Great food and drinks, amazing customer service. Sister’s time got a table close to the bar and TV’s and we were able to have a nice conversation. Plus there is a lot of free parking since is in the same parking lot at the mall in Escondido. Take advantage of their happy hours 😁
Food it’s ok, drinks are good. Service, ambience and prices really good. I highly recommend.
Absolutely amazing service from our server Melissa, and her support staff Anastasio and Javier!! Manager Cesar was wonderful! Our food was top notch! Everything was delish!!
I recently dined at On the Border Mexican Grill and Cantina in Escondido, and it was a delightful experience! This restaurant is a great spot to enjoy authentic Mexican food. The staff were friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The food was fantastic, though it did take a little time to be served. However, that was perfectly fine, as we were happy to wait for such delicious offerings. One highlight was the guacamole, which is made fresh right next to your table—what a fun and interactive touch! I highly recommend On the Border for anyone craving Mexican cuisine. The combination of great food and friendly service makes it a wonderful dining choice!
My wife happened to get a gift card from work so we decided to go out for dinner. Neither one if us had ever been there. We were hoping to have a out a 30 minute wait since we were going out around 630 in the evening. We were pleasantly surprised that we were able to get seated immediately. A waitress came to our table within 2 minutes and took our drink order. I got a Coronarita and my wife stuck with water. The drinks came out super fast and gave us just enough time to order. I got the ultimate fajitas, my wife got enchiladas suizas and we ordered nachos for our toddler. We also ordered a queso dip as an appetizer. The food came out faster than expected and was delicious! Of course my wife picked off my plate since I tend to choose the better food, lol. Overall it was a great restaurant and we will definitely be going back even if it's just for drinks, buy list likely we'll split the fajitas!

Food is good but not notable. The server was generally available but was overdue a few times, perhaps due to too many others he needed to take care of.
Hard to find an on the border around san Diego now. But on the way back home from the San Diego Safari Park we saw this. No way it's still open!? So we drove up and to our surprise it was. We decided to go in and have a bite. Took them a while to seat us and it was busy. More people to serve then they had servers. But they did a good job with the workers they had, they were very friendly. The food was good, definitely not the best Mexican food you can have. But brought some good memories from years ago. We ordered a couple beers and the queso and guac for an appetizer. The queso was just regular nacho cheese but good. I got a combination plate that had 4 items and rice and beans and girlfriend chose the pick 3 items. Combination plate included: mini chimichanga, hard taco, green chicken enchilada, and a red cheese enchilada. Pick 3 included: rice and beans, green pork enchilada, chile relleno, and hard taco. Out of those items our favorites were, the beans, chile relleno, cheese enchilada, pork enchilada, and the hard taco. I would definitely go back if where in the area and want a quick Mexican meal and have a bit a time on our hands.
Not authentic Mexican food, but a good alternative. It falls more inline with commercial grade America Mexican food that we all know. The food had a slightly bland flavor that was easily remedied by a little salsa they bring to the table when you first sit down. The service was quick and the decor was basic, but fun. The chips they brought to table were a bit bland and stale. I sure do miss the large hand cut and fried ones they used to serve. Over all... Not bad, but a lot of other options for really good authentic Mexican food just right up the street.
Update: Dealing with food allergies appears to be server dependent. Our server tonight was very patient and double checked various dishes for jalapeño content for me. I was able to eat without disaster, which is great! OTB is always reliable. The happy hour menu is great. Being allergic to jalapeños makes it challenging to eat in Mexican restaurants in CA. However, I expect the staff to be willing and able to check wuth the kitchen to be sure my order is safe for me.
I took my mom to this restaurant simply because of the cute cantina appearance on the exterior. It was in a word: inviting. I hoped that the service and food would be as nice and make us want to return again in the future. Oh, and it was. As soon as we were seated, we were presented with a bowl of chips lightly salted, and our separate bowls of salsa. Or should I say, “Spicy hot salsa?” Yum!We sat for a bit longer than I preferred before our orders were taken, but once Jesus was aware of our presence and desire to order, he was on it. He made sure that we were completely satisfied and made a few rounds just in case we wanted anything at all. I like that. The food is 70% of what a review is all about, right? So let’s talk food. It was scrumptious! Absolutely inviting and a pleasant party in my mouth. We ordered the Border Queso Beef Enchiladas. My mom got ground beef that she was in Heaven with. I got shredded beef, and let me tell you, they did not skimp on the filling. I’m attaching a photo to show you just how filled those soft corn tortillas were. We got our money’s worth and will definitely be there again for that plate of wonderful. We ordered Pineapple Rum Punch drinks. Don’t be fooled by the great flavor and no aftertaste of alcohol. There is rum in there, but such a perfect blend of flavors that you’ll want another. I only had one because I had to drive, but man I wish I could duplicate that at home! I loved it. In the end, if you visit this cantina bar and grill, you will be like us… you’ll want to return in the very near future. The food was well worth the price and the service was good. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5, is the limited offering for wheelchair accessible persons. The hostess had to figure out how to best seat us, and placed us at an end table, removing a chair. Had that table already been taken, I’m not too sure where we would have sat. Doing this limited the walkway, but did not block it, so I was okay with it. Visit this place and tell ‘em’ TC Freebird sent you. It may not get you a discount, but the plate is worth every dollar. I am proof of that. I never finish a plate of food. I get full fast, but I killed that plate! The rice and beans were perfect, which I’ve not been able to say about other cantinas. And the enchiladas? I’m telling you, you’ll scream out loud in joy before you realize what you’ve done. Delish!!
Everyone was very nice, we got seated right away and we were a big group. The queso fundido and empanadas were really good. The enchiladas weren’t that great. The grilled chicken plate was okay. I’d get it again without the tomato sauce on top. Maybe just pico. The veggies on the side were good

My husband and I are at times craving Mexican food. The Escondido location is convenient. Three stars is my average grade for an average chain. Over the last 10 years, both food and service have been both good and bad. But we still go back and hope for the best 🤣 . We eat early to benefit Happy Hour and meal deals and we usually sit in bar area but occasionally go to the dining room. Both have TV viewing and never a wait for table.
I like the food, but I wish Escondido would optimize their ability to take orders for carry-out. This location does not take online orders, and when I call, I’m either put on hold indefinitely or no one answers the phone. I imagine they must be understaffed, which is too bad.
Honestly $71 for what we ordered and received is almost laughable. 3 of us ate and I ordered a mixed drink and queso. My chicken was likely butterflied and cut in half . The portions are sad. For $19...give me the breast not half the breast. Just now noticing a "surcharge" of 3.5%. What's that for? Covid relief? Inflation relief? Please!! You'll price yourself out of patrons. Friendly staff and food tasted decent but not sure I'll come back. There is no value and the surcharge is a slap in the face.

My wife & I just left after eating there for the first (and last) time. Beautiful restaurant and service was good. But the food was the worst we've had in many years. The beef taco was so greasy it was inedible. The refried beans seemed to be full of lard and cold, also inedible. I much rather give a place a great review, but I couldn't write this one fast enough. Hopefully it was a fluke.
Never coming back here the food was not good got the California tacos they were just gross and tasted weird the chips are alright the water tastes like straight dirt. Got home and got terrible food poisoning from this place as well stomach never hurt so bad shaking typing this. This place sucks don’t go. (Edit) writing more on this review because a friend that was also with me got food poisoning aswell from the same dish (California tacos) . Don’t wanna imagine what was in that causing me to stay up for 3 hours in extreme pain. I will never be back and will tell everyone I know to avoid this place.
We come here often, but this visit was a total deception. We always sit at the bar area so that we can be watching the games.. Anyways, it took the waitress 17 minutes to come and ask us what we wanted to drink. And after we put the order for the drinks, it took another twenty minutes for her to bring us our drinks and some chips. So when she brought us a drink, I told her that we were ready to place our order and oh boy, that was another roller coaster moment. I order the combination that has a chile Relleno and enchilada with rice and beans, the rice was so cold and hard. All that I was able to eat was half of the enchilada and my boyfriend's dish was a disaster. And all The Times that we have gone there We have always left satisfied and motivated to go back but after this, I don't think that we will go anymore
Our order was to go . We ordered two dinner quesadillas one chicken and one brisket. I have never seen so much grease on quesadillas in my life . My son couldn’t eat them because there was so much grease his stomach started to get upset. What happened to On The Border.very disappointed 😔
