Joya Palo Alto Reviews
My favourite restaurant in the area for a calm dining. I specially like their small bowl with salmon and sushi bites. But always was wondering why they didn’t serve the rolls. And now they’re adding the sushi rolls to the testing menu. They’re really great! Fresh and simple ingredients, no greasy and non healthy topings, amazing seared salmon on top ✨🍣 Just. Simple. Delicious. Rolls. Highly recommend 👍
My go-to spot! I absolutely love the concept of ordering from an iPad—it's super quick and efficient, making the whole dining experience seamless. It’s also in a great location in downtown Palo alto, so you can walk around after your meal! I can proudly say this place has the best chicken karaage I've ever tasted; it's perfectly crispy and packed with flavor. The service is outstanding, with quick and friendly staff always ready to assist. Beyond the karaage, all the food is fantastic. I also highly recommend the ramen and sushi bites; both are consistently delicious and satisfying. Whether you’re looking for a quick meal or a leisurely dining experience, this place never disappoints. Highly recommend!
I love this place! I like all their Japanese offerings. It’s a solid place to get Japanese food. I usually get the salmon ikura don or the stir-fried pork belly and both are good. Their raw fish can be a little pricey but I feel that is expected for Japanese food. The service is fast. I don’t feel like we ever wait too long for our food. You can order on the iPad, which I appreciate, and see your order move through here queue. For payment you pay at the counter. The interior is nice. There’s table and booth seating. It’s decorated in warm wood panels and feels clean and new, and warm and friendly. Parking: There are many parking garages in Palo Alto so it’s not too hard for us to find parking
I really enjoyed my experience at YAYOI! I was searching for a teishoku style meal and it was exactly what I was looking for. It was really popular on the Sunday afternoon for lunch but we were still seated quickly. I ordered the hitsumabushi which came with a cute little laminated instruction card. It was marinated eel over rice served with toppings and dashi broth. My friend ordered the mix toji and 6 pc salmon sashimi. The mixed toji was katsu, wagyu, and shrimp. We enjoyed every part of our meal. The service was good too, the kitchen was short staffed on that day so food took a bit longer to come out but we enjoyed our meal regardless. I would come again to try all of their other dishes for sure at any location.
We were happy to know there is no need to wait on Saturday night, however most of the tables were occupied. The ordering process helps to focus on carefully choosing what you want without being rushed, there are tablets near each table to go through the menu and order more when needed. The food is good overall, a good choice for different Japanese dishes, snacks and drinks, feels authentic. Staff is good and polite.
We came during lunch time and almost 1pm on Saturday. There were plenty of seatings so no wait time at all. Each table has a tablet and you can order straight from there without talking to anyone. The food definitely got a bit more pricey compared to a few years ago when we were here, but the food was still good. It came super fast right after we ordered. I highly recommend getting the gyoza with wasabi mayo. Very unique and it's mildly crispy. Very tender bites to get started with the meal. I got a sukiyaki set. Just the right balance of sweetness in the sukiyaki, it comes with an onsen egg and you get to pick seaweed salad or hijiki salad ( I recommend the later one). Overall a good meal, but food is getting more and more expensive.
Our party of 4 came here for a work dinner. The iPad was a nice touch to order everything. We ordered a large variety of appetizers, sashimi bowls, eel, and dessert. There was a good amount of food to try and everyone was satisfied. The wagyu, tomago, sashimi were all standouts. The red bean mochi was my favorite of the desserts too.
So we never have been to a restaurant where you order by monitor...lol. I think we're too old school and this would be the reason we gave 4 stars instead of 5. Food was delicious and presentation was pretty. Prices were reasonable but their menu limited. Udon was REALLY GOOD...NOODLES IN UDON WAS DA BOMB!! Salmon was fresh and overall food was delicious. We didn't see the staff that much, they pretty much stay in kitchen to get food ready from what people order on the monitor. But when they did come out to give us our food they were very friendly.
[4/5, Palo Alto, CA] 肉うどん(Niku Udon) was pretty much what I expected - bouncy texture udon, soupy, generous servings of green onions, some kelp and a touch of tempura flakes. The sushi rolls were solid and reminded me of @naminori.nyc - great taste, warm rice, relatively crispy seaweed - of course, it would be an affront to compare it to @naminori.nyc but I saw similarities. The 焼き肉重 (Yakiniku-ju) was great - definitely order it. Appetizers of #gyoza and #takoyaki were okay. Taste was great overall, but a little pricey. Appetizers came out after mains too so that was a blemish. Will come back.
The food was pricey but not fresh. I guess the only good thing was the mochi. I don't really like both rice bowl 😞
Came here the other day and it was quite a decent experience. The prices are definitely expensive for the quality and amount of food you get, but the food is good. (+) "Fun" process of ordering from a tablet at your table. (+) Very nice decor and the restaurant is fancy. (+) Miso katsu - sauce is delicious, katsu is nice (+) Mix toji - good, you get one ebi though, but a decent amount of beef and katsu. (+) Free Gohan refill. Very much appreciated with how good the sauce is. (+) Some alcohol options are available. (-) We also ordered a medium side of curry but it never came even though it was marked as fulfilled. Then we asked about it twice, the first time they ignored it and never followed up, then they said they delivered it to another table. Whoopsies. We just had them take it off the bill but it would have been nice to try. Overall, pretty good but expensive.
Terrible terrible staff. The worst service I’ve received in a long time. A friend and I walked by and asked if we could be seated. They told us we’d need to order in the next 10 minutes because they would be closing in 40 minutes. We happily agreed, but then, the staff would not stop pestering us for the entire night. We were asked to pay 15 minutes into our meal. Again, this would be fine. I completely understand wanting to close on time. But the staff kept continually coming over to tell us they were closing soon, even though they had just served us our food. We did everything we could to eat quickly, and we even asked for boxes in advance so we could leave on time. The staff must have come over at least 10 times in the course of 40 mins, and we didn’t even leave late! We left on time (even a couple minutes early)! Just don’t take customers so late into your dining hours if you are going to breathe down their neck the entire night. So incredibly unprofessional.
This place used to be so great, which is why my most recent visit was such a disappointment. I hadn’t been in months since I moved and no longer live in the area, but I was nearby yesterday and decided to stop in because I missed the food. When I arrived, I asked for a table for one. The host said there was “table 34 over there” (pointing) or “this one.” I chose the one she pointed to, but she didn’t clearly indicate which table it was and went back to what she was doing at the register. When I asked for clarification, she seemed annoyed that she had to show me to my seat. Once seated, I was disappointed to find that I was given a physical menu instead of the self-service tablet. That was actually one of the main reasons I loved coming here. I was also seated very close to a family who kept staring at me, which made the experience uncomfortable, possibly due to how close the tables are. I ordered a Diet Coke, but it never arrived. When I let the server know that I had ordered one and no longer needed it, she simply said “oh” and walked away. The food, as always, was great — especially the karaage and the salmon bites. However, the service has noticeably gone downhill, which is really disappointing given how much I used to enjoy this place.
Every meal is a kid meal here. And no this is not normal even in Japan. You have to order 2 sets per person to be full because the portion is so tiny. In that sense the food here is way over priced. We went straight to another restaurant after finishing here because of the portion here. Food tastes okay.
I used to come here a lot. Haven't been for 3 years, and it's gone downhill. The katsu was terrible today, smaller and tougher meat, plus more like a Chinese dish rather than Japanese katsu. The salmon was rubbery (look at the photo) and not the right cut for sashimi. No bueno. Sorry guys two thumbs down. Menu and ordering is great and food came out super quick. Price is alright. Kids meal legit. Just not really Japanese food, and not very tasty.
Last visit was really disappointing. The waygu beef was so chewy that I had to swallow it because I couldn't break it down. Overcooked to the point I could only taste the sauce and no meat. The chicken catsu was well tenderized and was crunchy in all the right places but I cant overlook the fact that the waygu was beyond overcooked. I keep coming back because I'm chasing the delicious food they served me years ago when they had tablets. Now I'm worried if as the quality of the food items will go back to their former glory.
I had lunch here with my family today, 12/6/25 around 1-2pm. I ordered the miso katsu and liked how it came out. The server said to be careful to my toddler sitting next to me as my order is hot. After I had my toddler settle down with his food, I had mine. I had a first bite on my miso katsu maybe 3-4 minutes after my son’s food came out. When I had the first bite, it was so hot that it burnt my lips and tongue. I wish my server did let me know how hot can it be because from the outside, I didn’t even see any steam coming out of it and just took a bite. When I let my server know, she didn’t really do anything and went and talked to her co-workers. Since I didn’t hear back from her until we asked for a check, I asked her if she did let her co-workers know about the issue and oh wow, her response was “since our food is cooked at the moment, it can be hot.” Do you think I don’t know? Of course I know ALL food can be hot. What I am saying that it was burning hot that it burnt my lips. We dine out always and never had this kind of thing happen. Do you think I have no idea that food is cooked at the time? What a response to somebody who’s lips and tongue are burnt? Overall food was good and the ambiance was okay, but the server’s reaction& response ruined everything.
I ordered Ton Katsu. It’s $26. I was hoping to get a thick cut Ton Katsu, like the tasty one in Japan or Hawaii, but no. It took a while to get my food and the Ton Katsu wasn’t even hot. It felt like it’s been sitting there for a while. The food didn’t taste good either. The tableware they used was plastic. This place is definitely way overpriced. We’ll never come back!
