Opinions de Thailand Restaurant Alameda
Amazing Laotian restaurant. The food really is great and authentic, reminds me of when I went to Laos years ago. Definitely get the tapioca balls Sakoo they're a must. I recommend going when it's not busy as the acoustic of the place is not the best and gets really loud inside.
I came here with my dad for a quick lunch. We tried to share an entree and 2 appetizers. The food was great, delicious, and plenty enough! Now we’ve got some tasty leftovers for dinner! I recommend 100% the spring rolls with the best peanut sauce I’ve tried and the Nam Pao (crispy rice).
My culinary adventure at this Thai Lao restaurant at Bhan Mar Vane was an absolute delight! The Mok Pla, a Basa fish infused with aromatic herbs and wrapped in banana leaves, was a flavor explosion that transported me straight to Southeast Asia. The Nam Khao, a crispy rice salad paired with preserved pork sausage, was a textural masterpiece – crunchy, savory, and perfectly balanced. The Sai Oua, a spicy pork sausage infused with herbs, added a kick to the meal that I thoroughly enjoyed. Each dish showcased the authentic and vibrant flavors of Thai Lao cuisine. If you're a food enthusiast, this restaurant is a must-visit for a memorable journey through deliciousness!
I'm Laotian, so I'm super picky when it comes to eating at Lao restaurants. It's all about authenticity for me, and hands down, Bhan Mae Vane surpassed all expectations! The flavors and textures of every single dish was exceptional and the quality of the food is what you would find at a traditional Lao wedding or Ceremonial event. The bay area is so lucky to have this special place to eat authentic Laotian food. What a gem! I cannot wait to come back and eat!
This review is only written as a response to Jeremy Keller's review. Jeremy, your review was so unbelievably offensive to me that I literally felt compelled to write this statement. You are, indeed, almost indescribably entitled and obnoxious to expect to be able to literally return a dish because you don't like it. Are you a baby? Do you think that when you don't like the dish the ingredients just disassemble themselves and floback into the kitchen so that the restaurant doesn't have to absorb any expense? I hope you know that I, and everyone who read your review, scorns your actions.
Best Thai food in the bay. Rain or shine we are there. At least once a week. Everyone is friendly and remember my kids and their picky order. Feels like going over to your aunty house for dinner
Picked up some takeout and yum, yum, yum! So happy this place makes rawb beef laab. It was a little salty but still delicious. The papaya salad was goooood - nice and juicy and flavorful. The nam khao was great too. Dishes may seem pricey but they're pretty good portions. I'm definitely returning to try other dishes here!
We had a party of 7 and ordered a mountain of food. The service was amazingly quick. We didn't have to wait long and before I knew it, all our food was at the table! The food that they served here is as authentic as it can be, if you are looking for lao/thai food. However, the Thai tea was a little too sweet for my taste, but overall would recommend. To be honest, we ordered way more food than the provided pictures, but I was too eager to eat!
We were there on a rainy Sunday so there several tables open and we got seated right away. Even though it was not packed, the noise level was really loud from conversations. We had to raise our voices to be heard in our table of four. They should consider installing some sound tiles to absorb some of the noise. None the less, the food was fresh, flavorful, and presentation was pleasing to the eye.
What a wonderful restaurant! My Dad and I went in for my birthday dinner. The staff is so amazing and so nice. We asked about a few things and for recommendations and everything we ate we said, oh WOW! Delicious. It is a family business and you can really see and taste how much love and care goes into their food. I can’t wait to go back. Thanks to our lovely servers who were so thoughtful and wished me a happy birthday at the end of the evening!
Portions are HUGE! Came here my myself and got two things and was surprised by the size when they came. Khao soy ($18) was good. Fresh noodles were soft and not overcooked. Flavor was good without being too salty. Fried clear rice roll wraps ($18) were crispy and tasty. I’ve had a hard time finding these in other restaurants. Love that it comes with lettuce and fresh herbs to balance it out. Would definitely come back to try their other items, but recommend coming with friends to share the large portions.
Great place to get some real lao food. We ordered way to much food, but wanted to try a few dishes. The pork belly was very good. The papaya salad was also good. This seems to be one of those dishes that can be made such that certain flavors out stand the others and some people prefer certain flavors. I noticed that this did not have the crab flavor stand out so much, but it have a deep savory flavor that was yummy. The egg roll and lettuce wrap were also very good. Highly recommended.
In Sunnyvale on a business trip and we were looking for Lao food and there is really nothing here. Had to make the drive to Oakland to get our Lao food fix. It was worth getting stuck in traffic to come to this place. When I was walking to the restroom I saw Ma pah(grand ma) working the kitchen and I knew the food was going to be good. All the food we ordered was great. Might have over ordered for 3 people but it's good to have left overs. If I'm ever in the area again I would definitely come back.
We were the first to be seated for dinner. The restaurant ambiance is nice. I loved the lanterns overhead. We've eaten the food plenty of times but it was our first time dining in. We ordered the Sakoo, Laab Seen, Crispy Pork Belly, and Nam Khao. We haven't had a dish we did not love. The food is fresh, well seasoned, and abundant. The price is average. There's a baby changing table in the women's restroom, which is a single stall. The parking is street, metered on Webster and no metered in the neighborhood.
BMV was SO good! I haven’t had nam khao in years and i was so excited when I saw that it was on the menu here. I had only had it twice before but this was by far the best nam khao I’ve ever had. Huge portion too! So tasty, crispy, slightly spicy and well balanced. I would come back just for that dish! 😋 The pad see ew was also exceptional, super fresh and the noodles were so tender. Shrimp in a blanket was a delicious appetizer and perfectly cooked. This spot was awesome, I can see why it was so busy. Service was excellent and it felt very clean inside. Lighting was a little harsh but not a big deal at all, I’d still come back for that nam khao 🫡
Absolutely stunning. I think this may be the best Laotian/Thai restaurant in the Bay Area. If you're in the mood Laotian/Thai, and in the mood for something special, stop reading and just go to Bhan Mae Vane (BMV). The food is authentic, flavorful, and simply heavenly. If you've never been, try the Sakoo. These are chewy taro balls with savory meat - sort of like a mochi ball with meat. This will blow you away. The chew into this ball will literally open your eyes, both literally and figuratively. The larbs are also wonderful. Fresh mint, onion, scallions, fish sauce and we had chicken meat. Again, they open up a difference sense of harmony in your mouth. Marry this with a clean crisp lager and once again, you're glad you're sitting at BMV. The crispy pork belly was a bit of a disappointment, just because we were so astonished by everything we tasted. It was really crisp, but had no flavor. And with the thickness of the meat, we would've appreciated some type of marination. Pad Thai was again a smash hit, without saying. Chicken Satays also very tender with thick peanut sauce. With the super friendly staff, and an unassuming interior that stays focused on food and service (it feels a bit like an upscale food hall), you have one of the best restaurants in the Bay Area. I do live far away from Alameda. But BMV will be a staple for me.
In my 2024 opinion, best Laotian Cuisine in Alameda! Bhan Mae Vane is our go-to restaurant for excellent Lao-style som tum (papaya salad) and other tasty Laotian/Thai dishes like Nam Khao, Sakoo, Mok Pla, among many others. We have not had any ‘meh’ dishes here, everything is well-made, fresh, and excellent. Note that their portions are quite generous and the wait can be long, especially during the weekend dinner rush. Allow the restaurant and their delightful staff some patience and you will be rewarded with hearty dishes.
The first time I came here was months ago for my cousins graduation. Food was sooooooo good I had to brag about it to my mom. So we decided to order take out! When it go home, the food was as amazing as the first time I tried it! OH MY GOODNESS EVERYTHING WAS DEVINE!!! Every dish has its own great flavor. If you haven’t been, this is a must go to restaurant. Staff here are all amazing and so nice! Parking is definitely not easy and if you come at 2nd half opening which is 5p, just know you have to wait a bit because the kitchen/ restaurant is just reopening. The restaurant itself is very warm and welcoming and nicely decorated.
This place came as a recommendation. I came here with my team and we all agreed. The food here is amazing. The beef short ribs were my favorite. We also had the pineapple fried rice, string beans, spicy wings and the garlic noodles. All fire 🔥! They're not open Mondays and thats the day we do team lunches usually so we finally had a chance to come here after Presidents Day. Hope to come again soon.
Wonderful Laos spot in Alameda. To simplify things, I would recommend getting the Papaya Platter. It comes with a lot of food with your choice of either Thai Papaya Salad or Lao Papaya Salad. The difference between the two can be better described the staff but what I got from it is Thai is spicier and Laos is fishier. We went with Thai and it was really good and spicy. With the platter you get 3 selections of meats. We went with the Laos sausage, pork belly and jerky. In that order, that is what I would rank it. The Laos sausage was flavorful but could’ve been more spicy. The pork belly was soft and crunchy at the same time. The jerky was a bit tough but it had a great taste to it. I would love to come back here and try other dishes. I enjoyed it a lot !
Hosted a work dinner here for my team and wow! We did family style and everyone picked a dish. Every single one of them was amazing! The crab fried rice and eggplant entree were my favorites. Curry was a bit on the sweet side but it had great flavors. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. We also had brought a nice bottle of Chardonnay that we were able to open for a $20 corkage fee. I will definitely return!
Big portions, and the food was very good. The dishes were a little less sour than other Laotian restaurants I've been to, which I kind of missed, but I don't know enough about the cuisine to comment if that's typical variation. Some dishes were new to me and very fun to try!
Tried this place on a random Saturday night for dinner. They were pretty busy but the service was great. The food was tasty but the only thing is I wish our dish had more protein in it. Other than that the presentation was really cute and had good flavor over all. Plates are shareable sizes so it’s more of a family style type of dinning.
Bhan Mae Vane managed to do the impossible of reeling us back to Laos with its vibrant use of fresh herbs, bold heat, and wild flavors. Each dish is a sensory journey through lush highlands, royal palaces, and rustic charm of village home cooking. My favorites included the Yellow Curry with Shrimp, seafood salad (Lao’s spicy), Nam Khao, and Chicken Fried Rice. The earthy richness and the warming spices of the Yellow Curry is an absolute standout— it immediately brought me back to grandma's dinner table, where love and warmth is felt through every bite.
We visited BMV on a Saturday evening for a casual dinner date night. Thai is my favorite cuisine, but with being a vegetarian come some restrictions with how food is prepared and can be made equally tasty, so we were nervous. But to my surprise, everything was just right. The flavors, spices, consistency and taste - excellent! We ordered spicy fried rice, pad kee mao, egg rolls and string beans and tofu and they were all great! Service was slightly busy, but we were attended with a big smile, always. Such great ambience, and I LOVE the YELLOW door!
The dining area is spacious, creating a relaxed atmosphere. Staff is friendly and welcoming, always wearing a smile and attentive to assist without avoiding eye contact. The food was delicious and generous. We got mok pla, chicken fried rice and an iced Thai tea. The portion sizes were huge and satisfying. They even paired the fried rice with spicy sauce and fish sauce, tailored to your preference, elevating the dish to another level. So good! I would love to try out some other dishes on the menu if given the chance to go again.
Food is amazing. Good portions. I loved the nam khao the most. Incredible blend of spice and crunch and umami and crispy and salty. Could eat this all day. Sakoo was so great too. Loved the tapioca texture. Everything hit. Only complaint on the food was that the lettuce wraps were watery. I usually don’t comment on this but a weird thing about place is the the way sound bounces off the walls toward the center of the dining area. It makes the room very loud even without any music.
Finally had a moment to dine in the restaurant. We've only ever done take-out. Food here was amazing! Only gripe is that our table wasn't offered the chili sauces in the orange containers. One of the dishes I ordered (saloon) usually comes with chili oil when we order take-out. Upon asking for some spice I was told the dish was already seasoned and they don't add anything else. Was really missing the spice level even with the fried red peppers that did come with the dish. Aside from that every dish we had was amazing. My kids tried everything that came out. Favorites from the kids were the angel wings and garlic noodles. I enjoyed every single dish. Probably not a place I would recommend on a busy Friday night if you're looking for something intimate. It was very loud inside. Actually refreshing to me so the kids didn't have to be super quiet. Very family friendly. Many people with kids were enjoying dining. Services and servers were on top of everything. Definitely a place we will be visiting again and often.
Really delicious high quality food! We missed out on the fresh spring rolls because the kitchen was backed up. But nice to know there's more to look forward to next time. Nice wine menu. Lovely staff as well :)

i brought friends to this restaurant for dinner and they raved for it. i actually. tried new dishes too and was happily surprised! khao Soy - Lao style beef soup has a flavorful broth sakoo - was a hit! chewy handmade tapioca steamed balls w minced meat flavorful and soft filling! my fav dish! mah pla - cream steamed in banana leaf w herbs like dill and lemongrass. had a side of spicy fish paste. my new favorite comforting fish dish! eggplant stir fry- not too greasy! just perfect! the only feedback. I hope in the future my vegetarian friend can order a vegetarian option soup from them. thanks so much! she raved about her papaya salad and eggplant dish!
I'll start by acknowledging that we arrived just before their dinner rush. Though, I would think they'd have some practice. Food: Overall, we enjoyed the flavors. The Angel Wings are kid-friendly, not spicy, a little sweet and crispy. I had the Khao Soy. Very good, I would have liked it to be spicier, like Thai spice. The hibiscus tea and the green tea are tasty but too sweet (which is great for the kids. Service: As mentioned before it was their dinner rush. Our server didn't write down our order, which had her come back to ask again. I didn't receive our side of rice that we wanted during our meal. Also, as soon as food was dropped, it was nearly impossible to get the attention of any of the wait staff. Couldn't ask for chili for my soup, and, when finished, it took 10 min to ask for boxes and the check. All servers were very flustered and didn't acknowledge the delay in service nor apologized for mistakes. I liked the food enough to return, though i will do so during a less busy time.
Delicious food, but service was hit or miss. Our group of 7 arrived a little after 5 pm on a Sunday evening and were promptly seated. The staff was quick with water, hot tea, and settings. Our order consisted of the following: Shrimp in a Blanket Sakoo Nam Kao Chicken Yellow Curry Chicken Pad Se Ew Beef Pad Mak Kuer BBQ Pork Ribs Everything was absolutely delicious and presented beautifully. However, the restaurant began to fill up quickly, so the staff was extremely busy. That is when service began to suffer. For example, we ordered a large steamed rice to accompany our yellow curry, but we weren't given rice until 20 minutes after the curry was served. In fact, we had to flag down someone to remind them about our rice. By then, the curry had cooled down. We also had to flag servers down for water and tea refills. The food is fantastic, and we will definitely be back. I just hope for better service next time.
Well-lit restaurant, instantly welcomed by staff and seated immediately. We ordered the fried pork belly and the appetizer sampler that had egg rolls, shrimp egg rolls and fried tofu with sauces, and a papaya salad. Food came quickly and it was all delicious. We made friends with the couple next to us because they had a dish that looked interesting and appetizing. My dinner date asked me what was missing from the overall experience. We both thought that some music would complete the overall experience, either some Lao or Thai music would be perfect. Definitely will be back to try their other dishes.
I have high expectation of what the food would taste like based on an ad my Mother saw on Facebook. We ordered four dishes, two were great and two were barely average IMO. The crispy spring roll and a short ribs weee excellent. Our favorite was crispy spring roll and is a must-have. My son could have eaten it all by himself, he said. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Rad Na and crab fried. The Rad na was sweet and the restaurant does not have vinegar (น้ำพริกน้ำส้ม) even though they’re selling Thai food. That was a big disappointment because that is my mom’s favorite and we came here specifically to eat that. The crab fried rice could be better with the wok being hotter. There is no “wok burn” smell, for all those that know how fried rice should be made. Uncle Roger would have given it a two out of five. The waitresses were very nice and quick. The restaurant was clean and well decorated. Overall, it’s an ok experience. I wish I could love it more. If the restaurant owner reads this, I suggest the rice rice you also have a green pickle, jalapeño in vinegar sauce available to serve. And make sure the wok is hot before smashing rice. That’s how a Thai person would eat Thai food.
We came here for an afterwork dinner gathering with a group of 12, and made a reservation ahead of time. When we arrived, we were seated quickly. We ordered a bunch of dishes, so I'll review the ones that I remember. I had the Pad Se Ew, Pad Thai, Angel Wings, Spicy Wings, Tom Kha, and the BMV Ultimate Papaya Platter. Pad Se Ew, the fried flat wide rice noodles with black soy sauce, broccoli, and eggs. I really liked the flavor, and the noodle texture was to my liking. Pad Thai, the fried thin rice noodles with tamarind sauce, tofu, eggs, and bean sprouts. Unlike Pad Se Ew, this dish felt a bit mediocre, the flavor was pretty bland. Both Angel Wings and Spicy Wings tasted great; the crunch and seasoning were spot on. Tom Kha, a coconut soup with lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and fresh mushrooms, chicken or shrimp. Really creamy and delicious. The BMV Ultimate Papaya Platter came with papaya salad, pork rinds, noodles, cabbage, and sticky rice. You can choose up to 3 proteins and a type of papaya salad, like Thai or Lao. We had the Thai Papaya salad with 2 crispy pork and angel wings. The papaya salad was really fragrant and paired well with the crispy pork, which helped cleanse the palate. The crispy pork had a strong umami flavor, with the rich fattiness of the meat itself. You could smell the roasted meat and rendered fat. aroma. Also, their Thai Iced Green Tea and Beerlao are worth a try!
Wait: Came with some friends for lunch, short 10min wait for a Saturday at 1pm. (Important note: your entire party needs to be there when called or they’ll give the table to other parties present. Some of us went to the comic store two doors down while our table was called and our table was given to another party. But it was just a short wait while they prepped another table. Just FYI) Atmosphere: was great, spacious interior (tables are well-spaced), staff was attentive, and overall vibes were good. Food & drinks: had Thai ice tea and green ice tea, I’d personally recommend the green milk tea!! As for the food, appetisers - we ordered fried clear spring rolls and angel wings. Pretty good, crispy and savory! Mains: we ordered yellow curry, pineapple khao pad and khao soy. All 3 mains were not bad, didn’t feel like “wasted-calories” kind of meal! The portions are huge!! So value for money, as a San Franciscan. Worth trying: green ice tea, fried spring rolls. Would come back again if I was in the area.
Khao soy was not good. There wasn't much curry flavor. Still giving 4 stars since it's hard to judge a place with only one dish.
This was a great local Lao/Thai restaurant that was super tasty and I want to return! The Thai Iced Green Tea is slightly different than the traditional Thai Iced Tea and it was refreshing. I ordered the Yum Talay and it was good, the Sai Oua was very tasty with textures because it is fried, and the Mok Pla was tasty too. Very good food and I highly recommend it. I'll be returning to try more items on the menu!
This vibrant Lao eatery has become a favorite spot for my family and me, offering bold flavors that resonate with our Filipino palates. The liberal use of fish sauce in their dishes creates a delightful umami-rich experience. Standout dishes: 1. Pad See Ew Beef: Perfectly balanced savory notes complement the soft, wide rice noodles. It's not overly sweet, allowing the flavors to shine. 2. Crispy Eggrolls: Served with fresh veggies and herbs for wrapping, these crunchy rolls are elevated by the accompanying dipping sauce. Pros: - Quick, attentive service - Accommodating of dietary restrictions (gluten-free options available) - Authentic Lao cuisine Cons: - The space gets quite noisy when busy - Parking can be challenging The restaurant tends to be packed during dinner hours, which contributes to a somewhat loud atmosphere. The high ceilings, while visually appealing, do amplify the noise. One unexpected touch is the single TV in the dining area, which adds a casual element to the ambiance. During our last visit, it was showing the Olympics. Overall, this place offers a solid dining experience with excellent Lao cuisine. If you can manage the occasionally hectic atmosphere and potential parking issues, you'll be rewarded with flavorful dishes and efficient service. It's a worthy destination for those seeking authentic Lao flavors in a lively setting.

Decent food, odd that they didn't provide a spoon with the fork to eat with. The thai basil fish (pla pad krapow) barely had any basil in it. Beer was tasty, but would skip this place if we're ever in the area again. The wait staff barely stopped by. California law (AB 1732) requires all single-stall, single-user restrooms in businesses, public places, and government buildings to be designated as all-gender (gender-neutral), but their single stall bathrooms were marked for men and women, which led to a line in the small hallway for the women's room and no line for men's. The atmosphere was very clinical and there wasn't much personality or comfort.

The food quality is good. I could clearly and straightly feel the cost and how much time the cookers spend on the food. Therefore, I was willing to pay 18% tips to appreciate the cookers and dishwashers. Otherwise, I would just pay 10%. The only one thing that I hate was all the waitresses including boss were disordered and confused but they felt they worked so hard. For example, more than three workers to call the waitlist, discussed at the front desk once one of them missed customers. For instance, almost everyone checked the same to go order and discussed at the front desk once. Today is a friday. I can understand how busy the business is. However, there were around 5 waitresses just walked around to pretend to be busy and worked disorderly. And, it led us wait over 20 minutes to get the first dish. All of the service at this restaurant were terrible.
Unfortunately our meal here was below expectation. The sliced beef in the Larb Seen salad was so tough that it was hard to enjoy this dish at all. Sakoo (tapioca balls stuffed with ground pork) was good though. Their version of Thai Iced Green Tea was my least favorite out of all the versions of this drink I've tried. Overall, we'll give this place one more shot but not for some time.
