La Familia Berkeley Reviews
Owner is super friendly, food was great, service excellent! Highly recommend if in the area and want to grab a quick bite.
Great neighborhood Mexican place, very affordable and delicious food! I had the camarones rancheros, really bright and plenty of food. My friend had the chicken quesadilla which was pure comfort food. Service was excellent and salsa was spicy. Outside seating was lovely. Would recommend!
Great food and lovely owner
Ive been a regular for over twenty years and have never had even one "less than superior" meal. Always fresh and prepared to order, the dishes are authentic (as possible given that we are in America), Maria the owner and Ken the husband are awesome and super friendly. Maria the Manager has been with them for at least twenty years. Great seating (add a table and chairs for your party) as well as outdoor seating for when the four legged family member comes along. They even have a fresh water bowl outside! I Highly recommend you go try it out. (FYI, I happen to be a professional chef, just so you know) Peace!
This is the best Mexican restaurant in Berkeley! The crispy fish and shrimp tacos are the bomb!! Ken & Maria and their 2 beautiful daughters are friendly and professional. The restaurant is clean and comfortable. I've been coming for YEARS!!
Some of the best Mexican food I have had in Berkeley! Very authentic and delicious. Quick service and kind workers, plus very reasonable prices!
Got the mole poblano and almost cried because it was just that good. To be fair, I was really hungry, but it tasted just like dishes I’d had in Mexico and was SO CHEAP for mole! Incredibly affordable across the board. Definitely coming back to get those fish tacos and more!
It’s the crispy tacos for me I can Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday& Friday. I order all the time from here from work not too far from the hospital I love the ladies here the owner is so sweet beyond friendly. Thank you for making authentic food bonitas!!!!
Hella solid, delicious and on point. Milld of winter at a break in the storms, I needed sustenance. The perfect taqueria had chicken soup with vegetables as a special. 10/10 would recommend. Homemade tasting, perfect portion, complete meal. Warmed me to the bones! I get dinner here at least once a week for me and my two teenagers, as a result of how great the food and service is we will keep coming back.
I had a machacha burrito with cheese and sour cream. It was amazing. I forgot to remove the foil at one point and didn't even care. I was also full 3/4 of the way through and couldn't stop eating. I will have to go back just to make sure it wasn't an anomaly - but good work tonight!
One of my staples, the Chile relleno burrito is my go to and the fish taco is superb.
Affordable prices for tasty and mostly authentic Mexican food served by a very friendly staff. Simple but colourful interior that makes you feel at ease. I'd recommend their fish tacos.
Probably the best fish tacos I've ever encountered in the Bay Area. All the dishes are really tasty and filling. They even make their own delicious, fresh juices and horchata. Love this place.
Love the fish tacos here, big size for the cost too! Quesadillas are great, and fajita plate is super delicious and filling. Hard to go wrong, all of it is great.
Had the chicken fajita burrito and it hit the spot. Will be back to try more of their menu items. Really great customer service, too. Definitely recommend!
They consistently make one of the best carne asada burritos in the Bay, and at a very generous price. Recommended with guac, sour cream, and lettuce. Top notch food at great price.
I have been looking for the quality of street tacos I remember from Southern California and can’t believe it took me this long to come here! I tried an assortment and loved everyone, but the shrimp taco and the carnitas were insanely good. So happy to have found a new favorite spot!
Real good food and healthy portions. The waitress was real nice and accommodating. Prices are reasonable and everyone talks to u from the staff.
I really like the ladies who work at this place. They are both friendly and very informative with my questions. I also enjoy the food
I adore this place. Affordable, good food quality, great service, cool mural / ambiance, has beer. BE HERE

If I'm craving for a shrimp burrito this is my spot I go to, Usually order on the phone but they also have online orders. It's a take out and very easy to grab your food and go. Very polite and professional customer service. I only tried their shrimp burrito and it's worth the price and tastes good.
Delicious! Hopped in here for lunch, everything was homemade and delicious. Highly recommend.
Great and super fresh food! We had a burrito, tacos and chips and everything was great, especially the home made salsas. Service was quick and very friendly. Prices were very fair and I loved that they have real cutlery. Good vegetarian options!
Taqueria La Familia exceeded my expectations and was delicious! I got the Calazbaza burrito (rice, pinto beans, salsa, zucchini, and onion) and it was delicious! The zucchini was really well spiced and cooked. I was nervous it might be large pieces of steamed and poorly spiced zucchini (common in veggie burritos), but it was SO tasty. The burrito wasn't massive, but definitely big enough and worth it for the price--getting a quality burrito for under $10 is more and more difficult to find. I have only been here once and gotten the one burrito, but I'd definitely go back! It was nice to have an outdoor dining option even though Ashby and Shattuck isn't the best ambiance. Staff were friendly and helpful and the service was really quick.
I don't know why people are giving negative reviews, my tacos were delicious. I didn't get food poisoning, I do agree they could have added more cheese tacos but other than that it was delicious and it came with chips. I'm going to eat there again for sure
Got the carne asada nachos, and horchata. The horchata was delicious and one of the best I’ve had in a while. Not to sweet at all. The nachos were good, I think it would be beneficial to ask for extra meet. The staff was super friendly. I’ll be back!
I've been coming here for years, and it’s still one of my favorite spots! My daughter and I absolutely love this place. I recently opened a salon in Berkeley, so it's great to have this gem nearby. We always order the fish tacos with rice and beans—absolutely delicious every time! Consistently great food and friendly service. Highly recommend!

Not many places in SF to get good authentic Spanish food and this place is pretty good. It feels like most of the smaller places I am use too. Great staff, they deliver to your table, food is really good, what more are you looking for. This place only has Spanish rice. I prefer to have white rice but I can't complain since there aren't many Spanish restaurants to begin with.
Food is authentic and delicious. The service is above excellent. I saw the matron of the restaurant bring tacos outside to a homeless man while we were eating our tacos. The bathroom is hard to access, just avoid.
The owners are incredibly friendly. The husband & wife take the time to get to know you. I've been going to them for five years & only once wasnt satisfied with my meal. To me that says a lot. f The food is great!
Excellent neighborhood Mexican food.. carne asada plate with black beans was great, good guacamole and tasty salsa..carnitas tasty too ..chili rellenos excellent …good veggies burrito nice and big..corn tortillas ok.. very friendly staff.. did not eat in but looks like it’s a popular place .. I would go again..
This was my first time here. It's an unseasonably chilly eve and I find being inside here is warm, cheerful and welcoming. I know this place is known for their fish tacos, but I have certain dishes I use as benchmarks. So I decided to go with one I use for this cuisine - the "wet" Chile Verde Burrito. It passed with flying colors. Served filling the length of a large platter and swimming in tangy chile verde sprinkled with cheese and a dollop of sour creme, it looked as tasty as it turned out to be. And filling. Good price, too. How can it get any better than that combo? Plus, they have now earned a place on my 'to do' list, to come back and try those fish tacos ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ P.S. - Now I'm back for my second visit and am having a fish taco and a shrimp taco. Others have criticized for small meat portions. I'm afraid I have to agree this time. But--not bad at the price. I'm just disappointed I didn't see a 'grande' option for those if us inclined. Yet, the food is tasty and I like this place.

I enjoy their food. I stop here when I commute through the area.

Very affordable and unpretentious. Not great food, though.
I’ve been here a few times and ordered tacos, a taco salad and a quesadilla. Last I went the quesadilla was overly salty. The food I think is good but I can’t say it was anything spectacular.
Food was okay and reasonably priced. Service was slow and inattentive. The place looks unkempt and needs work to be more presentable.
There seems to inconsistency in the food. The wet burritos were good. Because it highlights fish on the outside I wanted to try something with fish other than “fish taco” advertised outside. The only other dish was fish burrito. Big mistake. I didn’t taste any fish but there was a lot of rice and black beans ! No flavour. Too bad.

Got the fish tacos here because they had good reviews. No idea why. Maybe people around here like tortillas and greasy batter. Have they changed owners?
The place is cute. Seems to be popular. The staff is polite. Burritos were meh. It is almost as if spices do not exist anymore. I would say this was the most milk toast burrito I ever ate. Aqua Freska drinks and lemonade were too sweet.
I’ve given it a few tries and each time it’s just been really bland and uninspiring. I would be here all the time if it were good since we live close by, but unfortunately it isn’t. There are many better options for Mexican food in Berkeley and the rest of the bay.
I got the nachos supreme with steak. Food was mediocre, they just grated some mozzarella cheese on top with a scoop of guac and sour cream + beans of choice. The chips were okay, I always prefer thick chips for my nachos and the ones they had were thicker than thin (not thick enough for my taste though). The cheese could have been heavier, or they could have had their own in-house nacho sauce. What really leads me to rate this place as 2/5 is how slow it can be. I went during lunch and called in advance to ask how long it would take for my food to be ready. Guy said 5-10 minutes, cool. I get there and there are only two people ahead of me, I don't think it will take long. About half an hour later... finally I get my food. I don't understand why it took so long to get my food ready, or why they told me it wouldn't take long. I ended up rushing to scarf it down since my lunch break was almost done. Honestly at the pace they go it's better to eat at Gordo's

This place isn't good anymore, the food is terrible & the service is bad, It seems that it has different ownership. They were known for the best fish tacos, Not anymore, and still can't sit down inside. at lease have a bench outside. Was very disappointed with food quality. The last owner was amazing nice and knew how to cook authentic Mexican cooking. Will not return.
On Friday afternoon I purchases 2 Fish tacos and a melon Drink. I ate it tasted bland/old not fresh. 4 hours later I vomited and continued to Vomit ALL NIGHT LONG!! I am a man in good health and it knocked me on my AZZ. MAJOR FOOD POISONING. I did call the health department and they said they would investigate.
Screw this place !! The lady in front was rude ! And she didnt listen to me when i specifically told her do not put anything on the side she mugged me when all i was doing was waiting for my order they over filled my drink and it was spilling everywhere there quesadillas are not worth what there charging . On top of that they barley put any meat . I dont know what there problem was .
I been going hear since I was 16 years old. The owners husband and wife are wonderful people. I say them build this business up from ground up. Food is excellent and price is right. However today I had a horrible experience. I like to speak to the owner beacuse I respect them enough not to say. In the years I been going this my frist time going off about my money. Something happened please I need to speak to owner.
Literally, the WORST tacos I have ever tried. If my job wasn't up the street I wouldn't have tried it. The tacos were dry. They came with cheese but barely a sprinkle. I'm assuming to make you pay for "extra cheese", and they came with lettuce and tomato which wasn't typical but I figured I'd give it a shot. Bad choice. It was expensive and NOT worth it. My daughter got carne asada tacos that had dry, under seasoned meat. She hated them. The beans weren't good either and it's hard to mess up refried beans and rice. I would tell anyone to not eat here.

Very disappointed. At one time they made great burritos. I ordered two Carne Asada for my family.- I would’ve gladly paid for extra meat.- As it was, it was mostly refried beans- Very disappointed. They’re also smaller than they used to be. Do not recommend.
If you go in person, you have to order and pay at a kiosk in the store. It does not seem to work, but ends up charging you anyway. They do not speak English, so they cannot fix it. Now I have to dispute it with my credit card.
I’m so disappointed in this place. They used to be really good, service was great. Of recent the service is not so great. Food would be missing something, minor issues I let it go. But this time terrible! They threw a burrito in with nothing on it and tossed some sauce on. I had to drive back to exchange for a remake. It took over a hour of travel time for the exchange. It was no better than what got before. They just threw some watery extra sauce on it. Not going back to this place again, must be under new ownership and didn’t know about it. Wish the old owner was there. And if its under same own, they need to clean house. Wish I could give zero star!
