Jim's Austin Reviews
Everything was perfect from the service to the food. I lived in San Antonio for 60 years where there were so many Jim’s. To find one in Austin was so awesome. Felt like home.
Little more expensive than I wanted, but nice and comfortable as always
We love Jims Restaurant. Our waitress Angelique is the best. She is so sincere and takes really good care of us. The manager Mariah also takes the time to ensure we are being take care of. She does a great job of managing the Restaurant and her staff. The food tastes great and we are never disappointed. We will continue to come eat at Jim's. Some restaurants stand out and Jim' s is one of them!! It's good to come to an establishment that cares about you!!
The food here is VERY good. I have only every had there breakfast and its always amazing so I can only assume the rest of there food is good as well. I go about once a month(I rarely eat out honestly) but everytime it is good.
Do yourself a favor. Go there in the morning and get some breakfast tacos. Great deal and they're huge
Food was awesome. Service was very good waitress was very kind and sweet. Love the retro look of the restaurant reminds me of eating at a diner back in the day. It’s always awesome to relive the old times.
My boyfriend and i have been here several times and we always leave very satisfied. The service is always very prompt and friendly, the food is good and the prices are very reasonable. Shout out to Nancy the hostess. :)
There's not too many diners left out there so do yourself a favor and check out this gem. Friendly service and good food makes this place a regular for me. The only minor issue I had was the brown gravy was very salty the last trip. I hope it's not regularly that salty because I prefer brown gravy on my mashed potatoes and white gravy on my chicken fried steak. I still love the place.
I loved this place when we visited Austin. Gave me alot of nostalgia for the diners I frequented with my parents growing up. Their breakfast was great and the waitresses were very nice. Will definitely be back!
Great food, comfort food, great pie and cake, friendly service..
Jim's is my go-to spot for breakfast anytime if the day. My wife and I have been coming here for thirty years or so and in that time I've only had two meals that didn't meet their consistent high standards of hot fresh food for a price that defies the high costs of everything in our current economy. I love their two pork chop breakfast with eggs, hash browns, and toast. The chops have that wonderful flame grilled flavor. They provide good quality food, friendly service in an old time diner atmosphere at affordable prices. For this retiree Jim's is a haven in these difficult times.
Always a great, diner-style breakfast.
I absolutely love Jim's. The service is fast and efficient The waitresses are always there to fill up your coffee cup and to take your order quickly. Food typically comes out in about half the time you would expect it to so you know it's hot and fresh. It's always impressive how fast they get it out. This is an old style diner so little bit of a throwback to what you're used to getting with all the new yuppie restaurants in Austin. This place has stood the test of time and there's many locations all over Austin and San Antonio. The menu is your typical diner / American food. I prefer the chicken fried steak or the catfish plate. The coffee is always hot and rather strong all day and night. The breakfast menu is definitely up to par and they know how to take care of business. You can get in and out of here in about 20 minutes if you're in a hurry and it's the same bacon and eggs that you're going to get any higher in end joint in South Austin for half the price. I love how easy the parking is and anytime I'm in the area I can't help but stop in to Jim's.
Friendly employees. Food is always fresh and hot.Good coffee. Family oriented. Love the atmosphere. Hope Jim's stays open forever... I use to eat at Jim's growing up when it was on Ben White with my parents. Jim's has history ❤️
This Jim's is Chonk's favorite Jim's. They always slop extra gravy on Chonk's Pioneer Breakfast.
No frills, local, old-school diner with basic comfort food and all day breakfast at very reasonable prices. The place is outdated and could use some updating, which is exactly the charm of it. Diner food, nothing special but exactly what you’re in the mood for. My kids ate every bite of the silver dollar pancakes and bacon breakfast. And I was happy with my chili burger with onion rings. Jim’s won’t impress anyone but it satisfies every time. That’s worth five stars.
Amazing chicken fried steak, perfectly cooked eggs over easy barely runny and jammy, perfect hashbrowns
Hasn't changed in 40 years. Great spot for a good breakfast to start the recovery.
After my grandson and I were finished flying our dji Mavic Mini drone, we wanted to grab an early diner. Jim's diner was the perfect spot for us. Jim's has real diner feel with lots of booths for privacy. And like a real diner, they serve breakfast all day. I had the senior omelette, which was plenty for me. My grandson had the breakfast sandwich, which he raved about. The bread was grilled like a grilled cheese sandwich. I'll try that next time. Jim's is our new go-to restaurant.
We've been going to Jim's at the Y in Oak Hill for 30 years. It's a great place for an old fashioned breakfast. It is typical breakfast food like eggs, bacon or sausage, hash browns and pancakes galore. Add in a bottomless coffee cup and you've got a great breakfast restaurant.
I recently visited Jim’s Restaurants for breakfast and decided to sit at the bar for the first time, and I have to say, it was a great decision. Sitting at the bar allowed me to get immediate attention, and my food was served right away, which I really appreciated. Being a pescatarian, I was a little disappointed when my dish arrived with meat in it. However, my server was incredibly accommodating, quickly taking it back and getting a new dish fired up in no time. The food was delicious, and one thing you can count on at Jim’s is consistency. The standard of food here is always top-notch, and the staff is both friendly and attentive, despite being very busy. If you have a chance to sit at the bar, I highly recommend it. It’s a great way to avoid the long wait times for a table, which I’ve heard can sometimes take a while. Overall, Jim’s is a solid choice for a tasty and reliable meal.
GREAT FOOD. WENT WITH FRIENDS WE ALL BOUGHT SEVERELY DIFFERENT ITEMS AND ALL OF THEM WERE PLATE LICKING DELICIOUSNESS. I ORDERED A RIBEYE AND IT WAS JUST SO FLAVORFUL AND MADE AMAZINGLY. GREAT WAITRESS TOO AND ATMOSPHERE.
Great service. Good food!
Had a great little lunch at the counter. Service was fantastic. Engelique was the perfect level of service, on top of what I needed while giving me space to simply enjoy. Saw she was running a decent portion of floor too as seemed like they were in a shift change. Thanks for the wonderful meal.
Classic American dinner/truck stop food with consistently good breakfast especially the country fried steak. Just know what you are getting into. This place looks like it rolled out of the 70s and has what you would expect from a upscaled waffle house. Good eggs and bacon and solid coffee. Several pie options and solid service. When your tired a fancy breakfast tacos and local Austin spots this is where you go.
Carlos is wonderful, such great customer service and work ethic!
Great customer service n great food.
I thought this place was old school and kind of gross as a teenager 30 years ago. I was SHOCKED to see it's still standing and I suppose out of nostalgia I felt like I had to stop in. I have to say, it was much, much better than I remembered. Yes, it is an old fashioned diner and definitely not the place to go if you want to eat healthy, but the quality of the food was exceptional and I would even call it memorable. The service was great too. And even though it's pretty much a relic, the interior was noticeably and immaculately clean. This diner will always have a spot in my heart.
Always grapefruit a little overpriced on the drinks but food hasn't changed in years
Great food, totally worth the price. Got the chicken fried steak, it was thick and tender. Wonderful service and all over beyond my expectations. Will be going back for more
I am so glad I tried Jim’s! I got the chicken fried steak with two sides and it was huge for $13! My wife got the fried shrimp and there were 8 gigantic shrimp! The chicken fried steak was hand breaded and delicious and the shrimp were cooked perfect. Service was fantastic and everyone was super friendly. We will definitely be back because the food was so delicious and my mind is blown by the prices!
Babs is a gem! Love this location. Great service, great food. Highly recommend!
Delicious food. The tilapia fish, coleslaw, and applesauce tasted great. So was their carrot cake!!!
Great service, the busser lady was such a hard worker, my server very nice, had beautiful orange nails and the host was beautiful I had to get a smile out of her, she asked if I want a copy of my receipt I said yeah only if you write your number on it. And I got the smile, keep it up yall!
I’ve been going here since I was a child. Still the sun atmosphere still the same good people, and especially still the same great food!
Comfortable Convenient Polite and friendly employees with a very relaxing atmosphere. ... And the food was very enjoyable.
Classic American diner fare. The chicken and waffles are super delicious and rather special. I've only ever come for breakfast but the food is always solid and the staff is always friendly. Be wary, however, it can get quite busy for breakfast on the weekends and depending on your party size, you could be waiting a bit for a table.
Esmee is an amazing server and I am so glad to know that she has been serving 26 years!! Hats off!! Texas Omellete is so good here alwaysss!!!
The food was delicious, even better than maybe other jim locations and our server Ashley was so friendly
What is the best breakfast in the state is right here at Jim's coffee shop! Chopped steak breakfast and pork chop breakfast are excellent I would ask without meat seasoning. Ask for your hash browns extra crispy and you will love it. Frontier Burger is unbelievably Juicy and Delicious along with their super skinny onion rings.
Excellent breakfast and waitress! The food was made perfect...I love extra crispy bacon and hash browns. The salsa was spicy enough for me! Haven't been to a Jim's in a long time, but I definitely plan on coming back! Thanks for the great experience! Started my day off RIGHT! IG: gmtvmodelVanessa
I've been coming here for 28yrs. I miss the old country style paintings on the wall. When they "updated" the inside it just doesn't hit the way the old style did. Either way this place rules. Ranch dressing is bomb. Dinner rolls are good. I love the chilled plates for the salads. Pies and cakes are good. I also miss how they were 24/7. We used to be there at 3am after a night on the town *sigh
I dealt with both Rae and Zach for my short dine-in and both were especially friendly, personable and professional! My local Jim’s is still my favorite breakfast all day restaurant hands-down. Better food and service than all the others.
This Jim's has a classic interior design that feels cozy and retro. We came here late one night an hour or two before close and felt like we were in a detective movie. We ordered the biscuits and gravy, eggs, hashbrowns, and a pancake. Along with the fried shrimp and a strawberry pie slice for desert. The food was good, but our favorite was definitely the strawberry cake.
This is a great spot for the classic diner experience. You are literally walking into something from like 1979. The food is usually excellent but not always, never inedible, just depends on who’s in the kitchen. The waiters and waitresses are totally nice and you might even swear you heard someone say “kiss my grits” in the back ground. They have a great classic diner counter as well, for the single folk to grab a quick lunch. The chicken fried steak is prepared in classic style and is very tasty. Also can’t forget to mention… This is the place to get breakfast in the South Austin area. There are a couple of downsides the biscuits are kind of dry - so I recommend the texas toast. And the place is currently a little difficult to access due to never-ending road construction at the Oak Hill “Y” intersection, so pack your patience trying to get to the parking lot. I promise it will be worth the effort.
This is my favorite place to eat breakfast! Great food, Great pricing, and Great service! I've been going here for years and never had a bad experience.
Excellent chicken fried steak. Delicious diner style breakfast and the lunch/dinner menu looks great. Waited less than 10 minutes on a Saturday morning at 9:00. Service was perfect.
On 25 September the PiHead group visited Jim's. This group visits restaurants throughout Central Texas searching for perfection in their pie menu. Today, at Jim's, they came close. They claim their Pies are made in house and we believe them. Our sampling of the Apple and Coconut Cream Pies proved to be excellent in flavor and texture. We wholeheartedly recommend you order a slice alone or after your meal. We would be wrong not to mention the excellent food and prices. The service was excellent, fast and friendly. We're putting this Jim's Restaurant in the Top Group of Restaurants you should visit.
This place has what we lost as a society. A place with free parking, a short wait time, and affordable dining. This is what comfort dining used to and SHOULD be. The options are no frills but satisfying. This is THEE PLACE you go to for your after Church fix. Whether it be a late breakfast, or good ol’ Cruisin’ Cuisine Americana served on a warm platter; Jim’s got you covered.
Late-Night Gold at the Bar. 5 Stars for Jim’s You know a place is solid when you roll up at 9:30pm and not only are they still serving, they’re actually happy to see you. That’s exactly what happened at Jim’s Restaurant, where we ended up grabbing a couple seats at the bar and had one of the best meals of the week. Kevin, our server, deserves his own plaque on the wall. Friendly, relaxed, and clearly a night-shift MVP. The kind of guy who checks in just the right amount and makes you feel like the barstools were saved just for you. We ordered the chicken fried steak, and let’s just say: if comfort food were an Olympic sport, Jim’s would be bringing home the gold. Crispy, perfectly seasoned, smothered in that dreamy gravy that makes you question your loyalty to any other dinner option. And because we like to live deliciously, we took home a full stack of pancakes (pro tip: they reheat like a dream) and a slice of coconut cream pie. Light, rich, and not too sweet — like a Hallmark movie but edible. Jim’s isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel — they just actually know how to make it roll. Great service, great food, and a vibe that makes you want to come back before you’ve even left. Michelin stars? Nah. Jim’s has Texas charm which is better in every way.
I just love going to Jim's Restaurant. Food is so good ; prices are so down to earth. I love seeing their primary customers, who generally are seniors . They have an extended menu for everybody and a senior menu but are not limited to great prices. My favorite dish from Jim's is Liver and Onions. For those who like "weird" stuff, I absolutely recommend this dish. Liver and onions it are not weird at all, but for some people, it is even disgusting . I just love it, and I will go back every time I can to get the same from the menu.
Except for the location which will be better when the road construction completed, everything is great at this place👍🏻
The food is decent, the atmosphere is good, the staff is friendly and the service is fast. I had breakfast for dinner... the omelets are pretty tasty. Their ranch dressing is delicious, so put it on your salad and/or dunk your fries in it! 😋😍
The restaurant was clean and fresh smelling. The wait staff was very pleasant. I had the Catfish Shrimp combo plate with spinach and fried okra sides. The seafood was cooked really well. Nice and crunchy breading. The price of our meal was less than I was expecting. I will definitely be back.
I was feeling fairly rough due to overindulgence the day before so I needed a stout breakfast in order to start all over again and Jim's was the perfect remedy. I ordered the chicken fried steak with hash browns and scramble eggs. It also came with two homemade biscuits. It was one of the best chicken fried breakfast steaks that I've had in a long time.
The food is decent diner-style. Scrambled eggs weren’t great. Not fluffy or anything. Overcooked. The pancakes were good. Hashbrowns were decent. My girlfriend said her biscuits and gravy meal wasn’t even hot though. Just barely warm. The waitress took our drink order, left, and didn’t come back to take the food order for a bit. Even took a table’s food order that came in after us, first. So the service wasn’t great. The place gets pretty busy though. We went on Saturday around noon. Just was sort of a let-down. There are better diners in Austin but…who knows, maybe you’ll have a better experience.
We visited Jim's as a group for a work outing. There was a good number of people around, even though it was the middle of the week! They had your standard American food faire, which is nice if that's what you're into. The fried chicken looked plentiful and crispy, and the french toast looked almost picture perfect. It was an enjoyable experience, but more for the familiar restaurant comforts and wonderful staff at this location than the quality of the food or ambience. The waitress was very friendly and split our bills- across quite a few people nonetheless!- and the checkout process at the counter was speedy and well managed. Thanks for the good outing Jim's!
The service was great, the food was better than Denny's and close to IHOP quality. The coffee was lukewarm and tea like. I'm sorry but this is a diner, coffee quality is paramount. Maybe it was a fluke but I'll be back to try again. If you eat here I hope your coffee is better than mine.
Loved the chicken fried pork chop breakfast, now it's gone. Just when you think you find a great go-to breakfast, they change the menu. The staff is great, the gravy is not - tastes like water and flour. Loved the grits and biscuits. Not going back til they bring the chicken fried pork chops back.
I was really looking forward to trying this place after reading some solid reviews. I was greeted quickly and the food came incredibly fast. Unfortunately, it was fast for a reason. All of the meat (bacon, sausage, ham) was very dried out and tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a long time. The hash browns were undercooked. Left very unsatisfied and disappointed. I would not recommend this place for breakfast.
I've been going to this location for 20+ years. We will not be back again. Our waitress was very sweet. But the food quality has gone way down and the prices have gone up. Cold food was the tipping point. Unfortunate that the quality went with the remodel.
So I called in an order for me and my mom's Sunday dinner to be picked up after work. He repeated the order back I thought everything was ok. I get there to pick up the order and you would've thought they never seen an African American person in their life. They stared and even pointed especially an elderly white woman. So I asked for my ordered he repeated it again. Of course it was high school kids playing around at the register. I gave him my card he said um do you have another card it's not taking this it says bad read and we can't type it in but said it so rudely. I asked how many times did you swipe he said 3-4 times and swiped it again really fast. I gave him another card which he snatched it went through he walked off and rudely said have a good day and went in the back. I leave get home and they got my order all wrong. I call back and speak to a manager I tell her what I ordered came with 2 pork chops she says well they rung u up for one would u like to come back for a piece of pie. I start to eat the pork chop it's not even cooked all the way through. It takes nothing to be a nice person and have good customer service. I usually don't even complain I get it customer service is hard I worked it but geez
We must have been in a "no fly" zone. No one noticed us waiting to be seated. Upon being seated, finally, we waited about 15 minutes to be waited on as we watched other people who came in after us order their food. We finally asked if any one was covering our table. HORRIBLE service. Restaurant was not crowded at all. No excuse!
I have been coming to Jim’s for years but this South location was a real bust today. I always sit at the counter and it was so loud from the dishwashers banging dishes it gave me a headache! My server literally threw my drink at me and my pancakes were burned so bad they were inedible. I told them and all I got was “sorry”. Do better Jim’s- I drove from East Austin for a $20 breakfast I left sitting on my plate! Nothing was eaten- will go to 183 location as is much better.
Terrible service standing to be seated everyone trying not to get another customer
Pressured us to leave the table because people were waiting to be sat. Not a good place to have a business meeting.
Cold hashbrown waitress informed us that chef said it would be 15 minutes “ if we wanted fresh hot ones”and cold grits. “ they were closing their grill so it was acceptable to offer us cold food. High school waitress Rebecca was kind and needs to move on from this poor restaurant. Manager gave us a big whopping 10% off. Haven’t been here in over 20 years and now I know why.
If you are picking up an order to go, check your bag to be sure your order is complete. Catfish is way too salty. The pie you get is NOT like the pie in display case, which a beautiful generous piece of pie.
Rude service all around. Our waitress acted like she hates working here. The girl at the front counter asked if I had a problem when looking at the various signatures and doodles left on the counter per the décor. Would not waste money here the food at a free hotel breakfast tastes better.
It was nearly empty. Tortilla soup was tastelessit consisted of a can of cheap vegetables soup and old old chicken. Onion rings with no color. Never will go back. I came home and took med for my stomach.
Me and my cousin went to Austin for ACL, woke up Friday morning excited for the day and for breakfast! We went to Jim’s in our pajamas (maybe our mistake) and walked in, the host (maybe the manager? not sure) asked my cousins name and told us to sit and he’d call us, didn’t give us a wait time. Every couple after, visibly older and better dressed, proceeded to get sat before us. Another older Hispanic couple (we are also Hispanic) who came in after us got sat and even the wife looked over at us with the man who was hosting watching her and said “what about you girls?” And he just ignored her. (Thank you to her for noticing we were still waiting! And for being the only person to stick up for us). So he obviously knew we were still waiting to be sat. It took until another daughter/mother duo that we know came after us to get sat before finally we had enough. I asked the man hosting what his method to sitting people was because everyone who had come after us had been seated? NO APOLOGIES just a “what was the name?” I said the name and then he started to grab menu’s and said “follow me.” And I said? WERE NOT EATING HERE. A “sorry I forgot to write your name” or “I forgot about yall” would’ve sufficed. There was an obvious age, race, and clothing difference between a majority of the patrons here versus me and my cousin, I didn’t know which one to take my pick from of why we kept getting passed over. We proceeded to go back to the car and cry cause we felt extremely judged and had no apology for it. We didn’t wanna be sat and potentially have our food messed with, so leaving was the best option. I hope yall take this and make sure no one else ever feels this way because it really was a crappy start to what was supposed to be a great weekend for us.
