My favorite sandwich shop in the Bay Area which I’ve been coming to for the past 6 years. I always get the spicy turkey sandwich with spicy mustard. The sourdough is always perfectly cooked and baked fresh daily, and the meat quality and flavor is so good. Even though I now live 35mins away, I still occasionally make the drive just to get a sandwich here. They also take credit card now which is really convenient. I’m hoping they open on the weekends or extend their hours more.
This is one of my favorite sandwich restaurants. It’s where we go when we are craving a really good sandwich with sourdough bread. So, I am personally a risk-averse person. When I find a meal I like at a restaurant, I basically will order the same meal for years. I have a favorite meal at California Sourdough. It’s the tuna sandwiches that I first tried because I am Catholic and can’t have meat on Lenten Fridays. The tuna sandwich is fabulous. You should try it. Even though I already have a favorite dish, I am going out of my way not to eat it in order to try everything else on the menu, because I do not want to miss out on my next favorite sandwich. I strongly encourage you to not just come to California Sourdough but to experiment with the various sandwiches here as well.
One of the best sandwiches I’ve had in a while I l Love me a number 9 turkey ham and cheese with the warm bread. just great and 15$ a sandwich not bad either
Great sandwich spot, bread is so fresh. Amazing and friendly staff and atmosphere. Used to be cash only and now they take card, definitely a plus. The new owner is super friendly and very personable. Highly recommend it.
One of the best sandwich places I’ve been to. The service is fast and they’re always friendly! My favorite is the pastrami. Bring your appetite because the portions are large!
Honesty one of the best turkey sandwiches I’ve ever had! The bread is AMAZING
It's a sandwich shop. The BEST sandwich shop! What makes it the BEST is the sourdough hoagie bun. Crisp on the outside, very soft on the inside. Fresh lettuce, tomato & thin sliced Boar's Head meat. Anytime I am traveling through San Jose, and the shop is open, I go out of my way to pick up a sandwich.
My go-to order at California Sourdough is the turkey and pepperoni sandwich. The bread is obviously the star (that signature sourdough 🤤), but the way they stack it with just the right amount of meat and toppings makes it absolutely crave-worthy. The sandwiches are $15 now, but they’re huge and totally worth it—I always get a side of chips and two meals out of one. Bonus points for the staff too—always super friendly, quick, and welcoming. You can tell they care about what they’re serving and the people they’re serving it to. If you haven’t tried it yet… go hungry and thank me later!
This spot is only open a couple of hours a day and is cash only but everyone that goes here seems to know that so they’re always prepared. If you aren’t there’s an atm machine for you. The bread is baked in house so it comes out hot and they use boarshead meats so you know it’s quality. I ordered a classic and got it within minutes. The place is a well oiled machine that’s tucked away in a corner. I’ve been going to the coffee shop next door for years but never thought an awesome sandwich place was within feet of me. For sure I’ll be back.
Amazing! Next to the big plaza with all the chain restaurants is this hidden gem. The bread is fresh out of the oven and sooo good. I had a Reuben, that was perfect. Hesitate to post a review to keep the lines from growing … but the team deserves the crowd.
#15. Mortadella Solid sandwich spot. Quality ingredients across the board makes it hard to not like. Crunch and chew on sour dough makes you realize how freshly baked the bread is. Recommend the spicy mustard. Also the staff is very friendly.
Great local shop that makes house baked sourdough. The new owners are very kind and friendly and they've kept all the recipes the same as before. They also accept credit card and are open on Saturdays now which is a huge Plus.
Every time I come to sj I always!!!!!!! Have to come here because it’s that good

Deli Style walk up and order. Cash only and limited hours. Only open part time. Absolutely must try if you like sandwiches on fresh Sourdough bread. Incredible quality ingredients and super fast service. Indoor and outdoor seating.

Parking: Ample parking. If you want to be closer to the entrance, park closer to Oakland road because the entrance is on that side of the building on the first floor. Service: The staff is friendly and efficient. Location: Indoor and outdoor seating. Both were clean and well kept. Food: I ordered the pastrami with regular mustard and no red onions. The sourdough bread was the perfect level of crispiness outside and chewiness inside. The pastrami was also very flavorful but not overwhelming. The portion was filling (I ate half for lunch and was full. Eating the whole thing will definitely fill anyone's stomach). The price was reasonable for the quality and portion (my friend paid but I think it was around $16). Definitely will be going back to try their other sandwiches.
Sourdough has been a long time favorite because their bread is absolutely incredible and their sandwiches are so good. New ownership took over and they are wonderful. Wonderful people and equally wonderful sandwiches. Hands-down, my favorite sandwich place to go to
Wow. One size. Swiss cheese included. What's that sauce? I'm an old school Italian deli guy...since my high school days. Back when the bread was everything. There aren't many of them around anymore. Sadly I've had to lower my standards over the years as they go out of business. But this place rocked my world. It's been 2 days and I'm still thinking about it. The crunch through the fresh warm sourdough, the tender roast beef, the hint of swiss cheese and that sauce. The only problem I had was steering with one hand while savoring each bite. Bravo! CSE...i think...i love you.
May, the owner, is absolutely wonderful — always welcoming and truly cares about her customers. We've been coming to this place for years, and they consistently have the best sandwiches in town. Highly recommended!
Hands down the BEST sandwich you can get in the south bay, maybe the entire Bay Area. You just can't beat the daily fresh baked sourdough and wide selection of meats. Usually quick too and the staff is super nice. Only go here if you're prepared to be overwhelmed with flavor and texture and eat a larger lunch than you thought your money would get you!
I’ve been a customer since 2000 when my company was located nearby. I’ve never had anything other than #22 with spicy mustard. The star is their sourdough bread which I think is the best in town. The new owner took it up a notch. They now take electric payments and credit cards. Their ordering system is much more efficient and organized. They have also beautified the dining area (it looked half storage and half dining room before). The only thing left is to add weekend service (maybe just Saturday, please). With my current job, I can’t really stop by for lunch anymore. But I still go by on my days off and will for the rest of my life. By the way, I’ve met people in line who had been customers for even longer.
One of my favorite lunch spots, definitely my favorite sandwich spot! Mortadella is my go-to, and it’s delicious every time :)
Awesome pastrami on fresh, soft bread. Super flavorful, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. DEFINITELY coming back.

After 2025 owner changed, the flavor are changed too, it’s still has good sandwiches but not as good as it before. The sourdough is more like Vietnam flavor now. Before 2025, The store has the best sandwich in town, however they are cash only business, I wish one day it will accept credit card, debit card or Venmo in the future.
Honestly, this is my go-to sandwich spot in San Jose. I've been coming here for years, even after the change in ownership and the quality has stayed solid. They finally accept cards now, which is a huge plus. The sandwiches are simple, but the real standout is their Sourdough bread. It's fresh, flavorful, and what makes everything hit. Portions are generous too. I usually go with a sandwich paired with either the mac or potato salad, and it never disappoints. You really can't go wrong with any of their sandwiches. Definitely recommend.
Good bread, but anemic portions of meat. A pastrami sandwich should have you struggling to get your mouth around it. I could have eaten all of the meat in about 2 bites....not great for $18
