Good food, good beer, friendly service. Perfect pub.
I've visited The Great Northern a couple of times and really enjoyed myself on both occasions. A decent selection of beers, good atmosphere and the staff are very friendly and welcoming.
Very busy pub, the service was a little slow but worth the wait, the food was freshly cooked (lamp shank) and was fantastic.
Been here many times but only just tried their food. Sunday roast is great. Excellent service. No parking on site by car parks near by.
Such a lovely place . Great, very tasty and homemade Sunday roast. Very friendly staff. It would be my place for Sunday roast if lived in the area.
Never eaten here, which is a shame, it always looks and smells good. Staff are lovely, dog friendly, the ales are great, always a good vibe!
First visit to the GN for a while, and it was very good. Sunday lunch was delicious!! The staff were fantastic, the atmosphere was so much improved, it was cosy and welcoming. Highly recommended!
Absolutely wonderful, the staff was lovely! They're quite flexible when it comes to ordering food since when their kitchen closes you're allowed to order food for delivery and bring it inside the premises.
Excellent service and friendly staff, and food was outstanding! Ordered popcorn chicken, hot wings and the baked camembert - honestly exceeded expectations. 10/10
Lovely cozy place with great pub food and service with a smile. Great for lunch or to hang out with a pint and friends.
Great food and excellent beer at a reasonable price, served by very friendly staff. One of the best pubs I've visited.
Great pub with a wide selection of drinks on tap and in the fridges. Great staff who are welcoming and knowledgeable, and the outside area is a gem
Really nice place. Proper drinks, good service, great food and a nice pub garden. The food is a bit classier than a normal place.
Very nice pub, with very friendly staff
Lovely pub run by great people. Fabulous selection of beers, wines + gins and the food is definitely worth a try.
Good pint, not been in here before on previous trips to St Albans but would definitely return for a few more beers.
Great pub, super choice of beers / food, nice atmosphere wonderful staff and a garden!
Great place. First time I've been in there for a while and bar staff were very friendly and like a chat. Good crowd
Great menu (changes every day) good selection of beers, wines etc all at a great price. Really friendly service too
Good beers and great atmosphere, friendly staff. Highly recommended
Rang to get last table for 2 for Sunday Roast lunch..great beers.good wine.. Roast was just like ya mum made..all fresh heritage veg. Massive Yorkshire. Delicious and piping hot... thank you.....
There are many positives here, not least the transformation of a sleepy failing pub into a popular and interesting social hub. Extensive wine list, fabulous range of beers and frequent events in the pub and sunny garden. Friendly and knowledge staff. Pop in before going to the Odyssey Cinema or make an evening of it.
I like eating dishes that I couldn't (I'm no chef) or wouldn't cook for myself, and ideally have something different. The consistently excellent Great Northern gastropub in St Albans, has a changing menu that does this! Difficult choosing between 3 dishes I fancied. This pave of venison, croquette, runner bean, and kohlrabi dish was delicious. I had it with handcut chips and an excellent pint of the award winning Heavy Industry's 77, IPA. Nice atmosphere, good beer garden and great staff! It's becoming a favourite!
Great selection of beers and high quality food and exceptional service. Nice atmosphere on a Saturday night.
First time here as a newby to St Albans. So impressed and we were looked after really well. Everyone there couldn’t do enough for us and were so friendly and chatty despite clearly being rushed off their feet. Great food / drinks. Highly recommend. Can’t wait to visit again.
Fantastic Sunday dinner, great service and a good range of ale. The pub I spent years avoiding like the plague is under new management (OK, not that new anymore) and is now one of the best little pubs in St Albans. Definately worth checking, especially if you're pre / post cinema.
Cozy pub, delicious food and great customer service- staff were extremely helpful. Our Sunday lunch was absolutely delightful.
An amazing proper pub now has an amazing chef to match... Harry (chef) has brought an unpretentious but modern menu to a relaxed and friendly pub. Finally a local pub in St Albans with food worthy of a wannabe foodie's palate.... proper lovely.
Really nice friendly pub. Very handy if you're going or have just been to the Odyssey as it's right next door. Nice outside area too.
Really nice local pub, close to the town. The beer selection is fantastic, the staff just amazing. Thank you for making new parents feel normal, xxx
Great friendly pub, Sunday Roasts are a fan favourite with generous portions especially the Yorkshire puddings, so definitely worth a visit if in the area.
Made the trip out from central London and it was well worth it. A relaxing atmosphere, very friendly staff, excellent choice of drinks (particularly good choice of gins) and very good food. I am already looking forward to the next visit.
Great independent pub, run by people who genuinely care about good old fashioned customer service. One of my favourite pubs in St. Albans (and there are a LOT of good pubs in St. Albans, so that is high praise from me).
Fantastic pub dogs got fussed all night, staff brilliant, beer spot on really enjoyed the evening.
One of the best pubs in St Albans- a city of great pubs. We went for the beer and cider festival, stayed for the wood fired pizza. Great staff, great food, great drink.
Excellent pub, the staff are very friendly and welcoming. There is a great choice of beer and real ales, and the spirit selection is quite extensive. Garden is surprisingly big!
Great after the cinema, warm and friendly staff. Great food, good selection of craft ales, the quiz is amazing on a Tuesday but the manager sherry has unreal knowledge of the times and being of take that.
Really great pub with good beers and one of the best roasts around! Staff are also all lovely and great with kids!
Great pub with fantastic staff. If you haven't been, you're missing one of St Alban's best.
Lovely place. Friendly staff. Great beer garden. Immediately welcoming. Looking forward to spending my summer here with my beautiful gf. X
Fantastic pub. Friendly staff and good selection of beers. Has a beer festival and BBQ food during the summer. Great for a summer beer in the afternoon. Good food too.
One of the best pubs I've been to in England! They have amazing gluten free knowledge- including gluten free sunday roasts and yorkshire puddings! The service was extremely friendly and they were always trying to improve your experience. The outdoor seating area is lovely on a sunny day and they have umbrellas if it's too sunny. The food and drinks are also very well priced!
Wanted to join a pub quizz spontaneously tonight with my partner and it was quite tough to find a quiz around the area on a tuesday night. When calling this pub to check if they had one on, the person on the phone (sorry not sure who I spoke to) delivered a great customer service, was friendly and professional. When coming to the pub, we received a warm welcome by Sarah and she delivered an excellent service from the beginning. So did Ruby and the Italian lady. So thanks to you three! Joined the pub quizz hosted by Pete which was fab and will join again soon. The crowd had a nice vibe. The pub is cute, cosy and typically english looking which I love. The toilets were cleaned too👌🏻. We ordered food which was ok. Happy to discuss feedback directly with the team if they wish. Anyway, thank you all and we will be back!
A worthwhile find whilst visiting St Albans. Booked a table for two at 5:15 on a Friday, and so glad we did. Very welcoming on arrival and excellent service. Our visit coincided with a Beer Festival with Real Ale (and cider) at £2 a half pint. Food was freshly cooked and tasted great for pub fayre. It was the friendly welcome that made such a difference, and this was reflected I the number of tables reserved when we arrived. A popular place to visit.
Super cosy, the staff gave such a family feel. My dog and bubba felt so welcomed and well attended to. A gem of a pub
Just had Sunday lunch here ...what an amazing place.. Amazing food great staff and lovely pub. Highly recommend
Fantastic roast had here on Sunday! Very generous portion size, super friendly staff and lovely venue! Will definitely visit again when back in St Albans!
Accommodated a big group including kids at short notice and fed us all save for our late and hungry mate Paul. Will be back again.
Booked a table for Sunday lunch at 14:15, arrived early on the off chance they could seat us earlier and they were able to accommodate which was great. Food was delicious and service was top notch. Will certainly be coming again.
Thank you to Sarah for going the extra mile to give me a special birthday. She was lovely! Also has the best shot glass display I’ve ever seen
Great food and beer at wallet-safe prices! Decent selection of ales. Tasty food. Vibrant atmosphere. And super lovely staff.
New owners have done a great job renovating this fun, friendly pub which I've been to a few times recently. Great atmosphere - love the pub quiz on a Tuesday. Fantastic food and wine selection. Love the new-look beer garden!!
Brilliant. Great food. Fantastic staff. Lively atmosphere. Shame I don't live nearer.
Being a veggie I'm not always a fan of pub food. But this place isn't pub food. I had halloumi in cider batter with some amazing vegetables in a cheese sauce. I will be eating there again soon. The beer was well kept and with a big range from local breweries. Great to see a local bar doing what they do at such a high standard.
My go to for fun, food and good booze! Such a fantastic beer garden that is hidden away - you wouldn’t think you’d find a little slice of paradise off London road but it’s there! The beer selection is wicked, the food is outstanding and the staff are just unbeatable. I personally loved the wide selection of ‘sharers/starters’ available - really great for bigger groups to eat without all ordering a main. My friends were overwhelmingly happy with the selection of IPAs, APAs, bitters and lagers available. But what stands out the most at the GN is the staff. It’s clear that they have a great team, almost family like, who prioritise customer care before all else. And they do so very successfully. I cannot recommend enough - it’s 11/10 for me!
The food here is always fantastic. We eat here regularly and have never had a bad meal. The red wine gravy with their Sunday roast is a highlight and you always get plenty of it with your meal! It's also great for any dietary requirements with lots of gluten free and dairy free options. The staff are also fantastic and can't do enough for you.
Friday 6th February 2026 Tonigbt i drank in this really busy wooden floored pub with small room and great charachter There was a beautiful choice of hand pulled ales on great staff buisy working away teally pleasurable people dring good real ales in here This pjb is a propper British real ale pub Keep up the good work all onvolved with the pub
We had our Christmas party and it was great - in particular Cici was especially great - thank you ! Kevin - Herts Trees and Gardens
A brilliant pub - fantastic food and amazing value. Wonderful staff
We popped in here for a drink for a friend’s birthday and the staff were so lovely, helpful and welcoming.
Our Christmas Eve meal was fabulous! The best atmosphere and food was divine! Cecilia exceptional customer service. We are blessed to be local. Highly highly recommend
Good selection of ales, food looked good, bustling atmosphere.
A great experience! Met up with some friends in the area, we needed somewhere dog friendly and allergen friendly and The Great Northern Pub was both! As someone who observed a gluten free diet it can be tricky to eat out, but GBPK had great knowledge of allergies and made me feel that my food was completely safe. The staff are friendly and welcoming, if I am ever in the area again I will be returning!
Hands down the best pub in St Albans. The staff are delightful and it just has the warmest and friendliest atmosphere. Shout out to Andrew for being the best bartender X
It's such a pleasure coming to this pub. From the very first time I popped in in 2018, to today, it has continued to be incredibly welcoming. There's a brilliant selection of rotating ales, good lagers and ciders and a brilliant menu of food. I love sitting outside in the renovated garden in the summer too. Also, Pete puts on the best pub quiz I've ever attended every Tuesday evening. Friendliest bar staff out there as well! Such a pleasure to be a customer of this pub!
Really enjoyed my stop at Great Northern Pub & Kitchen. Warm atmosphere, relaxed service, and food that’s genuinely well made. It’s the kind of place that feels immediately familiar — cosy lighting, good plates, and no unnecessary fuss. Ideal for a quick solo dinner while you wait for your trains or catching up with friends. Would happily come back.
Such kind staff that go above and beyond to make you happy. Deffo coming back! Sarah was so amazing.
Nice beer, good good, good prices, very friendly and helpful staff. Thanks!
Have come here a few times, it's a lovely local pub. They often have live music on. Last time we were served by Sarah who is super friendly, she stayed and chatted with us and gave us great food and drink recommendations.
Very good food and beers, good garden space including outside sheltered area (the dog house). Dog friendly. Quiz every Tuesday evening which is both popular and great fun.
Lovely atmosphere on Friday night, with the team managing the current situation very well and keeping the balance between an enjoyable experience and maintaining a safe environment. Good food!
Good selection of beers and good pub quiz on a Tuesday. Food is nice but not a massive selection (although as of July 2017 they.were advertising a new menu soon)
Small but good range of people. We had a quick drink before the cinema. Friendly staff, comfortable seats.
It's an okay pub with lots of choice....over £5 a pint!...still seems too much. Lots of people use it pre cinema. Food looks good but have never eaten there
Good range of beers on tap and pump and good quality food as well. Garden is a nice spot to while away a summer evening.
Lovely food..beautiful small surroundings..old fashioned pub modernised x Definitely worth a visit. Great beer garden. Amazing atmosphere. Fantastic staff. Great value and choice 👏 x
The Refurb is brilliant and the pub is very cosy and welcoming. Really good customer service and always a fantastic selection of Ales on offer. Only downside it's a bit on the pricey side. Still, Highly Recommended.
Helpful staff are on hand to help you choose food and drinks. This place does great mini beer festivals. If you're a campaign for real ale member, then you get a little discount off your real ale, so that's a bonus. There's a nice garden to relax in. The toilets need a bit of an improvement in general though
Very good St Albans Pub. 5 minutes walk away from the train station. Has good selection of real ales and craft beer. Very friendly and helpful staff is dog friendly nicely decorated interior with a reasonable size beer garden. Will recommend this pub.
Nice atmosphere with welcoming staff. They had a good selection of both real ale and lager and a comprehensive wine list. Although we didn't eat the food that was brought out looked fresh and well prepared and it'll be somewhere we'll go back to soon to try out.
We had an excellent takeaway Sunday lunch today. The rare roast beef was especially appreciated by my husband. The veg were tasty, the Yorkshire puds travelled well and there was plenty of delicious gravy. We will definitely order again.
Really good pub, ideally located next to The Odyssey, so great for catching up with friends and discussing the movies. Had Sunday Lunch here once and it was really good - up there with the best in St Albans. Friendly staff and good selection of ales. As others have said, the refurbishment was well done!
Decent food at a local pub. Decent beer too. Enjoyed our visit.
A Great pub to relax & take a moment in when needed. Lovely staff who are happy to accommodate your needs, with & variety of locals from different backgrounds to ponder life mysteries with. Great variety of ales, beers, ciders & convos
Nice little pub with a good selection of drinks. The food is well prepared and served with a smile. Very handy for a pre cinema meal.
Very cute bar but a nightmare for packing. Pub itself is very small but I can imagine could be quite cosy when not so busy. Average prices for drinks, toilets were clean.
Super reliable and friendly. You might not get a perfect craft beer selection here but it's still pretty good and the welcome is usually awesome
The food and drinks seem good. My low rating is caused by seeing a disabled person struggle down unguarded steps to the outside bar. With no supporting handrail he could easily have fallen.
Nice place, turned up for dinner, at 8pm staff told me kitchen was closed, could not even order for hungry kids. Bit strange on a Saturday night.
Took my father-in-law and mother-in-law here for father's day TOTALLY disappointing!!!!!!! For what you get the food is over priced and rubbish!! Now I like my Beef rare but NOT Blue !!! Mother-in-law and I had the roast beef , it was not only blue but as though as my old boot ! So we drew their attention to it and in about 30 seconds they brought out some more, not a replacement dinner just some more beef which I must admit, yet still blue was from a totally different join and was reasonable! My wife decided to have the home made Salmon fish cake salad, if you had a magnifying glass you MIGHT have found the salmon! As for the SALAD! Four lettuce leaves and 1 yes 1 cherry tomatoe!!!!!! My father-in-law, who's not too well decided to have just a starter of bbq spare ribes! They were NOT BBQ but more like Salt and Pepper with a very heavy influence of the pepper ! Anyway 4 drinks to start , bottle of wine wine and a glass of white , £101 !!!! Ok they did reduce the bill by £20 but we will NOT be going back and would definitely NOT recommended!!!!!! Totally ruined the day!!!!
A complete disregard and lack of tact/respect for customers personal experiences when staff were speaking out loud to each other across the bar whilst customers were respectfully waiting to be served. You may have noticed that there is an answer for every lower review on this site which may make sense of course. However, this review has nothing to do with the quality of food and drink. This is a staff respect to the public issue that needs to be improved and much more awareness of what they say out loud when serving the public especially when it is a personal subject/matter. If the response to this review is to ask what the subject or matter is then it will miss the point. Ultimately more tact and awareness would improve on the experience of this establishment.
Slightly disappointed after the new year. We used to come here pretty often. Menu has changed since the newest menus uploaded here on Google just a month ago. We tried to ring and book the table but no one picked up. Our usual calamari was replaced by squid that taste like it came straight from Iceland and salmon became rainbow trout. The lamb shank we ordered came lukewarm and the roasted veggies were anything but roasted, the carrots and parsnip was half cooked. The gravy came in a side container without a spout and has carrot chunks in it. The breaded chicken burger came more pan-fried than fried. Overall the food experience was pretty bad. Would have preferred if food stayed the same and prices increased slightly. [edit after the GN response] We didn’t ask for the food to come together, they didn’t come together either. The starters were done with by the time mains arrived. We asked if you guys would have a table available and asked if the food would make it before we have to hand over the table, your staff insisted it would be ok for us so we stayed. When I asked for the lamb - she said the kitchen won’t make it in time, but changed her mind. We wouldn’t have minded a “we’re full” or “sorry we can’t offer food because we’re too busy” than just low quality meals, we expected it to be full as we couldn’t manage to get a reservation as no one picked up the phone. Your staff was more than busy - she mentioned working her second shift of the day, she barely had time to pick up our dishes and we had to hand the table off really quickly because you have tight reservations for the tables, but if she actually went past us she would’ve seen me visibly disappointed and complaining about the food and writing this review as the food came. Generally, would’ve just preferred a “we’re too busy” instead of this passive aggressive response that avoided half of the issues which contributed to the subpar experience.
