaint is the service charge for paying with a credit card. Did not realize until after I had paid, did not see any signs posted about this, and if it was in the fine print on the first receipt, it's too dark in the restaurant to even see it. I'm fine when a mom and pop coffee shop charges a fee for a credit card payment under $10 for example, but considering the typical bill at a restaurant like this, I find it ridiculous. Who carries that kind of cash on them?
*update on bottom* I was excited to visit Prohibition because I heard it had a good vibe! This was the third stop on our DIY Cocktail Crawl. There are 3 bar areas that go straight back, one is through their kitchen window. This skinny style flow makes for a bit of a crowded walk. Since the first bar was packed, we went all the way to the back patio bar. We waited a little and when we were ready to order, discovered the outside bar doesn't serve most of the cocktails on the menu we had been looking at. 🤦 Went into the middle bar, and while it was packed, we were able to get our orders in before heading all the way back into the front to sit. Sheesh! 🍹I ordered the Schrute Sour. Y'all. I don't know why I did this. I don't like beets! Since it was a beet vodka and that the drink also contained rosemary, I thought the beet might be subtle. It's not. NOT. AT. ALL. It was the only thing I tasted in my drink. Thankfully, my friend switched with me.. She had... 🍹 Carolina Wren: This was very honey forward and a welcomed change from my previous drink. Definitely sweeter but not overly so. 🍵 Hubby had the Castle Sour. He didn't like it, but I did! I felt the Jameson and vanilla were married nicely in the drink. I couldn't taste the clove and didn't miss it anyway. Overall, the cocktails were a splurge for us at $16/pop. I was a bit disappointed in them along with the ordering situation, so not sure we would go back to terribly soon. 🚽 It DID have a really nice bathroom though! 🤣🤣🤣 *12/20/25 update* We stopped in for the "Sippin' Santa" event and it was definitely all decked out! This is worth the stop just for a few good pics, if nothing else! 🍸I had the Holiday on Ice and really enjoyed it! The flavors blend well and it's not as spicy as you'd think. 🍸Hubby had the Sippin' Santa and even though rum isn't his thing, the drink was good! Overpriced, but good! It did make for some pretty cute pics. We were sad to find out they were sold out of the mugs, so we couldn't buy this guy. 🍽️ We ordered the cheese ball and the pork sliders for a little snack and were extremely underwhelmed. I didn't get any pineapple in my cheese and the ball was tiny. The sliders were salty and lacking in actual flavor. I can't recommend either of these snacks. In conclusion, come in for the atmosphere, but that's about it unless you wanna dish out a pretty penny for a fancy cocktail.
We visited this bar late night 2 years ago & had a BLAST! The DJ kept the dance floor packed. Everyone having a good time. We visited last night & it was a different vibe all together. The DJ was more interested in playing his saxophone than watching the dance floor. He would play a few good songs, dance floor full. Then a few random songs that didn’t blend in. Cleared the dance floor over & over. On top of that, we ordered 2 drinks, (doubles) & it was $60. Outrageous!!! We won’t be in rush to visit again.
Great atmosphere, great drinks, but the food is definitely made for quick-serve, tourist destination checklists. The flavors are good but everything is definitely reheated. Overall we were not impressed with the food. We came during the seasonal Christmas menu and ordered the wings, deviled eggs, crème brulee, and two cocktails. Service was great though and the vibes were very fun with all the lights.
The drinks were very good but the food is not the same as it was years ago. I had the shrimp and grits and it didn't have much flavor and that was the reason we went back. They were one of the best I had years ago. Will not be back next time we are in Charleston.
I travel ALOT and I don’t mind spending money on good food and drinks , but last night I paid $18.50 for this Tito’s & redbull and I’ve never complained about pricing ever till now , it was that strong either , no nice glass , no personality or conversation from the bartender . 0 . Nothing . The picture actually makes the glass look bigger than it was . It was one of those tiny plastic cups . Like you were getting water out of a jug at a football practice . Super cute inside and ceiling though
Not a biker friendly establishment. Had to tell them i was with the band to get service. Dining and bar full of Charleston pretentiousness. Didn't want to sit me. Ordered the crispy brussel sprouts chili-lime sauce, cilantro, pickled carrots. Burnt to a crisp more like it. Nice flavor apart from tasting to charred. It probably would have been better if they knew i was doing a review. Did go well with the beer once i stirred up the sprouts. No decent dark beers not even a local holy city Pluff Mud Porter. Guinness only, though the Pluff was on the menu 🤔. Ghost Monkey stretchy pants Kolsch local Mt pleasant beer. Decent little raised platform and sound system for live band. Be warned it is atrocious finding parking as the restaurant is on the heart of King Street downtown Charleston.
Roger that!!! Black Veterans not welcomed. Came to celebrate our anniversary, bouncer proceeded to say military/spouse ID is not good enough. Provided valid driver license and he proceeded to ask how real freedom felt like. I just wanted a beer and enjoy my time with my significant other. Bouncer made us feel unwelcomed. Thank you for that and merry Christmas!!
