Mr. Chen’s is the GOAT! 🐐I love their spicy chicken stir fry. Shoutout to the staff too who is always friendly and attentive! Best Asian place in Birmingham!
Recently, my wife and I ate lunch here. Spectacular is an understatement. The Chong Qing fish with tofu was over the top and very delicious. The fried fish with black bean sauce was just sublime. We cannot wait to go back and explore!
Excellent Chinese Food. Fresh and seasoned appropriately. I ordered a half roasted duck which was so tender and plated beautifully. I also tried the sweet pea leaves. Very tender greens seasoned with light garlic sauce. Love loved the greens. I also ordered the Kung Pao Chicken. Very tasty lightly spiced with, peanuts, mushrooms and zucchini in a light sauce. All Came with 2 orders of steamed rice and was packaged to go, as I was traveling back to MS. I enjoyed a chicken egg roll that was fresh and filled with lots of chicken in a crispy roll and was hot. Could have ate a second one. Everything was remarkably delicious and the young lady who took my order was patient and explained the different dishes. This was my second time to order from Mr. Chen’s. I dined in the first time. The Restaurant is tastefully decorated and is uniquely located inside the Homewood Chinese Grocery Store. Next time I go to Birmingham I want to purchase some of the produce and other items that appeared fresh and healthy from the store, which had an abundance and variety of items not found in your typical grocery store. Well worth making a stop.
Authentic Chinese food that hits the spot! For the best experience, order a few dishes and share with a group. The portions are meant for family style. I would recommend the salt and pepper squid! Even when we eat family style, we always have a lot of food left over. Great spot to stop and eat and do some groceries. The restaurant is located inside of the Asian grocery market. The restrooms are actually in the market and they aren’t always the cleanest.
They have lots of authentic Chinese dishes as well as the common ones. Highly recommend to try authentic ones. Portions are more than enough for 2 folks per dish on many dishes. Waiters explain nicely what's what. Also look online for the pictures. Entrance is through a huge Asian grocery store but that's about it...once inside the decor etc is very modern and well kept.
This restaurant is located inside the heart of a fully authentic Chinese grocery store. Upon walking in we were greeted by the welcoming staff and taken to our table. Orders were placed and we chose different variations of their noodle soup. The meat was tender and the broth was delicious and flavorful. When I tell you this bowl was big I mean it two people most likely could not finish it. I left, full and satisfied, eager to return on my next trip. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic Chinese food and environment.
This place is amazing. The food is phenomenal -hot and fresh every time that I've ever been with a huge selection of the best Asian dishes in Birmingham. The Asian market is a massive and full of various international cuisine items that you just won't find anywhere else. I highly recommend a visit and you'll see great reason to return.
We enjoyed our lunch and found the menu large. They have numerous selections to choose from. The service was good and food was delicious. Servings were plentiful as well. We will definitely be back. Urban Cowgill October 2022
Mr Chens Restaurant is a small hidden gem inside the Hometown Supermarket in Homewood. I enjoyed the chicken lo mein for lunch. The restaurant was clean and quiet when I visited and there wasn’t a feeling of being rushed out as a few friends and I were chatting after eating. Overall, the food was enjoyed and the prices are generous for the portion sizes. I would come back to try more of the menu!
Overall Rating: 3.2 out of 5. Let me just start off by saying that the location is great. Love the look of the restaurant. It is connected to a grocery store. I came here twice for lunch. The food looks really good, unfortunately outside of looks there's really not much else to say. Rice by itself is bland, had to mix it with the chicken to give it some kind of flavor and make it edible. General Tso's Chicken, pictured here, is supposed to be spicy and it was unfortunately not spicy at all. Chicken also was bland and soggy. Some of the pieces were slightly powdery, making me think they were not cooked properly or the chicken was too cold when they deep fried it causing the coating to not be crispy. I did not finish the meal, to me it was not edible with it being so soggy. Chicken Egg roll was surprisingly good, crisp, and tasted fresh. Overpriced based on my experience especially considering they have no lunch menu at the moment.
GREAT dining room for this genre. The food is a dissapointment if you like Red Pearl or Buford Highway. The grocery part is much nicer than Super Oriental Market with Red Pearl... I guess this is a good choice for folks to be weaned off P.F. Chang and sticky sweet entrees. I gave them a couple chances. Red Pearl has my heart....or at least my palate/stomach.
Overall the food was good, but after the meal was over. One of the servers followed me into the supermarket after I paid my bill and demanded a tip in front of the person I went to dinner with. I was heavily embarrassed. I love the food and atmosphere but that left a sour taste in my mouth.
Was in town for business and after a day of traveling, felt like getting some Chinese food. Idea was good, choice of restaurant NOT SO GOOD! Ordered sesame chicken and rice plus an egg roll. Chicken had MORE FAT than the meat itself! Rice was UNDERCOOKED! Egg roll felt like Aldi type of food. With tip I paid $23. Not coming back surely!
I ordered the combination low mein which should include chicken, beef and shrimp. What a JOKE!!!! There was only two shrimps, a few pieces of chicken and very little beef but you get 10 lbs of noodles. Never again🤬
Ordered on - June 16 around 7:30-8 something pm Had the green apple slushy try using something called a hairnet when making drinks or food for people and check the cups literally check the inside to make sure it is hair free before using it to make someone’s drink There was hair in my boba drink the one they usually seal at the top Like that is disguising and how can you miss that? Like when putting the boba how did you miss that ? I really hate having hair in my food or drink it’s what I hate the most in the world it’s disgusting literally even it is my hair in the food I would stop eating it not to talk of a whole strangers hair in my drink so nasty and disgusting and unhygienic
So yeah, this place a NO. I was told my rice was pre cooked so I couldn’t modify it, then when my order came out, my food was placed across from me with no words and he walked off… , server asked was everything good, i said no, i asked if peas and carrots cane in it you said no, and then i couldn’t send the rice back, proceeds to tell me i can eat everything else and pick them out.
