Chowders San Francisco Reviews
Every time I visit my son and we go to San Francisco, there’s something that can’t be missed: enjoying a white clam chowder at Chowder’s, at Pier 39. It has become a special tradition for us. The clam chowder is simply delicious—creamy, comforting, and full of flavor—perfect to enjoy while walking along the pier and taking in the lively atmosphere. Without a doubt, an absolute must-try on every visit to San Francisco.
Chowders Pier 39, located at Pier 39 in Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco, is known for its homemade clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl since 1987. It’s a great stop for tourists looking for an authentic San Francisco experience.
Happened to come here quickly. I asked the staff if they were still open and they said yes and were very friendly and accommodating! The food was amazing. I got a crab melt and it was soo delicious! Tried one from some place in Monterey and it didn’t even compare to this one. Plus it was very clean. Loved it here and would definitely recommend.
I stopped at Chowders during my visit to Pier 39 and ordered the clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. While the chowder itself wasn’t the absolute best I’ve ever had, the bread bowl was phenomenal—fresh, chewy, and perfectly tangy. The atmosphere is what really made the experience memorable. Sitting outside with a view of the water, the sounds of the pier, and the energy of all the people exploring made the meal feel special. It’s a great spot to enjoy classic San Francisco sourdough and soak in the lively pier vibe. I’d come back again for the bread bowl alone and the overall experience.
I’ve been coming here for over 31 years, first time just visiting, however, now that I work for a major airline, every time I have an overnight. I met the owner on my last visit and even bought a t-shirt. On this visit, Betzy took care of me and was great! Even being on the job for a few weeks, she was great and told me she is happy to be here. It’s nice when businesses hire good people and it shows! In short I highly recommend Chowders every time you visit SFO!
My wife and I visited here on a Sunday. I had the New England Clam Chowder served in a sourdough bowl. The soup was excellent and the sourdough was fresh. I agree with the advertising "Chowder so good you'll want to eat the bowl" Comfortable atmosphere with friendly and efficient service. I will definitely return again.
Chowder’s clam chowder is seafood heaven packed in a Boudin bread bowl! Creamy, flavorful, and loaded with clams the ultimate comfort food. It gave me the perfect warmth on those unexpectedly cold San Francisco summer days. Loved the cozy, laid-back vibe. A must-try at Fisherman’s Wharf!
Oh my god, just the chowder I needed! Visiting pier 39 provides MANY food options, and I’m glad I made the right choice with Chowder’s. Just an all around great food experience that’s casual and comforting. The chowder was perfect and FRESH, and the fish and chips we got had an amazing crunch to it! I usually don’t eat fish and chips, but Chowder’s has changed that! The service was good too, nothing crazy but very kind. Definitely try this place when you need some food visiting Pier 39!

Excellent fish and chips even to take away.very crispy at least four slices of well fried and not oiled at all fish.chips very thick soft inside and crispy outsider.perfect sour cream
This restaurant is great if you just want some clam chowder without having to wait on a table. The restaurant also have good views of the boats.
I hadn’t been to Chowder’s in about 20 years, so this visit was a bit of a nostalgia trip for me. It’s always interesting to return somewhere after that much time and see how it holds up. The clam chowder itself was decent — not bad, but not particularly memorable either. It had a solid texture and flavor, but it didn’t quite have that rich, standout taste I was hoping for. I’d give the soup 3 stars. What absolutely delivered, though, was the sourdough bread bowl. It was just as good as I remembered — perfectly crusty on the outside, soft and warm on the inside, and the ideal companion to the chowder. The bread alone is worth the stop. That’s a full 5 stars from me. Overall, if you’re going for the classic sourdough bread bowl experience, you won’t be disappointed.
So I finally tried Chowders in SF, Pier 39, famous for their clam chowder in sourdough bread. Honestly, it was an ok‑ok experience. The chowder was fine but I could barely taste the clam here and there, definitely few grains of sand – could have been better. Ambience is nice though, comfy seats and a good mix of cuisines on the menu. Felt slightly pricy, Had to try it once, but not blown away. Traveler Tips 🧳 - There might be better chowder spots, but if you’re nearby, give it a shot. - Maps can be a little confusing, especially if you’re coming from the deck – keep your eyes open. - It gets crowded, so plan to visit during non‑peak hours for a smoother experience.
Absolutely fantastic clam chowder, there's a reason these guys are the original bread bowl chowder places. I couldn't believe how many fresh clams were inside the chowder! I was expecting to wait a few minutes to get my food but as soon as I put my card away the bread bowl was ready! The cashier literally turned around and back with my food in less than 10 seconds. I can't believe how fast that service was! Now this was a random Thursday afternoon so I couldn't say the same for a weekend. Clam chowder itself is amazing, I added some hot sauce in there to kick it up a notch; only reason I didn't give a 5 star is because I didn't really like the bread bowl itself, I feel like it really lacked the classic sourdough flavor that sourdough normally has, it tasted really plain to me, like eating an unsalted soft pretzel from the movie theaters. It just tasted like dense bread to me but all in all, the main event the clam chowder itself is definitely worth a taste!
This is a drive-by fish and chips restaurant. The food really isn’t bad, but it’s not particularly noteworthy either. Don’t get me wrong, it’s really not bad, your basic 3-out-of-5 seafood. Self-service. But the price reflects that too, which I was totally okay with. My wife and I I both got the fish and chips and we were satisfied with it. Would recommend if you want a no-frills fisherman’s wharf meal.
You can enjoy a regular clam chowder and fish and chips here at a reasonable price. The chowder is good, but you can find better ones at other restaurants in Pier 39. The view is nice, though you should expect a few birds to join you while you eat, the staff do their best to chase them away whenever they get inside the restaurant.
Love loveeeee their clam chowder in the sourdough breadbowl. It is self order at counter and free seating indoor/outdoor. Generous portions of clams, bacon in the soup. Was so good I went back for 2 days and even ate the bowl. There are other stuff on the menu too, sandwich and what not. But I went specifically for the chowder and it did not disappoint. But bear in mind theres lots of pigeons outside waiting to take scraps off the floor, and they poop around randomly

You may sit inside and outside here. Also some tables have view on a bay with sea lions :) Fast service and good red chowder (with tomato pasta). Clam chowder is just ok not so tasty like in Boudin…
I was disappointed that the fish and chips were under-seasoned and tasted quite bland. I even had to add salt, pepper, and some hot sauce just to be able to finish the dish.
Went there after the Alcatraz night tour. I wanted something comforting and warm, but not too filling so I could sleep at night. This was fulfilled by the chowder. Thanks for the restaurant to be open so late :) Taste wise, it could be improved but I think this is a fast food type of chowder so I don't expect much. The bread was a bit chewy (maybe it's crispier in the morning) but the filling was comforting. Inside is very fast food like, all in plastic and looks low quality, but then again I don't think it has higher standard Paid 16,28 dollars with tax for it.
Food: Bread Bowl: the sour bread balances the salty chowder Fried Seafood: very nicely done; fish, shrimp, fries and calamari are all included. Their tartar sauce is not too sour or salty 👌 Shrimp Louie Louie: not very recommended if you’re not a salad person but the shrimps are fresh! Service: no tip needed, self service The speed to serve is pretty quick even during long weekend holidays. Ambience: the seats are pretty crowded, so if you’re here to grab a bite, there’s no issue, but if you’d like to have a nice place to chill, there are plenty of other choices around the area.
Average, it used to be much better. The chowder is salty, the red chowder even saltier. Another tourist trap on Pier 39. Fried vegetables are ok.

Tasty? Just not as good as expected. Wanted to enjoy sitting dockside with great seafood. We got fish and chips plus chowder w/o the bread bowl.
Supposed to be the best chowder in sourdough bowl. Surly service and not particularly good chowder. Go to Bubba Gump for good chowder and spectacular view across the bay.

Chowders on Pier 39: The Wharf's Classic (and Quirky) Bowl
You're strolling along San Francisco's bustling Pier 39, the sea air nipping at your cheeks, and inevitably, your thoughts turn to one thing: a warm bowl of clam chowder. Right there, among the clamor and the sea lions, sits Chowders, a spot that practically defines the 'Fisherman's Wharf experience.' Pier 39's Chowders: A Dive into Seafood, Salt, and Surprises
You know Pier 39. It's bustling, it’s vibrant, and sometimes, it gets a bad rap for being, well, a little too touristy. But tucked amidst the clamor, there’s Chowders, a spot that often sparks conversation among locals and visitors alike. I recently dropped by to see what all the fuss was about, and it turns out, there’s more to this seafood joint than meets the eye – or the sometimes-skeptical local.First off, let’s talk service. More than one person mentioned the staff here being incredibly
