Tucked away in an unassuming building on another busy street in Dallas is this gem serving up some absolutely delicious Mexican food. Needing to come up with a dinner spot for our anniversary, I looked high, low, and read numerous posts for that special restaurant. Something about all the consistent reviews and raving on and on about the flavors got my attention so El Carlos Elegante it would be! I made a reservation for Saturday at 5:00 pm for us. When we arrived, the gods were in our favor as the first parking spot of the restaurant opened up! While our reservation was for two at the bar b/c that was all that was available at the time of making the reservation, the hostess made such adjustments and got us a table. Amalia was our server and she killed it! Knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about the food and its origins, she advised us on how to maximize our first time here. We started off with the one shot appetizers which were just that - large enough for one shot. That shot, however, was packed full of mas sabor! The crab cake and Wagyu were perfect starters. From there we tried the grilled octopus which was nice. Freshly cooked over flames, we enjoyed the plating and taste. Amalia saw how much we were enjoying the food and surprised us with two beef cheek tacos on house made flour tortillas. It speaks volumes when my wife who NEVER eats beef especially beef cheek actually tried and ate half of a taco while loving it too! By this point, we were well on our way of being full, but two more dishes were on deck. The masa and squash along with the Guajillo Chicken were rich in flavors and depth. Needless to say, we finished the job and were full by the end of the lineup. There was just no more room to try their desserts! The manager Michelle stopped by and extended her well wishes for our anniversary too! All throughout the evening, it was evident the operation here is tightly run and all team members take their jobs seriously. From continually topping off drinks to clearing off plates to make way for fresh ones, numerous employees assisted Amalia to keep things moving along smoothly. By the end of the meal, we were already talking about bringing our family and friends here to enjoy in the whole experience. Thank you Amalia, Michelle and everyone for making our anniversary dinner a memorable and super enjoyable experience. We will be back soon to try the other dishes!
A truly 10/10 experience for authentic, unique and experiential Mexican food. Highly recommend for your special night out. I don’t think I’ve experienced something quite like El Carlos Elegante since I left Chicago, where there are many high end Mexican restaurants available. This place blew us all away. Between the amazing cocktails, the variety of dishes and excellent service, I already want to return. Be sure to try the grilled octopus. It’s nothing like you can imagine. It’s extremely tender, not chewy in the slightest, and has great flavor. You will be stunned. Note the only way to feasibly park your car is valet outside the front of the restaurant, but it’s free (tip of course).
Best bday dinner! This could be the best restaurant I’ve eaten at all year. The whole fish, lentils, the El Machete, guava key lime dessert….the charred octopus- everything we ate was better than the last bite. This restaurant was the highlight of our trip to Dallas. Highly recommend absolutely delicious and perfection!
LOVE THIS PLACE. Quiant and stylist, giving best hidden gem on a night out. The staff is amazing! Devonte in my homeboy now, he just doesn't know it😅 Literally the best bartender! The management is so kind, with Michelle really making me feel right at home. Let's get to the food!!! I never eat octopus. NEVER!!!! But Enrique does something outstanding with their octopus dish that's beyond anything in my wildest dreams and imagination. Because of it I'll come here forever. The machete wasn't my fave, but who cares?! The octopus is DYNAMITE. GREAT place to start of your evening. Phenomenal staff, ambiance 👌🏾, vibes🤏🏾🤏🏾🤏🏾 Took me way too long to write about this place and I can't wait to go back!
Truly such an amazing place! Went here again for my 30th birthday and it was even better than I could have imagine. Cammie was an incredible waitress! The food, service and atmosphere cannot be beat. We did the chefs special (which we usually do) and I cannot recommend it enough. You get a taste of everything and leave sooo full yet still wanting more. We will definitely be back!
We have been wanting to check this place out for a while and let me say it did not disappoint. We did the elegante experience and wow. One reviewer complained that the portions were full sized entrees not prix fixed portions (and honestly, I'm not sure why she would complain about too much food). Yes, you get a healthy portion and you will want to eat every last morsel. Each dish was presented beautifully and the flavor balance was on point. We added the duck cherry mole because I wanted to try a mole dish. Absolutely, fantastic -- from the ambiance, the staff and the food. This is a must for any foodie.
Firstly, the entrance is a little tricky. Go around the backside of the building. The door facing the main road leads to a bar, where I suspect the dudes kindly ask, "Are you looking for the restaurant?" 5-10 times a day. Now, more importantly, the food: Think of the most stylish person you know in real life who isn't dripping money. Think of the ways they layer patterns, textures, and colors together to make coherent outfits you never would have dared piecing together. That's what every single dish at El Carlos is like. From the bite-sized brisket to the delicately decked desserts, you'll find a citrusy surprise or a sneaky sweetness that works wildly well together. The wait staff was impeccable in helping us first-timers order, with an eye on allergies. The water was constantly filled and the empty plates were unobtrusively cleared. We could not have asked for a better experience, with the exception of the lighting (and the entrance). Surely the craftsmen behind this Dallas diamond can figure out a way to maintain the "elegante" hole-in-the-wall mood without forcing its guests back to the days of reading by candlelight. Still, we want to come back and would recommend El Carlos to anyone looking for real Mexican food. (Cross posted on Yelp)
The drinks were excellent, well balanced and thoughtfully crafted. The food was full of flavor. The carne asada was perfectly cooked and packed with bold, smoky taste, and the octopus was a standout—tender, beautifully charred, and seasoned just right. The menu feels elevated but still approachable, and everything we tried felt intentional and refined. Overall, a classy spot with tasty mexican food and a great atmosphere.
Omg where do I begin, my boyfriend and I came for the elegante experience and it was FANTASTIC. The servers were very informative and explained to us what each of our dishes were. They told us that some of the dishes were on the menu and some were chef’s picks so the menu changes often. My boyfriend and I were blown away with each dish everything was so delicious and unbelievable. In between courses they even brought us a sorbet palette cleanser which I didn’t expect and was a nice touch. The vibes and the atmosphere were 10/10 the playlist that evening(which I learned was the bartender’s playlist) was SO GOOD. The bartender was such a vibe. We are definitely coming back for this experience!
Exceeded every expectation. The food was absolutely amazing—every single dish was thoughtfully prepared and packed with flavor. We did the Elegante Experience, where the chef curates a selection of dishes, many of which aren’t even on the menu, and it truly felt like a one-of-a-kind, elevated dining experience. The restaurant itself has an incredible vibe—beautiful decor, great music, and a very upscale yet welcoming atmosphere. It’s perfect for a date night, girls’ night out, or even a fancy dinner with family. The staff was outstanding and made the night even more special. A huge thank you to Joseph and Michelle for making the evening unforgettable. Highly recommend—this is a must-visit spot if you’re looking for something special.
We dined at El Carlos Elegante as part of the Chase Sapphire Reserve OpenTable Benefits. We were blown away in the quality of service and food at this restaurant. The dishes on the menu are in order from smallest to largest and definitely can be shareable. The restaurant has complimentary valet which allows you to call for your vehicle via text and you can tip on there as well. Overall, we enjoyed our experience here and will be back! Highly recommend making a reservation, especially during the weekend
From the moment I walked in, I knew this place was different. This isn’t your typical “Mexican food” spot — this is the kind of food that makes you feel like you’re back in your abuelita’s kitchen. Everything was unbelievably authentic. The drinks were perfectly crafted. And the food? I can honestly say it took me straight back to my ancestors. Every bite was full of real flavor, real tradition, real Mexico. It wasn’t just a meal, it was an experience — the kind that stays with you. I highly recommend trying a little bit of everything, especially the appetizers and a couple of their drinks. I can’t rave about this place enough. Truly one of the best culinary experiences I’ve ever had. I can’t wait to come back. Five stars, without a doubt.
After hearing many great things about El Carlos Elegante, we finally made it over there. The atmosphere inside is really nice and well thought out. It is moody and upscale but still approachable and perfect for a date night. We enjoyed the El Carlitos margarita and thought the hickory salt was an interesting but solid add. We started off with the surf and turf & crab cake one bite starters. Both were excellent but the crab cake was our favorite. We then got the salmon ceviche and chorizo molotes. Both were also very good and I found there were many interesting flavor layers within both but especially the molotes. The portions overall here are on the smaller and more expensive side but I still found it worth coming here and enjoyed the experience.
Absolutely spectacular from top to bottom! The ambience was elevated, the service was attentive and welcoming and the food was incredible. I had the carne asada, and without resorting to hyperbole- this was probably the best carne asada I’ve ever had. Highly recommend!
Fantastic location for a special occasion (or anytime)! My BF brought me here for my birthday. The ambiance is excellent. Luis H was our server and he was incredibly personable and charming. The signature margarita was so good! (And powerful) Each dish was excellent. Our favorite El Machete. 🙌🏼 portions were great and I couldn't finish. Thank you Louis and staff for making it extra special.
Absolutely phenomenal. Everyone in my party of 7 agreed this was the best meal we’ve had in years. Absolutely recommend the personal bites, pulpo, broccolini, and everything else in between. Definitely go here and share everything with everyone.
This experience was all around incredible...! Made a last minute decision to try and dine at El Carlos Elegante. The hostess was very nice and explained they were pretty booked for the evening but I could squeeze in at the bar area and if someone opened up they would let me know. Let's also mention that this spot is a total vibe! So I took the possiblity of the opportunity to dine at this Michelin Star Dallas Restaurant. I sat at the bar, chatted with the bartender and decided on a Jamaica Mezcal Margarita. Before shortly after being informed they had a table become available! Once I was seated the menu was explained and I made my menu selections. I choose the One Hitter Brisket, which included avocado puree, queso fresco, the broccolini with carrot sauce, figs, corn nuts and the Guajillo Chicken paired with mole madre, potato hash, and handmade masa. Everything was *chef's kiss* delicious!!! Rich flavors, premium ingredients, and you could definitely understand why they have been recognized by the Michelin Guide. I absolutely recommend trying the restaurant, and I will definitely be back to try out more of the menu or the "Elegante Experience".
The amazing experience after the UPS Store.....Liza and I needed to go to the UPS store in Dallas (Design district), so we took an Uber, we got out, and immediately we got a delicious fragrance of GOOD FOOD...we walked around the block and found a stylishly fresh designed gem of a restaurant "El Carlos Elegante". Everything that followed was a superlative of the previous.... The welcoming hostess, the charming restaurant manager/owner, our waiter Luis Hernandez, the croquetas, the suculent chicken & Mole all the way to the chocolate and cookie dessert. Each dish was unique and filled with flavors. All in all an amazing experience. Strongly recommended to anybody looking for a delicious & enjoyable dinning experience - Anthony.
This is an absolutely incredible spot for some absolutely incredible food. Their imported blue corn is not just for show—they incorporate it into the menu in several places where appropriate and it works every time. Their tequila and mezcal menu is absolutely gigantic, too, so tequila nerds will have something to do. The dining room is intimate and moody, if a touch loud on account of the music, and the staff all know the menu inside and out. It's a pretty penny for a date or family dinner, but worth every cent!
Definitely a place you should add to your list of places to eat in Dallas. My first time there I had the elegante experience, it’s a great option if you want to try a bit of everything. It’s a prefixed dinner with an option from every part of the menu, and a few things that are not on the menu. Everything was amazing! Our favorite was the tamales (which our served explained that at the moment you could only get if you purchased the experience), and the machetes. I’ve been back a couple of times and tried pretty much Everything on their menu, the mole is great, their carne asada is delicious but the machetes, molotes and their brisket appetizers are def my fav! So do yourself a favor and make reservations!
My visit to El Carlos Elegante in Dallas was an absolute dream from start to finish! From the moment we walked in, the service was impeccable – even before we officially checked in, we saw the bartender spontaneously jump to the hostess stand when she briefly stepped away, just to make sure we were immediately greeted. This level of attentiveness was a theme throughout the night, and it really showed how much the staff looked after one another and had great chemistry. Every team member was genuinely friendly and incredibly attentive, making us feel truly valued. And the food? Oh my goodness, the food! The delivery of our order was seamless and perfectly timed, and each dish was a magnificent work of art. We opted for the "Elegante Experience" and it was beyond fantastic. I honestly couldn't believe the sheer quantity of high-quality food and generous servings we received. Every bite was bursting with incredible flavors, showcasing true culinary mastery. El Carlos Elegante has truly set a new standard for dining. It's a must-visit for anyone looking for an extraordinary meal coupled with an unforgettable experience. We left feeling completely delighted and already planning our next return!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5) This is a fine-dining Mexican restaurant with creative, thoughtfully presented dishes, located in the Uptown area. The overall atmosphere is nice and fits the concept well. We ordered the 8-course tasting menu, and most of the food was very good. Course highlights: • Salmon ceviche was excellent — very fresh with a light chili and lemon flavor. • Crab claws (we ordered two) were small but very fresh, served with an avocado green sauce. Even our 15-month-old loved them. • Okra & shishitos tasted good, though the dish only had three pieces of okra and was mostly shishitos. Not spicy at all. • Octopus had a nice wood-smoked flavor and a well-balanced sauce, but it was slightly too salty. • Hacoyo (duck dish) — despite being labeled as duck confit, it’s not the traditional French style. The duck was inside a pie, topped with fresh tomato and orange slices. Very bright and spring-like flavors. • Halibut was very clean and light, cooked gently with just the right warmth and texture. • Machete was more like a giant taco, filled with beef and pork belly — hearty and flavorful. Overall, the food quality and flavors were strong. However, the service was a bit below expectations for a high-end restaurant. There were a few times when we couldn’t find our waiter when we needed assistance. With an automatic 20% gratuity added for four adults, the service did not fully match that level. In summary, the food was enjoyable and well executed, but the service could use improvement to truly match the restaurant’s upscale positioning.
We visited El Carlos Elegante as part of their partnership with the Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits. Menu is small and fits on one page. Starting at the top of the page, all of the items are in very small portion sizes, but the further down you go the larger the portion sizes get. The food is served with the intention of sharing. I would not advise ordering your own plates, order a bit of what sounds good and share. Atmosphere was very loud. It was hard to talk and hear each other. Service was good quality. You will need a reservation and be prepared to spend a good amount. But the food is good!!
Went to El Carlos for DFW restaurant week! The first thing to notice is that the restaurant is super dark inside, when the food comes out you need go pull out a light if you want to fully see the colors, intricacies, etc. Reminds me of how dark it is inside of Las Palmas at night. Ambiance aside, it took a little while for our waiter to come by and greet us/take any orders. The food was tasty and felt fresh and well prepared overall. Ordered the Guajillo chicken and asked for a side of the pineapple salsa which added some depth to the flavor profile which was somewhat one-note with only the mole sauce. They brought our fresh mini tortillas with the entrees. The refried lentils were really good and so was the salmon ceviche. By far my favorite item from the night was the Mexican chocolate - chocolate mousse is my favorite dessert and the texture of this dish was a nice thick consistency with smooth and balanced flavor. My friend got the key lime dessert and that was really nice too! I know people absolutely swear by this place, but in my opinion it does feel a bit overpriced for what you get.
My husband I are foodies and enjoy trying places in Dallas (for reference we have been to The Mexican, Javier’s, The Monarch, The Charles, Mister Charles, Evelyn’s - to name a few)! We were excited to try El Carlos Elegante to add it to our rotation but we were underwhelmed. The service was not great - for how much you spend per person, I expected to be a bit better. We waited 15mins to be greeted at our table, then another 15-20mins to get our drinks (we got one of our appetizers before our drinks showed up). The food was alright - the brisket bites were probably my favorite, wish they were a little bigger. We ordered the salmon ceviche, brisket bite, surf & turf bite, el machete, and the grilled al pastor. If we came again, would order the Brisket bites and the machete, the rest of the items we ordered were ok.
