Cato's Ale House Oakland Reviews
Had the Mezcal Burger with fries from the special menu. Incredible flavor and high burger quality. Would order again, but also would love to see the other magic things this kitchen can do. Quesadilla had a great cheese blend. It was a touch overly-grilled, but didn’t take too much away from the quality of the dish for me. Went on a Monday night for trivia. What a fun time! Couldn’t ask for more from a place like this.
Cato’s is the perfect place for a great meal and beer selection in a neighborhood atmosphere. Their food is always excellent, staff is kind and friendly. We love coming it here!
Amazing! Bartender and staff are super nice and food is delicious. Great ambience at night.
Cato’s is our favorite pub in Oakland and top in the Bay Area. Always a huge selection of beers and delicious food! It’s a fantastic pick for dinner and lunch, but also to pop in for a quick beer whenever.
My partner and I met some friends here for a quick bite and drinks and we loved it. The key reasons to stop by: 1. A diverse trap list full of delicious beers - something for everyone. 2. Awesome garlic and sweet potato fries. 3. A quiet back patio with plenty of heaters if needed. Importantly for us, this place is also very bike friendly. They have a bike rack in the back of their patio in a protected place for you to lock up.
This place ended up being the perfect spot for an after hike Saturday lunch. The cider was refreshing and my pizza was delicious. Perfectly soft center and crunchy crust. The fries were crispy too! There were people here enjoying their day, and there was plenty of seating. They even have an outdoor patio! Everyone we encountered was friendly. My husband and I would definitely come back!
Such a great neighborhood pub! They've got a good food menu and a ton of rotating taps. The service is friendly and there's plenty of seating - they've got a cool windowed room at the very front which is our preferred place to sit. The fish and chips was killer (fries needed some salt and pepper, but no big deal). We'll definitely keep coming back here.
Cato’s switched from it’s COVID set up to its regular set up. First time experiencing the restaurant and the staff is very friendly. Casual atmosphere and beautiful sun patio for dining. Ordered Fish and Chips. It came out hot and crispy. I’ve had larger fish portions elsewhere but these weren’t bad!
Found this treasure while walking up Piedmont and followed my nose to the amazing smells that were romancing my senses. I highly recommend the fish and chips made with snapper not cod or whitefish! The Patio Pilsner is light and refreshing and is just one of many beers on tap. 5 stars ++ Update 1/2020 Not sure what they have done differently but I went back and the fish and chips were greasy and the fries weren't the same. The tarter sauce wasn't as good either. Very disappointed in the food I got
I came for the $5 Guinness & corned beef & cabbage special on 03/17/19. The corned beef was tender & delicious. The cabbage and potatoes were good too. Outside of St. Patrick's Day, I've had the Catoburger & fries which are always good. The beer selection is very diverse. Once a week, they tap Pliny The Elder. I'm a repeat customer!
Just popped into Cato's Ale House after wandering around the district shopping, and what a great decision that was. Three piece blues band playing were putting up a great atmosphere without making it too loud to talk. Excellent range of locally brewed craft ales some of which weren't too crazily hippy to taste like beer! Excellent pub, busy, happy & welcoming.
Came here just last week and it was great. Such a chilled out place with its own character and feel. Wooden hipster kind of place without being dirty and loud. Low dim lights and small tables tucked in all corners make it ideal for a date night. First come first seated kind of rules so come early around 7pm or bit later after 9pm to easily get a table. We came around 8:30pm and most of the tables were taken so we chilled by the bar having couple of beers on tap and in about 15-20 min we got a table for four. Definitely easier to find table for 2 :) Service is friendly. Food is really good with all sorts of options from salads, sandwiches, pizzas, burger and so on. Good options for vegetarian people as well. Between the four of us we ordered: -Margarita Pizza full pie shared by 2. Too big to finish. Darn tasty and cheesy! - Lebanese chicken sandwich - our friends said was good - Crab burger - our friends said it outshined the chicken sandwich and was tasty. Beers were great. They even had Pliny the Elder on tap that Thursday and it was available throughout the night woohoo! We felt comfortable, welcomed and totally at home. That earns 5 stars in my book. Can't wait to be back to try more from their menu!
Wasn't crazy about the Simco hazy IPA, but we go there after COVID vaccinations and enjoy it
Still the best place in town for a variety of hand pulled lagers and pilsners, etc. But a question—- did you guys stop making your chips in-house? (You used to specify house-made chips on the older menus; new menu just says chips). Your chips were my fave, but last time I was there they tasted like kettle chips out of a bag. Bartenders at Cato’s are the absolute BEST!
Went here for lunch over the weekend with the family. We were there at about 30 past noon and it was not crowded at all. Think the crowd comes in much later. This place has the "friendly neighborhood bar" feel to it. Pretty good collection of artisanal beers. We ordered the falafel burger, the banh mi tofu sandwich that is actually vegan and double slices of margherita pizza for the kids, all of which were good. The portions are generous and the pricing is very nominal. This is right on the main street so parking could be an issue.
Nice little neighborhood bar. Food was decent. Fried chicken sandwich was good. Pozole was a bit watery and light on flavor. Main issues were the lack of seats at the bar which leads to people just standing at/around the bar so those sitting can't really see the TV's. Also took about 25 minutes to get a slice of pizza. Drinks are very competitively priced for Oakland so that's a plus. Overall I liked it just some annoyances.
Asked for a medium rare burger and got a medium well. Rather go to smoke house or Ahns for a burger that is well priced and good quality since they can’t even get the meat cooked to order. The only redeeming factor is they have Pliny the elder on tap.
Came in for a burger today after not having visited in many years. I remember the burgers as being really great. Not anymore. Thin with an off taste and the plate was just a mess of thrown together salad and burger toppings. Salad was drenched in dressing. Things have gone downhill unfortunately.
