Such a fabulous setting, we had the brisket sandwiches. Yummy and our server from Austin Towns was great. Tip you definitely need to get in early or reserve this place is very popular. It gets cool later on take a sweater. We saw these deer on the way home too. Love it!
We visited the Big Bend area a year ago and we loved it. I'm not sure how we missed this extraordinary restaurant but it was so gorgeous. The staff is great. Kudos to Christian and Bethany who made our visit spectacular. The drinks were magic and the appetizer (brisket nachos) didn't last a few minutes. We were a party of 11 and no one complained about anything. The view of the mountains is memorable and if you stay past sunset, there are tables with fire pits to enjoy. The food was absolutely delicious. Try this place before you leave the area
If you’re passing through Alpine, Texas, do yourself a favor and stop by Spicewood Restaurant. We dropped in for a late lunch and were blown away by the flavors and hospitality. We started with a cold margarita, which was perfectly balanced—just the right mix of tangy and refreshing. For food, we tried the Spicewood Nachos with Chicken and an order of Jalapeño Popper Dip, and both dishes were absolutely delicious! The nachos were loaded with toppings, with tender, flavorful chicken that took them to the next level. The jalapeño popper dip was a creamy, spicy delight, paired perfectly with crispy chips. The combination of great food, drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere makes Spicewood a standout spot. Highly recommend if you’re in the area!
Excellent food, great atmosphere. Cannot beat the green chili burger - Ties for first place with the other one in town. Food was hot and delicious, service friendly and fast. Pets are allowed on the back patio - for the people who feel they need others to be around their dog at restaurant. Top quality - Top show - One of the best venues in town.
Was a little hard to find the driveway in the dark. The building from the outside is very unassuming, but once you get in, what a place. Very open, well decorated, really nice bar area, and a great patio. Good menu with great food. We did have a small issue with the steak tips not being well done, but that was resolved in just a couple of minutes. We ended up with a corner piece for the bread pudding, it was a little cool and a little dry ( corner piece remember) but the flavor was wonderful. All in all, a great experience. We would definitely go there again when we ate in the area.
We recently used Spicewood to cater our wedding (~80 people). It was delicious! The staff was so friendly, and all of our guests commented on how great the food was! Highlights were: jalapeño cheddar grits, the poblano chicken, and the elote. Lacy was our event coordinator and couldn’t have been nicer! She’s very easy to work with, and they were extremely accommodating to any questions or changes we needed. The restaurant itself is also quite beautiful! Highly recommend.
A True West Texas Gem! Spicewood captures the spirit of Alpine with its inviting, family-friendly atmosphere, thoughtful details, and a menu that delivers. The Brisket Nachos are spot on—smoky, flavorful, and generously layered. The burgers are nothing short of outstanding, the steak tips tender and well-seasoned, and the cocktails executed with timeless precision. Copper tables and leather-bound menus add a touch of rustic elegance, while the scenic views and cool Alpine breeze create the perfect backdrop. A must-visit spot for anyone seeking elevated comfort food and warm hospitality in West Texas.
First the food was prepared perfectly and the menu has very good variety. I loved the hatch green chili cheese burger and fries... The beef patty seasoned to perfection, big pieces of green chili, fresh trimmings, juicy and the bun held it all together. My wife had the redfish with pico cream sauce and wait for it... Spaghetti squash! We sat in the covered patio facing the mountains and shared a bottle of Austin Hope Cabernet. The manager checked twice to ensure our order was to perfection and the wait staff are very friendly. Can accommodate large groups too. If you're hungry i highly recommend Spicewood.
Everything was great. One of the best "old fashions" I've had in west Texas! I had the green chili cheeseburger, everything on it was great, green chili was legit! Chicken fried steak was good, and the kids had pizza. All of it was awesome, staff was a bit slow but I went on a Friday night so I can't blame them
Everything about our experience was exceptional. Great food, great service, and lovely atmosphere. We ordered cheese pizza and catfish along with brisket queso as our starter. I also got a prickly pear margarita at a great price considering how large it was. Very impressed overall. We look forward to trying new dishes next time we're in Alpine!
Great place and the food was amazing! I ordered the Fajitas and catfish plates. The prickle pear margarita was out of this world! I had to order another one! And for dessert we had the key lime cheesecake, it came with strawberry drizzle and whipped cream on top! Delicious! I highly recommend this place!
Best food you can find in Alpine. You’ll be caught off guard by everything amazing inside, when you drive though the gravel parking lot and pull up to this unassuming metal building. The freshness and quality of food is out of this world. The watermelon and strawberry salad was big and so refreshing. The catfish plate was probably the best I’ve ever had. The pork chops were tender. The sauce on top was almost reminiscent of German food. The decor inside is gorgeous. And the staff is superb. The outside atmosphere makes you feel like you’re in a vacation resort. If possible, make reservations. Only open lunch and dinner Wednesday-Sunday. My only regret is not going back for more food or getting adult beverages. A slice of Heaven in the middle of nowhere.
Known for its warm West Texas hospitality, the restaurant serves up flavorful American cuisine with local flair—favorites include the green chile burger, seared salmon, and house-made gnocchi. The cozy atmosphere, complete with a fireplace and mountain-view patio, makes it perfect for both casual nights out and special occasions. While most reviews praise the food and ambiance, service can be hit-or-miss at times. Still, it’s a standout spot for a memorable meal in Alpine.
My friend and I passed through Spicewood on our way to Van Horn. I saw they offered a breakfast buffet so we decided to come in. After being seated by the hostess, we asked the server about the breakfast buffet where her first response was that she wasn’t sure if we could sit where they sat us to enjoy the buffet. After talking to another employee (unsure who) she came back with two plates and said we could eat there. She continued taking our drink order and we went up. The buffet was good, but limited. They provided eggs, biscuits, sausage gravy, and cubed potatoes. There may have been cereal as well. The food was standard, complimentary hotel-quality. We decided to go up for a second plate where another server said “I don’t know if you know this but you’re only allowed one plate.” Had we known we would have put a little more on our plate instead of not wanting to waste food by taking too much. Our server apologized she didn’t know the rule. She mentioned they started providing the breakfast so I presume management failed to inform their staff to ask the guests if they wanted menu service or buffet service if they indeed had separate dining areas and failed to inform the servers of the rules to let the tables know before they go up. Otherwise, our server was nice and pleasant.
Spicewood has been going downhill for over a year now. The food the last few times that I dined there was poor; however, the service was always good. I was excited to hear that they revamped the menu and changed the hours. My husband and I were going to eat lunch there; the whole experience was disappointing, to say the least. First off, they were not very busy, and it took 10 minutes just to get our drink and food order. Once we ordered our food, we waited 20 minutes. We asked the waitress about our food; after talking with the kitchen staff, she stated that it would be another 5 to 10 minutes. The waitress had an attitude, stating the restaurant was busy. Busy? The porch area was 1/2 full and no one in the main dining area. Plus, we ordered two sandwiches—nothing complicated!! We decided to leave and go to Line Thai for lunch instead. We got our food in 10 minutes, and it was great!!
Some of the food was actually pretty good, other items were not... Our jalepeno popper dip was great as was the chicken fried chicken, but that was the end unfortunately. Our hamburger steak had so much thyme seasoning on the mushrooms it was inedible. The server was terrible. She took forever to bring our drinks, never asked if we wanted another round. We ran out of water and it was never refilled. We had to signal to our server after multiple attempts to get her attention. She avoided us because we sent back the hamburger steak. Never asked if the replacement dish was good. Never came to ask us anything. She sent over different wait staff and then she walked around our table in a 3/4 circle and never once looked at us. It was so disappointing. We would have spent double in drinks, dessert etc if the service had been good. Sad because some of the was actually good and the vibe was fun. Too bad they don’t have good staff training and management doesn’t exist. Overall a big let down.
