Amazing place to experience traditional Korean food. The food is incredible, and the setting is gorgeous. The dumpling soup, bulgogi rice bowl, spicy rice cakes, and dandelion green salad were favorites! The presentation is beautiful and the service is superb. Also the herbal tea was the perfect way to warm up settle in for the meal.

I am not a fan of vegan food but this one stands out. I liked Hangawi for its elegant presentation, calming atmosphere, and creative vegetarian Korean cuisine. The culinary experience was in short exquisite.

Warm service with good recommendations, charming atmosphere and delicious vegan food. We really loved the tofu patties, zen bibimbap and tofu in creamy sauce - those are all delightful options I would completely recommend. The spicy baby dumplings were not too exciting. Overall, definitely with a visit!

Really cool experience and really good food! Cozy, warm environment, very comfortable. We ordered: 1) The combination rolls (noodle rolls, seaweed rolls, mushroom rolls, and kimchi rolls) 2) The spicy baby dumplings (not spicy) 3) The dandelion and avocado salad (one of my favorite things — the ginger mustard dressing was amazing) 4) The ‘bulgogi’ bibimbap 5) The spicy tofu kimchi hot pot (really good) 6) The spicy rice cakes (another one of my favorites) 7) Korean plum sparkling soda (mildly sweet) 8) The lychee sparkling soda (really sweet) 9) The red beans ice cream rhapsody (not very good)

The food was absolutely excellent — I honestly wish I could give it more than 5 stars! I loved the taste; every bite was amazing. The atmosphere was really good and made the experience even better. The service was fast for the appetizers, though the main course did take a little time, but it was worth the wait. I would highly recommend trying the Combination Roll and the Kimchi Clay Bowl — both were outstanding. Definitely a place I’d recommend! It is an amazing vegan place

Hangawi offers a serene, temple like dining experience that complements its food beautifully. The spicy perilla tofu bites were outstanding, packed with flavor from minced oyster mushrooms and tofu, while the black truffle dumplings were earthy and pleasant though not the most memorable. The spicy kimchi stone bowl bibimbap was a clear standout with bold kimchi and crunchy vegetables, and the combination kimbap with garden veggies, bulgogi, kimchi, and crispy mushroom stuffing was deeply satisfying, with the kimbap and bibimbap being my favorites overall. The date paste tea was also very good, with small chunks of dates that added natural sweetness and texture. Service was warm and attentive throughout, with thoughtful greetings and care, and the shoes off seating added to the calm, meditative atmosphere. Overall, I was genuinely a fan, it felt intentional, comforting, and well executed.

Really cute date night vibe, and prompt service. We got the rice bowl with truffle and mushroom and it was delicious. The fruit tea was also a new favorite. Got the Mongolian stew and loved how spicy and flavorful it was. Not a fan of the spicy baby dumplings - thought the skin was thicker than usual dumplings and the filling a little bland.

This restaurant is an absolute gem and one of its kind. Having a vegan Korean restaurant in the city is truly a blessing and the food, experience, and staff here are all truly exceptional. We tried the emperors mini lunch menu that includes a soup, appetizer, entree, and dessert and it was so worth it! It was a great way to try a little bit of everything and the portions were very substantial. All of the food tasted so fresh, flavorful, and packed with vegetables. I loved the pumpkin porridge, sweet corn soup, and rice cakes. Both the stuffed mushrooms and combination rolls were delicious and so unique. Soy chocolate ice cream for dessert was light and tasty. Lastly, it’s so wonderful sitting without shoes in the cozy environment and heated floors. Would absolutely come here and again and it’s now one of my favorite spots!

One of my favorite restaurants in all of New York — the tranquil environment and tastiest vegan, Korean food. Such a relaxing dining experience on the tatami mats, an oasis from the hustle outside! I honestly love any of their stone bowl rice options but the korean pancake platter and kale dumplings in tofu skin wrap steal the show! Every ingredient feels so mindful in creating the most comforting flavors. Our host even brought over a complimentary vegan tiramisu, which was the perfect end to the night. Highly, highly recommend booking a reservation here!

Hangawi is an absolute gem in Midtown. The ambiance alone is worth the visit—it’s incredibly cozy and peaceful, requiring you to remove your shoes before entering, which immediately sets a relaxing tone. The menu is full of unique and creative dishes that you won't find anywhere else. Everything we ordered was delicious. However, the highlight of our night was the service. We follow a strict oil-free (Whole Food Plant-Based) diet, and the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us. Our server was incredibly patient and knowledgeable, making sure our modifications were handled perfectly while keeping the food flavorful. It’s rare to find an upscale restaurant that handles dietary restrictions with such grace and care. If you want a special, healthy, and delicious meal in a beautiful setting, this is the place to go. Highly recommended

What a restaurant! Relax, eat extraordinary food whether you are vegan or not. I didn’t want to leave. You have to make a reservation. And be ready to take off your shoes.

Hangwai is an absolute standout—one of those restaurants where every detail feels intentional, from the warm atmosphere to the beautifully plated dishes. The menu is creative without being pretentious, and the flavors are exceptionally well balanced. We especially recommend the mushroom truffle dish, which was the star of the night. The truffle aroma hits you before the first bite, and the combination of earthy mushrooms and rich, silky truffle is unbelievably good. It’s the kind of dish you instantly want to order again, even before you’re finished with it. Service was friendly and attentive, and the pacing of the meal was perfect. Hangwai strikes that rare balance of being refined yet comfortable—an excellent choice for a special night out or a memorable meal with friends.

Opted for the Fall Prix Fixe - so good! Everything was excellent and comforting, I loved the tomato soup, the spicy noodle soup, the fritters, the stone rice bowl, and the dessert. Excellent service and super healing and calm experience

We honestly visit NYC from Philly just to have dinner here. The dishes and sake list are out of this world and always leave us wanting to come back instead of trying somewhere new. The restaurant is beautiful with the best staff. This was our first time having a cocktail and it was perfectly made. Not a single dish we wouldn't order again. Highly recommend splitting so you can try more!

Ambiance (5/5): This was such an immersive dining experience! As soon as you walk in, you are asked to take off your shoes, where you walk up an elevated level to then descend into the floor where the tables are. There are some tables that are normal as well but I think has to be selected when you make your reservation and/or request them. The staff are in traditional outfits, the dividers between the tables are decorated, the furniture/walls/pictures are ornate. The restaurant is fairly dark and noise level was okay to louder since we’re nested so close. Service (5/5): Our server gave us good recommendations and was very attentive to our needs. It may be harder to flag someone down but there are plenty of servers/busboys helping throughout that we did not have any issues. Cauliflower bites (5/5): There is a nice breading that soaks up the spicy sauce. It was my favorite of the 3 apps that we ordered. Baby dumpling (5/5): These cannot be fried. I still enjoyed them! Bossam bites (3/5): The skin of the bites were not to my liking. The whole dish is something I would have skipped. Before the entrees, they provided some free kimchi dishes (spicy and non-spicy)! Mongolian Hot Pot (5/5): I felt like there was so much flavor and tons of ingredients that were in the dish. I had enough to take home to-go. My friend’s tofu dish was also very flavorful (and I slightly preferred hers over mine!) I can concur that this place is worthy of a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Amazing that the whole menu is vegan-friendly!

Amazing food, great service and ambience! Don't usually find good korean food options for vegetarians in US, but every dish we ordered here was so tasty with perfect balance of flavors! They also have pics for every item in the online menu, making it easier to select. Service was quick, staff was friendly and helpful, clarifying doubts in the dishes, continuously refilling water, clearing empty dishes without even being asked. Would love to visit again in my next trip to NYC!

Amazing food and a large menu! The service was polite, courteous, and the servers explained every dish in the prix-fixe that we ordered. The lychee ice tea was amazing, and every dish in the set menu was great! I loved the dessert of vegan ice cream and cakes, and the dumplings are a must have! The creamy tofu vegan cold soup was delicious too.

Incredible dining experience! Staff, service and food are solid all around. This is a vegetarian restaurant. Make reservations in advance if possible because it was packed on a Monday night. If you’re hungry, make sure to order more. Our table of 3 ordered a salad, fried dumplings and ice cream to share, and I ordered the stone tofu bibimbap bowl for myself.

My Tastebuds Were Tricked (in the Best Way Possible)! Prepare yourselves, fellow food adventurers, for a tale of delicious deception! I recently stumbled into a restaurant, blissfully unaware that I was about to embark on a culinary journey that would leave me both mystified and magnificently full. The food? Let's just say it was so good, I didn't realize it was vegan until someone whispered it to me, probably out of pity for my naive delight. My brain is still trying to process how something so utterly scrumptious could be made without, you know, all the usual suspects. Rest assured, you will waddle out of there feeling like you've won the lottery of flavor, with a belly full of joy. Service So Good, I Almost Asked for a Pillow The service at this establishment isn't just "amazing," it's practically a spiritual experience. The staff moved with such grace and efficiency, they could probably teach a masterclass in chill. They somehow managed to create an atmosphere so relaxing, I half-expected to see people meditating between courses. And speaking of unique experiences, I had my first-ever "floor" seating experience, which, surprisingly, added to the whole zen vibe. It was like a very comfortable, very delicious picnic indoors. Plus, their Sunday mini prix fixe menu is an absolute genius move – all the deliciousness without the commitment issues. My Eyes and Stomach Are Still Best Friends The decor here is less "restaurant" and more "serenity now." Every detail contributes to a genuinely relaxing atmosphere that complements the food perfectly. It's the kind of place where you can truly unwind, forget your troubles, and just focus on the important things in life, like how you're going to fit more of that delicious food into your already happy stomach. My eyes loved the aesthetic, and my stomach loved everything else.

I recently visited Hangawi and had such a unique and memorable experience. We chose the traditional floor seating option, which instantly made the evening feel special and immersive. It was a fun way to enjoy the meal and really added to the authenticity of the experience. From the moment we walked in, the service stood out. The attendants kindly took our shoes and jackets, which felt incredibly thoughtful and welcoming. The servers were attentive and patient, taking the time to explain the menu in detail and answering all of our questions with care. The cauliflower bites were absolutely amazing and easily my favorite dish of the night. They were packed with flavor and had the perfect texture. The dumpling soup was also comforting and delicious, making it another highlight of the meal. The pancakes, however, were not as appealing to me. I usually enjoy seafood pancakes, and since this is a fully vegan restaurant, I understand the limitation. That said, I felt the flavors could have been a bit more innovative or bold, as they came across slightly bland compared to the other dishes. The plant based Korean bulgogi stone bowl rice was excellent. It came with kimchi, spicy sauce, and a milder sauce, and everything together was flavorful and satisfying. Each bite felt well balanced and thoughtfully prepared. Overall, Hangawi is a lovely place to visit at least once or twice, especially if you want to experience traditional Korean floor seating in a calm and beautifully maintained setting. It is more than just a meal, it is an experience.

I love that you take your shoes off and you have a very authentic experience. I liked the food a lot but nothing really wowed me. I loved the dumplings the most. I had the tofu bibbimbap which was great I got a mango drink called the meditation- I would definitely skip this one. The other drinks my friends ordered were way better. The cucumber one was solid

This is a traditional and authentic fully vegan plant based and JAIN option available (no onions,no garlic,no scallions)restaurant in New York. featuring a unique ambiance that includes the tradition of removing your shoes before dining along with traditional seating options on the floor, ample legroom beneath the table, so you don’t have to fold your legs all the time. I would rate it a solid 9/10. The only reason I’m not giving it a full 10 is that the prices can be a bit high compared to the portion sizes. However, the taste is absolutely amazing, making it worth a visit. As a vegetarian, I was thrilled to find a fully plant-based vegan restaurant—a rarity! I felt completely at ease knowing I could try anything on the menu. They accommodated our dietary preferences by making everything without mushrooms. We ordered the cauliflower bites and organic zen noodles, both of which were delicious. I highly recommend the kale dumplings wrapped in tofu skin, the wheat-free kale pancakes, the spicy grilled tofu, the spicy tofu kimchi hotpot, and the spicy kimchi stone bowl rice (bibimbap). Gluten-free options are also available! We also tried their beverages, including the iced matcha latte and hot and cold shisandra, and I recommend the iced shisandra—it tasted fantastic. They also provide disposable slippers for the washrooms. Overall, Hangawi is a fantastic restaurant, and I highly recommend everyone try it for an authentic experience of Korean cuisine in a @plant-based format.
