I’ve gone here multiple times and the food is delicious. I’ve had cumin lamb, cabbage and vermicelli (it’s really glass noodles), winter melon and egg soup (it’s actually fried egg and not egg drop), seafood tofu, salt and pepper ribs, and steamed fish (it was drowning in its sauce). The staff was friendly and great. I will definitely come back here.
Love this place! You have to try their traditional Hunan dishes. I brought my office colleagues here visiting from Europe and they loved it - such authentic Hunan flavors
Gotta love a restaurant that has pictures for all their dishes on the menu. Here's what you must order: -Sauteed sour potato. I've made this at home and was amazed at how thin the potatoes were sliced. The thinness and flavor will enhance any other dish that you order, must have!! -Dried pot with family tofu. The sauce has an amazing flavor. This dish kept on giving, I was just expecting a marinated tofu dish. There's a few wonderful surprises in there that I won't spoil, just order it and try it! -Twice cooked pork w string bean. Don't worry if your spice tolerance is low, it's not that spicy.
Great authentic Hu Nan food. Don’t let the look discourage you from entering and trying out their dishes and you won’t be disappointed! We tried the chef special frog leg dish, rice noodles, pork peppers stir fry and a special vegetable, everything is so tasty. Price was also reasonable! You can get big bowl of free rice if dine in and can refill as needed! Highly recommend to anyone who’s into spicy and authentic Chinese food. I wish to go there more often.
My cousin and I were roaming around Bellaire (an Asian-dominated area of Houston) looking for a new place to try and we pulled into one of the many strips with multiple Chinese or Vietnamese restaurants, and we settled on Central China. And wow, talk about a hidden gem! The menu was very intimidating as its a massive menu with over 100 items, and this is authentic Hunan food so you're not going to see things like "General Tso's Chicken" or "Broccoli Beef" on it. I ended up getting the Cumin Lamb with Cilantro and my cousin got the Fried Stinky Tofu. The lamb was absolutely delicious (though I ordered it to be mild, not too spicy though the waiter struggles a bit in English so I used hand gestures to help) and the cilantro/cumin was fresh. My cousin had never tried tofu before, much less the famed "stinky" tofu, but he enjoyed it as well (also ordered it mild). The outside of this building is kind of boring and generic, but the inside feels like you could be somewhere in the Hunan province. Do not be afraid to try this restaurant- it will be the closest you'll get to being in China while in Houston!
As a person who is not addicted to enjoying spicy food, this is one of my fave restaurants in Chinatown. (It's too tasty to care abt they're spicy or not)
Awesome Hunan cuisine. Super flavorful. Also great service and fair prices!
Very authentic Hunan food, I highly recommend! The portions are large and the dishes are good. There's a special happyhour at lunch time!
I had the shredded pork with bean curd and celery, very refreshing, didn’t weigh me down. Nice flavors especially the ginger. Yum, nice cute clean restaurant, friendly staff, great service.
I am from Hunan province, China. These are authentic Hunan food! Wanna cry for its taste! All the memory of my hometown.

Went with a friend. Food was fast and flavorful/spicy. Portions were pretty good but a bit oily. There were a lot of good dishes. Be prepared for lots of peppers. The meats were fresh. Some dishes were a little salty but would be perfect beer food. We wanted fried chicken wings with no sauce for the kids and they delivered; there was a good batter and they put in scallions and ginger (surprisingly good). They may want to put this on the menu.
Food was fresh and hot (temperature). The taste was relatively authentic. Much of the seasoning was the LaoGanMa canned chilli (its a famous chilli brand). The meat was all presoaked in cornstarch to soften it. One of the dish I had was a bit too oily and salty. Portions are good. I am 200lbs and ate two main dishes by myself along with a tiny bit of rice. If you like rice then you will have extra to take home. Wait time was about 20 min after I ordered (Tue night).
Good food, but heavy/oily. Service was good, the server helped us pick since one of us is veggie and we have a kid who obviously can't handle the spicy stuff (though I love it). Probably won't be rushing back there, but glad I went.
I love the decor, and the food is authentic. The restaurant is very clean, and food are tasty.
It is authentic Hunan food, love the fish head, taste just like you can get it in China.

The marinated chicken I will rate 0..it is way far from the photo..I can't even explain the taste, so much crushed bone in it, aside from the taste is bad it is so dry too. I feel like eating a rubber
We had a disappointing experience today. We ordered this dish among other 3 dishes. It came in lukewarm, iron plate is not hot let alone sizzling. The dish is covered in oil( you can get a glimpse from the pool in the spoon). Also, the oil that floats in the dish tasted funny and my husband and I had upset stomach after the meal.
Bro there’s barely meat in this dish honestly I dump the soup out cuz I can’t grab anything with hot soup on top bro I spend 20bucks on it

Their food made me feel completely weak, bedridden for two days, and I had diarrhea for three days. I even found things like stones in the food before. It’s shocking that a place selling such terrible food has been able to stay in business for so long.🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Terrible Experience - Avoid if You Can I recently dined at spicy chinese food-滋味湖南 (9/5/2023)and I must say it was a truly disappointing experience. I ordered the famous Sichuan dish, "剁椒鱼头," and it was far from the mouthwatering experience I had hoped for. First and foremost, the fish head was incredibly fishy, to the point where it was almost unbearable to eat. The pungent smell and taste of fish overwhelmed the dish, making it nearly inedible. I've had this dish at other places and it's never been this bad. Additionally, the service was appalling. The waitstaff seemed disinterested in attending to our table, and when we voiced our concerns about the food, they were dismissive and unhelpful. It's essential for a restaurant to listen to its customers and address their concerns, but that was certainly not the case here. Overall, I would strongly advise against dining at spicy chinese food(滋味湖南). The poor quality of the food, combined with the unhelpful and inattentive service, made this a regrettable dining experience. Save your time and money, and look for better options in the area.
