Very nostalgic place for me. Excellent food, and the tables are clean and not sticky like so many other diners. Both inside and outside seating, depending on the time of year. First time I ate here I was rescued from being abducted, and for my safety my family moved to Chico. The chicken strips I had were the best thing I'd eaten in awhile, and I loved the challenge of the triple thick chocolate shake. Every time I've been back, the food is still tasty, and the shakes are phenomenal

We were in a group of 4 and ordered from the outside. Our food was hot and ready in approx 15 min. The double cheeseburger deluxe was delicious. The burger was kinda thin so double was perfect for me. Great fries that tasted similar to McDonald's and they were cooked brown.

Ordered the chicken tender basket and recieved a large amount of chicken tenders. Was quite surprised at the amount for the cost. Was quite tasty and returned a few days later for the same order and it was just as good and abundant. The milkshakes are quite tasty as well.

We didn't try all the food but what we did eat was so delicious!! I had the fish and replaced my chips with zucchini chips. The COD did not disappoint, it was so juicy, better then restaurants Fish and Chips. The Zucchini was so perfectly cooked! Dipped in ranch, umm umm ummm! 🤤 Although the time of day we went, the sun was beaming on our backs standing at the order window. Everyone was retreating back to their cars. Big Al's brought back a nostalgia vibe of the 50's.

Still the best shake in town! I hadn't eaten here in many many years and I must say that while their shakes have remained superior despite the shrunken serving sizes and depressing price increase the quality of their burgers has increased dramatically! Their onion rings weren't half bad either. But seriously... nothing compares to their shakes, freezes, and the increasingly difficult to find anywhere else- gigantic, half & half ice-cream cone carefully dipped in chocolate magic that never fails to put a smile on my inner child's face after all these years.

Me and my chick split the double burger basket, it didnt come with a drink which was dissapointing. We got that and i got a regular vanilla malt with extra malt and it was just over $18. My advice if you order a malt with double malt and they give you a vanilla shake that has no color to it( just all white) maybe ask them about the malt. And ive been in the bathroom 3 times sonce i finished my non malted malt. Just saying. The burger and fries were pretty good. Not like the old Big Als though.

I love Big Al's. If you are a Chico local you most likely frequent Big Al's. My favorite items are there Fish and Chips and also any milkshake flavor combo. They also have excellent chocolate dipped cones, soft serve cones, or sundaes.

I’ve been going to Big Al’s since the 90s. Recently moved back home after 9 years and found they have new owners. Definitely different BUT I will say that darn special sauce tastes the same and it is the best with everything! I pulled in 11/2 @ 9:36PM starving and exhausted with mouths to feed. I didn’t realize the time and they close at 10PM. I wasn’t going to be that person. BUT holy mother of god the young woman who took my order was like NO we will feed you and got you. I was so grateful and thankful for her. It was a good size order and I only had a bill on me that she was able to break as well. Thank you for hooking me up on my sauces and thank you for your wonderful service-JJ

It's a wallet-friendly, extremely tasty, retro drive -in, the kind that don't exist anymore. It's a little gem. The chicken strips and fries are delicious as well as the corn dogs. Milkshakes are on the thinner side so we are looking forward to getting a malt next trip!

I always get good service here and the food is on point. There's a huge selection and they're pretty good at it all. It's a great place to stop and just get a soft serve or some other kind of malt drink on a hot day. The outside and inside of this establishment desperately needs a facelift, it would make the whole experience a lot more enjoyable, and a little less dingy feeling. I believe when it was first designed the way it looks now it was probably a hip happening place. And it could be today because of the food and people that work there. I wonder if they could do some kind of fundraising drive or promotion of some kind to raise money for redesign...

Been going there since I was in 4th grade. I'm 44 now. The corn dogs never disappoint, the dipped cones are still generous and amazing. Peanut Butter shakes are the deal! My Brother and I have both moved to different states but we're recently back to visit for our older brothers wedding, so before leaving town we had to pop in for a treat. As kids our Dad owned a Dental office just down the street and around the corner, so we frequented Big Al's. Especially on those hot summer days! Hasn't changed, and still the best!

Places like this don't exist in California anymore. Theres an undoor dining area that looks like it was last decorated in 1968, complete with faded real wood paneling, washed out photos of classic cars from the 50s, funky , old yellow painted walls, seats that are caving in, and old fashioned tin roof. The counter is ancient, and the menu is hand made on the wall. but the milk shake are REAL, thick, hand made, and cost less than fast food shakes! The burgers are fresh and good old fashioned ingredients! I love it!

Big Al's is a Chico landmark that has barely changed in the (almost) 50 years that I've been going there - in a good way. I was so happy that my shake tasted just like I remembered it from 15 years ago when I last visited Chico.

I was out boppin around with my pal Skillsaw and we hit about every place worth hitting, we even went down to Madam Volkanda's there on D Street and had her look into her crystal ball...she did, and said that evil was with us, and unless we ate pork wrapped in pork the evil would come and carry one of us away. WOW! Well, that was enough for me...we headed straight to Big Al's Drive In! We got them to make us bacon wrapped hotdog, doubled up on a burger bun. I believe we covered the bases because the evil was nowhere to be found the next morning....the Big Al's hotdogs are 5 stars ☆☆☆☆☆

It's been awhile since I've been to Al's. It hasn't changed much. Burger was delicious but smaller than I remember. The fish sandwich was just ok.. The fish patty itself was more like a square fishstick instead of the beer battered breaded cod. It was thin and a little too crispy. The banana milkshake didn't disappoint. It had fresh bananas in it Staff was working hard and efficiently. The atmosphere was great. Reminded me of the old days in Sacramento when we ate at the local mom and pop hamburger stand.

Not as good as it used to be. Went to buy a mocha chip milk shake. (Been my favorite since I was a child) and got a chocolate chip shake instead of the mocha chip I ordered. It was also half melted and the outside of the cup was never wiped down. I will give this place another try since it may have been someone new working there. Plus this place has been my favorite place forever.

Love this place, but I have no idea how to order a burger, apparently. They have very small burger patties and large ones as well. I rarely seem to get the big ones and it's certainly not clear how to get them. I tend to order the same things, which is why I don't understand the inconsistencies. This last time I ordered kids' burgers and got very large patties, but ordered something for myself and it had tiny ones. I was somewhat confused. Menu selection is rather large & the staff is always extremely polite. The lemon ice is a favorite. Prices are decent.

Great food with quick and friendly service. Burgers are comparable, but better, than in-n-out burgers with good ingredients and crispy fries. Chocolate malt was one of the best I've had. The only complaint is the dining area was saturated with flies. The minute we got our food they swarmed us. Made the eating experience very uncomfortable. I probably won't eat in again, but I'll definitely be going back and getting take out.

The food was alright. The large fry seemed small. And the shakes were a little small and not the best I have had. This place is great for when you just want to grab something to eat but don't care if the food recipes are all that great. Basically the shakes are just soft serve ice-cream blended with a single flavor. There is no cookies and cream, strawberry cheesecake or cookie dough so for this place you need to be okay with the simple flavors and sometimes they skimp on the flavors, specifically in the butterscotch shake. Fries are not well salted but they were crispy. Overall this place checks all the boxes but doesn't go above and beyond.

Everything was just a bit mediocre. Personally, I find their menu pretty confusing. You have normal burgers (cheese and regular), double burgers, deluxe burgers (which is hard to tell the difference just by looking at the menu), and then burger baskets (which again, isn't clear what comes in the baskets) with those multiple options as well. I ended up getting a cheese burger basket and a blackberry shake was a bit disappointed in the basket. The burger was mediocre, I've had better for a better price. The fries were fine. The shake though, tasted good! Loved how many different options of flavors that they had to choose from. Forewarning, it is very thick, so if that isn't your preference maybe try something else, but I liked it! I can't speak for the inside environment, since I just walked up to the window. But I do like ordering window from the outside. Walking up makes ordering quick and easy and there's a lot of room (because it's outside access) when there's a bit of a line forming. I do wish there were seperate windows or locations for ordering and actually picking up the food, since that could get a bit crowded and uncomfortable when trying to grab your food as others are ordering, but overall, this walm up window is one of the best features about Big Al's. The parking lot is big enough for the size of the place too and it's easily accessible. I like the charm of Big Al's, I just wasn't sold on the price per quality of product. May be back again for the shakes though.

I used to eat here as a kid and teen. Loved it then. Maybe my taste has a higher bar now? The toffee malt was okay - pretty sure it was just soft serve and toffee coffee syrup. My double burger was okay. The meat had some chunky debris in it that might have been bits off the grill...? It just tasted a bit dry and crunchy - not great. I ordered a little salad that was mostly as expected at a burger joint - iceberg lettuce, couple chopped tomato slices, but also had some marinated 3 bean salad on it which helped. Unfortunately I didn't ask for the dressing on the side so it was pretty wet with Italian dressing. My son's double cheese burger was okay, and so were his fries. He really like his Oreo malt. They say you can never go back - I should have left it to my memories. On a good note, the staff were very pleasant and efficient and the building is the old hambueger joint style - a pleasant vibe.

Rootbeer Freeze was my go-to. This could be such a cool place, but it's just potential rn. Will not eat there again. I could deal with it being unkempt, I mean it is old. But my last visit with my daughter, there was already some not very nice characters there(trying to be kind, people are different). But a guy came in dirty with no shirt on(he had one with him) and they didn't bat an eye. What happened to no shirt, no shoes, no service. Could be a nice family place.

My experience was during lunch around 11 to 12. I had the burger basket which wasn't to bad at its price around 8 dollars. It was filling enough with the side of fries that came with it. It's not gonna stuff you but it will just sit you at okay. The fries was a nice hand full and was quite crispy. It felt like fries that were left in the fryer for a little longer than they needed to be, but I feel like that was one of the selling points. It was still soft on the inside the the outside had a bit more bite to them, which I kind of enjoyed. The burger wasn't much to write home about but at its combo price I can't complain too much. It was tasty like any other burger, but that's where I leave it. Like any other burger. I like the service. You pull up, walk to the window and order from the nice people in their little busy place, then you wait for your name. Has a nice old school vibe to it.

Great shakes, but don't bother paying for a basic vanilla or chocolate shake for $6. It's just the soft serve ice cream that you can get for ~1/3 the price.

I was feeling a little nostalgic and remembered how I used to go to Big Al's quite a bit when I first came to town and for some years afterward. I ordered a burger basket and a chocolate shake which used to be an actual red plastic basket with a burger and fries in it. There was at least some effort involved in the presentation of the food. That seems to have changed because When my order came out, it was just one of those little red and white cardboard trays with some fries in it and a burger just wrapped in paper, burger, burger wrapping and the shake on a red plastic tray. Quite uninspiring. The burger tasted fine, like I remembered. The fries... Generic. The shake was decent. All in all, I didn't get the impression that anybody there particularly cared about the food or how it looked. I think my bill came to 13 to $16. At that price, it was a non-value. Probably won't be going back.

I would of gave you guys four stars because the burger was really good. The fries were pretty decent as well. The soda tastes like the machine though and had a mildew flavor almost which cancelled out the delicious flavor of the burger. Fix this and you will get better ratings. 🙏

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

It’s unfortunate I have to leave a 3-star review (being from Chico, I’ve always enjoyed Big Al’s). But lately, it feels like Big Al’s is starting to slip. For months now, the chocolate side of the soft-serve machine—including the swirl—has been down. That’s a big disappointment since the swirl is what many of us go to Big Al’s for. Last time I asked about it, I was told it was “being fixed.” Fast forward a couple months, and I get the same excuse—only this time the employee rolled their eyes and admitted they weren’t even sure it would ever be fixed. To make things worse, when I asked if it cost extra to dip vanilla in chocolate, I was told yes. I suggested it should be free (at least until the chocolate side is working again), but I got no response. That stung a bit—because offering a small gesture like that would show customers you value their experience while things are being worked on. Big Al’s has always been a Chico classic, and I’d love to keep supporting it. But please—can we get an honest update on whether the chocolate soft-serve/swirl is coming back? And in the meantime, maybe consider offering the chocolate dip at no extra charge to make up for it. Little things like that go a long way in keeping locals like me coming back.

Unbelievable how small a Deluxe Cheeseburger was!! Barely the same size as a child's burger from burger King... The shakes were pretty good, could have been a bit thicker. We won't be going back for anything but shakes.

Took away the other three stars because i did not like the cleanliness the quality or the price. 5 bucks plus tax for a small brown bag of onion rings that were extra greasy from being cooked twice. Theres goes price and quality right there. They have an old worksite igloo water container for public use. 😝 And there were old warn wood pannels from years of not being replaced. I wont be back.

I went with my boyfriend to get a burger about 15 minutes ago, and we are just greatly taken aback. While my boyfriend was paying for his food.. I noticed a blonde female nodding out while assembling a burger. I felt disgusted and briefly mentioned it to my boyfriend leading him to feel the same and want to leave with a refund. The manger would not take any word into consideration, instead questioned my boyfriend and made it an issue when we simply were asking for a refund. Made a scene between coworkers, made condescending comments, and all around a sour don’t want to hear it attitude.

Tiny burgers, stale buns,large fry was more like miniature.. strawberry shake was decent but not worth the over 6 dollar price. Spent 26 dollars on 2 people and left hungry and unhappy.

The food was awful. It doesn't taste very good. There's no substance to it at all. The portions are small.

For starters, the burger was bland and dry. It got drier with each bite and the second half stopped tasting bland and just tasted bad. Heartburn and major bloated for the next 23 hours, which never happens to me. I will say the tater tots were phenomenal. Rich brown and crispy enough to sharpen your teeth on the outside, gooey delicious potato mush on the inside. Didn't have a shake. I've heard good things, but it's unlikely I'll want to stop there again

Food may seem ok, horrible kitchen conditions one of the worst I’ve ever seen. The owner has absolutely no care in the world for the standards of kitchen quality, management and staff have no real cleaning standards.That is the fault of the managers, while one may be helpful the other is a tyrant who has been there far to long and is stuck to an old way of thinking that has harmed the atmosphere at big Als, what is sad is a lot of people know that exactly who that manager is. Pastrami and other meats were green and still being served to customers and being cooked to hide the fact that they could get someone sick.kitchen left with barely trained staff, Absolutely horrible, while the food seems enjoyable, a surprise health inspection is in dire need. New management needed as well. More like new owners as the fault lies with him not being able to provide the same standard that previous owners had. While this has been a staple for many families over the years, I urge you if you were to look under any counter, grill, or fryer you would find yourself losing your appetite. Blame will most likely be put on the staff but it 100% lies with 2/3 of the leadership.Shame on you owner, ruining a wonderful establishment that was founded on quality and have reduced it to a cash grabbing penny pinching scheme for yourself using the reputation of a brand to make yourself money while tarnishing the legacy of it. Only reason people go is for the nostalgia and the thought that they are receiving the same quality of food where the truth is far from it. Very sad and again don’t blame the workers for getting you sick, the managers and owner should be. And clean your kitchen, mopping and sweeping the visible parts are not enough gross. Shame on you, I didn’t even want to leave a review but the green pastrami meats still being served crossed a whole other line.

My family lived in Chico for three years before discovering big Al’s two years ago which we were so happy to find!!! Big Al’s has that awesome mom and pop drive in family feeling to it. Big Al’s “ HAD “ the best burgers, fries, ice cream, root beer floats, milkshakes and customer service in Chico until about 8 months ago 😢 sadly that has changed. For about 16 months we treated our family of 4 to Big Al’s every twice a month. We don’t have too many places our family can all enjoy a meal from the same place since one of our children is gifted with autism so food options are extremely limited. This is the 3rd in 8 months that burgers were pink inside and the fries soggy after the 8min drive home. After the first time we figured it was a one time thing since this hasn’t happened before so we threw them away ( not happy about the wasted money ) but everyone has a bad burger once in a while right? Wrong 😑 two weeks later the same thing so again we threw our money into the garbage and decided we were done with Big Al’s 😢 do you know anyone who can afford to throw their money in the garbage? Not us!!!! Today is the first time in 7 months we tried Big Al’s hoping things would be back to normal again, unfortunately the cheese burger baskets had no cheese, pink meat and soggy fries 🍟 I believe putting all the food in one little bag is of course going to make half your fries soggy on the 8 min drive home since it’s piled on top of each other to where the bag doesn’t close. This time I decided I was going back down to Big Al’s to have the cheese burger baskets redone. Bella who took my order originally helped me after waiting 10 minutes. I explained to Bella that the cheese burgers were pink and that there isn’t even cheese on them. I asked her to redo the baskets. Bella said that they aren’t under done but she would redo the burgers but not the fries that were sitting right there with the pink cheese burgers. I asked her to redo the whole thing because we want to eat our fries ( now cold ) with our cheese burgers but she refused to do so. This will absolutely be our last time going to Big Al’s I’m sorry to say. FYI the burgers were NEVER pink until 8 months ago so yes we know what they looked like before that. I’ve rarely experienced rude customer service like this before. I’ve always recommended Big Al’s to everyone but not anymore. Thank you for ruining one of our few family places we could enjoy as a family. Very heartbreaking 💔

I went with my girlfriend because she has been wanting to try it out we both got burgers and a shake. They messed up my burger and there was plastic chunks in both of our shakes. Which sucks because the shakes were good. But still I don't wanna have to watch out and make sure I don't drink plastic chunks when I'm trying to enjoy a milkshake. The whole place was pretty dirty too, the counter was sticky and overall didn't feel like a trustworthy place to eat. Definitely will not be coming back.

The hamburger was $10 as I ordered a double burger and the girl said it was small so to upsize she didn't tell me it was almost $5 more it was not worth it at all it was terrible and my wife got the roast beef sandwich and a shake and it came to $25 overpriced and not worth it first time trying it

This place is terrible I get home to find out all the food is made wrong or forgot items. There is no number to call to reach anyone to get any service….

Rude inexperience manager insisted I was trying to pay with fake money. Did not make it right and did not apologise. Terrible service and greasy food, if it weren't for my kids favour I would never go.

This was by far the worst experience I've ever had. The quality was absolutely horrible. Everything tasted like it had been sitting for hours. We got a burger that was supposed to have everything on it and all it had was a broken patty and a pickle chip. The fish sandwich was SO greasy, and had no flavor at all. The fries tasted like reheated fries and were so soggy they wouldn't come out of the wrapper. I do not recommend this place at all. They changed owners at some point and it is not the same. When we called to complain they had 0 customer service. They didn't do anything to fix the issue. We will not be going back.

I ordered a double cheeseburger and it was incredibly dry—tasted like it was cooked straight from a frozen patty with no seasoning or care. On top of that, I was surprised to find out there were no free refills for soda—I had to pay full price just to get another drink. The cleanliness was also a big issue. We had to ask someone to clean our table even though the place was nearly empty, and the floor was sticky and dirty with flies buzzing around. It really didn’t feel like a place that takes pride in its food or its space. Definitely won’t be coming back. There are better spots that actually care about quality and customer experience.

Hey Big Al's, you can't ride on people's nostalgic memories forever. While the vintage vibe is cute, your kitchen and dining area are grimey and beyond repair, a full remodel is necessary for cleanliness. Came by and ordered a burger, where various upcharges were made without warning, and after paying $40 for 3 basic burger, 2 shakes, and 1 basket of fries, we found a bread bag clip in our burger ( including pic). The staff was somewhat rude from the start making us wonder if the mess-up was on purpose. The staff really seems to be lacking customer service training.
