What a great experience! The ordering style is unique (order the meat first and then go inside and grab your sides). No FORKS allowed (only spoons and knives. Very family friendly with great customer service and authentic food. If you are looking for a great spot with a “down home” feeling, this is the place.
This is a Barbecue restaurant so if you want some delicious smoked meats this is your spot. They do have large areas for birthday parties, but I'm not sure if you have to reserve them. It's a first come first serve type seating. If you are a history buff then this is a place for you. A lot of history here in Lockhart, Texas and this barbecue family that started here goes a long way back as well.
We got the brisket, turkey, and jalapeño sausage. The brisket was fall-apart juicy and the turkey was so tender and delicious. We didn’t get any sides besides pickles and jalapeños, but we didn’t get the banana pudding - theirs kept the nilla wafers separate. No forks is the moto and the reality, so come with clean hands. Credit cards accepted, saw some reviews said cash/check only.
The burnt ends ! ! ! The best. Everything was delicious and rendered perfectly. Brisket, ribs, sausage, prime. The staff were happy to chat with me about everything from the post oak they used to smoke the meats to how long the the meats sit in the smoker to the building's storied history. Had an amazing time that I really wasn't expecting! A surprise gem under the Texas Sun! Thank you to the staff and esp Ricardo for the history. I'll be back for sure.
I love the old Texas vibes of the dining area. Plenty of room, with extremely friendly and attentive staff. The ONLY reason the food didn't get 5 stars is due to the ribs and brisket being slightly dry but no lack in the flavor department at all!!!! And tasty potato salad and Mac and cheese were the perfect complement for meats that didn't need a drop of sauce! I will definitely be a return customer.
What’s not to like about Smitty’s? I love their BBQ. Great for special occasions too! Their brisket is always moist, tender and well seasoned. Perfect smoke ring, bark and flavor. Their sausage rings hands down are the best in Texas! No joke! They have that exceptional crisp snap when you bite into them and the texture and flavor is amazing.
One of the oldest BBQ places in south central Texas. A family owned restaurant in the heart of historic downtown Lockhart, Tx. I like to think that I am a BBQ enthusiast and this place is not only old school but some of the best BBQ in the state. Located between Austin and San Antonio. If you are looking for a nice drive and some excellent smoked meats, PLEASE give this place a visit.
Depot Village had an exceptional experience at Smitty’s Market. The food was outstanding, with incredibly flavorful barbecue that truly stood out. The service was excellent, with friendly and attentive staff making sure we had everything we needed. The atmosphere was authentic and inviting, perfect for enjoying a delicious meal. We dined in for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Highly recommend Smitty’s Market for anyone looking for a top-notch barbecue experience! Amazing ribs and sausage. Great brisket as well. Brisket was very smokey which i like but not quite as fally aparty as i would prefer -- tho some folks like it with more chew.

Still doing it old school, Smitty's is good, reliable BBQ. This former Texas Monthly star is passed it's heyday, but it can still produce. The brisket was good, though it may have been reheated. Ribs were tender with a nice spice, but not fall off the bone. They didn’t have sugar in the rub, which I appreciate. The sausage was good, if a bit greasy. Service was very friendly. They let us stay a few minutes past closing time to watch the rest of a football game. My son and I are on our 3rd BBQ trip through the hill country. First time we’ve been to Smitty’s. My ratings, on a 1-10 scale: Ribs- 8.5 Brisket- 8 Sausage- 8.5 My son's ratings: Ribs- 8.5 Brisket- 8.5 Sausage- 9
Been coming for years, almost a family tradition by now. Lean brisket was a little dry however fatty beef brisket made up for it in taste and Smokey flavor. For sure recommend at least once if you never tried!
Smitty's is a great old school Texas BBQ experience. Went on a tour during the morning and ate lunch afterwards. Very cool place with lots of history. Ordering the meats straight from the pits was awesome. Foodwise the sausage and brisket are very good. Sides are not bad. Prices aren't terrible either.
We visited this place for the very first time. The outside of the building is not fancy at all. We weren't even sure if the door was the actual entrance. Once you walk in, you walk into a couple of fire pits and grills, and this is where you order the meat. The brisket and jalapeño sausage were both great. The pork ribs were good-a little dry. The cream corn and potato salad were really good. The inside part where you eat was really nice. It was a little strange to pay for the meat first and then pay for the sides once you got inside to the other building. Overall, we had a good experience here and enjoyed some very good BBQ.
Stopped here and got ribs, brisket and sausage to go. Very disappointing and no flavor. Sausage like other postings was pitiful.

One of the best bbq places in Texas was off its mark on this day. For first timers you’ll want to enter and go down the long hallway and to the right to order and pay for your meat first. Be aware …
Is the “no forks” thing a liability issue? Did someone injure themselves on one of your plastic forks? Because I just had some of the toughest, driest brisket I’ve ever had in my life, and I think the only thing that made it at all palatable was soaking it in the knock off Rudy’s bbq sauce this place serves. Exceptional ribs and wonderful, flavorful sausage. So, I’m incredibly thankful I had no need to drown either in the knock off Rudy’s bbq sauce. The sides were meh, the pickles were soft. I implore someone with an actual stake in this restaurant to visit the store and try the brisket. It should be criminal to charge brisket prices for the shoe leather this place serves. I’m guessing anyone that cared about their legacy in this place has no direct involvement anymore, but I personally would be embarrassed that anything associated with my name served such a poor caliber of brisket to anyone. I wouldn’t eat that brisket again, even if someone offered it to me for free. I didn’t even bring the remaining brisket home for our dogs. My takeaway from this for anyone that wants to eat here: Get some pork ribs, get some sausage. Both are worth the money. Steer clear of the brisket, please. Skip sides unless you just have to have them. The tea was fresh.
The charm of this place comes from its total lack of frills. I can get behind this. The pit room is a sight to behold. Unfortunately I was let down by the main event. Brisket – seasoned well, but totally undercooked and cut with the grain. Couldn't have pulled it apart if my dog had been holding the other end. There's also something to be said about how a place that prides itself on being old school gets all it's sides premade from big brands. The only standout was the sausage – nice bite and real meaty. I'd get a few links to go and enjoy with some mustard and crackers at home.
I really don’t like to leave bad reviews BUT…. I think I am being generous saying that this was not the best experience for BBQ yet in Lockhart. The bathrooms were very dirty and that is not a good sign. The food was ok but all the sides seamed to be from a can and boxes, not freshly made. Plus’s you have to pay for the pickles and onions. The brisket was a bit dry but good flavor, the sausage was very greasy, but the turkey was moist and flavorful. I did like their BBQ sauce it was a bit thicker , less vinegary more peppery then the other places we went in Lockhart. Be aware that they do not have forks only spoons and knives. The atmosphere was ok but nothing special just two big rooms with wooden tables and metal foldable chairs. They do have ice cream that we did not try.🥰

Dry, somewhat tasteless brisket, same with the prime rib. At least the Jalapeño sausage was good. service was excellent but didn't make up for the blah food. Will give them another try some day.
This was my second time in the afternoon with friends (1st time was pre-COVID and the foods were AMAZING). I had a brisket, a lean shoulder, and a sausage. Brisket was not warm/hot and was not soft to my surprise. I asked them if this was brisket and they said yes. Lean shoulder was not warm/hot either. Oh, it was grave disappointment. Don’t get me wrong, their flavors were good. Sausage- perfect and it wasn’t cold! I also had a lemon pie- delicious! I might not return again for any meat except sausage. I dunno why they serve “cold” meat…was it leftover because they didn’t look like they came out “fresh”??
Went here on my birthday and paid over 60$ for some of the driest brisket I have ever had. Also got stared at the entire time I was eating by a creepy waitress. Guys at the pit were nice but once you get past that expect zero customer service. The sausage was good and seeing the pit once was cool.

Smitty's Market: Lockhart's Smoked Meats – Tradition with a Twist
Alright, let's talk barbecue in Lockhart. You know the drill, this town is practically synonymous with smoked meats, and a visit often feels like stepping back in time. One of the institutions that often sparks lively debate is Smitty's Market. It's a place steeped in history, where the aroma of wood smoke clings to everything, and the experience is as much about the tradition as it is about the plate in front of you. For many, Smitty's is more than just a restaurant; it's a cornerstone, a pl...
Lockhart's Smitty's Market: A Meaty Tradition with a Twist
Alright, let's talk about Smitty's Market in Lockhart. You know, the kind of place that's practically etched into the DNA of Central Texas barbecue. It’s got that storied history, that unmistakable aroma that hits you even before you walk through the doors, and for many, it's been a family pilgrimage for generations. Now, I’ve heard a few things lately, and it seems not every visit is hitting that legendary mark. Some folks, particularly those grabbing their grub to go, have walked away feeli
