We had lunch at Red Hook Curry House today. The food was exceptional! The Mango Lassi really had the taste of fresh mangoes and the Chai was excellent! Almost like the chai we had in South India. We ordered the Shaag Ponir, the Lamb Korai (hotpot), Chicken with lychee and Lamb stew. They were all delicious and tender. We all loved it. We will definitely be coming back here and bring our friends. The desserts were good too. A bit on the sweet side for me but we all shared anyway. We had the pistachio pudding and the cheese with sweet cream. They were both very good! PS. Restaurant is keeping customers and employees safe by asking for the vaccine card. So make sure you take a picture of your vaccine card on your phone so you can show it.

Excellent , very flavorful lamb dishes. The house special biryani -- with chicken, shrimp and lamb -- is also a standout. Please support this lovely family during Corona by ordering take-out often!

This has quickly become one of my favorite places to eat in Red Hook. The food is out of this world delicious, my personal top recommendations are the Shag Ponir for vegetarians and the Chicken Madras (if you're up for a spice challenge go for the Chicken Vindaloo). The owner works front of house and is very friendly, as well as the rest of the staff. I also recommend this restaurant to those who eat gluten free or have celiac disease, they are very accommodating and much appreciated by a member of my dining party.

I have been to this restaurant twice and the Balti Beef and the Korai Beef that I had tried for the first time was excellent and a lot better than most of the other Indian foods that I have tried in the past. This is in regards to takeout only. This is a very good place to go to. And it has been here for over 15 years with decent Indian people.

My local favorite! Off-menu Chana (or paneer) tikka masala is my go-to. And the Peshwari Naan!

I have been going to this restaurant for almost 20 years it is always great the food is delicious Muhammad the owner and Chef will always make things the way you like didn't think I would be able to find a restaurant like this outside of the city. Prices are very reasonable and on Sunday they have a buffet

They always do me right. The menu items are great, but their big winner is the sunday amd tuesday buffet. If you want authentic Tandoori style food, this is the place to go.

I lived in Jackson Heights, Queens for years which is known as 'the' place to go for Indian food in NYC. I knew some Manhattan residents who would come to this Queens neighborhood specifically for the authentic Indian food. I relocated to this area years ago, and have been coming to Red Hook Curry House for as long as I can remember. I have never, ever, had a bad meal here. In fact, I would choose to eat here over any Jackson Heights restaurant that I've eaten at. The food is that good. Several years ago I ate here with a student visiting from New Delhi. He said it was the best Indian food he had eaten while in America. The decor hasn't changed, and can use some updating. The baskets they served the Naan in were old and looked like it was time for them to be replaced. But the food is still top notch. Take out is always great, but the food is even better when you dine in, and have it brought to your table hot from the kitchen. Go for the food as opposed to anything else and you shouldn't be disappointed if you like Indian food.

Can you believe I almost gave this place 4.5 stars really only because the bread pudding was actually icee cream otherwise it was fantastic!

The food is amazing. Lots of changes to eating out during covid era, it's a lot to get acclimated to as a customer. The Curry House is handling it well, taking extra care to be cautious and safe. And the cooks work extra hard to make the to-go food seem just as special as back when eating in was easy/normal, every dish is garnished. We're really glad we stopped- thank you♥️

This is one of my favorites Indian restaurants EVER!, The food is so delicious and is cook fresh you can see them cooking in the kitchen depending where you sit. It's always quiet when we go and I really like that. If feels like you are eating food cooked with love. Its just so good!!!!

Great authentic Indian food. The buffet is amazing and fun. You feel like your actually in India when your there. Location is great, parking is good as well.love the dessert. The rice pudding is unique and delicious. Love the chai tea also. This place is one of my go to spots in Redhook. Great place to go with family or friends. Price isn't bad for what your getting.the food is fresh and flavorful. Love the sauces and dips they have for you to try.

Where do I even begin?.. I first visited this hidden gem of indian cuisine in 2008, my life would never be the same ever again.. The traditional music captivates you upon entering and the friendly and accommodating staff is nothing short of incredible. The owner is always present and actively involved with service and preparation. Words don't describe the quality and consistency of food. While Tuesday and Sunday buffets are the busiest and most popular times to attend, their menu during non-buffet hours will exceed your expectations. Whether looking to dine in or take out, the Red Hook Curry House is a must-try choice that I'd confidently say you'd return to time and time again.

Excellent. Fresh, well served. We go there often and it is consistent and delicious. The lamb korma, Tikka masala, shrimp biryani, salmon tandoori, are all so good. And if you can't finish, they give you rice in the take away box so that you have some for your leftovers.

I had a fantastic time at this location!! The food was excellent, and the staff was very respectful and professional!! I got the Paratha and tandoori chicken tikka with rice. It was delicious, and I highly recommend others to get it. What I also love about this place is that all the meat options are halal, and that’s a plus for everyone that has that dietary restriction.

I have been coming here for years. The owners always ask me how my children are. They have seen my children come in as infants to grown teenagers now. I truly miss the buffet nights. I have tried other Indian cuisines (including Disney’s Epcot) and nothing compares in my opinion. This is the best Indian cuisine. We even travel a good 40 mins each way just to enjoy food from red hook’s curry house. The owner and his wife have always been pleasant. The kitchen is SUPER clean! Thank you Curry house for years & years of delicious food. Keep it coming !

Don't judge from the outside! Authentic, homey, byob buffet. Loved the clearly defined vegan, vegetarian & meat options. The copper fired pots add to the warm aesthetic & the waiting staff were VERY watchful, helpful & HONEST! My husband left his phone on the table as we were leaving & a young man who was waiting tables immediately noticed & brought it to him. Great little place!

They don’t wanna serve you if you’re not vaccinated which is not right. If you wanna ask people to show they’re vaccinated that’s fine but just make the non vaccinated people wear masks until they’re seated like all the other restaurants instead of belittling them for not being vaccinated. Other than that the food is amazing. So much better than the Indian restaurant in Saugerties

E
Erin Frederick

I’m new to the area and was craving some yummy takeout and this hit the spot! The bhujia (onion fritters) were so delicious (I’m craving them as I write). And the chicken tikka masala was the perfect balance of sweet and heat. My children LOVE this dish and it was not too hot for them. My husband lives a good lamb dish and they have a few to choose from. Lassi was slightly sweeter than we are used to but add ice and it’s great!

L
Lisa K

This restaurant serves delicious food. If you dine inside the place (at least during the pandemic), you'll need to show proof of vaccination against Covid, so you don't have to worry about putting your health at risk. We usually order the chicken tikka masala, shrimp korma and sides of papadum (crisp lentil-based wafer) and tarka dal (garlic flavored lentils). If you order take-out on weekend evenings, call early. The order can take quite a while.

This is the absolute best place in the Hudson Valley for great authentic food. The Tandoori Chicken is brilliant and it goes nicely with the fish sauce. You must give the place a try and I’m positive you will become a frequent visitor. I will upgrade to five stars only if the owner starts to smile more. Great Staff, Great Food and a Great Location. Smile

Good Indian food for family (not fancy) and affordable prices. Service is fine and the buffet worth it. You can bring your own wine (priceless!) The place is a little bit dated, but OK, and the food quality could be more constant (depending at what time you go there) ...

D
Doug Basler

The food at this place is Amazeballs. So, why the 4 star rating?? The owner should stay out of the front of the house. He has zero personality. He tossed the menus on the table and spilled water all over while filling the glasses. Then just walked away and left us at the table for 10 minutes...we were the only table. That being said...I would go back for the food, and I would recommend the place. Don't go if you have somewhere else to be within a short time

B
Barb Crowell

We asked our waitress which should we do the buffet or order off the menu. She said the buffet, same quality of food and $15.00. And she was right the food was really good. And of course you can try a little of everything. The lamb was crazy good

E Hi-Chang
E Hi-Chang

Don’t let appearances food you, the food is very good. Plenty of indoor seating, but don’t expect lavish. It’s very basic inside; like a diner. I’ve only ever ordered take out, and know I would easily overlook this place based on appearances alone.

My family and I have been going to this restaurant for many years. My family has owned a home near Red Hook since I was little and moved there permanently after they retired. The buffet they previously had was varied, delicious and kept getting refilled except towards end of service of course. I was born , raised in Manhattan and have lived in queens for 36 years so I am extremely familiar with Indian food and the specialties according to which area the chef is from. This restaurant makes Delicious homey food! As for the service, the owner IS rough around the edges but not a bad guy and is hard working, especially with limited staff and high overhead. Not everyone is the same and he’s not OUTRIGHT rude nor speaks loudly. If you treat him naturally he actually has a nice sense of humor. At the end of the day the FOOD is fresh and delicious, the place is clean, prices are standard and vibe is peaceful. People can just be SO critical and be such divas!

A fine location for an Indian restaurant (they have the market cornered in that area), you would think after years of packed Sunday and Tuesday buffets, and steady flow from locals and travelers alike....that the owner would be a bit more pleasant, the service a bit more proficient, and the food a bit more consistent. After coming here regularly for the past 9 years, you'd think the owner (see? not even on a first name basis) would part with a smile or a thank you once in a while. No such luck. He is the same crabby man he has been since day one, humiliating his waitstaff in front of customers, and refusing to even LOOK happy. Consistent, but not the kind you are looking for. The food is good. Sometimes really good. My advice would be to skip anything but the Buffets, that's where you get the money's worth, and also try to arrive when it first opens. Not having Chicken Tikka Masala regularly on the buffets though is quite odd, and left completely to chance. The chai tea included with the buffet is delicious, and Tikka Masala aside....the food is usually tasty. The service is mostly poor. I am guessing this is the result of having such a fiery tempered and unfriendly boss, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. But I have yet to ever find a server or busser there who seemed to put any effort into making your dining experience smooth and a pleasure. Bottom line. Go to the buffet, don't expect to be greeted kindly (Unless you chance upon who I am assuming is the owners wife, very kind woman) , hope for Chicken Tikka Masala.

Average Indian food for the U.S., with moderate levels of oil, sugar, and food coloring. Wait staff is friendly, but the owner is perpetually grumpy and unfortunately involved with the ordering and checkout process. Atmosphere is somewhere between a restaurant and a cafeteria.

Pretty decent food. Owner looked like he hated being there... Or hated me... No eye contact... Quite uncomforting! Again, food was pretty good! Prefer the Hudson Curry house immensely.

The buffet is usually fine, though not always worth the price. The staff is friendly, but overworked and under supported, so service suffers.

The food was delicious, but the staff was not very friendly and the owner stood in the back watching us eat the whole time we were there.

C
Catherine Iuliano

First the good - the food was wonderful. Fresh, well prepared and tasty. Now the bad - the service was abysmal. Don't go here if you're in a hurry. We arrived right when they opened (5 pm) and were the first customers in through the door, yet we didn't get our meals until we had been sitting there for very nearly an hour and a half. This was a problem because we had tickets to an event 10 minutes away at 7 pm so we had to scarf down a few bites and then pack it up and take it with us to avoid being late. To his credit, the owner credited our bill 10% without even being asked, and was very apologetic (that gesture along with the quality of the food is why this isn't a one star review), so hopefully this was an isolated problem for them and not standard operating procedure, but it was bad, and not just for us. Several people got up and walked out while we were there because they weren't being waited on at all. It's a shame because the food, when we finally got it, was good, but I wouldn't go there again.

Rachael Gunning

Been to the Curry House several times now, although tonight was so bizarre it might be some time before I return. Generally, the food is good. The best prices are obviously buffet night if you want to eat a lot. Otherwise, portions for menu items are fine for their price. Fair amount of menu options for different meats and vegetarian dishes. The issue was the owner, who was the only server on a slow night. He was cold when we arrived, then after we received our food, the owner walked up to us and leaned over to observe us serve our food. I suddenly know how Quasimodo felt when Claude Frollo inspected his work. Suddenly, it was impossible to have a comfortable conversation or meal because his eyes lingered over us for the first half of our meal. Trust me when I say we were not particularly interesting to watch, although we had a lovely research session on saffron. His attitude, including getting and paying the check, makes me loathe another visit. He also packed up my friend's food in front of her when she had made indications she'd prefer to do it herself. All the while being aloof. I would only be comfortable returning on busy buffet nights when his attention is diverted elsewhere and I can discuss saffron in peace.

Great food with your stereotypical Indian IT help desk on the front line: Would give the food 5 stars and the service 1 star, which is how I landed on 3 stars. More context: I waited an hour after they said my order would be ready and barely got an apology from them. And even after waiting so long, they still managed to mess up the order - they missed one dish and didn’t include the naan bread we ordered (included another type of bread - being a white person, I’m sure they didn’t think I’d notice). Other reviews refer to the poor customer service as well. Disrespectful service: The guy at the front desk just stares at a calculator and doesn’t communicate with customers. There’s no greeting when you walk in and when he does acknowledge your presence, he only wants your phone number. Keep in mind, he’ll probably ask for that number three more times so be ready to endure that. There’s a lady that seems helpful but she basically plays the good cop in the whole routine. I give her some credit because she’s trying to help but on busy nights, she may as well be staring at that calculator. I get the sense they’re resting on their laurels of great food but eventually their poor customer service and horrible management will come back to bite them.

The buffet food was fine, but nothing to call home about. The service was almost non-existent, like they didn't care. The space by the entrance has some decent ambiance, but I was sat in a room with no windows and no ambiance.

The place had a musty smell and very dated interiors. The host was probably the owner. He was deeply stressed and didn’t seem very happy. Food was ok. Nothing to write home about.

Peter F

Quite mediocre on all counts. We arrived about 7pm on buffet night, but still decided to supplement the buffet with an a la carte menu item. The place was packed. Some buffet service trays were empty on arrival, and stayed empty for the hour+ we were there. The sauces were mid-West palate bland, basically hiding the lack of substantial meats or vegetables. Nothing stood out as flavorful or carefully prepared. The price for 2 buffets and 1 a la carte veggie dish was $46. Not a good price-quality ratio. All in all, an easily forgettable meal and restaurant. 😐

The samosas and chickpea appetizers were the things I ate that I liked

A

For openers, a midday Sunday lunch at 1:15 in the afternoon had no customers in the restaurant! That should have been a giveaway right off the bat. The owner appeared to be preoccupied and was not very friendly. Never-the-less we sat and awaited our appetizers. We were told that because there were not any customers, the Clay Oven was not activated so there was not going to be any specialty breads (Naan) available, after we had requested one such bread. Service was rather fast, which seemed to imply that the food may not have been made at that moment but was reheated. Our fears were confirmed. The food was not stale, but was clearly not fresh. The chicken (Chicken Bhuna) tasted like it might have been made a few days ago and I've been steeped in a sauce removing its taste and keeping the texture extremely soft. The sauce for the chicken appeared to come out of a jar, AS the author of this text is familiar with such jar sauces. The Basmati rice was also steeped in oil in order to keep the starchiness out. That is not how rice is made. The Samosa skins were pretty good but the interior again also appeared to be dated. The Onion Pakoras were made days earlier and flash-fried. The Malai kofta was created with the first "go-to" amateur ingredient of chain Indian restaurants; heavy cream. It also had an oily taste to it. Taking the overall experience, encompassing the not-so-friendly atmosphere and very average food, I will not be returning. This was not the type of Indian restaurant that I am accustomed to, being from India and having lived in this country for well over 50 years. That may not necessarily mean it's the worst Indian food available, but it did not suit my palate. If you are desperate for Indian food, I would recommend a trip down to New Windsor where there is a higher-quality fusion Indian restaurant located.

S
Summer Grace Flemister

Have heard him yelling at his waitresses in really disrespectful ways. Also overheard him behind homophobic and witnessed him stealing his waitresses tips. Don’t leave a tip here. Tips go directly to owner and waiters get none of it. Food is okay.

Disappointing Hudson valley Indian food. I went for the Sunday buffet, figuring this would be the best way to get a taste of everything they have to offer. The buffet is on for two hours and I arrived dead in the middle. My assumption is that the you would expect everything to be in supply at the buffet, instead it was nearly out if everything. I managed to try some of the veg stuff which was bland and boring overall. In my 10 minute wait for anything with chicken to be served, there was almost else left, so good luck eating it with bread or rice. The chicken was mostly dry and had more food coloring then flavor. The chicken malai kebab was probably the highlight, but since everyone was waiting for it, there was no chance of seconds. Give this place a pass.

M
Melissa Curran-Conner

When we arrived for buffet Sunday at 7:30 we sat for twenty minutes and had to get the attention of the wait staff to ask if we could go up to the buffet. There was no rice, the soup looked unappetizing and was unlabeled as to the ingredients. The vegetable entre was also empty. In general the presentation was not appealing. In addition there was no dessert even though it was suppose to be included. I may consider going there again for a meal from the menu but would not recommend the buffet.

M

I've been eating/getting takeout from the Curry House for about 1 and 1/2 years, and find that the quality has deteriorated in the last few months. Last night I ordered the special biryani with chicken, which I've enjoyed in the past. This time it was dry as dry could be, almost hard to eat because of this, and really had only a one-note flavor, no depth of flavor. I ate about 1/3 of it. And we got the wrong appetizer. I heard my husband order the fresh shrimp appetizer, which we had in the past. Instead, we got fried shrimp in a heavy batter again dry with no sauce. Lat time, I ordered a Persian-style shrimp dish with lentils I have had and enjoyre 3 or 4 times. This time it was much to spicy, and spicy in a raw way.The sauce was really very different in addition to being much more spicy. I think that the Curry House continues to do takeout only is part of the problem here. That relationship with the customer is lost. If eating in the restaurant, I would have pointed my concerns out to someone. But to call the restaurant, have to press the point with someone who is concerned about losing orders due this call, and wait for new food is not reasonable. I suspect that they have a different chef and/or have cut back on staff. Something isn't right there. I know times are tough and restaurants are hoping to generate more revenue to make up for the long covid year, and I support them. But cutting quality and making dishes in a random way (versus the loved recipe) and getting orders wrong isnt reasonable. It's a quick drive to Cinnamon in Rhinebeck, which is more costly but is fresh and good quality.

Pathetic food and terrible service. I don't know why they call it indian restaurant. This is no where near Indian food. Its Bangladeshi restaurant. Chef and whole staff is Bangladeshi. Do not go this place if you are looking for indian food.

Food is mediocre. Service is bad and slow. Got charged $20 bucks for a vegetarian dish that normally would cost around $14-$15. Recommend to find a different place to eat. Good luck with treating customers like that buddy.

Let me start by saying the food was great! I’ve gone here multiple times before and the food has always been great. However, today was the first time I have interacted with the owner and it makes me never want to go back. I’ve never been treated so rudely by an establishment. It started while ordering over the phone for takeout and continued once I got there and until I left. He was cold, aloof, rude, scolded/basically yelled at me for not being able to pick up his phone call when he knew and saw me waiting outside because I had arrived 15 minutes prior when the order was supposed to be ready ( which wasn’t an issue). The way I was treated is not how you should treat anyone, let alone customers. Like I said the food is great, and it’s a shame because there are so few good places in the area, but it’s not worth how bad you feel after interacting with him.

Honestly the worst Indian Cuisine that I have ever had. Called to order for my wife’s birthday because the restaurant we usually go to was closed. We ordered Two orders of chicken tikka masala 2 orders of Naan bread 2 orders vegetable samosa The tikka masala was bland had no flavor and not spicy at all. The samosa seemed to be a frozen samosa that was defrosted in a microwave. Was cold on the inside and again absolutely no flavor. The naan was burnt. We ended up throwing the food in the garbage. What little bit we did it got my wife and I violently Ill. If you want authentic high quality Indian food I would highly suggest Cinnamon Indian Cuisine in Rhinebeck. They truly have the best in the Hudson Valley. It is worth the 10 minute drive from the curry house Here is a picture of our food thrown in the garbage Save your money and do not eat here.

Just walked out after three sets of people were sat before we were. It’s buffet night and I can understand when things are a little more busy but the owner Mohammad new exactly what he was doing and rudely told my wife and I that we just had to wait until he was ready. I did not respond and just walked out as that’s the best way in my opinion to deal with conflicts with unreasonable people. I would like to add that Mohammad is not sole rude to us he was equally rude to all of his staff while we were waiting and to many of the exiting customers. Basically it’s a him issue clearly. We have eaten here over the years off and on and the food is “ok” at best but the issue is there is no place else that has Indian food to speak of. I truly hope that a new place opens up so we can partake again in eating Indian locally as we will never return to give Mohammad another chance to treat my wife and I badly again. I wish I could recommend a different local Indian restaurant but this one was the only “OK” place food wise.

$5 for Naan Chicken not freshly cooked some pieces were like tofu. Dinner plates were ice cold which is unusual for so called Indian restaurants. Sauce bland - lacked spices

The man in the restaurant is super creepy he never stops staring at the guests. He just sits there and watches guests until they finish their food.

Owner is extremely rude and unprofessional. Walked inside to order a take out lunch and he tricked me into buying garlic man knowing that hadn’t made it yet and then tried substituting it for another type of bread. I was still going to buy the food until he goes I have to charge you 4% more for a credit card. At that point I said thanks have a nice day. Very rude mannered as well.

We were customers for years but no longer. Twice now ordered take out and was given a time of 1 hour for pickup only to show up and wait another hour. No apologies, no money taken off the bill, nothing comped. His excuse was “ the kitchen was busy” meanwhile others came in after us and left before. Going to Cinnamon in Rhinebeck- better food, better service and better atmosphere. Also it’s long been known he takes the tips from the servers and keeps them.

Sheesh Kabab is terrible , they served old kabab probably 2-3 days old, when we mentioned he didn’t even say sorry just took the kabab, no offers nothing and samosa filling also was old and service was really bad
