I’ve been here a few times, and I’ve never been disappointed. Have gotten their breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burrito, the panini, as well as salads. The breakfast sandwiches are fabulous, they’re definitely generous with the portions and you’re not left feeling like your egg-meat-bread ratio is uneven. The service has always been quick and efficient even when they’re busy.
I like the Cozy feel of this place and come here a lot. I also like the little back area seating off the parking lot. Some of the food is very good, but other dishes are disappointing. I like the pizza, spaghetti, soup, and BLTA. Avoid the grilled cheese sandwich, which is not cooked enough, and the croissant, which is a real disappointment. There is one guy behind the counter who is never friendly, but some of the other waitstaff is nice.
Good casual Italian eatery, come here for eating not for presentation, pasta was fresh, and alfredo had mushrooms and spinach, I recommend for lunch on a workday break!
Good food. Got a veggie pizza with artichokes and black olives. Crust was good. Fries here were excellent. Outdoor seating at the back was nice and relaxed. The coffees others ordered looked great.
This is a lovely little spot. Small but cozy. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There was live music when we went which was a very lovely background to our meal. The family dinner is a great value and the perfect amount for two. I'll definitely be bringing my friends here next time I'm craving delicious, reasonably priced Italian.
Mmmm, very tasty! I had the hash, which was hearty and delicious (had to take some home to save for lunch). My husband had the bacon and egg sandwich which he very much enjoyed. Coffee was excellent, and staff were very friendly. Definitely would go back next time I'm in the area.
In the tradition of Cafe Trieste, the coffee is excellent, the pastries are the best. The Italian food, pasta and pizzas are delicious. My Dad loved the spaghetti and meatballs. They have great family meal deals. Prices are reasonable and the staff are super and are always courteous. And did I say, it's a great place to read a real book!
chiave’s oat milk latte is the only coffee that gets me up these days, one of my regular coffee shops. also a chill environment to get work done, they just don’t have wifi
Been going for years. Low prices, nice staff, and good atmosphere. Free wifi and power at some places. Has a very different ambiance than the modern coffee shop (minimalist/wide spaces/bright lighting) that makes it unique.
Another ‘home away from home’. It can be difficult to find good service, inviting atmosphere and great coffee all in the same space, but Chiave hits all the bases for me. I also need to have a café that’s open in the evening to really help balance my work/life. I drink coffee all day. Thank You!
Love this place, authentic food from folks who take pride in their Cafe. I love the capicola sandwich and their coffee. My wife and I enjoy eating lunch on the patio behind the shop where striking a conversation with other diners is often a treat.
Cozy warm spot with great nearby paid parking and delicious food. I ordered The "chef's special" and was NOT disappointed. Although it was pretty busy, I had my food within 10 minutes. Luis, the chef, if you read this, you are very good. Thank you.
Their coffee is delicious! You don't have to order ridiculous drinks like a caramel macchiato to make their coffee palatable. A traditional cappuccino requires no additives. No sugar, no chocolate, and certainly no caramel. Their pastries are amazing as are their savory dishes. Even when they are busy, the friendly and efficient staff will not make you wait long for your caffeine.
This is a great place to meet up with friends.
A family favorite café. We love the classic old café feel with old wooden tables and chairs. Always feels vibrant. Local art for sale decorates the walls. Food is always delicious. Lots of pastries to choose from. We also love their family dinner specials: One pizza or pasta dish, two soups, two salads. Nice outdoor seating, too!
Great cafe to spend an afternoon! Love how many food options there is and the desserts were tasty! The cafe offers outdoor seating which is perfect on a sunny day. Although I do have to warn you the pigeons there will steal you food and a few of them are pretty aggressive... they keep coming back and I couldn’t chase them away😂 Keep a close eye on your delicious meal 👀
Stopped in here while waiting for my girlfriend who had an appointment at the nearby Kaiser. I walked past a lot of places to get here and I am glad I did. The inside felt cozy and comfortable, the kind of place you want to get a coffee & a pastry, sit down with a book and waste a few hours. It is going to take time to prepare your drink, longer than the big chains but you can't rush a good coffee you know. They had a nice selection of pastries that all looked good but I was here for lunch. I grabbed a menu which had a lot of options available. Pasta, pizza, breakfast foods, sandwiches and panini's. I ordered a double latte and the turkey and bacon panini. After getting my latte I headed out to the back patio to await my food. I didn't need to wait long for the food to come out. It had a nice little salad on the side that I wasn't expecting, some pickles and some peppers. The panini was excellent, the bread nice and crunchy and just enough of the aioli so that it wasn't overpowering. The very simple salad made an excellent side for this panini. Just some leafy greens and dressing. The latte was was great, really hit the spot. Overall a very satisfying experience. If I lived in Oakland I might consider making this a regular stop but alas I do not live here.
I love the food here! One of the best breakfast place I have had recently in California
I was sick so I ordered lentil soup and a freshly squeezed orange juice. After I ordered, the meal came in about one minute, maybe less. The juice, the lentils, and the bread were all delicious. Money well spent, no complaints at all.
Quiet and quaint. Friendly staff. Good food and great coffee, made well.

Quiet and quaint. Friendly staff. Good food and great coffee, made well.
Cafe Chiave is consistently exceptional. The coffee is always outstanding, the food is truly top-tier, and the staff are genuinely cheerful and welcoming every single time. You immediately feel comfortable the moment you walk in. The music, the atmosphere, and the overall aesthetic create a beautiful, relaxed vibe that makes you want to stay longer and keep coming back. This place gets everything right — quality, service, and ambiance. Easily one of the best cafés around!
Great food. Yummy sandwiches and soups. Great coffee. Quiet. Hangout spot for mature folks and professionals.
Hidden gem! Great coffee, food and atmosphere. Just be careful, if you walk by too fast you might miss it! Outdoor seating and ample parking in rear
The turkey bacon panini is soooo good 💜the bread is so fresh. They also good meatball sub- garlicly-mmmm. There is a very nice selection of fresh pastries too.
Really good ice tea and muffins. The muffins are like 4 dollars, and are very big.
The sandwiches are SO GOOD. The bread is always super fresh and delicious, I love their recipes, and they have great sauces. The staff is lovely and I enjoy dining in, especially at their outdoor seating. Whenever I order for pickup, the food is ready very quickly. They also have great desserts!

Great fresh ingredients. Amazing pizza and pasta.
The one coffee shop that had outlets! I went to two other beforehand. It’s pretty small and lively. Not modern got more of a different style. I only had orange juice though but I saw Simone order lasagna and it looked good.
Very disappointed I ordered a Italian Sub which was on the expensive side & when we got home there was no prosciutto and the other meats that was supposed to be on it. Maybe the cheff should concentrate more on the order instead of talking and wear gloves when preparing especially sandwiches. As usual the cashier who took the order as always was pleasant and professional. Management should emphasize on cleanliness and have more training on how to handle food.
Nice ladies. Good food and drink. But old sits. Need may be modernized, that's personal. I recommend like to do more internal decorations, but if people love it this way it is Okey.
This is a nice place easy place. The problem is that on Sunday night there are so many people on their laptops taking up all the tables and none seemed to eating or drinking anything. The deserts are great and have great dinner specials for families. Also on weekends they have nice a mix off music.
I came to get some work done and relax. It was a bit crowded but I did find a place to sit. The pear salad was not what I expected. I probably should have ordered one of their scrumptious looking desserts instead! It was a bit unkept inside but for the most part employees were friendly and helpful. I'd come back for the desserts.
Coffee Chiave has become my go-to for a simple solo breakfast or brunch. The casual atmosphere makes it easy to settle into a small table by yourself and catch up on reading or knock out a few personal tasks without feeling rushed or out of place. I always opt for the breakfast special—they offer one each day, at least whenever I’ve been—and it hasn’t disappointed yet. Today’s was a chorizo scramble with perfectly crispy home fries, fresh pico de gallo, and crumbled feta. Hearty without being heavy. A nice touch: their coffee for here comes in small, medium, or large mug options (medium shown). And if you can snag the spot by the window, do it—nothing like a little vitamin D with your morning meal.
Location is casual local cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. Great for study and casual meet up. Service is more of self service with cleaning up after yourself despite the tip culture. Food is great with variety of pastries and sweets. Drinks are larger than other coffee shops. There are some seasonal specialties like cast iron frittata, delicious and worth to come back.
Bagel was soft, salmon tasted fresh, slightly more cream cheese than I preferred but I just wiped it off. Overall tasty! Also got a caramel latte and it is delish!

Sorry I came in today. The food is better and counter service is even slower. 8 min wait for a 4 dollar plain coffee. They don't keep the line moving, every client had to be fully served before they spoke to the next one. A woman waited even longer than me just to ask for a to-go box. Unfortunately Gaylords and Starbucks both closed. 3 years ago I wrote: A little over priced and a lot over sold. Just had the breakfast special today for 18 bucks, and did not get that kind of value. It was only OK. The fruit was under ripe, the cheese was processed, and the biscuit was dry. All typical restaurant corner cutting. The local is great, but tables rock and chairs are only so so. The kitchen staff is friendly and efficient in contrast with the counter staff which acts indifferent and hurried, spouting empty polite phrases that are just going through the motions. Hardly the place it was before when it was called Cafe Trieste, and not that special. I suggest Gaylord's across the street where the welcome is real and so is the coffee and food.
I had a doctor's appointment and some hungry time to kill. So I stopped by and ordered a nice chicken pasta. It was served hot and delicious. Nice atmosphere, great, friendly people 👍
2026 CURRENT MENU prices pics. Good, not great, local spot. Don’t look at old menu pics here showing $10 burrito that’s now $13🙂 Breakfast burrito was good, nothing special, very generic/vanilla, but for that, good. It’s 40% giant potato home fries though..see pic, and that was only in HALF the burrito! Tortilla was gooey and soft, that and the side sauce were the better parts. Place is a typical local spot, wood furnishings everywhere, nothing fancy, peaceful and sunny in the morning😊
What happened?? The quality of breakfast has drastically diminished. In the last 4 orders the eggs have been way over cooked and the yolks aren't even runny. The chili flakes have been completely missing, and in the last order the home fries that are supposed to come with the order were completely missing. Sad to see the quality of what formerly was a good restaurant diminish so drastically. So dissapointing.
While it's quite nice vibes, and the coffee is good, I had such a dissapointing pasta that I'm actually compelled to write a review. The sauce was fine, vegetables were a little chunky but that's a style, but the rigatoni was horrendously overcooked. Idk if they just have a batch of par cooked that they messed up, or screwed up mine in particular, but it really was genuinely awful. If you come here, come for the coffee and pastries, but steer clear of the kitchen. Or at least the pasta.
I am so disappointed. This use to be my favorite and I would come here weekly. I can tell you a few things that changed. This avocado breakfast is super greasy. The egg use to be sunny side and almost cooked like it was poached. The bread was overcooked amd the potatoes are no longer the purples, reds, and light brown medley with rosemary seasoning. I also use to have arugula included as a garnish and the presentation use to be so much better. I would have rated them a 4.5 if they still told their chef to prepare it the way they use to. The customer service was just....blah. The bartender never smiled and didn't even look people amd make a connection.

I had a mediocre coffee experience here. I got a decaf double espresso and it was 5$ (was charged additional 35 cents for decaf) I had to ask them for milk and it wasn't hot. Ok, maybe it was hotter before I put milk in it, but the staff also barely acknowledged my existence, didn't make me feel good. I do think their patio is great and I'll revise my review after trying their pizza.

I had bad experience of customer service. The cashier lady on 1/11 morning time around 9am did give us bad attitude that amounts to bias and discrimination. She did not even look at our face and did give us bad look whenever we asked her. The four of us shocked the way she served and we found similar testimony from other East Africa clients of the cafe. Please address this issue as soon as possible before we seek other escalated means to this discriminatory attitude and treatment of the person. Thanks!
Went in here thinking this place was an Italian style espresso bar but left disappointed. I asked the attendant if their eclairs were filled with custard - traditional - which I wanted - and she didn't know so she asked someone else who told her it was. It turned out to be filled with generic whipping cream and covered in cheap over sweet chocolate and the pastry part was dry and hard. I also ordered a quad Americano and she gave me a quad espresso. I just wasted $10 & as an Italian American I suggest you go elsewhere.
Absolutely outrageous. My service animal and I were denied entry even after being paying customers. A gentleman, who appeared to be an owner or manager, did not allow us to sit inside because my PSA service animal did not have on a vest. This is in violation of federal law. Sadly, I don’t have time to hire a lawyer and sue them, and when I called the city, they didn't care. (I guess when you’re mayor a criminal under FBI investigation what can you expect) I guess as a restaurant, you can just continue discriminating against people with no consequences. The saddest thing is, I came to your restaurant with my friends from out of town because I wanted to support a local business. 🤷♂️ never coming back. #Discrimination

If I could give them a 0 I would have. They were very rude and uncomedating. I don't know about the food because it was obvious my kind wasn't welcomed. So I suggested we go next door much better choice in every way
