Best Japanese food in South Bay (that I can afford). Feels like I'm eating in Japan, and that's saying something as I'm fussy about my Japanese food. Having said that the food is still a little bit too sweet, American style, but apart from that good rice, good oshinko, and good flavour bases.
Good for Valentines last minute choice. HojiBurle was perfect mild flavor and a relief after finding excess sugar in every meal out. Yellow tail roll was fresh The miso eggplant was too sweet. Wagyu was lightly seasoned and perfect medium rare. Authentic Izakaya!
Great service and a great place for Japanese food and skewers (beef tongue & chicken gizzards are amazing!)! The custard and the black sesame Panna cotta are also a must! Espetinhos maravillosos!
Love the beef tongue. IIRC It's not on the menu but you can order directly. Also the tofu soup dish is very delicious. And most skewers I tried. Super friendly staff. To save time, make sure you reserve a spot online (esp during the busy hours).
I’ve been dining at this restaurant for several years, and it has never disappointed me.The food quality has remained consistently excellent, with every dish prepared fresh and full of flavor. The service is just as friendly, attentive, and welcoming every time. It’s rare to find a place that maintains such high standards year after year, and I truly appreciate their commitment to both great food and warm hospitality. This is a restaurant I can always count on, whether for a casual meal or a special occasion.
very good food. Large portions. For 2 people, we ordered 6 dishes. We probably could have ordered 4 and been just enough because I was so full! I like how the food comes out slowly so you can enjoy the food. The vegetable tempura was very generous portions, also the chicken karrage! Loved the eel omelette.
I ordered skewers: thigh with negi onion, a classic, pork belly with garlic sauce and shishito peppers. I recently came back from Japan a couple months ago. I went to a chicken specific restaurant called ToriKizoku or Chicken Noble (translated). Best yakitori I've ever had. Having that in my memory, I was blown away that Sumika's Yakitori and other meats were just as delicious as the ones I had in Japan. I just had to take the same order home to my Japanese mother to try. I finished it off with an Agedashi tofu. I've never been a fan of it since I was a kid but it's my mom's favorite so I saw it a lot growing up. Next time I'm here, I am definitely ordering that again. It was melt in your mouth tofu with just enough tempura breading covering it to give a texture element. The dashi broth was sweet and salty cresting an umami explosion in my mouth as I ascended to paradise. (I mightve been a little hungry) Overall. My first time experience was amazing and I will definitely be back. Hopefully next time with my Mom.
Delicious yakitori served at this downtown Los Altos restaurant. All the beef, pork, chicken, and scallops skewers were well-seasoned and well-cooked. The veggie skewers were also tasty, and perfect with the beers on tap. Plenty of free parking within a 5-minute walk. Fast and efficient service.
It's a cozy restaurant with a nice selection of tapas and skewers. We tried the house special squid fries, veggie tempura, green onion chicken kebab, sori, American beef kebab, and spicy boneless chicken karaage. Everything was fantastic—5/5, except the beef kebab, which we'd rate 3.5/5. If you're not a fan of spice, skip the spicy karaage 😄. The atmosphere is warm, and the staff is friendly 😊.
Update 11/2023 We made a reservation for lunch so not much wait. And we had a salmon fry bento 🍱 and a wagyu steak lunch set, they’re delicious! We came for skewers but they don’t offer them for lunch. The rice was good. But if you are going for skewers, I suggest you to make a reservation in advance for dinner since there is usually a super long wait.
Best make reservations in advance as its usually full. The service is excellent and friendly without too much interruption. The food is excellent and brought me back to those years in Japan many a yakito places. The yakitori selection is traditional with several appetizers that are excellent. We started with Agedashi Tofu, kabocha (Japanese pumpkin), Dashi Maki Tamago (egg) all with a classic flavor that had ecellent umami. The Yakitori skews were all excellent and we tried to sample as many as possible. The sake choices were excellent and poured in the traditional glass with beautiful lacquered Masu and of course "Mori koboshi" or mokkiri for short. I recommend the daiginjo of course. We were too full for dessert and next time I would like to try the salad appetizer which comes piled high like a 5 story pagoda.
You can smell the charcoal when you walk into this place! The yakitori was really good! The seasoning was perfect to bring out the flavour of the ingredients! The meat was very tender as well. The tamago was good too, with a running inside. The wait for the yakitori is a bit long and the food was pricey.
Food is great. Lots people on a Thursday night. Service is fast once you sit down. I think yelp should update the pricing point. We ate half full and spent $100 for 2 people. No wine. Google reviews showed $20-$30. That is very misleading. Please update all your $20-$30 to $40-$80 with all the inflation going on
We walked in on a Saturday evening at 5:30pm and managed to get a seat at the counter. Casual vibes with cute Japanese decor, nice that you can see the chef grilling from the counter. Skewers are all pretty good, texture of the meat is good, seasoning is mild, wish everything could be slightly saltier. Favorite would be the grilled rice ball, very crispy on the outside and goes so well with the pickles on the side.
Great restaurant in Los Altos. We came on a Saturday for lunch and it was busy but we were able to get seated right away. We got the salad, a few chicken skewers (all amazing), the rice ball and the set menu with the steak. We had a small issue with the salad which was resolved promptly but otherwise, incredible meal. Staff is also extremely respectful, professional, and friendly.
We went here for dinner to try some Japanese style grilled skewers. When we got there at 6:15pm the place wasn't busy but as our meal progressed they did have a line. Anyways, we had the chicken karage which was crispy, moist, and very flavorful. The portion was also good for the price. Just be aware that the price for the skewers are for 1 meat skewers. Behind a glass window you could see them grilling the skewers and each one came out nicely. Overall it was a good meal and would go back for more.
I can say I'm being slightly harsh when giving Sumika 3 stars. But given the hype and the price, I guess we can all raise the bar a bit. From an authentic Japanese yakitori point of view, Sumika checks the box. All the skewers are prepare heartily and you can see it being grilled behind the glass in the kitchen. Also, the fact that there are not that many yakitori places in the Bay Area should help with Sumika make its mark. But this is exactly where it falls short, quite a bit. For a great yakitori, the three dimensions are simple. Quality of ingredients. Marination. And how it is grilled. The grilling was near perfection, although the fact that they bring it out altogether and not as they are grilled adds a bit to the "coldness". Tru yakitori joints bring it out one by one as they are done. The quality of ingredients I think is quite good but also not the top. The texture of some parts of the meat were just not as soft and tender, and the fact that it cooled waiting for delivery exacerbated the issue. However, what is absolutely not forgivable is the inconsistent marination. Some skewers were just downright bland. Try the chicken liver that has no taste but the bitterness of protein. Don't get me wrong. Some are good. But the inconsistencies are far too big for Sumika to score higher than 3 stars. The drinks are good. Good beer. Good sake. Decent service. I guess it is worth a try. But I'd hesitate to be back if it wasn't an occasion.
The appetizers were decent, with a generous portion of salad, though the taste was unremarkable. The chicken karaage pieces were too large, different from the usual. While the presentation of the geso karaage wasn’t great, it actually tasted good. The tempura was delicious, but the grilled chicken wings were too dry. The main issue was with the yakitori— it wasn’t hot, which really affected the overall dining experience. Overall, the price is on the high side. It’s worth trying once, but not if there’s a long wait.
Yakitori one order = one skewer only , what’s why bill come out so big ! But food quality is good , deep fried garlic is very interested ! ** updated 09152024 Felt food quality is going down * Sumika salad inside chicken was so dry , and salad dressing changed no flavor * SS crab is not worth $21 , The flour wrapped outside is thick and hard * Ordered chicken karaage , and asked for Mayonnaise, they charged me $1.00 * ordered Scallops $7, got two skinny pieces
I'm very disappointed at this restaurant and feels like I wasted my money. It was about 40 minutes wait for a tiny table. Another 15 minutes of waiting for someone to take our order. However, we grew impatient so we had to pull someone over to order. The options were all bad with mainly skewers, overpriced I may add. We ordered a few and let me tell you. The soup was literally just very salty soy sauce soup with some good clams. The skewered meats were extremely dry and overcooked especially the wagyu with apple onion sauce (that tasted horrible). We noticed that other tables started to time the staffs and getting more impatient. The moment they all got their bills, everyone paid and left quickly. We were sitting next to dirty tables for awhile until we finished. Hopefully, the owners hire more people and get better menus. I would never come back here.
ogiku group owns this and couple other establishments in the bay area. all their restaraunts have gone down hill so bad and many closed. what once was a respectable restaraunt establishment, the quality has gone down tremendously
If you would like to charge a mandatory service charge even for to go order, please, please, please, at least spend some money on your packaging. The plastic bag is the thinnest and will break if we hold it for two more minutes. Source dish is not heat resistant and melted. (Disclaimer: we didn’t microwave it, it was opened like this.)
