*Update from previous post 2 years ago* Our go-to noodle & soup place. Spicy salt chicken wings, BBQ pork lo mein, kung pao chicken, and chicken chow mein are amazing! Great soups for cold/rainy days as well. Love the food, the fast service and the staff we've gotten to know on the restaurant side are great! For those complaining about the difference in language, never been an issue and don't know a lick of Chinese. If you want more explanation of a menu item just ask and be patient. If you come in with a superior attitude, your experience is your own fault. Prices have risen a bit since the pandemic started as has been the case with most restaurants, but the food has remained good.

Great Chinese BBQ place. There are several locations of Sam Woo but this is the one that we frequently go to. The food is authentic and excellent, no doubt about it. The Chinese BBQ is really the best. Very difficult to find better roast pork, and duck. Prices are reasonable but it's cash only so keep this in mind when coming in to load up on the awesome BBQ delicacies. There are a wide variety of choices in the BBQ deli as well as the restaurant where you can get very well prepared and authentic Chinese food. Highly recommend!

Looking for cheap authentic Chinese food? This is the place. Delicious BBQ pork and roast duck. The food is just as good as any Hong Kong Street stall food. Service is good . You will get what you need but the waiters are not going to come around every 5 mins to see if you need anything else. Just order ,enjoy the food , pay your bill.

I and my family have been coming here since 1985 lol and i was born in 95 lol and its still my favorite place to go Please if your to sensitive for old school dinning this is not the place for you. come in be respectful and speak clearly the fried squid, tri shredded chow mein crispy, and BBQ pork are my highest priority when ordering there to each their own 🥸

The atmosphere of this restaurant may take you aback at first, with ducks and a pig hanging in the window. But the good here is the best Chinese food I've ever eaten. My friends from Asia and America both love their food. I always order plenty extra, so I can take home leftovers. This is a great restaurant!

What a terrific find in the San Fernando Valley! Hong Kong style eatery, you know it's authentic when with the exception of me , the entire place was frequented by Asian customers. I had a 2 item BBQ plate,, Roast duck and Spareribs ($15.95) side of sticky rice (1.50) and a soda , they even have hot mustard! If you look at the picture I attached, it's enough for me to have 2 meals. The duck skin with the mustard hot chili oil and a splash of soy and the rice was truly the most delicious part of my lunch. Do your self a service, go to this place! P.S. they have a service deli if you are in a hurry with all your favorites to go in a hurry!

Love this little little hole in the wall restaurant. Throughout the years it has remained the same. I have great childhood memories here. And now as an adult I still find myself coming. Their duck is delicious! They have great specials after 9pm. Only downfall is that its an cash only restaurant and they have a really small amount of parking spots available. Therefore, you have to at times Park in the street.

As a child going out to this restaurant with my family was a treat. Although they’ve cleaned up the place, their food thankfully is just as I remember. As you walk in the first thing that hits you is the smell of great cuisine. After that you are met with the sight of roasted ducks hanging prominently on display. On the right hand side is for those who are in a hurry and know what they’re ordering to go and for phone orders. The have quite the selection menu-wise. Now for those that are going to dine-in. They have a seating for up to 7 or 8 as a family also have other seating options as well. The waiters are very helpful and attentive to their customers and very courteous. if anything is wrong with your order or it’s not to your liking they will make things right. Which is why I always enjoy coming back here. They have not changed and their service is excellent it’s definitely worth the trip. Try their wonton soup. the bbq pork fried rice is the best. The bbq pork and bbq duck are exquisite.

Enjoyed the food there. Just want to note that I'm a Malaysian and when I see the kind of food there it just reminded me of home. So, it's worth a try. It can't exactly copy the taste of home but, it got close. To my Malaysian friends, give it a shot and let me know what you think. :)

No frills. An honest casual filling meal with prices and flavors that stay true from when I first ate here 30 years ago. Prices are fair and portions are hearty that I drive an hour to eat here. There's too many gimmicky food places now and I find myself easily picking this place for their BBQ meats and comfort foods. If you want your fancy service and dressed up plating etc, please go eat somewhere else and leave this place be. Some of else don't mind the cozy atmosphere with mostly Cantonese speaking staff, the mahjong tile clock, and unfaultable service.

I ordered the roast duck over rice and my girlfriend had the wonton noodle soup with roast duck. This place is CASH ONLY, but outside from that the portions were generous and the food was quite good, especially for the price. I spent maybe $35 here for the TWO of us after tip. Don't expect good service or anything. Had to ask for waters, never refilled or checked in, but you can't expect too much at this $.

BOMB DOT COM. If you want to experience authentic chinese/Cantonese cuisine, here is your place! Love the crispy bbq pork and wonton noodle soup. Basically the food you'll get if you visit hongkong or china. Great prize as well. They have lunch special which is very reasonable. But do carry cash with you since it's a cash only restaurant.

Visited Sam Woo on recommendation that the roast pork and duck were delicious and it truly was. We ordered 3 different meat selection dishes and a beef dish. Needless to say the portions were huge and plenty of meat. We ended up with a doggy bag to take home for a late night snack. Prices were very reasonable.

I'm crazy about this place so authentic, delicious and great portions and prices. We got so much food, a plate of eggplants, duck and chicken over rice and duck and pork over rice all for like $26 something. Oh and complimentary pot of tea.

A great place for Chinese Restaurant if you don't mind the ambient and just want good food! It's basically a hole in the wall! It's always busy. However, if you have to wait to be seated, it's a very short wait because people go there to eat - No must no fuss if you know what I mean...lol... pretty much everything taste good here! You get a lot and the price is much lower than elsewhere. There are different chains of Sam Woo restaurants. However, I've gone to several different ones in the past, but the taste is much better at this location. The other locations have better setups but for me I can't eat or taste ambient. I want to enjoy my food... That's why I would drive over 100 miles to come to this restaurant! I think that says a lot! Here I highly recommend Beef Chowfun, Shrimp Chow Me (either crispy or dry, they are both good. Just prepared in different style. The "CRISPY" style- The noodles are pan fried to a crisp like a nest and then shrimp and bok choi (Chinese vegetable) stir fry with white sauce are poured into the noodle nest. The "DRY" style - The noodles are soft and stir fry with shrimps, green onion, brown onions, and soy sauce.) The wonton noodle soup is very inexpensive here! It's $3.99 or $4.99 for a huge bowl, which is enough for individual meal! Sorry I can't remember the exact price. I actual remembered it at $2.99 but didn't want to say it because it's been awhile since I've ordered it a year ago...lol... you'll have to see for yourself. Oh, forgot to say that the wontons are filled with shrimps, which is hard to find nowadays to find to good food for such inexpensive pricing! Updated as 4/11/2019 - I just went there to pick up a to go as I was in town and was surprised to see that the prices on the menu were raised by $2 - $3! Wow! Personally I think that is just too high to stay competitive with the other restaurants in the area, especially if it is lacking in ambiance. The food do taste great but I personally can't say I will be dinning here at the new menu prices though. I had left my old review up, but please DISREGARD ANY REFERENCES TO GOOD VALUE FOR YOUR $$!!!

My family and I had been coming to this Sam Woo BBQ for many years since I was young, so far in my opinion, this has to be one of the best Chinese BBQ in alhambra, we usually order bbq pork, which was really good, some squid and chinese broccoli, and I highly recommend trying the kung Pao chicken which was my overall favorite, it was flavorful and soft, its not even oily either, but overall my family is satisfied with all the food we order, but it could have been better if they patch things a little with the holes on the walls and lots of flies coming into our food and accepting credit cards.

They have the best Wonton Noodle in San Gabriel valley and probably second only the Cantonese noodle places in Hong Kong. Big bowl with 5 wontons is only $10. Also try the soy chicken or salt chicken rice plate $6 that is not on the menu.

First time with my uncle and auntie. My uncle came here often and keeps coming more than 30 years ago! I really like the noodles and wonton soup. The eggs noodles 🍜 so so so good 👍🏻 thin but the texture is really good I finished my bowl without anything left for me a little bit pricey even I didn't pay for it but they have like breakfast specials at 9am-11:30am in the morning for$ 7.99 (I saw the sign) roasted duck, pork and bbq pork also good 👍🏻 We ordered soup cuz a bit cold outside! Recommended 💯

We are not from around here but my father and I will make an effort to come to this Sam Woo BBQ restaurant once a month. If you come before 11:30am, they have great deals on early luncheon menu. Highly recommend this establishment because the food is so inexpensive and delicious! Fact is, it's much cheaper than going to MacDs! Update 01-09-25. Brunch Specials have, gone up to $7.99. Still. It's an amazing deal. See my lastest photo of beef chow fun. Yummy!

Inexpensive and tasty food. I don't eat here often, but I usually get their ducks (you know, the ones you see hanging in the window). It's not the best, but it's still tasty. They chop it up better than some other places I've bought duck from.

Traditional Chinese restaurant serving a small size customers. Love their won ton noodles, barbeque pork rice and other dishes. Prices are reasonable. Service is good. Lots of people in lunch and dinner peak hours.

I have to say I've been coming to this restaurant for about 20 years. Normally the service is pretty good but this last time the waiter was hard to understand. I wasn't able to get him to understand what I wanted and so I didn't get what I wanted to order. It could have been partially his age and partially his mask. In any case I have now started to go to the other place on Las Tunas in Temple City. Better parking, younger staff. Same good food. Oh, one other thing. Gone are the days when Chinese food was inexpensive.

S
Shelby M

This place, overall, was pretty good. Their fried rice is bomb, so I definitely recommend that. The duck was good, although the temperature was strange. It was warmer in some areas and cooler in others. The taste was pretty good though. The inside is exactly how you'd expect; nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. The service was good and the staff was friendly. They helped me pick out food because I was super indecisive. I'd definitely recommend checking this place out. There are definitely other places that might be a little better, but the wait and the service here makes it worth it.

This is the original Sam Woo as far as I know. Each Sam Woo has different quality and this one is the reference standard. Their signature dishes are their BBQ, especially the soy sauce chicken. The beef stew and tendon is second to none. But their best value meal is their breakfast special. For the die hard from Hong Kong, the wonton noodle and duck blood congee is the closest to HK or Vancouver quality.

The very BEST Chinese BBQ House in L.A. -- Dim Sum items available. Frequently busy, but food is definitely worthy. Best take-away place. Call 30 mins. n place order for pick-up. The food is honestly really amazing. Parking can be a little difficult, and the grade they received indicate they might not be the most hygienic, but I still love their food. Customer service is...well, it would be nice if they were friendlier. They're usually just straight to the point, not exactly rude though.

This place is OG. It’s been around for a long time. Their food is good, comes in the big white take out boxes you have come to know. My favorite thing to order here is the dry style ho fun that’s wok fired with fried tofu cubes. It’s a special order because they usually fry it with beef.

Delicious Chinese food with generous portion! I hope they maintain the standard both quantity and quality. Kung Pao chicken was good. Just the right flavor. Mapo Tofu somehow didn’t taste like it. It’s good but just not the typical Mapo Tofu I had from other Sichuan restaurants. Packaging for to-go was not the best for my Kung Pao. It self-destroyed when I arrived at home.

I have been eating at this place for a few years. It used to be one of a few A-rated Chinese restaurants in town, but a recent B rating does not stop me from going. I admit that I normally don't write reviews for places I visit, even as a regular customer, but I have seen a lot of unfair reviews or comments here, and I feel I must say something. This restaurant makes me feel like I'm dining in a Cantonese cafe in old Chinatown in Manhattan or San Francisco. Its service staff and atmosphere give me a special feeling of history about first-generation immigrants. However, I understand that not everyone likes its "old" setting. They offer the best-value meal in town. Tell me if anyone can find other places offering a better deal! When the minimum wage for fast-food workers has gone up to $20 an hour already (they are fighting for $24 an hour now), this place still offers many $6.99 meals if the orders are placed before 11:30 AM. It becomes unfair to compare the $6.99 dishes with those at $30 or $60 at other fancier places. So, please be realistic. Their regular-priced menu usually costs about $10ish per dish, but it is still super affordable. Here, I want to give the following reviews about the food and service in a more realistic review. The food is not bad at all. Most of the dishes I ordered have authentic Cantonese flavor. I won't say they offer the best Cantonese food in town, but I would rather pay $6.99 or $10 for an authentic Cantonese plate than a cheeseburger meal. I am not sure if it is because I can also speak Cantonese myself and communicate well with the servers, but I heard them speaking in English with other guests. They are excellent servers. I have always received good service from this place. The labor cost is so high now, and it is so difficult for any restaurants to find good servers. Sometimes, there is only one waitress or waiter to wait 6 - 7 tables in the restaurants, but they work diligently to provide efficient service to me whenever I eat there. We are very fortunate that there is still a place in LA or the U.S. that offers very affordable yet authentic Cantonese food in today's super harsh business environment in general. After I eat there, I often order some BBQ to go, but keep in mind that the servers only take care of dine-in options. All to-go orders must be ordered and paid for in the designated area/counter for takeout. It is not the best Cantonese restaurant in town, but it is a place with a history. I hope they will continue doing well, and I want to come back again often. For today's brunch, I ordered three dishes at $6.99 each for three persons (the congee comes with a small plate of rice noodles). We were very full. I uploaded the pictures here for your references.

Leon M
Leon M

This restaurant has been around Alhambra for many years. Their dine-in menus are very affordable with generous portions, but it's only cash based. Servers there are very fast and responsive. As soon as you sit, you will have hot tea, menu, and setting on your table. Lunch menu is on the back with the starting of $10.99 for each item. Sometimes, their portions could be very inconsistent, so it depends on who work on the kitchen. Other than that, this is my go-to restaurant for lunch sometime.

The BEST fried rice. One of my must visits every time headed this way. Love the fried rice tremendously, and the barbeque on the side. Prices are very reasonable as well, and place is accommodating enough although gets full pretty quick. People don’t normally spend too much time around here so seats roll with little time. Staff is quick and speaks cantonese.

Good food to eat on occasion. First time here and I liked the food. I came at night time and ordered the 2 meat combo that was supposed to come with bok choy, rice, etc, but they left all that out and I got mainly the meat, such as duck and pork. I'll have to order earlier in the day next time to get all the other stuff. Sign said cash only. If you order online for pickup, you can use credit card. They have a small free parking lot. You can park on the street as well.

D
Daren Chung

Busy, with poor lady answering phones, taking counter orders, being cashier and packing orders. Duck was decent, as was roast pork, but curry brisket was oddly lacking curry flavor. Stick mainly to bbq stuff as that seems to be what they do best.

H

My friend got me a really good roast duck three months ago. I stopped by specifilly few weeks ago spending almost $100 . To my disappointment, he roast duck is not as good as last time. I did confirm with my friend it is the same store. The other food are okay. The pork ear is non-spicy.

R
Ryant Takai

Been coming here since I was a kid. Love the food here just bummed they got a 'B' rating. It's a very small size restaurant (hole in the wall type) with their togo section which is usually busy. I had one of their rice dishes I believe it was number 128 on the menue. Service was expedient. I'd give them more stars for the rating, however 3 is appropriate.

L

The crispy noodle with lobster was good but the roast duck was very bad! (I ordered rice with roasted duck). This was the second time I had bad experience with roast duck here recently. The duck meat was too fatty & the meat was almost detached from the skin. This place used to be very good in Barbecue foods especially roast duck!

There are 2 areas, take out and restaurant. The takeout area reminds me of HK although there's this weird unclean smell in that area which turned my sister off. I've gotten pork bbq at the takeout area in the past though and it was excellent. Service was great in the restaurant area. Food was good except for the roast pork. Skin was too tough and meat seemed old. Other than that, not a bad experience.

D
David A

The food is delicious and flavorful. I highly recommend the BBQ pork fried rice, BBQ pork, and chicken chow mein with soft noodles. The wonton soup is also a must-try. The service is good but I was in awe when the server demanded a higher tip, which came across as unprofessional. Unfortunately, this is the second time I've experienced this issue while dining in.

DOUBLE CHECK YOUR BILL. I noticed they will add extra on the bill and purposefully write ambiguous scribbles to confuse with the numbers. They are over charging customers left and right. It’s too bad because the food is delicious but definitely be on the look out!

This is a tiny cash only Chinese barbeque restaurant. My family was craving for roast duck but the skin was not crispy. The congee with duck was ok. The chicken/pork barbeque with noodle soup tasted off, like it was old. The pork barbecue was the only satisfying dish.

C
Chris Rosales

Very average. Inexpensive. Old and warn out everything. Dirty utensils and sauces on the tables were sticky. Ordered beef and wonton soup, had 2 slurps and threw rest back into bowl. Salt porkchops were undercooked. Bbq pork and steamed chicken on bed of rice were cold. My apologies to the homeless guy we gave our leftovers to. 1st and last visit.

a

I have been coming here for years since I was a child because the food is good but this recent visit was something else. My brother and I calculated the check and turns out the waiter was trying to over charge us $10, so we left the exact amount and a tip, then she comes running after us saying we owe her and we tell her to do the math and she realized that she indeed over charged us then she said “only two dollar tip, I want more tip. Give me more tip”. Honestly, very unprofessional because first she tries to over charge us then she demands a higher tip. Not sure if I want to come back after that. I’ve noticed this is a trend in many Chinese restaurants where the waiter demands a higher tip even though the service is very mediocre.

This Sam Woo to-go area is horrible and the staff actually make it worse for the customers instead of help making it better. The aisle is really only wide enough for two people side by side. But they allow huge orders to be taken right in the same line causing huge back ups. They should just take large orders on the side out of the way of the quick customers, but they've been extremely inefficient for so long and seemingly enjoy watching the customers fight each other. Today there was a woman asking about prices for a large future order, everyone behind me was making grunting noises already due to the wait. And to my right, some guy that squeezed in for a mobile order. The indecisive women who was just window shopping at this point, tells me I can go ahead even though there is no space and yet she refuses to move over for everyone else. When I can finally get up there, the old woman is helping me and the other one in glasses, who is the usual problematic staff for me there. Calls the guy behind me and he pushes me out of the way while I'm waiting for my change still. The food is not even worth the hassle of the ridiculous line set up. Save yourself the headache and go to the other Sam Woo locations.

I was missing for a taste of home and wanted some Chinese BBQ. Recommended by many users online, we decided Sam Woo was the place to try Chinese bbq in the city. Atmosphere and service are similar as to other family owned, hole in the wall restaurants; which was certainly homey. We ordered the 3 type of BBQ with rice. I got BBQ Duck, ChaSiu, and Soy Sauce chicken. Upon first bites of everything, I noticed the meats were all cold — an unusual feeling while chewing down the assortment of bbq. Oddly, the chicken was bland and “wet”, not in a juicy way, but just “wet”. Although the rice was soft and delicious, which was the highlight, I thought the overall plate was just okay. Was hoping for better as I gleaned from the reviews, but nonetheless, still glad I tried.

I was disappointed with the food at this particular location. Despite having had a positive experience at the Van Nuys branch, my recent visit fell short of expectations. While the service was efficient and friendly, the quality of the food did not meet the standards set by the other location. We ordered the 3-meat BBQ option and a BBQ pork wonton noodle soup, however, the soup base seemed to be fish-based, which was not to our liking. Furthermore, the BBQ meats were served cold, lacked flavor, and the accompanying rice was lukewarm. Regrettably, I do not anticipate returning to this specific location in the future.

The food is good here but they only accept cash and they are very frugal with the duck sauce. I ordered two whole ducks and 2lbs of bbq pork and the lady only gave me 2 small dipping sauces.

Ordered food and watched the restaurant filled up... lots of orders to go... over 45 minutes as other tables that came after us was served... waiter finally recognized us... said "sorry"... wait 15 minutes more, walked out. Peter... if you read this... I'm very disappointed I've help support your restaurant for many of years, repaired your communication system there... I never see you there anymore... I'm happy your business is doing well, take care in the new year.

One of the better Asian bbqs flavor sabatoged by stealing food. When you buy a whole duck, they take pieces out to fund the dishes for dine in. Do not go here. Shady practices.

Really bad service. We were told cash only at check out without any notice beforehand. There was no sign saying cash only either. Had to run to the bank to get cash.

Went to this restaurant yesterday around 6pm. The waiter that took my order said to pay after I received my order. Next thing I know they tell me cash only and I have to use their atm. My order was around $17. Their atm machine charged $2.69 for fees to withdraw $20 and today I was balancing my checking account and there was a $2.50 charge for that same withdrawal, which means I paid an additional $5.19 for the food I ordered. Being my first time there, I saw no sign warning that it was cash only and to make matters worse the fish had a off taste, not fresh. Called 2 speak to the mgr, was told no mgr there.

Picked up takeout here and was surprised when they asked for a tip. I don’t mind tipping for service, but for simple pickup it feels unnecessary. The food might be okay, but this left a really bad impression. Do not recommend.

Went to get takeout for dinner — ordered a BBQ duck and crispy pork combo, but not only did they forget the sauce, they also gave me the wrong meat. Totally ruined what I was looking forward to all day. 😩

Looks like they have their targeted customers.. Don’t go there if you don’t speak Cantonese.. 1. They don’t have English menu 2. Staff were very impatient 3. The actual food I got was wayyy off from their ads( see pictures)

This place was recommended to my family by a friend who has gone here for fried rice. When we entered we weren’t welcome so we didn’t know where to go, and ended up ordering by a cashier and then took a seat. The waitress where very rude and complained about us for no know how the restaurant works even though we asked around. The waitress kept staring at us with a mean face and made me and my family feel unwelcome. When we where about to leave, two waitresses kept us from leaving for not leaving any tips, and in the presses of leaving I happen to leave my baby’s baby bottle in the table, and it didn’t even took a minute to before I turned around to go get it, our table was clean and when I asked for the bottle every waitress said they don’t know anything. Not to mention the place smells weird, but at least the food was okay.

The staff were so rude. Even though I had been a long time customer, I was treated poorly by the staff. I won’t come back to this restaurant for good.

By far the worst customer services I’ve ever met in my whole life. They don’t tell you that they ONLY ACCEPT CASH. AND THEY HAVE ZERO SIGN TELLING PEOPLE THAT THE ONLT TAKE CASH. Like who the heck would bring that much cash??? I ordered to go. And They literally have a ATM inside the restaurant, but I don’t have my debit card with me and I have no idea what the heck the pin is about my credit card?!?! And they say: you should go back home to get cash. They could’ve say that before I order and could’ve I just left. Sooooo crazy.

Food is decent. The roasted pork is amazing. The rice is a bit too wet, but overall the food is good. However, the service is completely unacceptable. I followed the instructions on the front door, but they told me last minute that they only accept cash. I know that’s not true because I’ve been here before and they took credit card. They also mixed up my order as takeout, and wouldn’t let me sit down to eat. The lady at the counter even told me to go back to my car to eat. This was my first time ever eating a meal in my car, and it left a really bad impression. Leaving my first comment because customers deserve better.

I ordered some takeout. I even gave them tips for the takeout. Later, I noticed they charged extra dish to my bill. I know they didn't expect they will pay me back but I want them to know to avoid mistakes in the future. They are so rude and didn't want to take any responsibility or at least check the bill. Whoever answered the phone kept yelling at me and said she didn't know anything and hang up. I have been going to this restaurant for many years. I will never go back there again. Be sure to ask for the receipt and check your bill.
