Lovely little airport, either arriving or leaving. Always only 10-15 Minutes through passport control and baggage reclaim. Taxis are available outside, but it you're able-bodied you're missing part of the quirkyness of Gibraltar if you're not walking across the empty runway, the imposing rock towering above you, the ocean on you're left and algericas away to you're right, across the bay. Leaving is an equally pleasant end to your holiday with a great veranda upstairs in departures. Perfect for supping a coffee in the sun whilst watching your flight arriving to the peninsula.
A place to always remember and we finally got lucky to visit Gibraltar and being able to see Morocco from Gibraltar. Wonderful visit and the tour guide was just perfect. Gibraltar was a duty free Country where everything was half price, food was not too good there, but view from the rock which we had to get special bus to do the tours. Amazing monkeys, great cave with 3D scenes, one of the most dangerous Tarmac in the world where we have been able to walk on, see planes, take pictures and of course touch. Remember to bring your passport with you as you need to go through customs. I highly recommend a visit to this country and also remember that alcohol and tobacco shops are duty free so buy heaps lol
Gibraltar International Airport (GIB), previously North Front Airport, is the only airport serving the British territory of Gibraltar, owned by the Ministry of Defence and operated by the Royal Air Force. It is known for its short runway and unique design, including a road that crosses the runway for pedestrians. The airport is located just 100 meters from the border with Spain and serves as a gateway to the Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz, with flights to destinations like London and Manchester. Why it's unique : Runway Walkway: The public road that crosses the runway is a distinctive and famous aspect of Gibraltar Airport. Proximity to Spain: Its close proximity to the Spanish border makes it a convenient point of entry for accessing the Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz in Spain. Military Use: In addition to civilian traffic, the airport is frequently used for military purposes.
Tucked into the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar International Airport is unlike any other. Locally known as North Front Airport, it straddles a unique geopolitical and geographical crossroad—serving not only the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar but also acting as a gateway for travelers heading into southern Spain’s Costa del Sol. Originally opened in 1939 as a British military airbase, the airport’s single grooved asphalt runway—stretched from rock blasted off the iconic Rock of Gibraltar—now handles both military and civilian flights in a rare dual-use setup. What truly sets Gibraltar’s airport apart is its runway that intersects a public road. Winston Churchill Avenue, once closed every time a plane landed or took off, now sees its vehicular traffic rerouted through a tunnel opened in 2023. But pedestrians still cross the live runway—making it one of the few places in the world where you might literally walk across an airstrip. Unsurprisingly, the airport has earned a reputation as one of the world’s most “extreme” due to fierce crosswinds, urban proximity, and the nerve-wracking low-altitude approaches required in winter. Though modest in size, the terminal can handle up to one million passengers annually, with around 424,000 travelers passing through in 2024. Most flights are to and from the UK—served by easyJet and British Airways—with seasonal connections to Morocco via Royal Air Maroc. Its location just 100 meters from the Spanish border makes it a favorite entry point for holidaymakers bound for Sotogrande, Marbella, and other Spanish coastal gems. Crossing into Spain from the airport is relatively straightforward on foot, though not without quirks—luggage trolleys can’t be wheeled across, the pavement is uneven, and you’ll need to show your passport, especially as a non-EU visitor. Car rentals can be trickier too; Avis is the only onsite agency, and its cars are parked in Spain, requiring a short walk across the border (plus an added fee). Still, many find the savings on duty-free items and the unique setting make it all worthwhile. From its origins in WWII to modern-day challenges like airline collapses and evolving border controls, Gibraltar Airport is a place where history, politics, and aviation intersect—literally. It’s not just a transit point; it’s an experience in its own right.
Lovely little Airport! Bigger than expected if I'm honest. There's a duty free after security, great prices and you can bring 4 liters of spirits back. There's a cafe, everything is in UK pound, we paid in Euro to use the last, not sure the exchange rate is the best, but whatever. Had a nice coffee and toasted ham and cheese roll. There was only 2 flights on the board, so very quiet and relaxing and you can sit out and enjoy the last drip of sun 🌞
I've been to Gibraltar 🇬🇮 over 15 times over the year's but that was by car from Spain 🇪🇸 each time. So it was time to have a holiday in Gibraltar 🇬🇮 and this time flying in.its has a reputation for being a tricky place to land and take off because of the possible winds passing the rock, we had booked an easyjet flights ✈️ and I have to say both our flights in and out was actually fantastic 😀 the airport is small and not many flights at all all clean and nice with very helpful staff. You can get a taxi outside or walk 5 minutes to the the bus stop by frontier
A very peaceful airport. Our airline is British Airways with connecting flights via Cathay Pacific. The toilets are clean here, they do not have a bidet though. You can buy souvenirs from the Duty free stores. There is also a mini bar where you can buy light snacks if you are hungry.
An incredible experience, it boasts a stunning location, right on the Rock of Gibraltar. On landing or departing we are treated to incredible views of the Rock itself. It has a viewing terrace where you can watch planes land and take off. One of the things that stunned me was the fact that the main road into Gibraltar crosses the runway. Although it sounds nerve-wracking, it is very safe and adds a bit of a trill for visitors. It is a spacious and modern airport.... comfortable and has a good range of shops and restaurants. The people who work there are very nice and helpful. I definitely recommend this airport
Nice small-ish clean spacious airport . Small check-in area as flights only go to and arrive from Britain. I think there is only a few flights in and out every couple of days. When you get through check and security you end up in an area with a couple of duty free shops , a private lounge area , a very small little bar/pub and a food hall in which you choose you food ( hot and cold available) then take it to a desk and make payment . Then there is a seating area and an outside balcony which you can get some great views of the occasional plane taking off or landing and the rock itself . The food hall is quite expensive ( a guy in the queue for the tills in front of me purchased 2 chicken tikka sticks and a couple of hot drinks and I’m sure it came to about £64 !!!!) also take note if you are flying into Gibraltar that you may get diverted to Malaga if the weather is bad or the airport has a problem . Apparently it happens often . It is an inconvenience but the coach trip from Malaga to la Linea is quite pleasant as you get some fantastic views on the way as you pass through Malaga and Marbella.
What you'd expect from any relatively small airport - not much to do see nor do, not the comfiest nor nicest and queues can be very long. I do LOVE that they close the road from Spain to Gibraltar when a plane comes to land and then when it has taxi'd out of the way they reopen the road. It's really cool to walk directly across a runway!
For a small airport the terminal has a reasonable number of shops & the best duty free prices I’ve seen. There is only one restaurant with a long slow queue, the day I was there, & that was out of season. The terminal would benefit from a dedicated coffee shop. Excellent view of the Rock & runway from the terminal building which has plug sockets next to the high seats. There are outside table and chairs with even better views of the runway. Only 4 arrivals and departures on the day I flew out. My 10 min taxi journey to airport was £10.
Gibraltar Airport is a small but very comfortable airport. The location is stunning, as you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Rock of Gibraltar and the sea. Pros: - Easy Access: Getting to the airport is very straightforward and doesn’t take much time from the city. - Services: Despite its size, the airport offers good services, such as shops and cafes. - Efficiency: Security and check-in procedures are quick, making it easy to catch your flight on time. Cons: - Size: The airport is small, so some travelers may feel crowded during peak times. - Limited Flights: Flight options may be fewer compared to larger airports. Overall, Gibraltar Airport is an excellent choice for travelers looking for a comfortable and convenient travel experience in a beautiful area. I highly recommend it!
