Sunda, what a delicious experience 😋 I would come back for the Wagyu sticky rice alone. The Wagyu steak literally melts into a buttery, savory bite of pure goodness. Absolutely unreal. My wife is the #1 fan of the oxtail potstickers — and after trying them, I get it. Incredible flavor. The main dishes were fantastic across the board, and the whole experience felt elevated from start to finish. Can’t wait to come back!
I came here with three friends and we split all the dishes family style. As someone whose favorite vegetable is brussel sprouts and has had A LOT of them, Sundas are easily in my top 3. The Yuzu tuna, Chicken Pad Thai, Oxtail Pot Stickers, and Adobo Fried Rice Chicken were all also delicious. The Sweet Potato Caterpillar could have been better but it was the worst in a long line of great dishes. The Molten Chocolate Cake was perfect with the fruit helping balance it. Mochi was good but not in a great way. Flavors from favorite to least favorite: passionfruit, mango, coconut, matcha. Also, the waitress was phenomenal - especially with navigating the menu and figuring out what to order.
We had an outstanding experience at Sunda. A friend and I went to celebrate his birthday and we were both super impressed. The hostess and the wait staff were super friendly and thoughtful. The food tasted heavenly with huge portion sizes. I loved the steamed crispy eggplant bao buns. The ambiance is excellent. It's not super quiet but also allows people to have conversations. Amazing experience overall.
Came here for the Chinese new year celebration, absolutely amazing experience. The service was phenomenal, our server Bree was so attentive and informative, paced out the food perfectly🤌🏾. Her recommendation were spot on with the pulse of what was good. Can't stress enough that you should hear what the servers are passionate about in terms of what is good, if only because the menu being so extensive you can easily get overwhelmed. Thanks again Bree, you were so great☺️
Great location! The food was amazing the service was unbelievable! Kimberly you are the best! She's did such amazing job with our dining experience!. Food tasted so fresh and full of flavor. Highly recommend!
Loved it!!!! Great menu, great atmosphere and excellent service. What blew our mind was the cocktails and the brussel sprouts salad! It’s their best seller and I’m glad our waiter recommended it because I’ll definitely be coming back for it! I know it sounds odd but it’s that good. This restaurant is great for business dinners, large groups and date nights.
Shoutout to Martin, who was our waiter. He was a delight! The place is beautiful and unique in interior design; the employees are kind and attentive. The food was fresh and flavorful! There was a lot to choose from. The chicken insala was 10/10. The dessert options are amazing too. Will be back.
The food was absolutely amazing! The service was 100% outstanding from start to finish. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, and the managers were truly delightful. You can tell they genuinely care about their guests. I’ll definitely be coming back!
Very good all around. Got the seaweed salad (would recommend 100%), the pad Thai was pretty good. The star of the show was the Bloody Mary special, which I subbed for their coconut milk mocktail. This is a full meal itself. Also got a sushi roll which was great
Wow!!! The food is delicious 🤌🏼, worth every penny we paid for. The server accommodated for my gluten sensitivity. Most delicious fried rice I have tried. The Basa fillet was out of this world. My family truly enjoyed dining at Sunda
Exceptional experience, top tier fish quality and the music/atmosphere was an amazing vibe. Our server, Jaedon, was super attentive and friendly. Will definitely be coming back and asking for him specifically. Thanks Jaedon and team, 5/5 stars!
Once in a lifetime experience at this restaurant. Our server Carly took amazing care of us and shared many great recommendations and even brought us a special desert. Insane quality, insane menu, and just a great time. Would highly recommend and come back again soon. Wow.
Amazing food and wonderful service. They were very busy but our server took great care of us. The hamachi in broth was unbelievable. We were full but ordered a yuzu dessert anyway- we just thought it was ok. Both our specialty cocktails were great too.
We went there for Happy hour. Nobody came to our table for the first 10 minutes. After I talked to the reception, finally their service was started. The servers work as a team that we were able to ask other servers to help us. Foods were excellent.
The food was absolutely incredible. Our waitress Sasha made our entire experience by taking her time give us her personal recommendations on the menu. Each thing she recommended was 10/10 and she was so attentive to us. We can’t wait to come back to Chicago just to eat here!!
Went there during the happy hour. The food quality was amazing and the servers were extremely polite. A excellent place to visit specially if you want to enjoy sushi as it was delicious.
Sunda was a standout this weekend while my husband and I visited Chicago for the first time. We were lucky to walk in and get a two top, despite the restaurant being very busy for a Friday evening. They seated us quickly and even offered us sake shots! Our server, Caden, was so welcoming and gave us great recommendations on food and drinks. He also offered us a complimentary birthday dessert on our way out. The atmosphere was lively, on the louder side, but nothing I wouldn’t expect from a place that has a nice crowd in and out. We had a great time and hope to be back one day!
Absolutely great sushi and Asian cuisine. This place has a great vibe and service. We organized a private corporate event for 40 people and it don’t disappoint. We got a host of sushi rolls, warm appetizers, vegetarian, meats and vegan options. Every thing was well put together and delicious.
I had a great experience at Suda Dicho in Chicago! I sat at the bar, and the bartender was super friendly and welcoming. The food was absolutely delicious—full of flavor and beautifully presented. Big shoutout to the chef for the amazing taste and presentation! I’ll definitely be back. Highly recommend!
My friend recommended this place during a work trip to Chicago when I was craving something Asian fusion. We tried Bulgogi taco, oxtail dumplings, and crispy rice (which you can order half/half & I strongly recommend you do!!). For 2 ladies, that was plenty of food. My favorite was crispy rice with wagyu, and my friend loved the bulgogi taco. Heard they have great cocktails and great happy hr, but we didn't get a chance to try this time. Maybe next time :)
The bulgogi roti tacos, were quite good. The pickled onions on the top made for a nice change of flavor Korean fried chicken Steamed buns, these were spectacular. The softness of the bun and perfectly crispy fried chicken was definitely the dish that stood out the most Adobo fried rice was just fried rice, would order again but not go out of my way for it.
Carley was amazing!!! Came in town for the RSNA show and ended up coming here two days in a row because the first night was so amazing! Carley provided exceptional service and top teir food!
An amazing experience all-around!! The reservation process was straightforward and the service 👨🍳 was absolutely phenomenal!! It was actually my birthday 🎂 when I visited, and I had marked that on my reservation when booking. When I arrived at the restaurant, to my surprise, there was a birthday 🎈 card on our table and also a nice coconut 🥥 cake dessert at the end (for free)!! The food itself, though not cheap, was very high-quality, unique, and super filling. The portions were extremely generous 🎁. I was so full that I even had extras 🥡 to take home, which usually doesn't happen for me. Our waiter was also super nice and kept checking in with us to make sure it was an enjoyable ✅ experience. This is a top-notch establishment and the perfect place for a downtown meal in the Windy 🍃 City!!
Everything was amazing! Celebrated my friends birthday, and it was the best decision we made! The food was good. The service was amazing. Make sure you visit Sunda whenever you’re in Chicago.
My daughter and I came all the way from Wisconsin for the BEST japanese cuisine and BEST experience for my birthday. Our dinner was extraordinary. Really nice atmosphere. Our server Jonathan made the best recommendations and, truth be told, made me feel like I was the only customer there. Great service! Thank you so much, Jonathan!! You made this moment in my life a great memory, and I am so thankful to you! The owner thanked us for coming, and we were really warmed to get such great service. 100% I highly recommend Sunda. Great food with wonderful personal service!
Shout out to Dena. She got the portion perfect for our group of 6. Perfect service. No complaints. Dena is the best fr.
This place is always a hit! Love their pad thai! This time we tried their poke bowl too! Usually very crowded so do take a reservation before going!
One of best dinning experience in my opinion for Chicago. South eastern focus pan Asian high end dining is what I like to describe. It is busy even for Monday but we had a great time despite waiting for our feast for a quite a bit of time. You will like it!
You have to try Sunda! The ambience is great, service is amazing, and the food is exceptional! We had the Oxtail Potstickers, the Rainbow Roll, Panang Short Ribs, and the Ridiculous for dessert. Our server, Rachel, made the experience the best it could be by recommending delicious items and being unbelievably nice. We will be back anytime are in Chicago!
this was the most delectable experience ever!! all the food was so fresh it felt like i could taste its source. my friends and i were taking photos of our amazing meal and then…the manager comes over and asks if we would want to tag them in a post with one of their desserts on the house!! of course we agreed and not only was the dessert amazing but it was also vegan and gluten free along with many of the options on the menu. my friend who is vegan and gluten free and she said there was plenty of options for her and the staff was extremely accommodating! our waiter also went through the menu and explained everything in through detail since it was our first time. so overall 100/10 experience!!
I went to Sunda New Asian to kick off my solo weekend in Chicago for Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tour! I had such a memorable experience at Sunda! I wish I ordered more food. I was looking for Asian fusion and Sunda nailed it! I tried the lumpia and the Crunchy Surf and Turf roll (pictured). I was able to see the sushi and head chefs work their magic behind the scenes. I also found out Sunda is coming to my foodie hometown Detroit this summer! Can’t wait to try more spectacular Asian dishes and fun cocktails at Sunda Detroit! Special thanks to Ed and Ian for making my first (and definitely not last) experience at Sunda New Asian so fun! 🫶🏼😎
I went to this Sunda in River North last night for my birthday. I had a reservation but we were running late due to a car accident so we were 30 minutes late but i thought we were okay sincr on the app for the reservation it said the table will be held for an hour and 30 minutes. When we arrived the hostess said we did unfortunately lose our table but she will try to find us a place. Fortunately, we didn't have to wait long and we were seated within minutes so I'm very grateful for that🙏 We ordered the oxtail potstickers and the seoul wings for appetizers and those were so delicious! One of my friends is a picky eater and loved the oxtail potstickers. The cocktails as well were very delicious, especially the ube martini and the strawberry fields drink. Our server Mariam was sooo nice and patient with us and took the time to explain the dishes on the menu. We also received hamachi maki, crispy brussel sprout salad and shots on the house which was so incredibly generous!!! the service and the food was exceptional and the staff are so welcoming and nice! Thanks to Sunda for making my birthday feel very special!!🫶🏻
20250909: my colleague and I were seated right away, and our waiter was very knowledgeable and a commodating. We shared the shrimp appetizer, he had a Manhattan that he liked, and I had an Athletica NA beer for the first time, which was so-so (I much prefer the Sam Adams NA). The menu is mostly designed for sharing, and we opted for traditional entrées. I had the salmon poke bowl and my friend had the pork. We loved our food.
I’ve been coming in the Sunda for many years when I visit Chicago for business. I have never written a review on my previous visits and felt compelled to do so this time mainly due to the incredible service I received from our server, Carla. She was super thoughtful, helpful, great energy, gave great recommendations, and was super sweet. The food was great as always, and the ambience is on point. My only criticism was the volume of the music. Some folks may like it, but it was a little bit too loud for me being as I was thoroughly enjoying the conversation with my colleague. If they turn the volume Knob down just a bit, the experience would’ve been perfect.
I went here for happy hour with a friend and overall thought it was a nice spot for what it offers in the downtown area versus other options. Adobo Pork Belly Bites + Spicy Tuna hand rolls were my favorite. Though the new Lunar New Year special menu did take awhile to come, the waiter gladly honored it - which I appreciate the service. Will be coming back here in a near future.
We had such a great experience at Sunda! The food was absolutely delicious. From the starters to the entrees to the desserts - all around excellent! You’ve got to try the “ridiculous!” Our server, Moises, really made the experience a 10/10! He spent time walking through the menu with us and helped us pick out such great dishes. He made my Dad’s birthday dinner that much more special! We are thankful for him and appreciate his sincere hospitality.
Had a lovely date night here. Honestly the best part about the experience was the service (and that's saying something because the food was also amazing). Our server was Miriam and she was truly the best server I've ever had. She was attentive, kind, funny, and knowledgeable of her menu! We got shishito peppers, brussel sprouts, crunchy tuna, and bao buns with chicken and pork belly. The seating, lighting, music was also all very nicely curated. Would love to come back here!
We had an absolutely fabulous time here. Ryan was delightful, his recommendations were top notch. Additionally he made us feel so comfortable and welcomed. The food was great. The drinks were even better.. try their Expresso martini flight . You won't regret it. We were here to celebrate our anniversary and Ian and Ryan made sure we felt special. They made us feel soo special with a celebratory dessert and a delicious starter on the house.. Highly recommend this place.
Sunda is my go to spot to bring friends and family when they visit Chicago. There’s options for everyone on the menu - including myself as a vegan. Service has always been stellar and the atmosphere is elevated and chic. Only note is it’s a bit loud to talk, but everything else makes up for that. Portions are shareable (or enough for leftovers if you’re not sharing). Great drinks, mocktails, sushi, entrees, and desserts. You feel truly celebrated when you come for a birthday or anniversary. Our server, Ryan, was enthusiastic, kind, super helpful, and such a joy! Already have reservations to come back with more friends next week. Thanks Sunda!
I lived in Chicago for many years, and Sunda has always held a special place in my heart. It was one of my absolute favorite restaurants back then, so after a few years away, it only felt right to make this my first stop-and I'm so glad I did. From the moment I walked in, everything reminded me of why I loved it so much. The food was just as incredible as I remembered-beautifully prepared, full of flavor, and consistently excellent. Every bite felt like reconnecting with an old favorite. The service was exceptional, as always, but I have to give a special thank you to Moises! His hospitality truly elevated the entire experience. Not only was he attentive and warm, but the fact that he remembered me after all these years made the night incredibly special and personal. Those small but meaningful touches are what set Sunda apart. This dinner wasn't just a meal-it was a reminder of why this restaurant remains timeless. Sunda continues to deliver excellence in food, service, and atmosphere. I can't wait to be back again!
Went here a few days ago IRL for the first time after ordering takeout the week before. Such a great meal! The service was awesome. Nolan is the man, he was totally charismatic, and also helped us order and then brought the dishes in an order that gave the best experience. The food was also so so good, definitely recommend the pork belly Bao buns, and the bulgogi tacos.
Reserved a table here for my Birthday, it was a Wednesday evening and pretty packed. The atmosphere is nice, yet my table was too close to other tables that I had to be cautious all the time not to touch or hit other people from the table behind and next to us (just a bit of inconvenience but not a big deal since we're small). We ordered Signature Crispy Rice - Wagyu -- Loved it. Massaman Scallops, Panang Beef Short Rib, Tom Yum Sea Bass with both Jasmine rice and Brown rice. At first we were missing 1 bowl of rice, but after reminding the server, they brought it out, no biggie. The main dishes are nice, but the rice gave us mixed feelings. We're Asian, we eat rice on a daily basis, both Jasmine rice and brown rice, so we know that brown rice could be drier than normal rice. Jasmine rice was cooked perfectly, but the brown rice was a huge disappointment, it's too dry to even swallow or too hard to chew. With a restaurant like this, I expect better. I would still recommend the food here, just do not order brown rice.
The ambiance and service is very good. We bought the Tuna Pizza and Avocado crispy rice. We went in for brunch on a Saturday, the crowd is generally more. Avocado Crispy Rice was prepared well. The Tuna Pizza had the tuna completely raw and we didn’t like that very much. The quantity of the dishes were also very less for the price of the dish.
Was a solo diner and am sure I would have appreciated the food more if I had visited as a group. Food menu was innovative and the ingredients fresh. Was a rad disappointed with the wagyu as it wasn't as buttery as I would have hoped. Still, a great place to done, especially for groups of 4 or more!
Delicious food and mocktails, beautiful atmosphere. Service was a little slower than we would have liked, appetizers came quickly but entrees took long to come. Ryan was a very friendly and wonderful host! Definitely recommend the crispy tuna rice bites
6:30 dinner reservation (highly recommended) and the place was hopping. The food was amazing. Loved the Brussels Sprouts appetizer, Hamachi sashimi, and Toro sushi. Service was nice but the main server wasn't as attentive as I would've liked for a $150 dinner (for 2 w/ no alcohol purchased). Additional staff (bussers, food-to-table delivery, etc.) were fabulous and helpful. It has a welcoming feel and the decor is attractive but it was extremely loud and difficult to hold a conversation.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5 We stopped by Sunda during happy hour to give it a try, and overall—it was slightly above mediocre. I’d call it a mixed bag, depending on what you order. We went all in and tried nearly everything off the happy hour menu. Let’s start strong: the **Shishito Peppers** were excellent—charred just right, with a smoky kick that kept us reaching for more. The **Adobo Pork Belly Bites** were the undisputed winners: perfectly crispy, glazed in a sweet-savory soy sauce that hit all the right notes. If every dish were that good, this review might’ve had another star. Then came the **Seoul Wings**, which were… not it. The gochujang glaze had promise, but the wings tasted like they’d been deep-fried in pure chicken fat before being dunked in grease again. I managed one bite, then surrendered. The **Lumpia** were fine—crispy, pork-and-shrimp-filled little rolls that did their job but didn’t exactly earn a standing ovation. The **Nori Fries**, though, were tragic. Unseasoned, flavorless, and inexplicably sad. Probably the worst fries I’ve had anywhere. Seaweed shouldn’t make fries taste like disappointment. We also upgraded our hand roll to **Futomaki**—a shrimp tempura roll that was okay but forgettable. For a happy hour special, you’d hope for something that makes you want to come back, not something that says “good enough, I guess.” On the bright side, the drinks were solid. The spritz was fine, but the **Watermelon Margarita** absolutely delivered—fresh, balanced, and refreshing. However, the happy hour menu lists cocktails at $10, yet I was charged $14. Not exactly the kind of “happy” I was expecting. All in all, Sunda isn’t bad—but in a city like Chicago, “not bad” doesn’t really cut it. If they can bring the quality of everything up to the level of their pork belly bites, they’d have something special. Until then, I’d say it’s worth a visit once—but don’t be surprised if you end up Sunda hunting for better bites elsewhere.
Very excited to try Sunda, but unfortunately our visit didn’t quite live up to the hype. The atmosphere was very beautiful. Gorgeous decor with high vaulted ceilings. We had reservations and still waited for about 10mins for a seat. As they were Jam- packed! Literally, from the sushi bar to the regular bar with plenty of tables & high top seatings occupied! Sunda was clearly the place to be for dinner! There were couples, families, birthday celebrations just a lot going on for Sunda. Our waiter Caden was well mannered and friendly. Knew the menu very well and had a great personality. Told a few jokes and was just a decent guy all around. We ordered the Szechuan Chicken with white rice & the Crazy Rice. The Szechuan Chicken boasted in flavors, a bit more fatty than expected but was still delicious. The Crazy Rice was just a basic rice bowl with added chicken and shrimp and spicy sauce. The portion was a bit dissatisfying and slightly overpriced. The rice definitely had a KICK! The most disappointing part was that Our dishes didn’t arrive together. Awkwardly, waiting for 25mins apart was a bit ridiculous. Kinda ruin the experience and my appetite. Although vibrant and a high-energy space, unfortunately for us, it felt a bit overwhelming with how loud it was. On the bright side, the food itself was a 3/5, and showed somewhat of a promise. But when the basics of timing and ambiance are off, it’s hard to fully enjoy the meal. Hoping it was just an off night.
I visited the River North location with a group of 12, and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing given the pricing and the expectations of this area. I work in the hospitality industry and understand proper portions and execution. While the cocktails may meet the basic liquor measurements, the overall preparation and balance are poor. I had a $20 house margarita that lacked flavor and presentation, and the Aperol Spritz was noticeably small, easily half the size of what is typically served, even in fine dining. The low-quality glassware does not match a $20 cocktail. Food portions were also very small for the price (considering the restaurant category ), and the service lacked coordination. Plates were delivered in a rushed, almost aggressive manner, with staff calling out dishes in a way that felt unprofessional.
I had high hopes for this restaurant, but unfortunately the experience fell far short of expectations. The service in particular was a major disappointment. Our server, Ryan, took over 10 minutes to bring sambal for the Crab Noodles, which left the dish sitting and cooling on the table. The Sinigang Sour, which I was looking forward to as a creative take on a classic cocktail, lacked the distinct tang and complexity promised and instead resembled a standard whiskey sour. Adding to the frustration, an additional bowl of rice took another 10 minutes to arrive, by which time the food we had intended to enjoy with it was already cold. Overall, the extremely slow service turned what should have been an exciting dining experience into one of the most disappointing restaurant visits I’ve had in a long time. For the price point and the hype surrounding this restaurant, I expected far better.
