I randomly stumbled upon this restaurant, and it turned out to be amazing! The food was delicious, the prices were super reasonable, and the atmosphere was really nice. Honestly, this is some of the best soul food I’ve had in San Antonio. I’m surprised they don’t have more publicity because they’re definitely better than most of the other soul food spots in the city. It’s rare to find quality soul food like this — they just need better marketing. I’ll definitely be coming back!

This was my first time here, and let me just say… I was completely blown away!!! I had the Shrimp and Grits and they were so buttery and creamy, an explosion of great flavor in my mouth, and my partner had the meatloaf and I got to taste that as well with the Mac and cheese, rice and beans & corn bread and we couldn’t stop expressing how good it was every time we went in for a bite ❤️❤️❤️ The soul food was out of this world! Every bite tasted like it was made with love and tradition. It was rich, flavorful, and so comforting, like a warm hug from the inside out. I was so excited to eat that I didn’t even think to take a picture before I devoured everything on my plate — and I have zero regrets! The staff made the experience even better. They were beyond friendly — so welcoming, warm, and attentive. You could tell they truly care about their food and their guests. It felt like I was eating at a family member’s house, not just a restaurant. This place has officially earned a spot in my heart. I’ll definitely be back!

I just had the best chicken fried steak I have ever eaten! That is a big deal since my father came from the south and I had never had any as good as his. Well, now I have! The spicy shrimp and grits and sweet potato pie were also great. Definitely go here.

J's Eatery was amazing. I had the best greens of my life, the best sauteed spinach of my life (how did she even do that?!), mac and cheese that was up there with the best... My husband had the smoked meatloaf, which he loved, and some fantastic banana pudding. He joked that he wasn't going to share with me and so the owner brought me my own little cookie. Thanks, J! Wonderful place. She's adding all day breakfast and other new dishes soon. This is one to watch; I only wish it was closer to where we live!

Y'all do NOT sleep on this place. It was absolutely phenomenal. I wish I would have gotten the before picture of our plates, but I did include pictures of the after. The first is our plates which as you can see were cleared. The second is of the desserts we had to order ( say YES to the lemon pound cake). We go to SA all the time but had never been here before and wish we had because we have been missing out. The service was so kind. They sat and talked with us for a while. Food was hot and served quickly. I had the chicken fried steak, and my husband had the smoked meatloaf. We also had a sample of the ox tail and I'd order that as a meal next time it was really good. Corn bread was incredible. Check this place out!

The visit here was an experience. We love the honesty of Mrs. Judy. My fiance wanted oxtails and they were not tender at that time. She personally came out to talk to us to let us know. By the time we finished talking they were good to go. I don't eat oxtail but I tasted his and OMG. DELICIOUS. The food was so good and a lot of it. The desserts were delicious as well. This is our new go to spot. If you haven't tried it out, you should!!!!

We came upon this place, and I am so lucky we did. You walk in and you see mini lights hanging from the ceiling. We were approached by the owner Bryan, and he welcomed us as if we were entering his home. According to Bryan, “ This is not soul food , bc everyone has their own soul, this is home cooking.” The food was absolutely AMAZING!! We ordered the smoked meatloaf it was over the top! Nothing I have ever tasted before. We ordered the smothered chicken, red bean and rice, macaroni, garlic mashed potato, sauté spinach, Al La cart fried catfish. And corn bread. Every bite we took we shook our head. This our place to go for home cooking. Food is to die for!!!!

Very delicious food! I had the fall off the bone oxtails! I meannnn. Delicious. I would call ahead to make sure they have them the day you’re going to get them. I also had the greens and the yams. Everything was literally the BEST! Don’t forget to try the pineapple lemonade. And shout out to Mr. J and his wife. They were so kind and welcoming. The spot had a home vibe with great music and lights. It was chill and not too loud. I’m adding this to my faves.

I ordered shrimp and grits, garlic mashed potatoes, cornbread, and meatloaf, and let me tell you—EVERY BITE WAS PURE COMFORT & FLAVOR!!! The shrimp and grits were absolutely perfect—creamy, well-seasoned, and so satisfying that after just five bites, I was ready for a nap. The garlic mashed potatoes were smooth, buttery, and packed with just the right amount of garlic to make them irresistible. Then came the cornbread—moist, slightly sweet, and baked to golden perfection. It tasted like something straight out of a home-cooked Sunday dinner. And the meatloaf? Tender, flavorful, and covered in a sauce that tied everything together beautifully. For my first time ordering from J’s Eatery, they made a lasting impression. The food was delicious, the portions were generous, and the flavors spoke for themselves. This definitely won’t be my last visit! 💕🤤.

We ordered our food to go but we then decided to sit down to eat.. they have very good prices and their food is SOO GOOD !! There is an explosion of flavor in every bite so yummy ! 🥰all of the food everything tasted amazing including the pineapple lemonade. We ordered the chicken and waffles, and the catfish with 2 sides it also included the cornbread. They have perfect portion sizes and not only is their food great but their customer service is amazing we feel very welcomed and everyone there was very nice welcoming and attentive and making sure we had everything we need for a good dining experience, the restaurant is also very clean and decorated beautifully…this is one of the best places we have been and we will definitely be back again thank you it was delicious !!!

Great place to eat some delicious soul food! I had the best tasting chicken fried steak I’ve had in years and the brown gravy was good too! We also ordered lemon pepper and buffalo wings, they were a good size and flavorful. There was a little bit of a wait, but it was well worth it for hot, fresh food. The owner also greeted us and was welcoming. Can’t wait to come back again!

Ordered chicken fried chicken to go and it was delicious! Every bite was full of flavor. Macaroni was some of the best I’ve had. Chicken was perfectly crispy and the potatoes were so good! And the cornbread was 10/10. Perfectly moist. Will definitely be coming back and bringing my family.

Our first time there and we enjoyed it! The shrimp and grits were delicious. The catfish was fantastic. The plate came with cream corn had a great flavor and consistency. The Mac and cheese was good. The cornbread was over the top!! We finished the meal and took dessert home. We had a side of banana pudding and cobbler cake. Those desserts made the night! The whole experience was great. They have a small dance floor and DJ setup when we went. It was on a Sunday for dinner. Very nice atmosphere set up in hot pink and black with rope lights hanging in the ceiling. The entire staff was friendly and welcoming! We will definitely be making this a regular dinner place! 🍻

The oxtail bowl was tasty, but the meat was limited. Finally, their banana pudding is on par with any in town. Will be back again soon, and if the rest of the menu tastes as good as the sample, I will update 👍.
