I LOVVVVE this restaurant. The service is better than other much more $$$ steakhouses in Houston - the staff makes you feel like you are a VIP. Also, the food is all really well cooked & delicious. I ordered the ribs & was not disappointed!

One of our most favorite places to dine when we are in Houston. You must try the grilled artichokes and the prime rib sandwich. I promise you won't be disappointed! I also adore the kale salad with the peanut dressing - so good!!

Devon was an amazing waiter. He always cheek up on us and explained everything in a welcoming mood. The food honestly was disappointing . The burger meat was too little, the bread too much and too starchy. If you pay 28 dollars for a burger, I feel like it should be equivalent to the price. The one redeeming factor was the steak. Hawaiian steak medium was a nice little treat that tasted like Korean bbq. Ambiance was nice quite proper and formal. Be aware they only seat 4, and you’re not allowed to be on the phone while eating.

I've enjoyed dining at J. Alexander’s & Houston's restaurant, now known as Hillstone, for many years. While I find the food to be just okay, their service is exceptional. It's clear that their training program epitomizes hospitality. I particularly appreciate how the hostesses walk more slowly when escorting older adults to their tables, rather than rushing. The staff is always present on the floor, smiling as they move about, even when they don't have tables to attend to. Each server greets guests with a friendly "hello" as they arrive. Lastly, I genuinely appreciate when servers carry a crumber in their apron for cleaning off tables—call me old school, but I think it's a nice touch! Everyone here seems truly happy to assist with any questions.

Scooby Dumb

Went to Hillstone for dinner this evening (2/22/25). Our waitress, Judea, greeted us - very friendly and chipper. She checked on us intermittently to make sure everything was ok. Service was great and the food was delish (French dip roast beef sandwich au jus and the redfish dish). Not a lot of wait time. The place was busy and the noise is noticeable in the main dining area (we were seated in the booths away from the main dining area which was not as loud). We don’t frequent this restaurant but when we do visit, it’s been consistently very good. Highly recommended!

It’s a classic and it never fails. The food is amazing, the service is watchful, the ambiance is cozy and nice. The artichoke and spinach dip as an appetizer is 10/10, as well as the grilled artichokes that are perfectly cooked. the entrees are all great. I recommend the Hawaiian steak or the veggie burger. And the apple pecan cobbler is out of this world:

Had a fantastic night out with friends at Hillstone! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ It’s got that perfect blend of a high-energy vibe and top-tier hospitality that makes for a great evening. The Highlights * Service & Vibe: The staff was absolutely spot on—attentive without being overbearing. The location has a great atmosphere, and the cocktail area looked so inviting; we definitely want to grab a drink there next time. 🍸✨ * The Standout Sides: Surprisingly, the vegetable and side dishes stole the show! The Brussels sprouts and the potatoes were the best things we ate all night. Seriously, don't skip them. 🥗🥔 The Mains While the food was good overall, the main courses felt a bit more "average" compared to the hype: * The Ribs: Definitely the winner of the three mains we tried. Tender and flavorful. 🍖 * Pork Chop & Hawaiian Steak: Both were decent, but didn't quite hit that "must-order" level for us this time around. 🥩 Final Thoughts We’re definitely coming back! We caught a whiff of the rotisserie chicken on the way out and it smelled (and looked) incredible, so that’s already at the top of our list for the next visit. 🍗 A solid experience for a fun night out with great company!

Hawaiian steak was legit. Very rich but definitely good. Wife enjoyed her salad. Spinach dip was just okay for me but maybe cos my expectations were too high going in seeing everyone get it and post about it. Solid place nonetheless. But Houston’s restaurant scene is competitive so other places I’d probably go over this.

We asked for the burger to be well done, although it was Rare Almost medium, rare not much on rare food lol The ribs was good, although there were Cold not hot. The lady that escorted us to the table was very kind loved her The waiter that was waiting us was good too service was good although the food wasn’t the best give it 6 out of 10.

We attempted to dine here recently, only to discover that you do not have any high chairs or booster seats available for children. I grew up coming to this location, and wanted to introduce my children to what I always regarded as great food. This was extremely disappointing to find out that you all do not provide any accommodations for children, which is extremely off putting to families. We will not be back, we will not recommend, and you all have lost what could have been loyal customers over a lack of basic accommodations to make families comfortable when dining. Please reconsider this standard you have set.

Been so disappointed every time we go there wanting the old Houston’s. What a joke. Service is bad food is bad. We tried to just get a salad to go this last time, this is what you get for $28. Had this salad many times, this was the last straw. “Seared” tuna was raw and there was literally no avocado in the seared tuna avocado salad. Amazing how cheap they were with the cabbage too. Go elsewhere. Shameful how they have destroyed what used to be a good restaurant.

I have been coming to Hillstone group restaurants ever since I was a kid in the 90s. I had such an awful experience last night that I had to write a review. I had just had a newborn and my mom was coming into town to visit - we wanted to order from our favorite restaurant. My husband went to Hillstone to place his togo order with the hostess. It was very disorganized and he waited for over an hour for the food. When he arrived at our house, my mom’s meal was missing and they messed up a few other of the items as well. I called the restaurant to alert them of their mistake and spoke with the manager. She did not seem to care and said she would look into it and call me back. My husband went to a different restaurant to pick up my mom’s dinner. I never got a call back so I followed up this morning and spoke with a very rude and unprofessional manager named Hanna. I told her I never got a call back last night and I would like a refund for our meal and poor customer service. She very rudely demanded the ticket number and I explained we do not have that - I gave her all the other pertinent information. I told her I was dissatisfied with the service. She said she will call me at the end of the day and very rudely hung up on me as I was still explaining what happened. I have never experienced such poor customer service and will never be returning or recommending this restaurant to anyone. Their poor attitude ruined our night.

This was by far the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I have been coming to Hillstone for many years and have always remembered this restaurant by the excellent service. However, this evening I attended with my husband, sister, and 21 month old daughter. My daughter began to cry and before I could console her, a staff member comes over and does not allow me to do what a mother should to get her to stop crying, and instead appears pretentious making it seem like my daughter was a nuisance. Then she goes over to the manager and begins to look over at our table making us all feel unwanted. I was unable to eat my food as it had just gotten there because of the way the staff would look over at our table and talk made us feel like we were unwelcome. Naturally, this is not an inviting or warm feeling. After sharing with them how they made us feel and not being able to even eat, they were unapologetic and appeared unbothered. They handed us the bill without an ounce of compassion. It is imperative in this industry to be mindful of facial expressions and how you come across to others. I am extremely disappointed in this establishment.

We were looking forward to this meal as a family of 5, but unfortunately the experience did not live up to the expectations. Several dishes made us concerned around the meats’ freshness. The trout had a fishy taste and was not seasoned well. It came skin side down leaving it soggy. The shrimp cocktail had a strong fishy smell as soon as it arrived at the table. The rotisserie chicken in the Caesar salad also tasted like it had been sitting for some time. Additionally, the menu notes that steaks ordered medium-well or above aren’t guaranteed (which I find odd, customers should have the option of ordering their steaks however they like..), yet our steak which we ordered medium-rare, came out medium. The inconsistency, combined with the food quality issues, made the value hard to justify for the price. The best thing I tasted all night was the coleslaw that came with the trout. Service was polite, but the overall approach felt more rigid than expected for this type of restaurant.
