For the last 28 years, I've held one dining experience as the "this was my best ever restaurant experience." In those years, I've dined in many, many very wonderful places, but none could quite match my experience there. Last Saturday, that 28 year streak ended in exquisite fashion under the care of the many wonderful people at Kenzu in Napa, CA. I could wax eloquently about the menu, service, the fine attention to detail, the wine and sake pairing, the variety of flavor, the delicacy of it all, but I'll spare you all the details. I can only urge you to make an effort, should the means be available to you, to get yourself pampered there at least once. Hands down, the finest dining experience I've had the pleasure of enjoying.
Went to celebrate my bday. Love the well designed menu. Everything was tasty and some didn’t show from the picture but seaweed broth/soup that aged 1.5 years(one of the best I’ve ever had) or the texture of handmade tofu. Chef and servers are so patient and very welcoming. Will recommend to others.
I took my husband out to dinner at Kenzo Napa for his birthday. What a wonderful meal. My husband had the Kenzo Rindo red wine and I did the wine/sake pairing. The food was delicious and the service was exceptional. This was our 2nd Kenzo restaurant experience. We also had a great dinner at Kenzo Estate Gion in Kyoto, Japan, where we fell in love with the Kenzo Rindo wine. After the wine/sake pairing in Napa, we came home with 6 half bottles of red wine and my husband found a new favorite sake. I highly recommend any of the Kenzo restaurants (we plan to try the one in Tokyo next) for a celebration dinner that will not disappoint. And with all the wine and sake, it’s a good idea to book a room in Napa for the night.
After eating here, reading some of the reviews makes me upset. I really can’t imagine walking away from this meal and not thinking it was amazing. We eat a lot of delicious food, but this was truly next level—both when it comes to food and service. There were several bites that blew me away, some deliciously sweet scallop, a rich, oily mackerel with a dot of mustard, and the amazing rice bowl to close. The flavors were complex and simple at the same time, elegant and fresh. It was my birthday so we also sprung for the reserve wine and sake pairings. It was so worth it—some of the sakes we drank were $400/bottle, and they were unlike any sake I’ve had before, and paired perfectly with each dish. I can’t overstate how knowledgeable and kind our server was, and how small touches (like a free pour of sparkling wine) for my birthday made me feel special. Eating here is very calm, almost soothing. It’s quiet, and the food really is the focus. Highly recommend.
A perfect representation of what Japanese cuisine offers! I’ve had a lot of similar style food in the states but nothing like this. I am happy that I found a true gem hidden away in napa valley.
There’s a reason Kenzo is a Michelin one star. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by one of the staff members who took my photo outside. Once you walk inside, you feel like you’re transported to Japan. The servers are all dressed in suit and tie. Jazz music plays in the background. I had the pleasure of sitting at the sushi bar to watch the chefs create their dishes. It was awesome chatting with both of the chefs. One of them gave me restaurant recommendations for Tokyo. The other showed how wasabi is created. Not only are the chefs making the dishes but they pay attention to the guests. The attention to detail at this restaurant is phenomenal. All 9-courses of the Kaiseki menu were delicious. I especially enjoyed Adrian (my server), who explained the meaning behind each dish. It was an incredible two and half hour dining experience. I look forward to coming back.
Wonderful service and sake pairing to an exquisite menu. Every bite was packed with umami. Two of my favorite dishes out of the menu were Walnut tofu and Golden eye snapper owan. Every dish was carefully prepared with lovely presentation. We were super lucky to get last minute reservation as this place is always booked up way in advance. What a gem in Napa downtown area.
I now understand the Michelin star rating, after visiting Kenzo. We opted for the pre set alcohol menu that was pared perfectly with the food items. We loved it.
This is my first Michelin star restaurant. This restaurant is located in downtown Napa and there are plenty of parking spots around the restaurant. It requires reservations. Right when I entered I was shocked by the ambience. The decorations make you feel warm and the space is ample. We were seated at a table instead of in front of the bar because we had four people. However, you could still see the chefs making dishes. The dishes are designed well with the traditional kaiseki style. The server explained everything including the ingredients and the meaning of each dish right after serving. Since the restaurant has its own vineyard, they also provide tasting flights. I didn't try that because I had already been to several wineries that day. Nonetheless, I still ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc for the starter. The name of the wine is asatsuyu, which means morning dew. And as the name suggests, the wine is very fragrant and smells fruity, which makes you feel like you're on a mountain waiting for the sunrise. The taste is also very smooth just like the small drops of water on the leaves as they slide down. I would definitely recommend bringing one bottle home (or more). As for the dishes, most dishes were not warm dishes that day, which is not really my preference. However, we could still experience different umami brought by various ingredients from the mountains to the seas. Saying that, I wasn't really astonished by the dishes. The major reason is that the combination of ingredients is the most important part of presenting them. The presentation of the dishes that day did not make me feel like 1+1>2. Just 1+1=2. If not for the wine, I would just give this place a 4. I still enjoyed the dishes but I would expect more from a Michelin restaurant. Since their menu changes every season, maybe I'll give it a try next time and see if I will change my mind.
Amazing dining experience! The staff has such meticulous attention to detail and clearly is so highly trained in their chosen craft. Each dish had such unique and delicate balance of flavors and I love that they incorporate produce from the Napa estate. The wine was superb as well. I feel very lucky to have gotten to dine with them and would recommend it to any person appreciative of fine dining.
Fantastic dining experience. We were sat on the sushi chefs table and saw the 2 masters at work. Great service and presentation. Doing the wine pairing really made it that much more special.
Omakase experience in Napa! You can definitely tell that all the ingredients they use are fresh. Emailing them would be the best way to make reservations. Its an individualized experience, as you eat through the menu at your own pace. Minimalistic design at the restaurant. They welcome you with a warm towel for your hands; they have a basket for each table to place jackets/bags; and the chef signs your menu after the meal - makes for a great keepsake. We paid about $700 for 2 with their wine and sake pairing.
My wife and I had an incredible experience dining at Kenzo on our Honeymoon. Alexis was our server and he provided the highest class of service we’ve ever revieced at a restaurant. I can not recommend Kenzo enough to anyone who ventures to Napa! Absolutely worth the Michelin Star!
Probably the best dining experience of my life to date. The service was impeccable (did a great job of explaining the concept of Kaiseki) and the food so good as to defy description. My wife and I are already discussing our next visit. Incredible.
This place is the best food we had when we visited Napa. It has one Michelin star, but it honestly deserves 2 or 3! The culinary team is phenomenal; every course makes one pause to enjoy the beautiful flavors and rich umami. Service was impeccable, building was clean, sanitized, and gorgeously styled after traditional Japanese architecture. The wine and sake pairings were perfect for each course. Do NOT miss this restaurant when you visit.
Michelin awarded excellent modern Japanese Kaiseki restaurant. Served well selected fresh foods. Suggest you to order pairing by enjoying their own Napa brand wines.
Everything is really delicious and is better than all other Michelin-1star Japanese restaurants. Chef is super cute though :) Super recommend it if you go to Napa Valley. Besides, their wine is exceptional!
The best Japanese restaurant in Napa Valley. Brilliant service from friendly staff. Although not yet awarded a Michelin star, it's only a matter of time. This is Michelin star Japanese Kaiseiki. Fine dining and it's not cheap, $225/person for a set menu but you will definitely enjoy every bite as it is not only colourful, but also very delicious with combinations of different flavours in one bite. Very well thought mix of flavours and texture. A real treat !
I wasnt expecting much when I saw the bento in a plastic box. But it tasted AMAZING. Everything is so soft, comforting, and delicious. They just melt in my mouth. I had it for lunch, but I would recommend it for dinner as well. It feels you will have a really good night sleep after eating this. Also, it doesn’t look like much in the picture, but it’s a lot of food for lunch. I was just passing by the town, so I just had it in my car next to a park. But it felt like I was having a real Kaiseki meal, because it really tasted that good. The price may seem a little high, but after you eat it, it’s totally worth the money. I hope this restaurant can survive COVIS, I think this is one of the best Japanese food I’ve had this year.
The wine pairing is great if you don’t have time to go to the Kenzo estate. The food is amazing
The service couldn't have been better. You never wanted for anything. The meal was a non stop feast of tasty morsels. You get your own chef and he really takes care of you. Huge variety of dishes. Highly recommend this dining experience
Fabulous! If you are near Napa and like Japanese food then this is THE place. High quality. Great service. And is you have yet to see a 3 year old dried onto just ask - fascinating.
A wonderfully thought out and well paced experience from beginning to end. We were treated with complimentary champagne to start, and complimentary Kenzo dessert wine to finish. We then visited the Kenzo Estate two days later to get a deeper dive tasting experience of their wines (all quite spectacular). Highly recommend both the restaurant and wine estate.
Absolutely perfect. Kenzo is clearly one of the best Japanese restaurants in the country. The service, food and overall experience were exceptional. We went with a a group of 8 and had the Prix-Fixe menu. Every course was fantastic. Highly recommend Kenzo if you are anywhere nearby. Looking forward to going back soon.
About $300/person but worth it! Everything tastes fantastic (except the dessert lol)
Great food, great experience. The chef was really nice and keen to the details.
Kenzo delivers an authentic and refined Kaiseki experience. The Seasonal Hassun (appetizer platter) was a beautiful highlight, showing off a variety of textures from the snap peas with bacon to the snow crab with caviar. You can tell the Chef pours immense care into the fundamentals; the dashi broth in the Owan course was world-class. Attentive service and a warm atmosphere made for a perfect Valentine’s celebration.
Authentic Japanese kaiseki experience in Napa. Although quite expensive, it was genuinely Japanese in taste, ingredients selection and sensibility. Everything was excellent. The service and explanations are geared towards people with no experience, so for a person familiar with Japan, may feel like a tad too much.
Excellent experience, sat at the chefs bar with my wife. 9 course omakase style and they were able to alter the menu due to shellfish allergy without any trouble. The food & service we're excellent all around, we didn't do the wine pairing option but did enjoy some sake and Kenzo estate wine.
Spectacular service from the waitstaff and chef. All courses were excellent with the highlights being the tilefish, tuna, and beef. The dishes that featured the dashi broth were also very delicious. We enjoyed every minute!
Visited Kenzo a month ago with a few friends during our trip to Napa Valley, and it was truly a highlight of the entire journey. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the staff and, to our surprise, escorted to a private dining room - without even requesting it. This unexpected gesture immediately elevated the experience, adding a sense of exclusivity and care that stayed with us throughout the evening. The multi-course tasting menu was masterfully curated, and each dish was paired with wine selections that complemented the flavors with precision, like an elegant orchestral performance where each note had its place! Every course flowed seamlessly into the next, creating a balanced and immersive culinary experience that felt both refined and intimate. Unfortunately our schedule didn’t allow time to visit the Kenzo Estate, but after such an exceptional dining experience, we’re already planning our return trip with a vineyard visit at the top of our list!
A phenomenal experience paired with a highly attentive staff - I strongly recommend for anyone spending the evening in Napa. The chance to try Kenzo Estate wines, so rarely offered elsewhere, was enough to justify the price alone, but the inventive food deserves its own special mention. They were also very attentive to our group’s dietary restrictions - while I strongly recommend telling them in advance, they did a great job of adapting on the fly and creating dishes that were just as good as their restriction-free counterparts. I felt well taken care of from the moment I entered to the moment I left. I strongly recommend the daily alcohol pairing!
Went here for my wife’s birthday and did not disappoint. We did the sake pairing and glad we did. The staff did an amazing job of explaining every dish and pairing. Would go back in heartbeat.
Our evening at Kenzo was absolutely wonderful. The restaurant was wonderfully simple and pleasantly quiet. Every bite of every dish was thoughtful, flavorful, and delicious. The premium wine and sake pairing was completely worth it - so many fun and luscious selections. Without question, the best part of the meal was that we had the privilege of being served by Tomonori, who we later learned is the General Manager. He was a joy. He explained each course in perfect detail and answered every question we could think of. He made us excited to try each new dish - which of course greatly enhanced each individual taste and the overall experience. Highly recommended. Will definitely return!
Deserving of every Michelin star they get. Absolutely phenomenal experience!
My girlfriend took me to Kenzo to celebrate my birthday. Food was spectacular. Patrick took good care of us. We did not have the pairing because we had two wine tastings during the day. Overall, Kenzo was a great experience but I’m not sure I will repeat it. You should try it once, though.
This was an incredibly refined dinner with wine that surpassed the food as hard as that would be. The most elegant dishes presented in the cleanest way possible. Every dish was like a dive into the oceans rivers or farmland of Japan. From the grunt fish to the delicate river seaweed and then the waygu it was all done to perfection
Our party of seven were seated in the extra back room and we had our own chef who was both funny and professional. We all got the alcohol pairing which pairs a different drink each course and was very worth the cost. The alcohol served in the pairing was both sake and wines from the Kenzo winery. The food was top notch as obvious care was put into ingredient selection, preparation and plating. It was great to experience an authentic high end kaiseki experience in the US as doing the same in Japan could be difficult due to harsher expectations on etiquette and difficulty obtaining reservations.
If I could give 10 stars, I would! It was an experience from the moment we stepped inside until we left with a full heart and a full belly! We did the chef tasting with the wine and sake pairing and every course was more amazing, creative and scrumptious than the previous!! Highly recommend!!
Incredible experience from start to finish. The staff is highly knowledgeable, down to the last details of the decorations. The food is thoughtfully designed, beautiful, and delicious. The experience itself comes off as relaxed, well-paced, and light-hearted. We have been lucky enough to dine at several well-respected Japanese restaurants across the country and can safely say Kenzo deserves a spot in the conversation for the best. Future diners contemplating a visit should go ahead and make a reservation. You will not regret it.
Had a nice time and enjoyed the food very much. 4 stars on food because none of the food wowed me. They transitioned from sushi course to dessert with the dark miso which was not quite right for me.
Absolutely exquisite! We have been to so many Michelin Star restaurants and this one holds a candle. Every dish is intentional and delicious!
The presentation of the food, the environment of the restaurant and quality of service is top notch!! I also really enjoyed the wine here. The only lacking aspect is the food itself. Although every dish is solid, nothing particularly stood out to me. For a Michelin one star place with >$250 tasting menu, I expect the food to wow me more.
When you step into Kenzo, you are transported to a standard, intimate restaurant setting in Japan. Kenzo offers a superb fine dining Japanese kaiseki experience where presentation and service truly shines. As for quality flavors in comparison to Kaiseki restaurants offered in Japan, there are some dishes that are rich in flavors, but others that can be improved slightly. Definitely give Kenzo a try for anniversary, birthday, or just a special treat for a one star Michelin rated meal. They also customize their menus for special occasions.
Kenzo Napa is the brainchild of Kenzo Tsujimoto, the founder of Capcom of Street Fighter fame. He wanted to bring the love of Napa Valley wines to his home country so started the award winning Kenzo Estates vineyard. Missing authentic Japanese Kaiseki cuisine while in Napa, he then opened Kenzo Napa helmed by the 3 Michelin star chef of the restaurant Kanda in Tokyo. Kenzo, located in Napa, is a serene oasis to Japanese cuisine and our excellent meal was greatly enhanced by the food and wine descriptions of Patrick 📷 Kaiseki Menu $275 / Grilled Shizuoka Fresh Water Eel / Seasonal Hassun ~ blue shrimp, kanagawa octopus, Hokkaido scallop with sweet corn, yukon gold potato caviar, tomato gelée / Yamaguchi Tilefish Owan / Seared Chiba Cutlassfish Sashimi / Chiba Seabass and Green Asparagus Okakiage / Chilled Somen Noodle with Nagasaki Abalone / Slow Roasted A5 Satsuma Wagyu Tenderloin / Chef‘s Sushi / Chef’s Dessert 📍Kenzo (Napa, CA) Reservations are required on Opentable and dining is all inside with both counter and table seating available. All credit cards including AmEx are accepted.
I have visited Japan five times: 2010, 2014, 2023 (twice) 2024. I have dined at modest noodle shops as well as Michelin starred restaurants. Our Kaiseki dinner for two with wine pairings was just over $1,000. For that price, I expect to be amazed. If you are not familiar with a Japanese tasting menu, you might be impressed. But the quality does not meet the high price.
So I was so disappointed, we're big Kenzo fans we love the wine, we bought bento boxes during the pandemic. And we've enjoyed the restaurant multiple times, but this time the food was good but it was not at the high level I expect. There was literally no Nigri or traditional sashimi, lots of wagu, maybe too much. The service was great and the wine and sake were tip top. We got a lot of tofu Petit fours and cooked bites not what I have come to expect.
Definitely paying premium for the Napa name value + the Michelin star + Bay Area omakase craze. We paid 700 total with one wine pairing and encore nigiri at the end, and we ended up having to have In N Out on the way home because the small portion.
Utterly pretentious. If you want to eat a very long formal repressed dinner in a cold but beautifully designed atmosphere with well trained staff that are a bit constipated, but look important and high class - then this is the place for you. If you want to listen to an hour poetic monologue for every single dish then this is the theater for you. If you are hungry do not eat here. But if you want to seem important and pretend to eat ethereal food then this is your place. If you appreciate genuine real flavorful food without flowery showering hoopla look elsewhere
Was excited to go here with my partner. We are locals to Napa and have had it on our radar for a while. Pulled the trigger for our anniversary. Ordered the wine pairing along with the menu. This is not fine dining. There was zero synchrony on the presentation. The first course, a tempura cauliflower was horrible. I have had better cauliflower out of my air fryer. Its almost as if they fried the cauliflower in cold oil. Mushy and disastrous. The remaining 7-8 courses were just okay. Nothing that justified $300. Along with the $200 wine pairing and $70 for a single glass of Cabernet. On the website it says gratuity included... not additional.. it is in fact additional.
