La Mexicana Oakland Reviews
Came here on Christmas Day at about 5pm, Emma the owner greeted us and was very friendly. The soup of the day was vegetable soup, I declined (didn’t sound appetizing) she brought out the soup anyways an offering of sorts. To my surprise it was extremely delicious. There was cabbage carrots and maybe another vegetable. I ordered the super burrito Asada, it was AMAZING. The meat wasn’t salty it was creamy with thick tortilla. The salsa is a little spicy, addicting. The tortillas are fresh made to order VERY THICK and flavorful not dull tasting. There is parking in the back or on international, the restaurant is very homey, and clean. I could hear the dishes being cleaned reminded me of my nanas house. We have already eaten there again. I recommend to EVERYBODY especially those who only know of Otaezz Check out this gem & look for Emma.
The best! I wish they weren't closing. Open since 1932!
Absolutely in love with this place! I've been here twice this month; Once with my family where we ordered a variety of items and I was amazed by how delicious every single plate was, I just had to come back! I recommend the Enchiladas, Menudo, and especially the quesadilla de maíz, they're amazing quality and a great choice for picky eaters as well. The owner is incredibly nice and has been the reason my family has come here for years. This month was the first time I came here since i was really young, and I can truly see myself sticking to this spot for a taste of home. Definitely worth a try!
Super fresh!!! 🤤 food was packed with flavor service was great 😊 cute home like feeling really cozy will comeback for sure try this place out Fresh made tortillas on the spot!!❤️
Wow, this place is STILL here 45 years later when I first came here. Surviving 45 years means something. I do like it better when the street was called East 14th Street though! House made tortillas and all your normal Mexican food stuffs are here.
The food here is the best! Made with love this is as good as it gets absolutely delicious 100% AUTHENTIC MEXICAN food that stands out from the rest with excellent service, Emma has ran this business for over 40years as confirmed by a pregnant long time customer who shared that she is from the 4th generation in her family that eats here. I strongly recommend La Mexicana!!! Gracias Emma
5 stars simply for the tortillas, very authentic and fresh, made from scratch! Huge size too! Other vegan/vegetarian options are limited to whole beans and guacamole.
If you know, you know... Everything I have tried on the menu is delicious! Mole, chile relleno, caldo, guac, salsas, steak, todo! Been going to Emma since 1998 (my partner's family since they opened up!). She always welcomes us as if we are walking home. You have to try those gorgeous handmade corn tortillas, I've never had any like them... Support the local businesses, they are an important pillar of our communities.
If you want fresh handmade tortillas and comfort food enchiladas La Mexicans will satisfy you. Don’t forget to ask for butter for the giant thick delectable handmade corn tortillas !
The best chile colorado I've tried, don't even have to order. She knows exactly what I want !

My dad, who was born in 1943, started going there in the 5th grade. Needless to say that I grew up going there. I raised my family in Tracy, and we would still eat here as often as we could. 73 years of La Mexicana for us! I was going to go in next week. But I just heard Emma had to close. I am heartbroken, but I wish her the very best! If she opens something else, somewhere else.....let me know! Emma, I am on Facebook! Michelle Trew (McAllister)
My favorite caldo de pollo ever, the best tortillas, and the mole dishes are out of this world. They also have my favorite guacamole. Emma is the best and I'm always so much happier after I visit. Thank you Emma for taking such good care of my family for 30 years now. Te queremos 🥰
I grew up at La Mexicana! My Children and Grandkids too! It’s the best Mexican in the Bay Area! My family is extremely sad, they are closing! Emma is a gem, we love her dearly! Best wishes on your next chapter…🙏❤️😥
My parents started going to La Mexicana before my brother was born and he’s 75. It’s by far the most authentic, tastiest Mexican food we’ve ever had. Rumor has it that they are closing. Rent is too high.
I've been going to La Mexicana for decades and they've never disappointed me! They make their own tortillas and the meals are hearty and flavorful. You will never leave this place still hungry and the people who work here are super-friendly. They also have a small parking lot behind the restaurant if you cannot find parking along the street.
When my mom was pregnant with me, her and my dad would go to La Mexicana. When the family got together for birthdays. La Mexicana was the place to go. When I lived in Alameda I went to La Mexicana twice a month.
Some of the best Mexican food in Oakland! (and thats saying alot). The owner is super nice and the fresh tortillas are so incredible. This place is in my top spots and ive been to a TON of different Taquerias/trucks.
All I can say my friends had to role me out I was so full. The chips, salsa, and main course got me 💯. Highly recommend. It is towards East Oakland so be careful. There is parking in the back. Street parking is slim and on International Blvd so. It would be wise to park in the back.
The food is truly amazing and authentic. A friendly family run business that is bright and inviting. The waitress Emma has been serving since I was a little girl. It is truly on of Oakland's hidden gems. Also the price is definitely affordable and the portions are huge. By far my favorite Mexican restaurant not only in Oakland but the whole bay area.

They will close at the end of the year. Such a loss. Great food at reasonable prices.
