Great cafe to spend an afternoon! Love how many food options there is and the desserts were tasty! The cafe offers outdoor seating which is perfect on a sunny day. Although I do have to warn you the pigeons there will steal you food and a few of them are pretty aggressive... they keep coming back and I couldn’t chase them away😂 Keep a close eye on your delicious meal 👀

Stopped in here while waiting for my girlfriend who had an appointment at the nearby Kaiser. I walked past a lot of places to get here and I am glad I did. The inside felt cozy and comfortable, the kind of place you want to get a coffee & a pastry, sit down with a book and waste a few hours. It is going to take time to prepare your drink, longer than the big chains but you can't rush a good coffee you know. They had a nice selection of pastries that all looked good but I was here for lunch. I grabbed a menu which had a lot of options available. Pasta, pizza, breakfast foods, sandwiches and panini's. I ordered a double latte and the turkey and bacon panini. After getting my latte I headed out to the back patio to await my food. I didn't need to wait long for the food to come out. It had a nice little salad on the side that I wasn't expecting, some pickles and some peppers. The panini was excellent, the bread nice and crunchy and just enough of the aioli so that it wasn't overpowering. The very simple salad made an excellent side for this panini. Just some leafy greens and dressing. The latte was was great, really hit the spot. Overall a very satisfying experience. If I lived in Oakland I might consider making this a regular stop but alas I do not live here.

I was sick so I ordered lentil soup and a freshly squeezed orange juice. After I ordered, the meal came in about one minute, maybe less. The juice, the lentils, and the bread were all delicious. Money well spent, no complaints at all.

Really good ice tea and muffins. The muffins are like 4 dollars, and are very big.

The sandwiches are SO GOOD. The bread is always super fresh and delicious, I love their recipes, and they have great sauces. The staff is lovely and I enjoy dining in, especially at their outdoor seating. Whenever I order for pickup, the food is ready very quickly. They also have great desserts!

Cafe Chiave is consistently exceptional. The coffee is always outstanding, the food is truly top-tier, and the staff are genuinely cheerful and welcoming every single time. You immediately feel comfortable the moment you walk in. The music, the atmosphere, and the overall aesthetic create a beautiful, relaxed vibe that makes you want to stay longer and keep coming back. This place gets everything right — quality, service, and ambiance. Easily one of the best cafés around!

This spot is a hidden gem. Great fresh rolls and rich miso soup. You must get the gyoza; it may be the best you’ll have in the bay.

Friends & localities: I've been eating at Geta for decades: Never got paper-thin sliced sushi Pricey, generous portions & worth the experience. "Charismatic" staff is a plus- -girlfriends may get jealous !

Small place, attentive staff, amazing sushi. - Their rolls are stuffed to the brim with sushi. - The salmon sashimi is a large portion, and super good. - We also tried their Geta don. The tuna was amazing!! The onsen egg was really great!!! I loved the spicy scallop roll. My friends really enjoyed the real cali roll. The hamachi roll was great too. My only complaint is that the rice consistency wasn’t great and seemed basically unseasoned.

I adore this place. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is cozy and the service is quick and efficient. Have I been here twice in one week? Yes. It’s my favorite sushi in the neighborhood! It’s tiny, so you might have to wait for a table. It’s a popular take out spot.

IMO best sushi in the area. Freshest hotate nigiri. Amaebi is the best in bay area (not exaggerating). It comes with the shrimp head fried and also very good! Rolls are pretty good too but they certainly specialize on the nigiri/sashimi type. The menu is also always super cute doodles🥺🥰food comes out pretty quickly too!

Been here 2x now (dinner about 10days ago and lunch today) and finally writing a review. BEST family/small sushi restaurant probably in the surrounding zip codes! We usually go to RnR Sushi a few minutes away, but after trying Geta, RnR is a backup now :) Geta isn't big (a little more than 20 seats), so if you arrive at peak mealtimes, expect a wait for a seat (this place is popular & you'll see lots of takeout orders being picked up too). On Xmas eve (today), we came at 130pm for a late lunch b4 they close at 2pm, and we got the last 2 seats at the sushi bar (they place was still full when we left at 2pm). I went with a friend who doesn't eat much raw fish (he likes only raw tuna, otherwise he says it's too 'fishy'), and a friend who has been to some VERY nice/expensive Japanese restaurant/sushi places, and they BOTH like Geta and want to come back! That says a lot! We all thought the prices are reasonable given the portion size preparation, and freshness. We def like that they call their CA rolls "real CA roll" because they use real crab, not imitation crab meat. The avocado tuna roll was delicious - generous amount of tuna. The tempura was great - came out hot and crispy, the batter thin (not thick or gummy). The Agedashi Tofu appetizer was so melt in your mouth good - soft fluffy tofu with a thin crispy shell in a light sweet soy sauce (one of the best agedashi tofu I've had in the Bay Area), and I finally tried monkfish liver! Def ck out Geta if you're in the area :) Attentive, helpful, and friendly staff. Lots of specials - look at the various postings on the wall after you're seated!

By far my favorite sushi in the Bay. The nigiri sake pieces were so fresh and HUGE. Fun atmosphere, awesome staff and great food. Worth every minute of the wait for one of the few tables.

New to the area but I feel like this is one of those local gems. Small establishment but big servings. Highly recommend their fried oysters (really fresh) and deluxe nigiri sampler. We're definitely coming back for their omakase option.

A tiny "hole in the wall" with a take out spot vibe, Geta's humble environs downplay what is the best sushi in Oakland. This is not a spot with an expansive roll menu that dazzles with sauces and fire, but more of a place committed to the craft and quality of the best possible nigiri and sashimi (plus some classic rolls like a real crab California) -- all at extremely reasonable prices. Tremendous quality, and a variety of fish not often seen, Geta sources the best local and Japanese seafood products. Coming here for me is exciting! This isn't a fancy restaurant, nor is it large. There are three tables that hold 4 people. And a bar that seats 4. The majority come here for takeout -- even though they shun doing business with food delivery apps. You gotta call, or show up in person to place an order. My strong recommendation is to dine in alone (making seating at the bar easier) or with one friend who loves quality like you do, or to come to the restaurant before placing your take out order so that you can select from the "curtain" of hand drawn specials cards. Where the standard and take out menus only showcase a basic selection of classics, one of Geta's secrets is the list of special items on offer -- a list almost as long as the standard menu. The other secret, barely advertised, is the omakase menu of either 10 or 15 pieces. It makes for a very special and relatively quick meal -- would be awesome to come here before a movie or a concert. The service is very efficient yet pleasant -- they know what they have here and how small it is. They want you to eat, and really enjoy it, but then move along. I love it!

This is a small but cozy restaurant. Walked in during a rainy day and the food is beyond expectation. The Chirashi Don is fresh and well seasoned. Uni nigiris are from local (definitely worse than Hokkaido ones :) but still worth trying. Service is attentive as well.

This is so small sushi place with only few tables set up, so don't expect to get in so easily! But the food is so good, the fish is so fresh and everything is authentic and of high quality. It's my favorite! If you order the sweet shrimp sushi you also get the head as tempura! Gyudon was a bit too big even if shared between 2 people but we also ordered many things so that might be more of the reason.

Super delicious and affordable! I had always heard great things about this place, and now I know why. The sushi was huge and very affordable. The donburi was bomb. Even the little treat they leave with the bill was yummy. The place is small, but it’s lively and full of energy. I love a lot of sushi spots in the east bay, but this one might be near the top of the list!

One of the best places to get sushi in the east bay. It's super small seating only 20 people maybe. It's worth the wait though. Their service is fast and nice. All their rolls are made to order and delicious.

Coffee Chiave has become my go-to for a simple solo breakfast or brunch. The casual atmosphere makes it easy to settle into a small table by yourself and catch up on reading or knock out a few personal tasks without feeling rushed or out of place. I always opt for the breakfast special—they offer one each day, at least whenever I’ve been—and it hasn’t disappointed yet. Today’s was a chorizo scramble with perfectly crispy home fries, fresh pico de gallo, and crumbled feta. Hearty without being heavy. A nice touch: their coffee for here comes in small, medium, or large mug options (medium shown). And if you can snag the spot by the window, do it—nothing like a little vitamin D with your morning meal.

Location is casual local cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. Great for study and casual meet up. Service is more of self service with cleaning up after yourself despite the tip culture. Food is great with variety of pastries and sweets. Drinks are larger than other coffee shops. There are some seasonal specialties like cast iron frittata, delicious and worth to come back.

Bagel was soft, salmon tasted fresh, slightly more cream cheese than I preferred but I just wiped it off. Overall tasty! Also got a caramel latte and it is delish!

Teriyaki chicken and tempura is very good. Went twice already. The California roll had to order again so delicious. The lion king needs work.

This is my Japanese fix for a long time. A family style Japanese owned and operated by a Japanese family. The food is authentic. The service is on the spot. You only have too go now. And because of inflation, it gets expensive, the two of us is another $90, but the food quality is great. I wish I could dine in again once the Covid is gone.

A cozy sushi place in town. Space is limited. Good sushi and lovely menu on the wall! Portion is a bit smaller than what I have had at other places but overall it's good for the price. Fish was fresh. Gets really packed during dinner so come a bit earlier to get seated right away.

2026 CURRENT MENU prices pics. Good, not great, local spot. Don’t look at old menu pics here showing $10 burrito that’s now $13🙂 Breakfast burrito was good, nothing special, very generic/vanilla, but for that, good. It’s 40% giant potato home fries though..see pic, and that was only in HALF the burrito! Tortilla was gooey and soft, that and the side sauce were the better parts. Place is a typical local spot, wood furnishings everywhere, nothing fancy, peaceful and sunny in the morning😊

Decline in service. We used to frequent this place when we lived next to for years we moved away in 2019. We go whenever we are in Oakland. But recently are noticing a decline in service and menu. Only one other table was seated at lunch and we were never rounded on to place an order, we ended up leaving to another sushi spot. What happens to this spot!?

While it's quite nice vibes, and the coffee is good, I had such a dissapointing pasta that I'm actually compelled to write a review. The sauce was fine, vegetables were a little chunky but that's a style, but the rigatoni was horrendously overcooked. Idk if they just have a batch of par cooked that they messed up, or screwed up mine in particular, but it really was genuinely awful. If you come here, come for the coffee and pastries, but steer clear of the kitchen. Or at least the pasta.

I am so disappointed. This use to be my favorite and I would come here weekly. I can tell you a few things that changed. This avocado breakfast is super greasy. The egg use to be sunny side and almost cooked like it was poached. The bread was overcooked amd the potatoes are no longer the purples, reds, and light brown medley with rosemary seasoning. I also use to have arugula included as a garnish and the presentation use to be so much better. I would have rated them a 4.5 if they still told their chef to prepare it the way they use to. The customer service was just....blah. The bartender never smiled and didn't even look people amd make a connection.

I had a mediocre coffee experience here. I got a decaf double espresso and it was 5$ (was charged additional 35 cents for decaf) I had to ask them for milk and it wasn't hot. Ok, maybe it was hotter before I put milk in it, but the staff also barely acknowledged my existence, didn't make me feel good. I do think their patio is great and I'll revise my review after trying their pizza.

Absolutely outrageous. My service animal and I were denied entry even after being paying customers. A gentleman, who appeared to be an owner or manager, did not allow us to sit inside because my PSA service animal did not have on a vest. This is in violation of federal law. Sadly, I don’t have time to hire a lawyer and sue them, and when I called the city, they didn't care. (I guess when you’re mayor a criminal under FBI investigation what can you expect) I guess as a restaurant, you can just continue discriminating against people with no consequences. The saddest thing is, I came to your restaurant with my friends from out of town because I wanted to support a local business. 🤷‍♂️ never coming back. #Discrimination

If I could give them a 0 I would have. They were very rude and uncomedating. I don't know about the food because it was obvious my kind wasn't welcomed. So I suggested we go next door much better choice in every way

We have been coming to GETA for at least a decade. It used to be a place filled with warmth, good food and the kind of neighborhood feeling that made us drive back from San Francisco just to eat here. We had not visited for about a year and tonight showed us that the restaurant has changed for the worse. We arrived at 7:35pm. The young male server told us to sit anywhere we liked, so we chose the counter. As soon as we sat down he abruptly asked us to move to a table instead. His tone was unnecessarily sharp but we moved without arguing. When ordering I asked for hot water. He said they only had hot tea, which would have been fine if it had been delivered with any patience or clarity. His attitude was rigid and dismissive, so I simply asked for regular water. Immediately afterward he began pushing us to order. I told him I needed more time. He asked how much time I needed because they were closing soon. At that moment we had been seated for no more than two minutes. We placed a $130+ order. A few minutes later he returned from the kitchen to tell us that the deluxe nigiri was unavailable. No alternatives were suggested and there was no effort to help us find another option. We changed our order quickly because the pressure to hurry never stopped. The nigiri platter we ended up with came out fast but unfortunately the quality was not what we remembered. The shrimp and several cuts of fish did not look fully fresh. During the meal our plates were taken away almost immediately each time and we were repeatedly pushed toward paying the bill. When it was time to pay they checked our ID once which was already unusual. After the card was processed a second ID check was requested by a different staff member. At that point the entire experience felt careless and unwelcoming. From sitting down to walking out the whole visit was under twenty five minutes. We fully understand that small local restaurants face many pressures and we genuinely want to support them. We also understand the desire to close on time. What we cannot accept is being treated like an inconvenience. Tonight we felt rushed and dismissed from the moment we entered to the moment we paid. It is sad to say this about a place that carries so many memories for us. I hope this was simply an off night and that the hospitality and quality we once loved can return. I believe this will be my last visit.

TLDR: unsanitary fish, sloppy rolls, rude customer service. REVIEW: I’ve been to Geta probably 10 times in recent years, but after my recent experience will not go back. My group showed up at opening time to eat but they told us to wait 15 more minutes because their delivery was late that morning and they were still getting things prepared. After 15 minutes we went in. We were largely ignored. After an exasperated waiter took our order, no water was brought until we asked. Our order was not taken until we hailed the water down. Eventually, the food that was delivered to our table was inedible. The rolls were SO SLOPPY, falling apart and oozing with mayo. The fish in our rolls and the sashimi tasted spoiled or like it had been cut on a dirty cutting board — the fish had a stale odor and taste. Simply disgusting and extremely poor quality... not what I used to think about the food here. We didn’t finish any dishes and left quickly thereafter.

Save your money. Honestly probably the worst sushi I’ve had. Staff wasn’t super friendly either. Not sure how it got so many positive reviews. Rice didnt even taste like sushi rice. Go see for yourself but may be wise to have a backup food plan.
