We were party of 6, ordered worwonton soup (huge bowl), Mongolian beef, lamb, honey walnut shrimps - everything tasty, especially srimps:-) our server was super nice and accurate. I would recommend this place!

As someone from the Bay Area, I can honestly say Frank Fat’s is hands down the best Chinese food I’ve had in Sacramento — and now officially my go-to spot! The vibe is super charming with that classic old-school Chinese bar feel, giving it a warm and nostalgic atmosphere while still feeling modern and welcoming. The setup is beautiful, and the service matched the quality of the food. Everything came out hot, fresh, and full of flavor. Here’s what we ordered: Combination Platter (8/10): yu kwok, salt & pepper chicken, spring rolls, and pot stickers. Everything was delicious, but the pot stickers stole the show. Sang Gai Shee Chow Mein (10/10): Truly some of the best chow mein I’ve had in years — flavorful, perfectly balanced, and cooked to perfection. Mongolian Beef (10/10): Tender, savory, and absolutely spot on. Steamed Rice: Simple, fresh, and a perfect pairing with everything. Frank Fat’s absolutely exceeded my expectations. If you’re looking for authentic, high-quality Chinese food with a fun atmosphere and great service in Sacramento, this is the place. I can’t wait to come back again and again!

Really great food and service. The Peking Duck is the best I have had in Sacramento. The Immigrant Beef is my favorite dish. It's also a unique dish that you likely won't find anywhere else. The only challenge is parking. You can pay for parking at nearby lots. I can usually find cheaper street parking when there is not an event at the Golden 1 Center.

The restaurant has such a classic vibe and the prices are reasonable for the quality and experience you get.

Unassuming entrance to a small funky space. Reservations recommended, especially for Friday & Saturday night. The bar handles the overflow and is a great place for 1 or 2. Spend time with the menu, order an app & drink while you consider the options. If you like to add spice try the black bean chili oil instead of the standard chili oil.

A really nice local Chinese restaurant with great atmosphere and service. The speakeasy vibe is definitely present, and the decorations are a great touch. The food was fresh and hot and came out fast. Definitely recommend reservations on a busy night. Also, you can’t go wrong with the banana cream pie, it’s very good!

Frank Fat’s is a quaint cultural experience. The service is exceptional and personal. The people are cheerful, knowledgeable, helpful, and genuine. The people and decor make this a special place to visit. The food was delicious and lovely presented. There is a nice selection of teas. We enjoyed the Jasmine. We had War Wonton soup with a light broth, and a chicken vegetable dish. We so enjoyed our visit. Will return with more photos.

I was in Sacramento for just a night before flying back home so Frank Fat's was on my radar to check out. We sat at the bar and loved the space. Our bartender was very friendly and helpful explain the menu with his spot on recommendations as well! The chow mein was spot on and delicious! Also couldn't pass up the banana cream pie for dessert. Great flavors, impeccable service and awesome experience all around, will definitely be back!

Famous old Chinese restaurant in Sac. Lots of politicians and lawyers visited there, as I heard. Chinese food is regarded as a cheap, not-fancy one in the US but Frank Fat's is something different. Not only has typical american chinese such as orange chicken, honey walnut shrimp but also has their own signature dishes such as Frank Fat style fried chicken etc. Banana pie is quite popular too.

This has been a great experience. I'm embarrassed to say that I have never been to Frank Fat's. Because I have spent most my life in Sacramento. I have dined 🍽 at other Fat Family Restaurants. Tonight's dinner was everything I was hoping for and more. I came here with two items in mind, the Brandy Fried Chicken and the Banana 🍌 cream 😋 Pie 🥧. My wife ordered the Entree Emigrant Beef, which was very good. We also shared a wonderful appetizer ku kwok ,(beef & pork Dumpling) wrapped in a wonton wrapper and fried.😎 We were not disappointed, great service, great table service, hell I haven't had that good of service in this town in a long time. Thank you Heather, our server was great, and all the other staff that makes you feel welcome to the restaurant.

Love Fats, it was perfect for date night before a show at the Crest, the food was tasty. We had to sit at the bar to eat, but it was still a good meal....oh and banana cream pie....enough said!

Frank Fat's is FANTASTIC! We had a large group and the crew handled everything marvelously. We shared multiple appetizers and dishes and everyone agreed that each dish was delicious, all the plates were cleaned off! Great ambiance, great service and great food, definitely recommend!

Frank Fat’s is a historic Chinese cuisine restaurant; just down the street from the State Capitol building. In business for over 80 years! The food is amazing and really is an experience to be had. I ordered the Honey Glazed BBQ pork (my favorite in town) along with some vegetables. They have an excellent bar/ alcohol selection as well. P.S. Must try the banana cream pie Anthonyxibarrax

The food was delicious, I especially enjoyed the banana cream pie for dessert. The service was friendly and attentive and the atmosphere is busy and lively, so reservations help if it’s a weekend.

The restaurant is beautiful and has a great service. We selected the lunch specials during the beginning of Oct 2023. I loved the rice with chili oil, it was the best for me after the pork. I asked for sauces because I always need something spicy, and they were great too, specially their homemade oil chili sauce. My coworkers unfortunately didn’t know how to pick Chinese food and ordered something that was Ok. Chicken salad and Kung Pao chicken. They didn’t listened to my recommendations and did not liked their food. I will return again.

Try the honey walnut prawns gluten free, they use rice flour instead and........ Best thing I have ever had in my mouth! I should also mention that I moved here from Seattle over 10 years ago, and finally found a Chinese restaurant that I have returned to. Leave room for the pie! I usually have to take it home 😊 from my first visit, staff treated me and mine as family. More of an adult date vibe. Get a sitter, you'll be glad you did!

I ordered the Honey Walnut Prawns delivery and it was a wonderful dish! The prawns had a light coating, they were cooked to perfection, and they had an intensely flavorful sauce that was both sweet and salty. Best Chinese dish I've had in Sacramento.

I tried downtown restaurant week menu. It was the first time to visit here. I got mai tai fat which is a little sweet rum based drinks. It is so great. All of their staff are super nice and well trained. Server is knowledgeable and kind. Their plates are warm, so you can enjoy your hot food for a while. For appetizers we got spring rolls and pot stickers. Pot stickers looks like ordinary but when you bite, you can feel juicy and tender. For Entrees we got honey walnut prawns, saigon crispy chicken, garlic green beans, cauliflower with beef and shrimp fried rice. My favorite is honey walnut prawns. It’s enough shrimp for 2 people and it goes well with their toasted walnut. Saigon crispy chicken was a little salty but when you have it with the veggies or rice, it’s good. Garlic green beans are perfectly cooked. It’s not too soggy. Cauliflower with beef use tender soft beef which goes well with crunchy vegetables. Last dessert was banana cream pie. I love their pastry part of this! They used raw banana that are not sugared. It feels pretty fresh and different. Willing to visit again as a group since they have enough space for people too.

I had the short ribs in curry sauce, and I must say that it was one of the best tasting Chinese dishes I've ever had. The meat was so tender and the flavor was phenomenal! My friend had the burgundy fried chicken. It wasn't quite as impressive, but it was still good. I loved the atmosphere. We didn't have reservations, but we were early enough to where they could get us a table. Our spring rolls appetizer came right away, but the main courses took a while. Overall, excellent.

I loved the food and the service but it was too cold inside the restaurant and it does not have a parking area for the customers. And the worse, they don’t serve “egg drop soup”, outrageous! But overall I definitely recommend to try it, food is good.

Then for the main course we ordered Honey Walnut Shrimp, Singapore Noodles, NY Strip with onions, and Firecracker Beef. We came in for their Restaurant Week prix fixe and had a great experience. The atmosphere is great, the food is amazing, and everything we tried was delicious. We even brought our 1-year-old daughter, and she loved it too, which says a lot. Classic spot with a fun vibe, generous portions, and consistently great dishes. Solid value for the quality and amount of food. Definitely a place we’ll be coming back to.

The food is exceptional, by any metric. The staff is top-tier. I've never seen the place with open tables, so make a reservation or be prepared to wait. And although it's packed elbow to elbow inside, it's a nice atmosphere and absolutely worth it. Don't leave Sacramento without eating at Frank Fats.

First opened since 1939, Frank Fat’s is the oldest restaurant to be owned exclusively by one family. I’ve met them and they are lovely. It is the only place where I will eat Chinese food because of consistency, quality ingredients, delicious and authentic dishes. There is not one dish in their menu that I haven’t tried and love. My go to is the chili 🌶️ beef chow fun and honey walnut prawns 🍤 and for their amazing 🍹 adult beverages!! Make sure you make room for dessert for their famous banana cream pie. I absolutely love this place 🫶🏼

It was a busy night but they made room for us at the bar. Food was very delicious. People were so friendly. The owner introduced himself to us and since we were from Louisiana and it was our first time there, he treated us to a slice of his famous banana cream pie. We had the stew and flank steak. The stew meat was so tender and the flavor of the marinated flank steak was delicious.

I ate here for lunch with a group of 16 people and we had the upstairs to ourselves. The food was delicious. Everyone was talking about the giant portion sizes from when they were there last year, but the portion sizes were the same as any Chinese restaurant. Definitely not something you'd split. Four dishes for the eight people at our table was not really enough. Other than that, the food was good and there is a wide variety on the menu. There was a bit too much oil for my liking, but I did forget to ask for them to go easy on it (which is harder to do with a group anyways). The service was good and the atmosphere of the room and restaurant was enjoyable. Would recommend, just don't expect there to be giant portions (at least at lunch). The location is an easy walk from the Convention Center, the Golden 1 Center, and the Capitol.

There's some valet parking right next door for a cheaper validated fee ($7). Inside the seating is mostly booths so you'll probably get good privacy if you want. So the food was pretty good but it does feel not very authentic Asian though I think they aren't supposed to be fully authentic Chinese dishes or anything. The service was excellent though. Our server Luis was real friendly and attentive. Food came out quick, table was cleared out efficiently, food was explained, etc. I'd come back here to explore their other signature items. Have fun!

Having moved from Sacramento 18 years ago, it had been too long since dining at Frank Fat’s. Impeccable service started with the hostesses at the front door and continued at our booth in the back. With many savory appetizers to start, my family made the wise choice to order with the Combination Platter - four servings of several of the best appetizers. Entrees are served family style allowing everyone at the table to enjoy each dish that is ordered. My favorite was the Honey Walnut Prawns, perfectly cooked prawns with a nice crunch. The Hunan Chicken Chow Mein with crunchy noodles was a table favorite, as was the Mixed Vegetables Chicken. Our server was Luis who provided attentive table service throughout our delightful meal.

Walking in without a reservation on what was clearly a bustling evening, I was worried we might be turned away, but the staff couldn't have been more welcoming and gracious in accommodating us. Delicious lunch! We ordered multiple different items, honey walnut prawns, pork potstickers, Sang Gai Shee Chow Mein, vegetable shao bao, pork fried rice and of course the famous banana cream pie. The food was hot and fresh. The timing of service was perfect from appetizers to main courses and dessert. Servers were excellent and attentive. We really enjoyed our conversation with the manager, Ken as we were celebrating a birthday with a first time guest, his sharing the history of the restaurant and memorable guest who have visited really made the lunch memorable.

Frank Fat’s came highly recommended and I didn’t think I’d be able to go because they are closed Monday and Tuesday but made a detour on Wednesday just for dinner here. Ngoc was an excellent server with great recommendations! I got the Yu Kwok (special beef and pork dumplings) as an appetizer, Chili Beef Chow Fun as the main course, and of course a slice of their famous banana cream pie for dessert. The manager and all the staff were great. I can see why it’s a staple in Sacramento!!

I would have liked to have the Honey walnut shrimp and Chow mein, but it would have been 2 separate orders. Half plates for lunch to combine would have been great. The original! Delicious Chinese food in downtown Sacramento, in an old-school setting reminiscent of 1950's high-end restaurants. Menu a little less varied than the Fat's Asia Bistro in Folsom (at least for lunch), but the food is just as good. An absolute must for those seeking an authentic taste of Sacramento!

This place you can tell is a staple on the city. Great Chinese food, beautiful ambiance and the service is next level. They went above and beyond to make sure our party of 9 was taken care of, never an empty glass on the table.

I decided to venture out and try some dishes I haven't usually had at Chinese restaurants. For what we paid the dishes were alright. The spicy dishes are pretty spicy, and I feel like I have a higher than average tolerance, but that made it hard to enjoy the dish. I feel like it is worth coming back, I may not have got the best things that day.

8/2022: Great service at the bar but not the cleanest bar on a Wednesday night. The bars brass bar needs some TLC. Came in for one a small bite/appetizer, Yu Kwok, and had to order more. Delicious! In 2019 Fat’s received Michelin’s Bib Gourmand in CA. The honey walnut prawns were up next and I was taken to flavor town. But wait! You can’t leave without trying the banana cream pie. It is yummy. Fat Cat’s vs. Chef Volas, in Atlantic City, Banana Cream Pie would be one hell of a battle. Chef Volas for the win though. Enjoy & Cheers!

Chinese food...with an uncommon twist. Service was fast and friendly, not just at meal order taking, but with the same attention on entry, on leaving, and through out the meal. Atmosphere was TRENDY for such a historical place. The food was tasty, and MUST HAVE Banana Cream Pie!! All at a very affordable price. Valet parking right next door, even with arena events $10.

Food was decent, fresh veggies, some of my chicken was cold-ish. Service was average, the hostess was very nice, the server seemed irritated at first and then seemed to get better. The place looks really nice, everytbing was clean. Very colorful. Parking was a pain, we called and asked about parking and they said the place next door works with them and they validate for it. And when we pulled in the guy told us they didnt, and he seemed irritated that I even wanted to park and had to think about how much it was. It just seemed like we were more of an inconvenience than a patron at both places.

Entering Frank Fat's, an eatery steeped in Sacramento history since 1938, felt like stepping into a cozy time capsule. We popped in on a Friday afternoon, just in time for their lunch special, which runs till 3 pm Tuesday through Friday. Let me tell you about Teddy, our super friendly server. He made our visit extra special with his awesome service. He brought us all sorts of goodies like fortune cookies, mints, and even walked us out when we left. Plus, he surprised us with a free slice of banana pie, which was yum! The food was mostly good. We tried the Mongolian beef and the soup of the day, which was a sweet and sour chicken soup. They were okay. But the kung pao chicken and chicken salad were really tasty. What stood out the most, though, was the amazing service from Teddy and the rest of the staff. Even though the food wasn't perfect, we're excited to come back and try more dishes. And let me tell you, the restaurant's interior was so cool! The bar area looked really fancy. Overall, we give Frank Fat's 4 out of 5 stars. The food was hit or miss, but the friendly service, cozy vibe, and cool decor make it worth coming back for more delicious adventures. Food is always delicious. We did have quite a long wait for hour food. People who ordered after us got there food before us. They were busy but, service at the bar was pretty slow. The tasting menu is great value. You get a lot of food for the price.

It has been ages since the last time I dined at Frank Fats. It was time to give them some local support. We started off with calamari. It was lightly battered and very crispy with a hint of heat. It was four of us, so it makes sense to order 4-5 dishes to share family style. Garlic Chili Green Beans and Walnut shrimp is a must! It's their signature dishes. Green beans were cooked perfectly with the crunch. Good sauce ratio! The Fat's Brandy fried chicken was flavorful and moist. Some of the pieces was overly fried tho. The Immigrant's beef was okay. I'm not a big beef person. The Hong Kong Chow Mein was okay. Generous portion. I expected the noodles on the bottom to be more crunchy. Overall, it was a nice family meal. You can't leave without enjoying a piece of their legendary banana cream pie. I don't know how they get it so fluffy.

Long and narrow inside. Very nice staff, and good menu. Bar is well stocked. The food is good but not crazy or Asian fusion. Sampled multiple appetizers and entrees as well as my favorite sidecar drink. Was filled but did not feel anything special food taste wise. I say check it out.

A little too pricey for the food quality. The fried calamari wasn’t good at all, very oily and whatever flour it was coated with, wasn’t good. Orange chicken and vegetable noodles were okay, big portion but tasted just like any fast food orange chicken, chicken wasn’t the best quality either. Our server was very nice and it was a quiet place with a relaxing atmosphere.

We actually order tonight through UberEats and our our food was so underwhelming tonight. We’ve had the Orange Chicken multiple times previously with generous portions, but tonight the container wasn’t even half full. For $25.00, this is so disappointing on many levels. Also as a side note, there was more dough than chicken.

I came here for dinner on a Thursday at 6 PM. With a colleague. It was empty -ish but by the time we left at 8pm it was packed. I got the sampler appetizer with egg rolls, dumplings, yu kwok their specialty and chicken. My least favorite was yu kwok. The dumplings and salt and pepper chicken were good and the eggrolls were OK. The banana pie was really good. My colleague got the half peking duck buns and he said it was OK. I know this place is very popular but I wouldn’t say it’s the best Chinese food I’ve had.

I wanted dishes with vegetables with mung beans in it. But , instead they only had noodles. I said I had celiac Disease and Im a Diabetic. I can not eat wheat. They said their noodles wasn't wheat but rice. It was disappointing to me. I won't be returning. I spent close to $40.00 and couldn't even eat but a tiny amount which made me sick.

I decided to visit this place because of its many great reviews and long history. The beautiful interior and friendly service left a strong impression. I happened to be there during lunch hours and ordered from the lunch menu. The flavors weren’t exactly traditional Chinese, but more like what you’d expect from an American-style Chinese restaurant. Overall, it was an impressive place and worth a visit.

I had really high expectations going in with the Bib Gourmand and high Google reviews. Everything tasted fine; good, even… but just not what I expected. The food, to me, tasted a little too Americanized. The banana cream pie, though, was really good. I’d come back just for the pie.

This is going to be a mixed review. Pros: Frank Fat's was the most accommodating restaurant for our group size of 22 people. Making a reservation was easy, and we were given access to the full menu instead of a prix-fixe menu given our group size. We ordered on the day of our dinner instead of ordering ahead, and they were totally fine with that. We were seated right away, and the service was great. All their dishes are family style, so we got to share and try a bunch of different food items. Finding parking was easy. Cons: Food wasn't as good as we expected. Peking duck was mediocre. Baby back ribs were dry and hard to cut through. One of the chicken dishes was also undercooked.

I took my mother and she had a better experience than I did. It was the meats. They overcooked my Saigon crispy chicken to a degree I didn't know possible without it being visually evident. It looked great. The sauce was good. No exaggeration I had to stop eating because it was so chewy. my jaws and temples were worn out and aching. the exact consistency of beef jerky. I also had pot stickers and the meat mixture was too dry to eat more than half of one. Just being honest here. My mom said hers was fine but, my experience with the food wasn't enjoyable where were no other problems but the purpose of going to a restaurant is for the food so, I have to give 2 stars even though it makes me feel a little bad.

I have never been so disappointed in a meal in a long time. I have heard of this place for 20 years and the anniversary menu of their "best" plates had me booking a reservation and looking forward to it for weeks. The reality? Everything was greasy from the appetizers to the rice. The chicken dish was flavorless and congealed with a terrible texture. The famous honey walnut prawns were just okay. The renowned banana creme pie was underwhelming and probably made worse because we were so ready to leave. Lastly the drink menu cocktails reminds me of something out of a 1990 Applebee's menu. In fact that sums up it all, a place stuck in the past when we thought mediocre Chinese food was fantastic when we know better now.

Meh. Been waiting a while for a good night to come to this place. Parking is the first bummer, the valet messed with the drivers seat settings and left the window down while we ate and told my lady to go inside while the man pays, which got me fired up, nobody tells my lady what to do, she’s a kind, grown woman and deserves to be spoken to respectfully. Then upon entry the vibe is just terrible, but we were famished so we decided to move forward and eat. The paint on the walls is not old and quaint, it’s like being in someone’s weird sex dungeon in the 80’s. The carpet is disgusting and it feels like you are in a casino on a cruise ship. The staff is really nice but they all look like they should have retired 10 years ago. Not one Asian person to be found which should have been my first red flag, and I am including the customers inside the restaurant. The place was packed so we assumed the food must be THAT good. It wasn’t. We ordered 4 or 5 plates thinking we’d take home leftovers. Half the stuff was cold when it arrived. Not one thing had any sauce on it. Let me be clear: tossed in sauces, but not one bite had an extra drop so be prepared for dry rice and dry meat. The drinks are on the high priced side, they were mediocre and the garnishes were pretty boring. Nobody wants those gross neon red fake maraschino cherries. A real maraschino cherry is deep purple like a luxardo. I would recommend finding another spot like Yang Kee in Davis if you want a real culinary experience. You can watch their staff cook from your table and it’s clean. I gave an extra star for the bathroom which had stalls that go floor to ceiling. Classiest part of the entire experience. If you choose to eat here I recommend getting a table, the bar has this oversized brass tubing along the edge and it keeps you 12 inches from your plate…but it’s round so you can’t set anything on it and it was sticky when we were sat. The host should be doing a final look over of the cleanliness when seating. Edit: I forgot to mention when I asked about the sticky bar I was handed a wet towel by the bartender to clean the last customers mess myself. I still left a 20% tip but it’s very unlikely we will be back or mention this place to friends.

My boyfriend and I did the Dine Downtown Prix Fixe menu, $45 per person and about $100 total. The food was cold and disappointing. The banana cream pie was actually good, but many entrees were not done with care, and the appetizers were okay. Go somewhere else! Panda express mogs.

Pretty cool interior. I only wish the food was equally good. Brandy fried chicken had a great texture but no flavor, just greasy. Green beans were actually good with a black bean sauce. The banana cream pie was a huge letdown too. It was bananas with whipped cream on top. The custard or pudding that usually goes at the bottom was just not there. More bland than a Safeway pie. I couldn't believe this dessert was famous. For the prices we paid, I can't justify it.

I would compare this to over priced Panda Express but that would be an insult to Panda Express. Food was gross, not prepared well. The chow mein for example was both crunchy and soggy.

We went for happy hour. The ambiance is pretty nice. However, the food was tasteless and was likely frozen. The salt and pepper chicken was extremely greasy and the yu krok had a good filling, but the shell was gross and again, tasted frozen. The margaritas were good. We also ordered Mongolian beef to go, and I could have gotten something better at Panda Express.
