shrimp rice noodle roll with cilantro and chili oil 😮💨 gas spot is small so can be hard to find a seat. if it’s too busy and the weather is nice, take it one long block to eat on benches outside the natural history museum
Got the vegetable rolll (aka plain roll w/ corn beansprout cilantro scallion n sesame). Pretty good spot for vegetarians. I asked which of the table sauces were veg and he told me the peanut sauce, chili oil and soy sauce. So they were knowledgeable about whats veg. Roll was super silky and chewy and a great texture. With the sauces it was great
Very pricy compared to Chinatown or Elmhurst. Basically $8 vs $4.75 for a basic shrimp rice roll, but what I appreciate about this place more than the others is the option to add so many different toppings to your rice roll. To me that makes a huge difference in my enjoyment of the dish and is worth the price difference
A no-frills spot with five tables, offering about 13-14 seats total, and a restroom for customers. There’s a digital kiosk near the entrance for self-ordering, whether for dine-in or takeout. Service is quick, and food is served on disposable plates. I’ve never seen a host at the payment counter, but you can get assistance by waving at someone in the kitchen. I’m a big fan of their Signature Rice Rolls, which I highly recommend. I also like their pancakes and crepes.
Got the Shrimp Party rice roll w/ bean sprouts, lettuce, and scallion and the Curry Fish Balls. The fish balls were alright, a good add on since I was hungry but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get them. The curry sauce was yummy though. The rice roll was tasty, soft, and had a good amount of filling! Rolls were nicely chewy and not too thick. I got a fresh shrimp in most of my bites too. $10 for a rice roll does feel like a lot but compared to other places in the neighbourhood it is a steal. I was satiated after everything, would definitely go there again if I was hungry and in the area
Joe's Steam Rice Roll in NYC is a must-visit spot for anyone looking to try simple yet delicious food. The concept is unique in that they specialize in steam rice rolls, a popular snack in China. The rice rolls are freshly made and filled with a variety of ingredients like pork, shrimp, vegetables, and more. I tried the pork and shrimp rice rolls and was blown away by the tenderness of the meat and the freshness of the vegetables. The rice roll itself was soft and chewy, and the sauce added just the right amount of flavor. What I loved most about Joe's Steam Rice Roll was that the menu is so simple, yet everything is done exceptionally well. The prices are also very reasonable, making this a great spot for a quick lunch or snack. The service was also friendly and efficient. Overall, Joe's Steam Rice Roll is a great concept with delicious food that is sure to satisfy. Highly recommended!
Absolutely love going to a place that specializes in one type of dish-- you know it's got to be good! There was an array of steamed rice rolls. The list was extensive but it really comes down to what protein you want and sauce. The texture of the rice rolls was fantastic-- thin enough to not break apart and thick enough for a good bite. They looked delicate but held together nicely. It's nice that the rolls weren't too oily (a problem for some other places when they try to make them not stick). The restaurant was casual. Limited seating but it wasn't too bad of a wait during lunch time (seemed like most people were ordering take out / pick-up).
Fantastic casual and delicious food. Definitely the best steamed rice rolls I've had ever. The rice rolls are clearly freshly made and the difference is noticeable. Recommend if you're looking for something filling but light. It's really good for balancing out all of the greasy and other heavy foods.
Legit and delicious. The crepe is excellent, thin, chewy and smooth. Even better than many other varieties I had growing up in Hong Kong. Curry fish balls are also my comfort food. It’s the deep fried type. So texture tends to be bouncier with a slightly crunchier skin but dehydrated. I tried the bbq pork, and shrimp party. Both excellent! Great Cantonese snacks for a broader American audience. Highly recommended!
We had Joe’s Signature and Shrimp Party. Both of these were delicious! The Shrimp Party you could really taste the shrimp. E we also added lettuce and corn to it. For Joe’s Signature we got it with cabbage and corn. Topped it with the soy sauce, hot chili oil, and peanut sauce. So much umami!! Also it’s a great price for the amount of food you get. Looks can be deceiving. We were pretty full after this!
Really ended up liking Joes steam rice roll! It tasted really delicious and it was also really well priced. The vegetable steam rice was only $5, and the fish balls were $3. The steam rice was delicious and I liked the texture of it. I also liked how the restaurant had a lot of sauces and condiments to pour over the steam rice roll to give it even more flavor. The service is also fast, and my food came out quickly. There is also a good amount of seating inside. The place was also clean and there was good customer service. Price: $5.00💸 Rating: 8.5/10📝
Joe's Steam Rice Roll is a fun and interesting spot specializing in a unique Hong Kong street food experience. The service is quick and friendly, keeping things moving efficiently and adding a welcoming energy to the visit. The food is decent and the concept is enjoyable, but the rice rolls themselves could use more depth of flavor and filling generosity to really impress. The atmosphere is casual and functional without much personality. Worth a visit for something different, with the service being a genuine bright spot.
Joe’s Signature Rice Roll 4 soft thin skin, variety of meat & veggie, medium flavorful Chinese Crepe w/ Pork Floss 3 crispy, mayo flavor
First time trying this location and they hold true to OG Joe’s. Very on brand with minimal atmosphere of tables and chairs. Places kinda looks abandoned when you first walk in lol. Rice rolls were freshly made and quality. Don’t sleep on the jian bing though, small but very TASTY. Prices are fair for the portion.
Rice Rice Roll with Egg 4/5: Really thin layers of rice noodle, layered with generous pork + veggie fillling! Curry Fish Balls 3/5: very watery curry sauce with little flavor, wouldn't get this again. Good option for Cheungfun in the UWS, but personally doesnt top Yin Ji Changfen in Chinatown!
What is there better to crave than fresh rice Rolls? Had the BBQ Pork and Shrimp ones. Shrimp was fantastic, BBQ Pork was not so much to my taste. Enhance them with your own portioning of sauces to your liking! Big and tasty serving size. Service was mediocre. I was the only person in store so I would have expected it to turn out differently. I'd suggest to take the food to go and sit in a park! As the ambience is also nothing special and limited seating available only.
I had the veggie (corn, scallion, bean) rice roll. It had nice texture but lacked flavor. 100% must put both sauces on it to make it better. Maybe next time I'll try the shrimp. Sounds like that's the favorite amongst reviewers. I'd give it another shot. All the tables were dirty, staff had plenty of time to clean as the place was empty. Yucky
Cheap (less or equal to $10) with small quantities, tastes are not bad. But it takes an extremely long time to wait (as shown in a plate in the restaurant, 30+mins). It takes me 40 minutes for my food to get ready and I will not come here again
During the pandemic, we used to walk from the UWS all the way to the Canal St location, so we were really excited when this location opened. Today, we went back for the first time in a while, and were disappointed. The food is still really good, and we tried the chili oil wontons, which hit the spot; BUT the state of the shop was not great. To start, the screen on the ordering kiosk was FILTHY. Sticky, streaky, gross. Mind you, there's no sink where you can now wash your hands after having to use the nasty order screen. The available tables were not in the worst state, but none of them completely clean. To be fair, they also weren't so dirty that we couldn't wipe them off ourselves, which we did. Lastly, we asked for some tap water to have with our meal, and were told that we couldn't have any - is that even allowed? I was under the impression that food establishments needed to have water available. Overall, although the food was good, the whole experience was disappointing and left us a bit grossed out.
At first really like their rice roll, but today it fell short ..there were no 3 free items inside my rolls whatsoever. Ordered beef rice roll with lettuce, bean sprouts and scallions...none of it was on there except for the egg which I had to pay $1 extra. Be prepared to wait long time for it now that they moved to the new location which takes even longer time. Also don't like the fact that they use black containers because those are bad plastic And unsafe for health
Was super excited about finally trying this famous spot and walked away completely disappointed. To start off, the restaurant opened late simply because worker show up to work late. After the restaurant opened, I placed an order and inquire after about an hour wait why my order is not done yet despite orders that were placed after me complete already. Staffs seemed confused and although they apologize about my order being late, they state that it was my fault for ordering item that takes different machine to make which is not logical reason since any food establishment will sequence making order though in this case, they chose to skip my order completely (My order was #2 and #6 was done already). After further debate, staff said it was also because I chose a vegetable that they dont have in-stock. This is scallion, a common garnish in most orders, and again is not a legit reason as they could’ve simply inform me vs waiting for me to complain after an hour wait. I also was awed that they blame me for ordering specific item eventhough it is on their menu. At the end, they said they will make my order “now” or can give a refund which I chose to take. Any other restaurant would’ve made more effort to compensate and demonstrate sincerity though it appears to me that it was not the case. To close off, their ticket machine was broken so they said they cannot give me prove of refund for my order and if I have an issue, can call the restaurant back at later date. Overall, unprofessional staff and operation that dont know how to handle order or customer relation. Compare to the experience I encounter, no matter how good the food is, it is not worth it as I walked out after 1+ hour empty handed, starving, and TBD on refund status.
