Opinions de Penny’s Diner Alpine
Has the look and feel of an old diner, including seats at the counter overlooking the cooks. We parked in back of the diner because we didn't see anywhere to park in front. The food was very good, and the tea and soft drinks are unlimited refills. Prices were quite reasonable, especially for a small tourist town. The place has zero atmosphere, unless you find old diners charming.
Loved the chicken and waffles, and my boyfriend loved his cheeseburger and tater tots. We went about 12:30 pm today, 2/4/24. First thing, the waitress tells us that she didn't have seats only at the bar. She was cleaning a table and told her we could wait for the table. We sat down and got plastic knives and forks. She wasn't very cheerful. There were a lot of tables not cleaned. She took our order and went away. Another group of people came in. She told them the same thing. They got upset because she was just taking her time to clear the tables. Taking one thing at a time. They finally got upset and left. She started clearing the table next to us, and then she dropped everything on the floor. Several things fly at my legs and hurt me. She never said I am sorry or anything. Then she picks up a few things from the floor. Doesn't really clean the floor. There was a metal knife on the floor. It never got picked up the whole time we were there. When we got the food, it was serviced on a regular plate. It was very hard to cut the food with a flimsy plastic knife. It took me a very long time to cut up the chicken and waffles. The food tasted great. The music in the background was horrible it just Taylor Swift. It would have been ok if it had a variety of different people singing but wasn't. We will not come back here anymore because of everything that is listed above. I hate to say this about any restaurant in town.
I was pleasantly surprised by the food quality here. More than expected from a 24 hour diner. And really great service. Would go back if in the area again.
Great little dive burger joint!! We try going everytime we drive through Alpine. A favorite!!
We stopped on our way to our hotel in Marathon. This diner was excellent and the employees were very friendly. The gentlemen who cooked our food rivals chefs I have encountered at 5 star hotels. Anytime I am anywhere near Alpine, I will be back. Skip the fast food and go to Penny's!
The young man running this place during late nights is a legend. There's nothing else open in Alpine or Big Bend area after 930pm, at least in May. We ate here twice during our one-week stay. If you are doing late night star shows and want somewhere to eat, this is your only option if your fridge is empty. The food is great!
Perfect hamburger and french dip. Quick and nice service. Hot food
We ate here on our first night in Alpine after a very long drive and lots of sight-seeing. We were tired and hungry! Husband had a burger, I had the French toast. Service was super friendly and sweet. French toast really hit the spot. Place just smelled like home. Very comforting. We'll come back the next time we're in town.
This was a fantastic breakfast spot driving from Big Bend to Guadalupe Mountain National Park. The chicken and waffles was fantastic. The hash browns were delicious and perfectly crispy. Highly recommend the Sunrise skillet. Great diner with great people and food.
Love this place! The food and service are always spot on! Plus love the New York diner feel! We eat here every time we visit Alpine!
Cute location, nice staff, food was pretty good we had lunch one day and breakfast the next. The pancakes are huge!
I got the Sunrise Skillet with sausage and over easy eggs, biscuit on the side. Delicious!! It is exactly what you picture when you imagine eating at a diner. Black and white tiles, booth seats, bar top chairs with chromium. A very charming place. They were very full when we got here, but there was no wait to sit. There was one waitress and one cook, and they covered everything seamlessly! All in all it took 40 minutes for us to sit down, order, get our food and eat it. Even if it seems like they forgot you, they didn't. They've got a great system and you should just trust it. Enjoy relaxing at the diner with your coffee :)
I have nothing, but good things to say about this restaurant! Been there 3 times now and have come once for dinner and twice for breakfast! I ordered a burger and fries and man, they tasted so good! Same with the breakfast meal and have ordered myself bacon and eggs with biscuits and loved it! Ordered an orange juice with the meal! The prices are pretty reasonable and love the quality and quantity as well! What more can I ask for! I will continue dining there in the very near future!
This place is definitely a diner. Very limit seating but the food was delicious! Between us, we ordered a variety of items. The philly, chopped steak, bacon lover burger, fish and chips, fried jalapenos and cheese sticks were all great. Everyone was very pleased with the size, flavor and temperature of our food. The average price of our main dish was $11.
Very cutesy diner. Visiting from out of town and it was late so not much was open other than this diner. I went into it not expecting much but was VERY pleasantly surprised. I’m sure you’ll enjoy whatever you eat here.
Great diner with all the comfort favorites.I recommend the hearty breakfast.
I was literally floored when I saw this place. I grew up in New York City and for that reason grew up eating in diners, many diners. This is a true old style diner. You can watch everything being made. Sit at the counter or sit at the tables and they even have a little porch when the weather is nice. The service was quick. The coffee was great. My wife had the classic breakfast with sausage and eggs over medium along with hash browns and toast excellent meal. I had the make your own omelet loaded with everything including jalapenos and it was great; the cheese was excellent. They do something interesting with the hash browns they flatten almost into a crisp which I found interesting chewy and very tasty. Service was very attentive and friendly. I found the restaurant to be quite clean though a tiny bit rundown. We are definitely coming back to try some of their dinner entrees such as meatloaf and chicken fry steak. If you've never been to a diner and you're passing through Alpine or staying here. You've got to try this at least once.
The restaurant offers standard casual comfort food that's enjoyable. The staff are friendly and accommodating, and the location is easy to find, which is a definite plus. However, we had to wait over 40 minutes for our breakfast due to the place being packed with customers. While it's understandable given the crowd, the wait time was a bit too long. I recommend this place.
Walked here while waiting for a new tire to be put on my car. Super clean diner. Outdoor patio if you have dogs with you. Very friendly staff. Food was hot and fresh. No complaints :)
Stopped in for breakfast after visiting the Big Bend area for a few days. Good selection of tasty grub. And it's a darn nice looking establishment! Very friendly staff and, did I mention the tasty grub?? If you're ever in Alpine and the tummy starts grumbling, stop in and get yourself some to eat. You won't regret it.
Went for breakfast yesterday and the guy working there was great. He was our waiter and cook. Had a wonderful breakfast and staff was very friendly.
Very good breakfast: plentiful, crispy bacon, tasty sausage and not too spicy, very satisfying quantity. Fast service and the people were all very friendly! I recommend
After having issues finding a fancy place to dine, we settled on comfort food, and it was the best choice we’d made all day. I personally had the chicken fried chicken, and I thought it was excellent. I was told the mashed potatoes were not the best, but the other side orders were fine. They had some sort of online order system that they weren’t using, so someone came by to take our order. Within 30 seconds of ordering them, our drinks were out. The food came out relatively quickly, and tasted fine. Overall, would recommend for good diner vibes and warm comfort food.
First time visiting this cafe. Great food with great service. The cafe was busy so it took a while to get our food, but it was worth the wait.
I wanted to address some of the bad reviews. The so called fire alarm going off is the fryer. This is a diner not a restaurant it’s run like in the old days. Diners were created to be less of a sit down restaurant and more like a sit in McDonald’s. The food was great. The building is awesome and honestly loved seeing all the old people coming in it was cool. It felt like the town hangout.
I really appreciate the food and the food was so good our Waiter. Was nice he asked for a refill for our drinks and the cook was really nice and cool and the employees picked up the mess around the dinner I really enjoyed the food nice little place to eat I would highly recommend this place to stop by and check out this place It definitely needs a 5 star I would come again from el paso even had to tip 10$ to the cook and the Waiter they really deserve it after they work so hard making food also there restroom is clean really nice place.
My husband & I ate here 2x while staying in Alpine. We enjoyed it. The waiter was very kind & attentive to us. Food was fresh & tasted very good. Would highly recommend. I had breakfast for dinner both nights. 😉❤️👍👍
Very fun place to eat. Loved the 50s dinner vibe. The shakes were awesome!
Guy with the nice hair with blonde highlights was super nice! Burgers were okay and worth the price. But the atmosphere was cool and shakes are bomb.
We always go to Alpine for sports and we wanted to try something new, I ALWAYS wanted to stop here. Well I wasn’t disappointed. It was a little small, but it was super cute! I got a bacon cheese burger and it was soooooo good! My husband got breakfast with a chicken fried steak. It looked really good too! Stop by and check out this cute little diner! I will be going back to try something else en
my partner and i were across the street at tractor supply looking for an item that we both expected them to not carry. we had already tried getting the item at true value, but they aren't open after they close, so we tried the tractor supply. we didn't locate the item, so it was a wasted trip. when we were walking out of the store to the car, the lights from the Penny's Diner were on and the place had such a wonderful look to it. i was reminded immediately that a slice of pie and a cup of coffee is my order at diners. now i want one! i have to wait several more hours before i can go back to true value for that part and i know already how sad i will be to not see that shining silver bullet across the street as i walk out of the store. i should leave a review for tractor supply and give them five stars for having a nice view from their door!
As a non-American, this was such a great experience! It’s a super old-school–style diner with a menu that I can imagine hasn’t changed much since the days when diners were everywhere. I’m really happy I got to see and experience one of these classic diners. The food is good, portions are generous, and while the coffee is just okay, refills are always close by. I definitely recommend this diner for both the experience and the food.
We were hungry and just wanted some home cooked food. I had a hamburger steak with brown gravy, mushrooms, and onions with steamed veggies and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. Very tasty. It fit the bill for my hunger and I enjoyed a dessert of banana cream pie which was delicious. I especially liked the light crust. Our waiter, Louis, was great! Thanks
Great little diner. We love finding places like this. Eat locally instead of chain restaurants. The CFC was great! They let me swap for onion rings for the second side. I finished it with a piece of chocolate cream pie for dessert. Man was it good!! Louis was a great server. His suggestion of pie was perfect. Great job, Penny's Diner!
A new and improved waite staff changed our attitudes about this cute diner. The cook is fast and generous so your food is served quickly and delicious. The waiter was super sweet and made our meal that much more enjoyable.
I'm not sure what the lady's name was, but I'm pretty sure she was there from my check in around 8pm until when I got breakfast around 10am. Very hard worker! But the food was great! The food came out quick, and my coffee cup was always full. It had such a homelike feel to the inside and if I ever go back to Big Bend State Park I'm definitely stopping back by here for more delicious food.
Nice little place to grab a bite to eat, food was good and portions are large. Coffee wasn’t strong, but that’s the way I prefer it with creamer. Half of the building towards the back end is closed off due to covid, meaning there are fewer seats available. I would bring a small group of people, max 4 since the booth seats can only hold 2 on each side. Enjoyed my visit here.
We had a nice breakfast at Pennys Dinner in Alpine Tx. The food was delicious, the staff friendly and had a great vibe. Would definitely go there again and would recommend to anyone looking for a down to earth, good food with a friendly "diner vibe" to try them out.
Ate here recently for the first time in years. It's easy to overlook. Breakfast was fine. It's not the best I've ever had.. but it's light-years better than the worst. Definitely beats the continental breakfasts from motels. Service was awesome. The people are great. And the atmosphere is neat.
Cool looking 'old school' diner with the classics. Unfortunately, when I visited they were out of just about every meat except for ham and chicken fried steak. So, chicken fried steak and eggs it is! Eggs were good, waffle was good, but the CFS seemed to be one of the frozen patties. I can appreciate the cooks honesty when I arrived though so I'm at least giving 4 stars. Only other complaint was the cook did a better job serving our table than the actual server. So, extra star for the long haired guy from Beaumont. -1 star for the lady up front.
Great little dinner. The menu situation is a bit jacked up but food is excellent.
Definitely an old time style diner. The food is pretty good. The decor is just that of an old chrome diner.
I hate to do bad reviews, but you can't fix what you may not know. Our food was good, but the coffee was terrible. We were in the Army so we've had bad coffee. This was terrible. 😬 It's small, but I think there's outside seating, too. Help us help you stay in business! I would hate to encourage people to go to McDs since there isn't a lot of places to eat in Alpine. A great breakfast place would do awesome. Your competition is rude so I'd rather support you, Penny's. It was packed, but we got our food in a decent time. I did appreciate the mobile ordering, even though I prefer a menu, since it was busy. 😆 Hang in there!
The day we went they were out of many of the items on the menu. Manager went out of his way to accommodate us and make us happy. We went back 2 days later , different crew. Food was good, but the service could have been better. Not very friendly that day.
Old school diner. Next to hotel. Frequented by railroaders. Solid breakfast options. Was road tripping and needed food on our journey. College town. Love 24/7 convenience. Support local business. Skip the fast food chains.
After traveling all day we found this place and were so excited to find an old-timey diner. The inside is clean and nostalgic. Lots of counter space and seats to watch them prepare food. The food is hot and fresh. However, it’s very small portions if you have an appetite like mine. Everything appeared to be frozen and very little from-scratch made items. Frozen burger patties, instant mashed potatoes, etc. No sweet tea available is a sin in Texas. Overall we left kinda feeling “meh”. I was still hungry when leaving, but it was a neat experience and everyone was friendly.
Only 24 hr place in town for decent food. Staff is normally friendly. And the food is a little pricey.
This is one of our favorite places to eat in Alpine. I would love to give it five stars, but they are often out of regular menu items. Furthermore, I have lately seen them closed during posted business hours. This has happened several times. If they get their stuff together, I will update this rating.
Online menu's stink and the "menu" written on the board above the grill obviously did not include all their menu. They were out of several ingredients and drink selections. The food was mediocre at best and the burgers were overly cooked making them unpalatable, and the food lacked flavor all together. I would've expected more from them given the prices (reasonable) and atmosphere of the establishment, it was a disappointing visit.
Our hamburgers were edible not palatable. The onion rings had no taste. The BLT sandwich was passable. Missing more flavor.
I took a long time to get my bill. It didn't seem like a lot of people there that would take that long. I didn't really like the food. I was mediocre for all the hype I heard about the place.
Slow service, but not horrible. Just expect a wait. There's signage on every table to use the app to order. The app they want you to order from requires you sign up with name and email. Then you have to add a name for every additional person in your party so that they too can order. Huge hassle. By the time you're almost done with that and ready to pay, the waitress comes by and tells you there's No lunch available at 11:30 am on a Sunday. Breakfast only. So we had to start all over and figure out a non lunch order. The Egg sandwich with ham and tots was good. The fact lunch wasn't available at a diner earned them 3 stars instead of 4 for food. Interior was average for this non lunch diner.
Took forever to get the food and it was pretty subpar. Barely any bacon in the hash browns and the whole meal was pretty bland.
So, apparently my experience wasn't normal. They put up a closed sign while we were eating (normally a 24/7 operation) because they ran out of food. But, it would be hard to give more than 3 or 4 stars anyway. My Philly cheesesteak was okay, but my wife didn't like the Chicken sandwich, and the tots looked so bad neither one of us tried them. Also, saw other customers waiting an excessively long time for their take out order.
Service was great, but they didn't have anything. No breakfast, even though it advertises all-day service. One of us is doing Keto so breakfast works well for that. Ended up getting what they called a ground beef steak and is actually a small hamburger pattie without the bun. There was nothing special about any of the food. The server and the cook are the best attributes of the place. The server does everything, including checking people into the hotel next door.
We got here and for about 5 minutes we had to wait. As we were told. No problem. But while we were waiting, 4 more people came in and was told she’ll be right with them but no one came to us. Just the 2 of us. So we left.
We were traveling and needed breakfast prior to going to Big Bend. We walked in and were confused and no one greeted us immediately, adding to the confusion. This place was super small. No one was wearing a hairnet and the one server kept tucking her hair behind her ears while preparing food items. Unfortunately, there aren't many options for breakfast in the are, or at least what we could find in Google at the time.
Just go to Sonic, this isn't a diner experience. My partner and I ate at Penny's about 10 years ago when passing through town and had a great experience. We were passing through again and hoped to relive the experience, despite recent reviews. Unfortunately, the recent reviews are accurate. We were greeted by a waitress who had the aura that they would rather be anywhere else. We were directed to use the QR code for the menus. The sign she pointed to had three steps: open camera app, scan QR code, put in order. I tried to enter order and it wouldn't work. I asked the waitress for help and she flatly stated that she would be taking my order. Why do the instructions placed at every table say otherwise?! We placed the order. It took longer than expected to get the food, but not a horribly long time like other recent experiences. A reasonable wait in general, but surprising, as the person cooking was simply pulling out individually shrink-wrapped burgers, tots, and fries and dumping them into the fryer or placing on the grill. There was 1 waitress, 1 cook, and 1 person who appeared to mop a patch of floor at some point. They spent a fair amount to time sitting or leaning against the counter, eating, and looking at their phones. At one point, I saw one of the women use a napkin to wipe sweat off of her brow and chest, notice something on the counter, and then use that same napkin to wipe the counter. A visit to the bathrooms revealed mostly clean stalls, but one with no toilet paper. I stole 1 of 2 half-left rolls from the adjacent stall and left it there. The food was edible. The atmosphere and service was lacking. I was not expecting 5 star service, but at least folks that seemed like they wanted to do a good job. Instead, it was folks that looked unhappy and like the could muster up zero hustle. I'd recommend just going to Sonic.
My family of four walked in around 6:00 and we were never greeted although we saw 2 different people. We started sitting at the bar because all of the tables were full. The seats were all loose and very wobbly. Luckily a table opened up and then a waitress came over and got our drink order. When she brought our drinks she told us that the cook would be finishing the orders she had and then the next cook would need to clean for about 25 minutes before she could start our food. 😳🤷🏼♀️ We had been traveling all day and decided not to wait so I’m not sure about how the food would taste but we’re not willing to give it another chance.
The vegetables seemed pre frozen and about 90% of the vegetable mix was just tough broccoli stem. The potatoes were bland and seamed like they came from a box mix. Wrong gravy was given, didn’t mind since it was OKish. The red ink from the paper underneath bled all over the chicken and food. Only reason it’s getting more than a 1 star is because the staff was fairly nice. Extremely long wait time during hours it wasn’t busy. Overall it was tasteless and not worth the price nor time.I wouldn’t come here again and I’m fairly upset it cost $30 for two meals not including anything else.
I used to go here weekly about 10 years ago and loved it. 5 years ago we went and the waitress was methed out of her mind and the service and food was horrible. We were in town a few days ago and thought we would give it another try. Well the waitress wasn't high and kept my drink full but they didn't have a lot of ingredients like tomatoes for the BLT among other stuff. The lettuce on our food had black spots and edges were gross. I could go on and on. We will never go back to this place again. It's sad cause the place used to be so good and a great atmosphere.
They didn't even greet us . . The supposed chef told us it was going to be 30 minutes when part time cook could have taken care of it in 10 to 15 minutes . . Boo . . Very disappointed
The waitress did fine, but the cook was making only one thing at a time, and very slowly. There was only one other table of people when we arrived but somehow our first burger took 45 minutes to arrive. The second one ten minutes later. The food tasted okay but was very expensive and not hot. The pie was not good. Also the place was freezing cold. Im positive we would have gotten better food quicker from Sonic or DQ.
Stopped to eat as we were passing through. No stars if I could. Horrible customer service, it was like it pained the lady to take our order. Waited 1hr 1/2 for our food since they literally had 3 employees. The hostess could of got up to help instead of sitting there doing nothing and then proceeded to take 20mins in the restroom which you can see through the cracks of the stall doors (yes you can see everything). Half our party ordered breakfast but got it by lunchtime. Pancakes were okay. The cheeseburger was decent, the chicken salad was a huge disappointment. Was not as described on the menu. Would not recommend, spent a total of 2hrs here. Total waste of time and money.
Took my kid there, thought it'd be fun to show her an old school diner. Was not a good experience. Nobody even bothered to great us or come to the table. Signs said to order online, so I did. Eventually, maybe 10 minutes later, someone came and huffed at us for ordering online. Then proceeded to put a sign out that said our area of the diner was closed. The food came and it was not great, bacon seemed like yesterday's bacon, hash browns were barely cooked, dry. Should have gone to the McDonalds that my kid wanted to go to.
Took the family on a little road trip and saw this diner. Figure it would be a blast from the past and a neat experience for the kiddos. We walked in, sat down, and then waited for more than 10 minutes but still no one had stopped to ask for even our drink order. By looking around, we weren’t the only ones disappointed in the service or lack there of. It stinks that such a cute little diner with so much potential for fun experiences in a quaint little town has such horrible service.
The worst service I’ve ever had. There were 5 people in our group. 3 adults and 2 teenagers. There was no other customers in the diner at the time of our visit. The gentleman took our order and then returned with the adults food. We assumed the teens food would be right out. Since it was a small diner assumed the food had to be cooked separately. NOPE. The teens food never arrived. When we asked about it, we were told he forgot to give that part of the order to the cook! No apologies, no excuses, just oh well. We paid our bill for the food received, no discount or anything. We will NEVER go back. Sonic was 1000 times better! And that is not saying much!
If I could do 0 stars, I would. We walked in and we started to order breakfast for dinner. As we are sitting at the counter by the grill, they decided they were only going to offer burgers. They continued to make breakfast for “to-go” orders. We were confused. We waited for 45 minutes, they still hadn’t started our food and they were still making breakfast right in front of us. The people sitting next to us were there for an hour and still no food. There were about 20 people in the restaurant. When we asked if we could have pancakes, the cook was extremely rude saying there was not anymore as she pours some pancake batter out of a 5 gallon tub, mostly full. We walked out and went to Sonic…they get 5 stars.
I'm not sure how this place has any positive reviews. We felt incredibly unwelcome here and it took us an hour to get our order when we were the second set of customers in this place, two in their party and three in ours. The drinks tasted like sewage water was mixed in so we didn't even drink them. The buns tasted stale and like they were burnt. The tots and fries just taste like the stuff you buy in the frozen section of a grocery store and my child's chicken strips were burnt. The waitress never gave her the gravy that was supposed to come with them and we were missing the onion rings on our burgers. It looks adorable outside and like it would be a fun place to eat but the charm stops there. There was also so many flies! Do yourself a favor and spend your money and time elsewhere.
The reason I gave it 1 star is because we had a very sweet waitress; however, the food was worse than McDonald’s! My poor husband who was so hungry he ate it and totally regretted it all the way to the golden throne and it was multiple trips. Next time they will listen to me when I tell them it isn’t a good idea to go somewhere. My daughter only ate the tater tots and they were cooked in old grease 💩but her hamburger was so charred it was inedible☠️. Trust me when I say I am being kind with this review and take my advice and stay clear away from this place.🤮🤢👀
This had to been the worst service I ever had. We ordered our food way before other customers came in to the restaurant they gave 4 other different families that came in after us there food first before us. Just ridiculous!!!!!Seriously french toast only takes like 6 mins max to make . 35 mins later I get my food. Some of the employees here act like your the problem . Its called food service its your job serve food and be friendly. You can tell they dont like tourists. On google it was the only breakfast place in town and it was too early for Dairy Queen and Pizza Hut. Now looking around at the town there is not much here so yeah everyone stops here .You Dont really got a choice. We travel a lot and eat everywhere , this was the worst I ever had.
Strike 1: Walk in, two people woking grill and behind bar, don't acknowledge me. There were three tables seated, 7 total customers in the place. I stand at the front and look around, wondering what to do. Eventually I see on each table (not up front) a sign that says "seat yourself." Ok. Strike 2: Sitting down, I now see the sign at each table says to use your phone to scan a QR code to see what they have and to enter your order - at a tiny dinner in a rural town. No menu to look at, just your phone screen and the crappy blurry pictures they posted of each item. Ug, ok. Was looking for a little hospitality and small town service, but fine I'll just eat and go. Strike 3: Figure it out and enter my order. It requires you to select an item to see what the options were, so you had to select something to see what it comes with and what could be changed/added (sides, toppings, etc.), then remove it and select the next thing to see what it came with. I add something to my cart and try to submit the order - but now it wants me to enter a tip - before I know if they got the order right, how fast it comes out, how good it is, follow-up service - a tip for zero human interaction so far. Not even a cup of water. Not even a glance. Strike 4: Doesn't allow cash. Requires credit card. I look around and still no acknowledgment by a human. Fine. But requires me to enter my whole home address. Fine. Then requires me to enter my email address - will not process the order without that. I do not want their spam emails and other BS, and an email is not needed to process my credit card... nor is my entire home address for that matter. Strike 5: Getting frustrated I look up hoping someone will just take my order and put me out of my misery with a little hospitality, a cup of water in the heat, maybe a real menu. Now there is only one person standing behind the counter, working at the grill. Still zero human acknowledgment. Nobody to flag down. I walked out. I don't think they even knew I was there. Went down the street to another spot where I was immediately greeted as I walked in, lead to a table, given a cup of water and a menu and told about a special they had for the night. I lived in the Silicon Valley for 20 years, and even there - with super high costs, employee shortages, and tech-savvy customers - a server actually serves you unless you are in a quick serve juice or Boba shop. Even if they have QR codes and online menus, the server walks up with a menu and says "just tell me when you are ready."
Incredibly bad food. Who screws up breakfast? Penny's. I ordered standard eggs sunny side up, bacon and hash brown. The eggs were brown and crackly, the bacon 1/2 raw, and the hash brown white, nothing browned at all. The only edible part was the wheat toast. Avoid at all costs.
We came here twice during our stay in Alpine. The first time the service was absolutely terrible. Not friendly whatsoever and we had to get their attention from the back (by slighting yelling “ma’am”) to get refills because all the employees were back there laughing and cutting up. No one was upfront for a good 15 minutes. The food was actually pretty good which is the only reason we came back for a second time, hoping for a better experience. It was even worse. No one there is friendly at all and the servers act like they hate being there. They got my order wrong. My husbands order came correct but caused him stomach issue’s immediately after eating. I ordered a chocolate milkshake and it tasted so bad. I’m not usually one to leave bad reviews EVER but this was unacceptable.
I came here in 2018. It was underwhelming, I ordered hashbrowns with bacon. Within two hours, I had such terrible food poisoning, that my husband thought I was going to die. Alpine, however, is adorable. I went to a bakery the next day and was chatting with the cashier, who told me that everyone in town knows Pennys Diner is terrible. Yesterday, against my warning, some traveling family members went there. Five years after my food poisoning event, and they both got food poisoning. How are they still open? If you have to eat there, maybe just get toast.
I was not happy about several weekends I have gone wanting to eat breakfast and I wanted French toast and the waiter that attended me and my husband told us that the woman does not make the French toast which she did not want to make it. So I was very disappointed ☹️ I think I should get what I what to eat when I go there! So that’s why I’m giving a 1 star rating! to the woman that cooks some mornings on weekends! The food is great! The other cooks, waiters main manager are wonderful!
Food is gross 🤮. Making a simple grilled cheese sandwich should be a breeze, but somehow this place managed to mess it up completely. Lacking flavor and flattened to an unrecognizable thinness. Save yourself the trouble and cash. I might as well have headed to McDonald's instead.
Just ordered a to go order. The lady @ the cash register seemed to be pleasant at first. But after getting my food I asked for ketchup so she had to pour some in little containers. I specifically said “lots of ketchup.” So she only did 2, which is like 2 packets. So I said can I have a couple more and then the attitude came out. She huffed and puffed while making them out making sure I knew. Then made the comment of “Now I need to go home.” And that’s after leaving her an 18% tip just to take my order and bag it. Then when I got back to hotel I noticed they forgot to add the pancake I paid for
The cook and server seemed annoyed to help people. They kept telling customers that "it was going to be awhile". Its like they wanted the customer to just say never mind and go somewhere else. I went just for shake and she told me it was going to be awhile more than once. I wouldn't recommend this place.
Worst experience ever. Came in and ordered chicken strips and a grilled cheese. Took over 45 minutes and the waitress finally addressed it. Blamed the cook and us for ordering on the online menu and paying through it even though nothing else was said. Got our food and it was soggy bread on the grilled cheese and like warm chicken strips. Didn’t get any refills. Can definitely tell the waitress is here for a check and nothing else.
The place seriously, lack the service atmosphere and death. The food is horrible. I got a hamburger steak and extra brown gravy and it was burnt as for extra gravy and it was nowhere to be found. that’s a little place look cool kind of reminded me of a diner back home but this here definitely lacking
Unless you are hungry enough to eat some roadkill, avoid this place like the plague. No staff when we came in. When they showed up after 5 minutes, we made our order. The smoke alarm went off several times while our burgers were being prepared and were cooked to shoe leather quality. Restaurant was worn out and the floors and restrooms were filthy. Too bad, because i was excited to have lunch in a diner.
