Wow, wow, wow! That’s all I can say. This is my first visit in a long while, and the experience was memorable from start to finish. I needed a local place for a hastily-arranged business lunch today, and The Chester Arms was conveniently still serving lunch at 2 PM. There’s a fresh new menu and it’s a perfect blend of pub classics and interesting alternatives. We had halloumi and calamari starters which were beautifully cooked and ideal portions. For mains we both opted for the slow-cooked pork belly which was simply sublime. The table behind us had a souvlaki dish and commented that it was superb, they even called out the chef to compliment him. Dessert? There was barely any room but we were having such a good time, we felt greedy so we shared a clementine and chocolate crème brûlée which was a novel take on one of my favourites - it works! The Chester Arms has always been a cosy and welcoming local, but with the new menu and the attentive and welcoming approach from our waitress Jenna and the staff behind the bar, it seems to have upgraded to “the next level”. I can’t wait to bring the family for a Sunday roast. Well done, Chester Arms!
Booked a table for 8 people on Saturday 11th March. The staff were amazing, very accommodating, and the service was excellent as usual. I love to book and eat here for the vegan menu. As a vegan you get sick of the only option being a flavourless bean burger, but not at The Chester Arms, this night I enjoyed tempura “cod” and chips and it was delicious! The rest of my party enjoyed their meat filled meals and the night was made special by staff joining in singing “happy birthday” to my 16 year old son. Thanks to all!
A very pleasant dining experience here for a Friday evening meal. Very welcoming and friendly service. Delicious food with a good variety of drinks. We were sharing a selection of bread (with 3 varieties) served in a bamboo steamer as a starter. The bread tasted very fresh and well toasted. For mains, I had the chickpea tagine with basmati rice. The spices in the tagine were spot on. Very delicious and filling. Another half had the pie of the day with mash and seasonal veg. The portion was very generous. Not to mention that they got a wide variety of vegan options in the menu too. The vegan paella is an eye catching one. Would definitely try that next time.
Had a great time at the Chester Arms last weekend. The vegan menu has lots of options. Kind of a humble pub grub style. They even had vegan desserts which is a novelty for me! Would love to see some more drinks options in the future, maybe some quirky beers and spirits would be a good addition. The staff were really friendly and attentive. Plenty of parking and outside seating available.
This is the best pub food I've had in my whole life, period. Everything's home-made, and tasty as hell. The vegan options are insane (forget the usual veggie curry or salad, we're talking vegan pies, vegan fish&chips, vegan puddings that are not just a scoop of strawberry sorbet, and more), and there's a plethora of them. The staff is really kind and helpful, and the mood is super cosy, feels like home, really. An absolute favourite.
This is my second time going here now after hearing all about the amazing vegan options they have, and it does not disappoint. Absolutely amazing food with loads of options for all diets, we got the vegan fish and chips and the classic burger and it was delicious! The staff are so friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere and interior is so cosy and pub-like. Loads of drinks and draught options. And it's all served so quickly. We can't recommend it enough. It is quickly becoming our new favourite pub.
Ornella and Alex first of all are tremendous individuals and a wonderful couple. They've created a warm and vibrant atmosphere in their premises. The pub is beautifully located and easy to access offering lovely surroundings and open views. You can enjoy Henry and tasty food outside or inside with the full range of beverages. The first time I visited I was treated to a Alex inspired BLT. Beautifully cooked, the lettuce was crisp, tomatoes fresh and fries wonderfully seasoned with a secret spice. For my second visit I had a Sunday mixed roast. All 3 meats of Pork, Beef and Chicken. The vegetables we cooked well and varied, carrots, Brockley, cabbage, red cabbage. The Yorkshire was both crispy and soft in the right areas but the crown for me was the gravy. Kept the whole meal moist and flavourful through out. I cant recommend Chester Arms enough as the owners are brilliant and the food is divine. You won't be dissapointed, they will make sure you leave with full bellies a wide smile and your pockets intact and prices I also found tl be very reasonable.
Had a great time at the Chester Arms. The atmosphere was very cozy andChristmassy felt like home away from home. Staff are very friendly & polite. Customer service was top tier. The food was delicious, honestly the roast was impeccable, gravy full of flavour, pleasantly surprised the portions were very generous. Great value for money great experience. Can’t wait to come back again.
We attended in a group of 8 including two children on valentine's day. They were accommodating with a late request to reschedule our booking on the day. We all enjoyed our meals including two vegans in our group. You could tell they use quality ingredients in their dishes. There was ample parking. Varied menu including specials and local products.
The Chester Arms – Alex and Ornela are fantastic hosts! This beautiful pub has such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The service is always friendly, and the food is absolutely amazing — consistently fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. One of our favourite places to visit! Highly Recommended!
Returned here with friends for our 2nd visit for lunch & certainly wasn't disappointed..... 2 x burgers & 2 x the recommended chicken & leek pie which was amazing. We we served by the lovely Jen who was very helpful & attentive....
Nice pub and atmosphere. We went for a family members birthday. The food was nice and the service was good. Hard to assess the atmosphere as we were a large party but the whole event was very enjoyable. I would definitely use this pub again.
Lovely restaurant with attentive staff and a relaxing atmosphere. Very happy as there were plenty of vegan options! Had a vegan chicken roast dinner, was delicious.
A fantastic pub with food to match. Never have had a bad experience here, friendly staff, great tasting food with plenty of options in a cosy pub atmosphere.
Offers an extensive vegan menu, including multiple options for a Sunday roast. We often book here for celebration dinners, as we are a family of predominantly vegetarians and vegans and there is always a large choice of all 3 courses. The meat eaters are also well catered for.
Recommended Enjoyed a lovely lunch with friends. Food was very good, service even better. The place has a nice comfortable feel to it.
We ended here by mistake but very glad we did! Very nice staff, lovely decor inside and nice garden. The food is delicious and they have a very impressive vegan menu.
Absolutely delicious , vegan (Lamb) Sunday Roast, vegan Cod n Chips, and apple n cherry crumble. All spot on, served by Ranjit, couldn't do enough for us, all the staff were brilliant. We'll visit again for sure
Myself, 3 friends and our dog came here for a post long walk dinner and it was the best choice! It's not often you can find a nice pub that can cater for gluten free and vegan but also with lots of normal options too! The menu was very well laid out with labels and plenty of options for everyone. We were made to feel very welcome and it was generally a nice relaxed atmosphere.
This pub was a fantastic find, the food was great, had the potted mackerel and sea bass which were presented fantastically and the flavours were great. Good selection of drinks also. Located in a quaint quite village this place is definitely worth a visit!
Good menu with an extensive range of vegan options. Food was served quick as was pudding, staff polite and friendly and can't complain about the food either. Vegan roast followed by banana fritter😋
Couldn't believe our luck finding this place on a day out. It's incredibly refreshing to find places that have separate vegan menus available and the food was delish! Staff was awesome too. Highly recommended.
What a find!!! The service was great, the food was amazing,I went for the ribs, the picture shows you the quality you get! Can't wait to come back and try some more items off the menu,if you're reading this review my advice is go you won't be disappointed 👍
Lovely surroundings and Excellent veggie, vegan and gluten free menu and great service. We will definitely be back and I would recommend to others.
Great place! Very quick and delicious food and service. Worth booking a place in advance
Had a lovely meal here. Turned up 15 minutes before the kitchen was closing but they still served 2 really tasty and well prepared meals. Very friendly staff, would happily visit again!
We had an amazing roast dinner here on Sunday. They were closing in just over an hour but still accommodated us, and the staff were lovely. Everything cooked perfectly, presently very nicely and tasted very good!
What a great find! Fantastic food in a great pub. The vegan options are wonderful. I’d recommend this to anyone and its reasonable prices too.
As many of us are vegan, my family and I came here for the incredibly inclusive menus for a birthday dinner, and we all were delightfully surprised by the staff’s friendly and accommodating service! Costa (our host) was so helpful and polite- a real asset to the team! I definitely recommend for dietary requirements such as vegan and gluten free, as well as for the beautiful pub and hardworking staff delivering such speedy service. Thank you so much!
As someone who has a dairy and egg free diet due to allergies, this place is amazing. What a vast selection I could enjoy - what a difference to basically anywhere else we go! Staff were completely on it and had full knowledge regarding allergens in each menu item, I felt reassured that they knew exactly what they were doing. They seated us in the private dining area as we were in a party of 9, including 2 babies and a young child - this was perfect as it gave us space and made us feel totally relaxed. All of our meals were very enjoyable and were of great quality. We will certainly be back!
We had an impromptu meal here today. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his roast beef dinner. Not a morsel left on his plate. I really enjoyed one of their vegan meals - vegan sausages, mash, veg and gravy - sooo delicious. We both enjoyed the vegan apple and cinnamon crumble for dessert. My husband had ice cream and I had vegan custard with mine. We can wholeheartedly say that all the food was delicious and freshly cooked. The staff were very pleasant and the restaurant and facilities were spotless. It’s so lovely to have more than one vegan option on a menu. I think there were at least 4 different choices. We will definitely return.
Fantastic service, Sunday lunch was delicious as was the apple crumble and custard. All served piping hot. Can’t recommend this place enough, sorry about the picture 🙈
I took my sister here for a birthday lunch. It was my favourite place for a long time but I stopped going last year after a couple of disappointing experiences. It was definitely an improvement on the last visit, but I'm not sure I'd make the trip on a very regular basis. The vegan options are fantastic, but I feel almost £20 for my Sunday roast (see photo) is expensive, as nice as it was. Biggest disappointment was being charged £9 for a prawn cocktail that my sister couldn't eat as it had so much paprika on that it was burning her mouth. We were told there was nothing wrong with it, it was purely her taste, and that it says on the menu that it's got paprika on. We checked the menu on the way out and it's actually not mentioned. We had our desert as takeaway because they needed the table back, and £9 for a very small brownie was also poor value. It's a shame as this is the only place I've found to offer proper vegan alternatives, but service is as important as the food to me.
Some of the most friendly staff I've experienced. The food was decent to. A nice little pub with plenty of seating and a big menu. This is one of the first country pubs I've visited where there is a menu broken into sections to include vegan, gluten free and dairy free sub menus. Although I have no need for this, it's nice to see.
We had a drink and something light to eat, white bait and mixed olives. The service was spot on and the food was very good. We intend to go back and have a starter and main meal.
Some great beers and food. Had a lovely shortcrust pie and and veggie mezzie, both delicious. The place in kind of a mix somewhere between a cafe and a pub. Will be back again hopefully.
Easy to find and a good car park. We went for lunch at 2pm on a Saturday. For the duration we were there, there were only 4 other customers. The pub and food were nice, just not great or 'special'. I would be very happy to go back again if invited and would be happy if it was my local, but I wouldn't make a trip there specifically.
I really do not enjoy leaving negative reviews, but when service has been poor, and especially when it involves something as serious as dietary requirements – I feel it’s important to share. We had sadly a really disappointing experience here. After waiting just under an hour for our food, we were served dairy cauliflower cheese despite specifically ordering and confirming the vegan version due to dietary intolerances. We only realised after starting to eat, at which point we asked the waiter if it was indeed dairy free as ordered, and he realised it wasn’t and got the correct replacement. By then, the damage had already been done. I completely appreciate that people are busy, staff are working hard, and there’s a lot going on in a restaurant environment. But this isn’t a small oversight – it’s a very serious mistake, and for the prices being charged, the standard of care and attention should be much higher. To make matters worse, the way it was handled afterwards was very poor. We were given an apology, but nothing beyond that. Two different waitresses said they would speak to the manager, but neither returned. Eventually, after sitting waiting for another 10 minutes, we went to find someone. We even had to ask for the cauliflower cheese to be taken off the bill, which really should have been a given. Overall, this was a really poor experience, both in terms of service and, more seriously, food safety. It left us with no confidence that dietary requirements are taken seriously here.
I was looking forward to the Chester Arms as have been previously but I was very disappointed on this occasion. The service was fairly inattentive considering there wasn't any other diners there, just drinkers. The food took what seemed like quite a while again especially considering we were the only diners there. But mainly, the Ribs we had were both full of cartilage and gristle and mostly not enjoyable to eat. It also said BBQ on the menu but no sign of a glaze.. £21 for a rack they should be decent! (maybe this was just a rogue batch!?) Unfortunately even after mentioning to the server the low quality of the Ribs, (and the plates were not clear as there was still a lot of the meal left) but we were still made to pay the full amount!
Should be 5 stars for the food and the gentleman who i believe owns the establishment. However my awful experience is with the waitress. Eastern european with brown hair. Treated me appallingly. It was a very hot day and i was wearing shorts and a crop top and whilst she was looking me up and down in disgust she was very rude about service in the garden on this day. Which i was already aware of however A young waiter was very helpful and gave us condiments. She just made us feel very unwelcome and her service is what has made me never want to return.
Vegans BEWARE!!! An absolute shambles. After a great first visit a few weeks ago, this time was a disaster. We waited just under an hour for food, and despite clearly stating we are vegan, we were served dairy cauliflower cheese. That’s not just careless – it’s unacceptable. Especially as we both have intolerance.. The so-called vegan garlic bread was pathetic, just three tiny slithers of bread. The roast compared with last time was night and day and not in a good way. Other tables were also complaining about the wait. Vegans beware: this place does not take vegan options seriously and clearly can’t be trusted. The only response was a simple apology – no attempt to make it right, no gesture of goodwill!!!
