Arthur's Tavern is a hidden gem, the quintessential jazz and blues sanctuary. The moment you walk in, you're enveloped in an intimate, electric ambiance that sets the perfect tone for an unforgettable evening. The music is extraordinary, each performance a soulful journey that resonates deeply with every listener. The staff at Arthur's are nothing short of perfect. From the welcoming doorman to the friendly bartender, every member of the team offers warm and attentive service that makes you feel right at home. Antonio's cocktails are divine, each one a handcrafted masterpiece that perfectly complements the vibrant atmosphere. This cozy and lively venue is a haven for music lovers, where every night feels like a special occasion. Arthur's Tavern is more than just a club—it's an experience that lingers long after the final note.
One of my favorite venues in the city. I've seen a variety of sets from ragtime to swing to jazz to soul, and every single one has been great. No cover, $15/person minimum at tables which is completely reasonable. Cash only, so come prepared or use the ATM in the basement (and bring some extra along to tip the band - no cover means they rely on tips). Really awesome staff - nice folks (with some hidden singing talents, too!). Drinks are pretty good, and the food is great (get the pretzel bites). I love the atmosphere and always have a great time listening to amazing music in a fun and intimate venue.
I came by recently on a Monday night. It was pretty full, even for a "slow" night, but we did manage to get a table without a reservation. (I would definitely make one if you're planning to visit at a busier time!) What a gem of a spot — no cover, and the band was awesome. Cocktails were delicious and reasonably priced, service was attentive and friendly. They are cash only — make sure you come prepared so you can just kick back and enjoy the great music and vibes. :)
Great atmosphere and music! CASH ONLY!! There’s an ATM somewhere inside. Tightly packed on a Thursday evening around 8:30. Only one person was serving tables, so very slow service, and even going up to the bar there was an over 10 min wait. Got the smoking revolver, which was awesome; the “smoke topper” was a nifty little wooden hat on my rocks glass that arrived fully smoldering and instantly made me feel like I was out in the woods around a campfire; it also made for a delicious drink :). I didn’t have any food so I can’t speak to that. Couple of excellent jazz bands played. I think you’re supposed to order $15 of food or drinks per person per set. One fancy cocktail is about $17 or $18.
Super fun Jazz club with top notch bands / musicians, and an excellent drinks selection.
Excellent little spot in the village. The house band are brilliant, drinks are reasonably priced and it’s close to all major subways. The perfect spot to hide from an afternoon of freezing winds and heavy snow!
Amazing bar. The waitress was incredible, she seemed to be alone on the floor but was attentive, responsive and very nice despite it being very busy. The music was great. Highly recommend.
Went here two evenings recently while visiting NYC. We had a great time. I'm no jazz expert, but I like it when there seems to be a rhyme or reason to the music. We were lucky both evenings, great jazz and atmosphere. There's two shows per evening, I think it's 6:30 and 9:30. No cover charge, but you are expected to order a couple of drinks , which is easy to do. Cash only.
Came here to see the Grove Street Stompers and do not regret it!! The band was amazing, they had brilliant sense of humour in between their songs and taught us a bit about their history. The bar is quite small but cosy. Very romantic if you are going with your partner. A bit expensive as you need to pay $15 per set for one drink so be prepared for that, although it is free entry. They got my drink order wrong but it was very noisy so easy mistake to make.
Great experience at Arthur’s. Music and drinks were great and we couldn’t have felt more welcomed!
Such a vibe! The drinks, the live performances..if you're a jazz enthusiast this place is a must visit!
Outstanding atmosphere and bartenders. Maybe the most approachable place for live jazz in the city. Have been here multiple times and it deserves more than 5 stars.
It is a very nice place, but the person who brings the drinks was not smiling, was strict, it was not pleasant.
Re-opened and under new ownership, Arthur’s Tavern is better than ever! Ya might want to complain that the dive bar formerly known as Arthur’s Tavern is gone (you miss the dusty decorations, hitting your head when you sat down along the wall, going into the creepy leaky bathroom…)… but once you go, you’ll be incredibly surprised that the spruced up jazz room now known as Arthur’s Tavern is alive, comfortable, clean and friendly(!!) and probably closer to the 1937 version of the original Arthur’s Tavern!! The regular Sunday night band (every Sunday since the 1980’s) The Creole Cookin’ Jazz band is back (7p-10p)! The Monday night band, The Grove Street Stompers (playing every Monday since the ‘60-‘70’s!) are also back, 7p-10p! I spent a lot of time in the pre-pandemic Arthur’s (my trombone-playing dad-in-law has played in the Sunday night band since the 80’s!) and being there last night (Sunday 5/1/22) for the first time since the re-opening (April 29, 2022) I can tell you, there’s nothing I miss of the old Arthur’s. The new owners did a magnificent job of renovation/restoration. If you do miss the old Arthur’s, check out the photos, on the new walls, of the old dive. Dixieland Trad Jazz is here!
This place is as cool as it gets! The music is incredible and so is the place itself!! A must stop in NYC!
A Manhattan must-see! Live jazz in a VERY cozy space. Front of house manager was determined to get us comfortable and taken care of. Had to play musical chairs a bit- but eventually had stage-front view and made the experience so memorable. Would avoid sitting in the back in a chair. Impossible to see anything but the back of someone’s head.
We were in New York for one night only and I’m so glad we did our research and chose to come here, it made our trip! No cover charge, $15 (i.e. a drink) minimum spend each — more than fair given that all the other places we looked at charged $35 and up plus minimum spend on drinks. Wonderful vibes all round! Stage Revolution band were incredible, and service was great. Loved that each of the floor/bar staff were introduced and applauded too — well-deserved :)))
What an incredible time. Great live music, great crowd. Excellent staff. I don't think you can ask for a better night in NYC than this. You should go and you will enjoy it.
Cannot say enough about this very special, lively jazz spot. It was the highlight of my trip. The music is eclectic and the bar staff are friendly, knowledgeable and funny.
It’s advisable to make a reservation if you want to make sure you’ll find a seat. Besides, you might not have to stay in line outside, which will save you a precious time. Nice venue to enjoy live music. You can feel the echoes of the forties and fifties around you while drinking, let’s say, a Brooklyn Lager and allowing yourself to be carried away by the enchantment of a kind of music that makes you travel through that time lost in the haze of black and white movies.
Arthur's Tavern in Greenwich Village exceeded my expectations and provided a fantastic jazz bar experience. After a fortuitous stumble, my partner and I discovered this hidden gem when the neighboring restaurant had a long wait. The live jazz band welcomed us with their captivating music as we ordered drinks from the inviting counter bar, which I consider to be the best seats in the house. The bartender, Justin, showcased his skills by crafting impeccable drinks and offering valuable recommendations for nearby eateries. Kudos to Justin for his excellent service! The ambiance was truly delightful, with the combination of live jazz, dark wood panel walls, photographs of jazz legends adorning exposed brick walls, and the gentle spotlight illuminating the space. I am eager to return for another jazzy date night in Greenwich Village.
Fantastic place in NYC if you like live music. No entry fee and high quality whiskeys and bourbons. Great times to be had here! Will be back !
No cover charge. You pay for what you drink and a good tip which I found well deserved. We did not have a reservation, so waited around 20-30 minutes outside until one band finished playing and some people left. Then the manager gave us a table next to the stage. The next band was great. We were washed over with some beautiful soul and blues. They just expect you to spend some money on drinks during the show. Prices are reasonable. Ignore the bad reviews. How are they supposed to make money to keep this music haven going otherwise? Thank you Arthur!!
WOW This is definitely the place to have some drinks in NYC. This performer will make you move. Great live music, Jazz but not limited to it - and it’s for free. Had a great time there and I would come back without a thought. Thank you Bobby Harden, E. J. Sharpe, Stew Cutler & friends - that was amazing performance.
Such a fun jazz club! We waited in line for probably 40min but it was so worth it. Great music, vibes, and martinis.
Great vibe but pretty tight venue. My boyfriend and I were sat at a table with strangers. Prepare to get cozy.
The musical acts here are great. Very small space and they do pack the seats in. Server was attentive and made sure we had drinks. Liked the music is much we stayed for the next act to staet and they were amazing. Will be a spot I check out every time I'm in the city.
Great place for Real New York City Jazz and it's influences in the contemporary music. The ambient is amazing and the service professional and friendly. If you come to NYC to visit or living, this is a must go. No cover, fair prices and in the middle of West side . Recommend it
Arthur's has changed. It's become well-organized and almost corporate. However, Arthur's is still a great place to enjoy cocktails and listen to live music. It might not be gritty and gruff, as in the past, but it's still fantastic. My wife and I attended a performance of Mimi and the Pod Brothers, and we had so much fun. Crowded with a friendly crowd, the server hustled between tables with seasoned experience. Go to Arthur's; you'll enjoy it.
Our experience was incredible. We waited about 15 minutes without a reservation. There is no cover to get into the bar. If you want a drink you have to spend a minimum 15$. The coktails and beer are all very good and worth it. It’s cash only at Arthur’s Tavern but they have an atm downstairs but I would recommend bringing cash with you beforehand. The live jazz was incredible they put on quite a show I will be going back. Very old school place supper welcoming and great service.
One of the best jazz bars in the city. You don't need to buy tickets like the other greats. There's a $15 minimum instead but that's worth it for the quality of music. The space is fantastic too. Make sure to tip the players.
Simply wonderful! No cover, no drink minimum- just a bit of a line and cash only. This is such an intimate and cozy venue, and the staff is so kind and accommodating. If you go here, just try to be respectful and give your attention to the artists while they're playing. Better for small groups of 2-3 as seating is limited, perfect spot for a date night.
If I am in NYC on a Monday night, I am at Arthur's to see the Grove Street Stompers. It is thought they are the longest running regular band in a venue in the history of the city, but that also means probably also the USA and potentially the World, having played here every Monday night since 1962 (with the exception of the funeral for JFK and Covid). The venue is sublime. The band is amazing. Dixieland can not die while such consumate musicians carry its legacy. Thank you again and again for allowing me to be a tiny part of this incredible history. See u again asap!!!
I’ve been coming to Arthur’s Tavern for 18+ years, and it’s still one of my favorite spots in the city. The space has a modern feel (post Covid reno) while still keeping the classic charm that makes it so special. There’s a $15 minimum per person, but it’s absolutely worth it when you consider the quality of the live music. There are always fantastic bands playing and the atmosphere is unbeatable. The service is impressively friendly too, especially given how busy they tend to be most nights. It’s the kind of place that feels both timeless and refreshed, a true West Village gem I’ll keep coming back to.
Awesome place for music and hanging out with friends! Seriously great time! One star down because I don’t quite understand how 7 drinks at $16 each could come up to $199 with tips…
Very fun. Good vibes. Reasonably priced drinks and food. We did have to stand out in the cold for an hour though, but the bouncer made sure we were entertained. Good experience overall.
Decided to check out Arthur’s Tavern after discovering Blue Note was price of ticket plus $20 minimum. It did not disappoint! Grove Street Stompers were performing as they do every Monday, and they were so talented and fun. It felt like I was transported to New Orleans, early 1900s! I ordered a sour whiskey - it was small, but tasted great. Tables are a minimum of $15 per person, and I’m unsure about minimum for bar seating. By the time the band started playing, the bar was almost full. I’m docking a star is because of unhygienic food handling. I saw what appeared to be the manager stick her bare, unwashed hands into the olive jar that was being used for drinks, to snack on some olives. Also, the bartender used his bare hands to put ice into the drink glasses and handed out drinks by touching the rims. Otherwise, this place rocks!
Old-school jazz is what I was looking for and what I found here. Welcoming people, sincere alchemy between musicians, well lit stage, not too noisy, this was great. Minus 1 star for the waitress who is not for the faint-hearted. Grab onto your almost-empty glass because it WILL be taken away to make you order another one, because of the mandatory 2 drinks per person per set. Not surprised because there are very clear signs about it, this is a business so it is understandable. Smoothing the bluntness would be appreciated. Would still recommend it 100% though!
It's a rainy Friday night, and you're hanging out in the West Village. It's been a stressful week, so you just want to relax with friends so you snag a table at Arthur's tavern and listen to some jazz and grab a few drinks before heading out to dinner or home. Ok that's not me, I was visiting the city for a few days and hanging out with my husband, but still, if I did live in the city, this is what I would do. Seating is tight so grab a spot at the bar or on the banquet if you can. Cocktails are good and service with one waitress was surprisingly fast. There are almost no food options which is fine, you don't come here to eat but enjoy a drink, hang out with whoever and listen to music.
The music is absolutely great there, so emotional. Cosy atmosphere, low lights. But - it gets reallllly crowded and tight. Waiters are sweet.:) Prices for drinks are super high though, in my hometown I could probably buy 3 wine bottles for the price of one glass of wine here, haha 😅But I get it, you don’t have to pay for entrance or concerts, so it is fair.:) Only con - it was quite cold there because they left front door open all the time (in october) and we had to sit in our jackets.
Amazing old music spot in west village. Took my mom here because we love jazz and it’s a historical spot. It is a tiny place and seating is limited but we lucked out because we got there earlier (8:30 pm) and were able to snag two spots. I think going here with a large group would be very difficult because you would probably be waiting outside for a while (they have a bouncer who keeps track of capacity. Cash only but ATM downstairs. I had one incident where a bartender broke a glass in front of me and it just broke all in front of me but they made me a new drink right away and apologized. Then I got splash with a lot of beer by one of the bartender and I think they felt bad so they took off a round of drinks which was nice. Stayed 2 hours, paid $54. Honestly their drink minimums are easy to meet in that time anyway so no complaints and since there was no cover we made sure to bring extra cash to put in the bucket the musicians bring around. All of the musicians were extremely talented and got to have their own solo moments displaying their skills—definitely the best jazz bar I’ve been to in the city up to this point. Be aware if you don’t drink alcohol, they don’t have sodas or anything on the menu, but they have mock tails that are priced the same as alcoholic drinks. Bathroom downstairs. Overall: this is a great place for 2-3 people if you love the classic New York jazz scene, don’t mind being squished in with a lot of other music lovers, and want to get the most bang for your buck. There are other good jazz places but Arthur’s is set apart by the talent they provide at a low price point. Keep in mind that they don’t exclusively play jazz, it depends on the musicians booked each night so check the calendar. Will be coming back for sure.
They seem to have sessions, not very long ones. Everyone at the table has a 20.00 minimum. If you stay for 2 sessions it's $40.00 person. Space is tight, and jazz is just ok.
The music was very nice, the musicians are very skilled (but the ones we've seen don't really interact with the audience)! The bar is cash only but they have an ATM downstairs if needed. The service was okay but not great, the waitress forgot to take our order (we had to ask the tenant) and put a 20% tip on our bill at the end as if it were compulsory. When I said I would give a 15% tip because the service was just okay (and also because we stayed only 45min), the waitress pretended not to understand, didn't ask what she could improve and was not very professionnal. There is no entry fee but you need to consume for at least $15 per person. I found it fair at the beginning but I realized then that it implied that the musicians are not payed by the bar, so you better provide for big tips to support the band (I think after all I would prefer an entry fee that would pay the band). Last, the wine was very good but the cocktails are very very small for their high prices. In short, I would recommend this place only for the music and the seats that are quite cosy and offer good visibility.
We came to this place to listen to some live jazz music. We would have had dinner but the place doesn't offer a food menu, just quick bites (just a cheese board and pop corns). It's small and cosy, but just for a drink. Cocktail selection rather limited compared to other places. Friendly Staff and good músic.
Overall, it was a good experience for a jazz performance. The musicians were very professional and the performances were excellent. However, there were a few things I wasn’t happy about. First, the host, who played the saxophone, made jokes about the piano player's name, claiming it was too difficult to pronounce. Honestly, I didn’t think it was that hard; the name was either Lou or Liu. He made this joke twice: once at the beginning and again at the end of the session. At first, I didn’t think much of it, but when he repeated it at the end, saying something like, "I still don’t know his name, even though we’ve been playing together haha" I found it unprofessional and a bit ignorant, especially when the pianist was, IMO, the best performer of the night. Another issue was with the bartender. Perhaps they thought we were tourists because they automatically added a 20% gratuity and included it in the total on the check. I’m not sure if this is their standard practice for all customers or if it was because they assumed we were tourists (even though I live in NYC), but either way, it wasn’t a pleasant surprise, especially since we were seated at the bar, not at a table.
I have lived in the neighborhood for 22 years and have been coming here a long time. Everytime now it seems to be a different minimum at the door. Which I do not mind as I plan to have atleast 2 drinks. This past week was the first time I was added automatic gratuity for 2 people. Did I look like a tourist? The bartender really shorted herself because I tip way more than what you gave yourself on tip. Plenty of other places to frequent.
Great place to hear live music. No DJ nor NYU student streaming a playlist. This is live music at its best. Arthur’s Tavern does not charge a cover. Seating is first come, first serve. The venue is small but that’s the allure; you’re right next to the stage no matter where you sit. The drinks are good and they have a strong selection. The food options are very limited if there is any food available (just a cheese board when I went). But I was not here for the drinks or food. I came here for the music and by God it was damn good!
Edit: May 24, 2025: 5pm show, your service is trash. Big beard bald head bartender has the attitude of a person you’re annoying to ask for a drink. 20% added gratuity is a joke when you’re getting treated like a burden. Asked for a “Hendricks gin” and with a hard eye roll he asks “uh, how do you want it?”. You’re in a cocktail jazz bar, not a dive. I’ll get a club soda next time and come for the jazz, definitely not the atmosphere 2024: Cozy great jazz spot. Reservations recommended
Nice little jazz club if it wasn’t for a couple of rip-offs: menu on the website shows lower prices than menu at the venue; standing menu on the table says a minimum of $15 per person per table, while it’s also a minimum per set; 20% gratuity added to the check out of the blue is just preposterous! $72 for two people after just a cocktail each - that is waaaay to much. Creole Cookin’ Jazz Band were great!
Read your bill carefully. Servers add whatever amount of gratuity they “feel” like. Had 25% added to our bill without telling us that gratuity was included. Then suggested to keep the change of $1 on top of that. Left a poor taste. Jazz performers were great and we tipped the lady accordingly
The waitress was extremely rude and she nudged the guy next to me with her shoulder, causing his beer to spill all over my jeans and sneakers. She is also aggressively asking for tips and screaming in front of other peoples' faces. It’s not a big deal to find a good jazz band in Manhattan, so I won’t praise this place for that either. This place is a disgrace over all
Unprofessional, rude waiter & blonde waitress. We were about to tips (wallet in hand) whilst the waiter asked about his part, once the incident got closed they made fun at us… the waitress was uncanny and rude.. and told us the cover charge was 15$ per set of 15min? Are you insane? Very bad experience
I'm sorry to leave a bad review. This is against deceptive charging rather than the club or it's musicians. I've been here many times but for the first time charged a flat fee of 15 per person for the the music. Nowhere is this stated. This has always been a free club where you tip the musician. 35 dollars for a beer and a gin and tonic plus what I payed the musician for listening to 3 songs. Just tell me that is the new policy so I'm aware. The doorman just walked away when I confronted him. There are so many other clubs in the area. Im sorry I won't return here
Incorrect closing hours. If you're not going to stay open until the time you post, do us all the courtesy of at least not lying about it.
Scam $15min/person then they tack a 20% gratuity on-top. Anywhere but here— bartender also puts his fingers all over the brim of your glass. Dirty fingers-to-lips. Nasty!
Avoid this place!! I was upset to find that a 20% gratuity was secretly added to my bill for a single glass of wine, without my knowledge. The bartender didn't even show me the tab, just swiped my card and handed it back without telling me how much I paid. There was no mention of an automatic gratuity anywhere on the menu, nor did anyone tell me. It felt incredibly deceptive, and I was planning to tip anyway. That + the unadvertised door charge just feels shady. It's a shame because the wine and music were good, but I won't support businesses that use bad business tactics.
We stopped by to meet up friends in the city, what turned out to be a cute lil spot left a sour taste in our mouth. Not only did it take about 15 minutes to stop by and take our order. He never stopped by to check on us, ask if we wanted more or close our tab. After finishing our wine and socializing for about 30 minutes my husband opted to go to the bar to close our tab. The 20% suggestion at the bottom of the menu says if there’s any issues tell your server. Mind you our two wines were $16 each and our total was $43… for service we didn’t even receive. My friend and her partner had been at the location waiting for us and had gotten their drinks at the bar because the waiter took too long. We left a 40 & headed out. Why? Because there was no service provided. We got hauled by the waiter and security a block and a half down yelling at us saying we didn’t pay our bill. We turned around and said it’s on the table in the little book where they give you your bill. My husband proceeded to follow them back to show them, they then proceeded to tell my husband that our friend and her partner didn’t pay to which my husband began arguing stating they did at the bar. Long story short, their waiter was drunk, they apologized to us and told us to move on. Like move on? Sure but don’t harass your guests after they leave with having any sense of what the hell you’re talking about. What would’ve been a spot i would probably return to for a nice dinner turned into a crap location.
Unprofessional and disorganized—don’t bother making a reservation. I am extremely disappointed with my experience at Arthur’s Tavern. We made a reservation a full month in advance for 7:00 PM yesterday, but the entire night was a waste of time and effort. The level of disorganization is shocking. Because they are cash-only, we went out of our way to stop at an ATM specifically for this visit. We then drove 40 minutes to get to the bar, only to be told they were overbooked and wouldn't let us in. What makes it worse is that there was no system in place—they didn’t even have a queue or a separate line for people who had actually booked a table. We stood around waiting for 35 minutes, hoping the staff would honor our booking, but it became clear that the reservation meant absolutely nothing to them. If you aren't going to honor bookings or manage your capacity, don't take reservations in the first place. Between the long drive and the cash requirement, the complete lack of professional service was insulting. We eventually gave up and left. Save yourself the drive and go somewhere that respects their customers' time.
The Band was good but the staff were the worst ever! I ordered 3 glasses of wine for $16 each and 2 beers for my lady friend $11 each, that’s $70 total, waiter gave me a bill for $120 with mistakes and 20% tip included in small print, I calmly discussed the issues and he got indignant then the bouncer bumped into me and said in an aggressive tone Is There a Problem! Eventually I got the bill down to $90 not including tip, they said cash only! the barman insulted me, they were in fighting mode! I felt like I was mugged!
Place has a cool vibe, bartenders are sweet, but owner/ manager (?) is SO so creepy. Came with a group, mainly girls, and they were all made to feel uncomfortable by this guy. Got way too close and was pressuring “free” shots to only women. Very bad feeling about his demeanor in general. Service was slow but ok. Will not be back because of the creepy atmosphere.
It doesn’t matter if you only watched the last quarter of one show and stayed for part of the next — they’ll still try to charge you the full cover for both shows. This came as quite a surprise when we asked for the bill. They claim there’s a mandatory $15 minimum consumption per person (which is fair), but instead they presented a bill charging two full covers for two people ($60), plus taxes and tips (which I believe are not mandatory, though they were added to the handwritten bill). I understand it’s NYC and prices are expected to be high, but they really tried to pull a tourist trap on us — we had to argue firmly to avoid paying for something we didn’t owe. Be transparent about your fees and respect your customers; don’t try to take advantage of tourists. If that changes, I’ll be happy to update my review. The music was great, and we tipped the musicians as they deserved.
