So delicious!! My favorite is their katsu and the noodles. Katsu is perfectly cooked, juicy and tender. Noodle has perfect texture and it tastes great with the slightly sweet and creamy sauce. Even the complimentary appetizers and drinks were amazing!
Ebi katsu was very crispy and flaky. Very generous size. Sabazushi has some grated ginger in each piece that really enhances the taste of the mackerel. Eggplant agebitashi has both eggplant and pork, which pairs well with the sauce, which had a hint of sweetness. konban corn rib has a strong salty flavor that is addicting.
Really amazing start with the yuzu fizz and tamatos. Must get the butter scallops, amazing sauce and veges. Make sure to order a truffle rice as well and get the sauce over it. Tenderloin and pork loin really good, mazemen, really nice meat sauce.
Tldr: top notch modern Japanese dining experience. Def will be returning for more. Highly recommended. Detailed review: every one of their dishes was exceptional. Def get the corn rib to start. Also strongly recommended is shishito peppers to go along with their fried shrimp (Ebi Katsu) and fried pork dishes (tonkatsu). Ebi katsu is amongst the best I had around the world, including a few cities in Japan. Also recommended is Mazemen (cold udon dish with spicy pork sauce) if you like spicy food. Great way to end the meal, only to be followed with corn ice cream to round everything up for the day.
Had a lunch on Saturday. The dining area is cozy and there is a small natural lit space in the middle, which makes the restaurant airy. We had pork loin katsu w/brunch add-on, sabazushi, Konban corn rib, shishito pepper, mazemen, and Konban corn ice cream. The shishito pepper is very well made. The corn ice cream was hard to cut even after resting for 1 minute. We should have been more patient.
The overall dining environment, service, and food quality all exceeded my expectations. This is a restaurant with excellent value for money ⭐️ Upon seating, we were given a complimentary tomato with cream cheese 🍅🧀, which was refreshing and appetizing—an excellent start to the meal. The corn ribs 🌽 are a must-order: crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, with the corn’s natural sweetness and juiciness perfectly preserved. They’re paired with a palate-cleansing drink, making the dish feel very well balanced. My favorite dish was the sabazushi (mackerel sushi) 🍣. The portion of fish is generous, with a great balance of fat and lean meat. The richness unfolds beautifully in the mouth, while the wasabi and sauce in the middle keep it fresh and not greasy. The sushi rice is lightly seasoned with vinegar, adding nice depth and layers of flavor. The pork tenderloin katsu 🍖 was fried to perfection—soft, juicy, and not dry at all. Surprisingly, it tastes even better with wasabi. The mazemen 🍜 has a bold, intense flavor that’s very addictive, somewhat reminiscent of Chinese sweet wheat noodles. The meat sauce is generous, and anyone who enjoys strong flavors will love this dish. For dessert, the Konban corn ice cream 🌽🍨 is shaped like a whole corn cob, with a white chocolate shell. You can even taste elements resembling corn husk inside. Both the creativity and flavor are impressive. Overall, this is a highly well-executed restaurant that’s absolutely worth revisiting 🔁✨
This place has been on my must try list for so long because it’s not that easy to get a res especially for larger groups. Overall it’s a good spot. We all agreed that the best dish was the mazemen - the noodles are super bouncy and the sauce is so flavorful. The katsus are definitely some of the better katsus I’ve had in NYC. Very clean and simple like they do it in Japan but idt they compare to the ones I’ve had in Japan still. The desserts are very unique, great to try. The cocktails are also pretty good and the vibe/ aesthetic are great. Overall I would definitely recommend this place.
Went to dinner with some friends and everything was excellent. Lots of variety to choose from, both food and alcohol. The plates are pretty small so sharing is the best way to go. My favorites were the scallops, pork katsu, eggplant and sabazushi. There were five of us and we ordered at least 10 dishes. We were stuffed. Service was on point.
GET THE CORN RIB! The corn rib was the best thing we had from this place! The ratio of sweetness, saltiness, and spices along with the corn flavor was really good! I highly suggest to get it! We also got the pork loin katsu. It was neat like how a katsu should be. Crispy and neat. The uni shari, was good. One suggestion for the restaurant regarding this menu is that the seaweed pieces can be smaller in size and more in quantity. I personally felt that I needed to stuff the seaweed with rice to match the pieces. I ended up running out of seaweed but still was good. The ice cream was good as well, it tastes very similar to korean corn flavored ice cream they sell at the convenient stores. Unfortunately the sushi and sashimi sets were all sold out when we went for a 12pm reservation. To be fair, it was black Friday and the place was full. My friend was the one that reserved it and told me walk-in wasnt available the last time she attempted to go. Atmosphere was warm, very hospitable. Sensed that the staff were well-trained. Hospitable and warm to the customers. Overall: I would rate this restaurant 8/10. Food was neat. I would go again. Corn ribs are a must from the menu! Reserve before going!
My friend and I came for lunch on a Saturday noon. We were greeted and seated right away. The staff were super friendly and gave us recommendations on the menu. The mackerel sushi, sushi set, and corn were absolutely amazing! The tenderloin katsu was tasty but a little undercooked for my preference. The scallops were good, and the mazemen was okay. Oh and we absolutely loved the interior, it brought us back to Japan immediately. Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely come back!
A Katsu That Will Change You- Konban NYC Konban NYC delivers a beautiful balance of comfort and creativity, where every dish feels both familiar and elevated. The intimate setting pairs perfectly with their modern take on Japanese-inspired small plates. To start the konban corn ribs were a fun and indulgent surprise—sweet, crunchy, and dusted with a cheesy umami powder that made it impossible to stop eating. The cucumber katsuobushi offered a nice contrast—cool, refreshing, and subtly savory thanks to the bonito flakes and kombu powder. The shishito peppers were blistered to perfection and seasoned with an umami powder that elevated the simple vegetable into something deeply satisfying. Lastly the karaage, a standout and table favorite —lightly battered and perfectly crisp, served with a rich black pepper mayo that gave each bite a peppery, creamy kick. The tenderloin katsu was equally impressive—juicy, tender pork wrapped in a delicate, golden crust, paired with a trio of condiments: tonkatsu sauce, a dab of wasabi, and a touch of truffle salt. Each combination brought out something different, but all were excellent. To finish, the mazemen stole the show. The spicy pork sauce, rich almond butter, and thick noodles created a luxurious, nutty, and spicy balance—comforting yet bold, with the pat of butter melting into a luscious coating. Overall, Konban NYC feels like a place that takes its flavors seriously while keeping things relaxed and fun. Ideal for sharing plates, sipping sake, and lingering a little longer than planned. Here are too more nights with friends and food at Konban 🥰
We got seated at 5:30 pm with a last-minute reservation. It was three of us, and we ended up ordering a lot tonight! Sadly, we didn’t get a chance to take photos of everything we ordered because the food looked too good to wait. Grace was our server and she was amazing — super friendly, gave great recommendations, and took such good care of us. Definitely coming back!
Absolutely loved this place. It’s a bit hidden like a typical speakeasy but once you get there, you’re transported to Japan! My husband and I had a wonderful experience. Our waiter was impeccable, the food was downright delicious, and the ambiance was great! Highly recommend the corn ribs, scallops and truffle rice! Tip: pour the sauce from the scallops on top of the rice for an umami explosion
Konban is one of the best dining discoveries in New York! The sashimi was incredibly fresh—salmon, tuna, scallop, and uni were all top quality and full of flavor. The grilled mackerel paired with the rice dish was outstanding, a combination I couldn’t stop eating. The corn appetizer was so delicious that I completely forgot to take a photo because I was too busy enjoying it. I also went with my kid, and the katsu was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy inside—we both loved it. The atmosphere was another highlight. With a central courtyard, it had a zen-like calmness while still feeling bright and warm. The plating and service were refined and elegant, on par with fine dining, yet still approachable. The staff were attentive and natural in their service, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend if you want Japanese cuisine that feels both special and comfortable.
So many friends recommended this place, especially for the grilled corn and the pork cutlet. I finally managed to get a reservation today, and both dishes completely exceeded my expectations! The grilled corn with cheese was incredibly addictive — the flavor and texture were just perfect. The pork cutlet had a light, crisp coating that was wonderfully delicate and not greasy at all. We also tried the eggplant, noodles, and mushroom dishes, and every single one was delicious. Truly unforgettable — I left wanting more!
This restaurant is highly recommended if you’re into unique Japanese dishes! All the dishes we had were amazing - starting with the fish with oranges which was absolutely stunning and refreshing, such a great way to kick off the meal. The main dishes like the aubergine and sushi rolls were fantastic too. But honestly, the corn dish was absolutely delicious! It’s such a smart way to present the dish - they made it look so artistic and creative. And get this - they even turned it into ice cream that looked like a corn roll! You can still taste the corn but it’s ice cream. Highly recommend this place and definitely suggest making a reservation ahead of time
Overall a good experience but I did leave here hungry! The interior is Japanese inspired which gave it a nice vibe. The food was all delicious, I would highly recommend the katsu. The sashimi, was ok but I would not order it again. For the price the portions were small as you can see in my photos.
Food quality is great from appetizers to main course. The Katsu is top notch. The doneness of the pork, breading and seasoning are on point. The dessert could be better, while the corn ice-cream is tasty, they should really serve customer when the temperature is right. The ice-cream was too cold and had to wait a bit for it to soften.
Very cute restaurant. When you come in you see the chefs at work. There's a long front room with a long booth and small tables. It's a little tight. Here you see a Zen Garden. There's also a back room that appears to be more spacious than the front. The Mazemen Noodles were amazing. The Corn Ice Cream was extremely frozen, making it hard to cut into. It was an okay ice cream but definitely overhyped. My friend had the Wedding Peach dessert and she wasn't a fan. Desserts apparently are not their strong suit. She had the Noodles with Spinach, which she enjoyed. The prices are reasonable. The service is quick and efficient. I don't know if I'll go back but I'm glad I finally tried it.
I've had this place bookmarked for a while and finally decided to try it for my birthday. Reservations are recommended, it looks like it gets busy. Service was great and the food was delicious, highly recommend the corn ribs and corn ice cream (way better than you'd think)! The pork tenderloin katsu was also delicious. Only complaint is that for the price, the plates are too small and not filling. I know this is izakaya-style and small plates are part of the vibe, but there's no rice or anything that comes as a side to help fill you up. I was especially surprised that the katsu only comes with the typical rice / soup / cabbage set at lunchtime. Overall delicious food, but too expensive for what you get.
By friends' recommendstion, I came here with my sister to celebrate her birthday with high expectations. The space design of the restaurant is nice, especially for someone who likes big windows. It turnsn out, however, the waitress we had was not very friendly and never smile - wish we had a different waiter/waitress. We enjoyed the Katsu Loin and the fish with mushrooms, but not the eggplant dish as it's flavor was on the salty side. We also love the Korn ice cream, although it's pricey. I also wish that the restaurant would offer undertable storage bins for our use.
