Opinions de Yanagi Sushi & Grill Arroyo Grande
Friendly staff and excellent food. Only complaint would be that there was quite a few people in the restaurant, and it was a little loud. I think to some degree that's to be expected with a place like this. We ordered to-go order and didn't have to wait long at all.
Ordered food to be delivered by WeGo delivery business. However driver failed to deliver and would not answer phone calls to meet out front. In addition, WeGo general telephone number wouldn’t accept phone calls to resolve issue. Essentially, Do not use WeGo Delivery provided through Google Website. I believe for it be unprofessional and somewhat like a scam delivery system. Contacted restaurant and they were extremely professional and accommodated our order to be picked up again do to the faulty order placed through WeGo delivery services.
We had a $100 ticket with just two people...we ordered a lot of food; our waitress was more than attentive, she was great. Food was awesome as always. However, I do miss the 'old' way of preparing the beef teriyaki...not a huge fan of the "shreds" in teriyaki juices..
Love eating here. The staff is always prompt. Sushi chefs gets our sushi out really fast. Nice sized sushi bar. Lots of seating for teppan yaki. Lots of regular tables but no booths. If you come in for dinner definitely try to go right before sunset for a gorgeous sunset dinner. The windows are huge and since the restaurant sits on a hill it overlooks the town.
I had the NY steak and it was delicious. They served miso soup, rice, and vegitables, with the entree. Everything was amazing, the chef was funny and courteous. We brought a cake and they gave us the plates and forks and sang Happy Birthday. Sake was delicious as well. It was a Tuesday Night and very busy we had reservations and still had to wait 15mins. Make sure your whole party is there for your reservations as well or they won't seat you.
They have great sushi. The fish always tastes fresh and there is a wide variety of custom sushi rolls. This location has a sushi bar that you can sit at as well as lots of tables. There are also five or six big grills with seats all around for watching. It's a lot of fun to reserve those for something special like a birthday. The chef will come out and do some fancy cooking moves and fun stuff like making a tower of onion circles and setting the middle on fire or flinging food for you to catch in your mouth.
'21/9 1st time customer/review: -- Old school location up on the hillside with gorgeous ocean view in the near distance. -- Decent sized menu--appetizers, main course & desserts. -- Plenty seating, and loud enough can bring small children. -- Worth the trip.
We love this place. They are open every day, which seems to be rare for local sushi places. Online ordering was not available, but we were able to phone in our pick-up order. All items were fresh and made correctly. The service was good & the restaurant was clean. Visiting Yanagi was a great experience and I highly recommend.
Delicious food! Fast service & great wait staff. Even during COVID they've taken all the precautions to create a safe & great experience. We couldn't stop ordering all their delicious food. Comparable price to other restaurants like them. We sat at a table near the sushi bar (the sushi bar was closed) & ate until we couldn't eat anymore!
I have been here twice since moving to the central coast and both times have been amazing. I am not a big Sushi fan, I go for the Teppan Grill. And each time they do not disappoint. The steak is always tender and full of flavor while still cooked to my liking. I love the selection of Japanese beers they have available, I usually go with a Sapporo. The Cook's always put on a really good show. The last time we went was for date night with me and the wife. We were some of the first people there so us and one other couple got to share a cook and table. It was great his name was Tiger and this guy was hilarious. Kept cracking jokes and doing tricks with the food. He had his entertained the entire time. I am definitely going to request his table next time we go.
This restaurant is an awesome visual experience of a show when it comes to preparing the food. You will have to make a reservation in advance as to guarantee a seat but its totally worth it. The food is so tasty and hot since it's made right in front of you, the sushi bar is also a plus...I will definitely recommend and return...
This restaurant has an extremely warm and lively feeling to it. I came in just wanting some sushi and was pleasantly surprised by the habachi style entertainment in the background. Wasn't exactly what I was expecting but it was fun nonetheless. Also the staff behind the sushi bar and the waiters were very kind and nice to talk to, and the food was good so the whole experience was enjoyable.
Fresh ingredients. Creative rolls. Great performances from the Teppanyaki stations, although I was at a dining table. Overall I'd say the best thing about the place is that no matter how busy they are, you get great service and you never feel too crowded.
Great Food, nice staff, could use a better exterior appearance. Nothing like the quality of food and service when you get in the door. Don’t judge a book by its cover!
We sat at a standard table with a party of 5 after the AGHS Graduation. It's a fairly small spot, was booked, but hostess and server were both polite and hustling. I'm not a fan of sushi, but they have other menu items. I had some combo plate with ribs and rib eye. It was good. My wife and son and other guests had sushi, all enjoyed it. Our service was impressive as they were busy. I would recommend.
Always good atmosphere and good food.
We took our 2yo and did the teppan table and it was amazing! Our chef and server were so great and truely made the experience amazing! Thanks to all the great staff and yummy food, it was perfect!
Awesome food! Definitely going to go back
We were hungry so stopped at this place. Had to wait 20 min. but it was worth the wait. the samon coller was extreamy tasty. The sushi with the garlic chips was surprisingly tasty. They had great customer service. No pictures because we were hungry.
We went for my husband's birthday and the chef was AMAZING! And we had a really lovely table as well. Bringing our 3 and 5 year old, they enjoyed the entire experience. We highly recommend it!
Just had dinner here with friends for a birthday party, and as always service was amazing. The chef at our table was incredibly talented and charming, the staff always treats us well. The food was to die for, some of the best steak, tuna and friend rice I've had. The view from the restaurant of the sunset really made the whole night that much better. 10 out of 10 would recommend.
Wonderful experience!! Food is absolutely scrumptious, the staff is personable and funny. I've been to a lot of Japanese restaurants and this is by far the best. Even the baby had fun! Definitely worth a try. But don't eat the rice too quick or you'll be too full to finish all the yummy food.
We ate at the tappan table. Husband ordered shrimp & got the fried rice. I had the New York steam & steamed rice. Service was great. We got a seat without reservations & sat right down. I think we just lucked out on our timing & it was 8:30pm. Food was all delicious. Chef was fun. Steak was tender. Shrimp was a good size with great flavor. The 2 dinners, a Stone IPA, & a hot tea ran $75. $90 with tip. So not for the light of wallet. Hot tea was $2. Seems like it should be part of the experience since the traditional cups are small & you're asked if you want more as your ready to leave. But that's my own opinion & minor complaint.
Great view, friendly staff, good food. The hot sake machine was broken but our server agreed to heat it up the old fashioned way for us barbarians. Cook was friendly and engaging. I do wish they offered cocktails but that's a mjnor quibble. Highly recommend.
I love going here. I have been twice now. Both times the staff were wonderful. Full of life and I didn't see one of them in a bad mood. I thought maybe one of them was but he just had a sickly awesome sense of humour. I would definitely recommend going here around dinner time. It's usually the time we go. Really they are amazing and they have the grill in the middle of the room so you can watch the magic!
If you’re looking for quality and flavor, this is the place. Everything was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented.
One of the best sushi restaurants Iv ever been to! Super fast service, me and my friend got our food within 5 minutes of ordering and it was amazing. We didn’t have a reservation and they seated us right away. Very nice service and employees! Efficient, clean and a great place to have dinner!
We went last night and the staff was unbelievable and so was the food. They were on top of everything and so nice to the kids. A well deserved 5 stars. We will be coming back for sure!
Enjoyed our evening, food was excellent and delicious! Our chef was very gracious and personable. Great service. All our dishes were cooked to perfection!
I was there having my bday dinner the other night. I worked in customer service for many years so I know what’s good and what’s not in service. We luckily had a server named Judah. This young man was so awesome! He was very attentive and friendly and he was overall amazing at his job! He had such a great personality too. Thank Judah for your great customer service. I hope you get a raise! You deserve it. :)
Quick, delicious. You know the sushi gonna be good when they don't invest that much in interior decorating. The Ahi Tower was fun and tasty
Let me start off by saying the atmosphere is amazing! They have large windows that overlook the city which makes for a beautiful view of the sunset when we dined in the evening. This was our first time here and the food was impeccable. The salmon is SO fresh and melts in your mouth. Presentation is 10/10. My boyfriend enjoyed their chicken teriyaki as well. The food and atmosphere was so great that I texted all my friends and family after about them NEEDING to try this place. Sushi is by far my favorite food and we frequently try new places, and this restaurant has the BEST fish. Definitely top 2 best sushi restaurants I’ve been to.
Love eating here! The teppanyaki is delicious and so is the sushi. Everything is so fresh and the service is great! The teppanyaki is a little pricey but definitely worth it, the chefs are very interactive with everyone and make it really enjoyable. Some of my favorite rolls are; the garlic chip roll, baked dynamite roll, Baja yellowtail roll, and the red dragon roll. For Teppan I like the NY steak and shrimp combo with fried rice. The restaurant is huge, great for large parties. If you plan on going on a Friday or Saturday night make sure to call ahead and reserve a spot. Lastly the view is breathtaking we sat at the grill for dinner and watched the sunset.
We picked a wrong night as it was noisy beyond belief due to a hughe homecoming crowd. However the food was good and authentic. The staff were friendly, and once we were seated our meal was served quickly.
Iv been here several times as I only lived a few blocks from it and I have to say it is a great place to take your significant other or a date. really fun atmosphere with the hibachi and the chefs were super nice. its fun to watch them cook it up in front of you. The sushi was average but everything else was great. The best thing though, the view. amazing.
Great food. Fun experience if you sit at the "chop chop table" as we call it. It's a bit pricey but very fun. You sit with other people but the chef keeps you having fun. The chop chop chefs make it fun for all. It can be loud in there so don't expect intimate conversations. Have some sake, a beer, and some good food but again, it can be expensive.
First, as with any place in this area, check with the server to make sure the prices in the menu are accurate. Got charged a dollar more for one item, didn't complain. We had a couple of plates, enjoyed them all. The place is nice, staff is attentive and friendly, and they offer Teppan style table service. We had The Hot Dynamite (Jalapeños), cucumber roll, #88-noodles, chicken and shrimp dish, and a garden salad. All really delicious.
The place was deserted when we got there but it was also a very early time .or we were having a very late lunch We did not check what time they open. The attendant was very pleasant and was always on stand by whenever we needed something. Food was great, fresh and the right portion. The only thing we would say is that they should have a lunch time specials that regular lunch crowds can afford.
Great food & great service. They make it fun to take sake bombs.. I recommend getting a table at the grill. The cook shows off his skills & makes jokes. Great for the kids, or if u wanna have some fun with friends.
Rolls were good, but I've had better. Prices were outrageous, it was $100 for me my husband and our 3 year old. We were the only ones there so service was good, they were bored so we were WELL taken care of lol
Nice experience with a group of 10. Friendly chef, and an entertaining evening.
Best places one of my favorites but something's going on I'm not too sure things have changed slightly on the downside.
Very good. Our teppan cook was great. Food was great. View was awesome. Had the teppan lobster, filet mignon, shrimp, and chicken in our party. Had the yanagi sushi roll - awesome! Wish they had noodles as an option instead of just rice for teppan. Wish they had a full bar. They also need more teppan grills/tables. We had to make a reservation for the next night.
good food, nice staff but odd how many different staff members kept coming to the table asking the same questions. environment could use a good deep cleaning, maybe a remodel. kinda run down in a bad way. floor look unsanitary. food was very good but environment sucked not to mention how run down the outside of the building looks.
Our chef was super friendly and engaging. It was graduation weekend so they were super busy. Luckily we had made reservations 2 weeks early or we would never have gotten in. The waitress and the chef were top notch. The hostess at the front handled things very well with all that was going on. The filet mignon, the salmon and the chicken our group had was all great. Tried a bit of someone's top sirloin and it was below par. Fried rice worth the extra $3. Overall had a great time.
Pretty disappointing to be honest. The Hot Night Roll was a hot mess. Maybe I just don't care for spicy oil, but all other flavors were over powered by its smell and taste. Also got the Chicken Teriyaki Bowl. The chicken was dry and unflavored other than the sauce and the rice was mushy. Overall the food was just average at best, at least for this dining experience.
A wonderful location in Pismo Beach indeed. The Sushi is good quality/ The tempura is also of good quality. The service is quite slow, and even in a near empty restaurant, it is challenging to get someone's attention. Oh Well, this can and should improve. Thanks Anyway
For those ordering sushi or fried rice, the food was good. Two of us had beef. Mine was beef teriyaki and was to be cooked to medium. Both our beef dinners were meat that had that warmed over taste and was over cooked. We had a server that was training and did very good. I would suggest not ordering beef unless it's at the grill.
My husband and I took our son to Yanagi Sushi & Grill on Oct. 6th for a birthday dinner experience at the Tappan table. We got there at 5 PM and put our name in for the first seating at 6 PM. We were sat where the hostess wanted us to sit and not where we wanted to sit. we’re told we had to wait and see if someone else who might show up does actually show up because she has chosen the seats we wanted to seat these people who never did show up. Unbelievable! She already knew we were celebrating a birthday too. The food was okay. I tasted more soy sauce than the food. Maybe I already had a bad taste in my mouth from the seating arrangements.
The food was ok, they had a lot of items were available and had to resort to other food options.
The last couple of times I ordered the food wasn't the freshest. Also, I had to wait more than 15 min for my pickup order even though they texted me that my order is ready for pick up. Also, they do not allow desserts for pickup. If you want dessert, you have to reserve a table and dine there...
Overall this can be a fun place to go on special occasions. The food and overall service is mediocre as well as the restaurant. I think it has to do with since it is unique idea and can charge a lot you don’t really need to up one’s game to bring people in. As with any popular restaurant in our area and tourist focused there is no reservations (and they just don’t pick up the phone) and even if you get there when open up you still might have to wait. The cooking is fun if get a good cook and the food is not bad and I try not to give it extra points when super hungry. Lots of potential and can be fun on special occasions. However, a bit overpriced for what you get in service and food.
So disappointed. Everything was extra, and not in a good way. Miso soup for kids, additional charge. Fried rice, $3 additional charge per person and they don't have bacon in the rice or any real vegetables. Our cook was very nice but the food was flavorless and the pace was rushed. I can't think of any reason that we would return.
Food was fine. Performance was sub par. No knife skills or showmanship. Sat with a bunch of drunks that were aggressive toward my family and pouring sake all over the grill. The whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth for my daughter's birthday.
2 stars because food is good. But why the low score? I literally spend about $1000 a month here. Been a regular. I said don’t put sauce on one roll and just give it to me on the side. Well. When I picked up my food. They said they have to charge me $1 for a sauce. I said it comes with the roll. They said since I said on the side they have to charge me.... I was so disappointed. I’ll never spend another dollar here again.
food good. worst stomach ache of my life after .
Very disappointing. Have been going there off and on for several years. Quality has varied from time to time. Service usually good. This time both the service and food were substandard. Server spent more time on their phone and talking with their co-workers. The fish had a lot if connective tissue (like gristle on a steak). That was my last visit to the Pismo Beach. Recently, I visited the Santa Maria restaurant and experienced the same poor service and food quality. Probabably will not be returning there anytime soon. Too bad, they were a good restaurant.
I am truly disappointed at Yanagi sushi and grill. My party had a reservation at 7:00pm and unfortunately, we arrived just six minutes late. Upon arrival, we were told that our table had already been given away, without any prior notice or courtesy call. I understand that punctuality is important, but given that we were only slightly delayed, it was extremely frustrating to be turned away without so much as a warning. A simple phone call would have allowed us to adjust our plans accordingly rather than arriving just to be dismissed. We were 9 in the party and it felt uncomfortable to have to adjust our plans for such a slight delay. What made the situation even more frustrating was that the owner did not communicate with us directly. Instead, the host was simply instructed to pass on the message that our table was no longer available. This lack of direct communication felt dismissive and unprofessional, especially considering we were only slightly delayed. A simple courtesy call would have made a significant difference in our experience. We were looking forward to dining at your establishment, and this experience has left us feeling undervalued as customers. I hope you will reconsider how you handle situations like this in the future to ensure better customer service. I am writing to inform you that if you arrive a few minutes late for your reservation, your table may be canceled and given to another party without prior notice or a courtesy call.
Our visit to this place was very embarrassing. The server made a big mistake that we didn't catch until he came back and said that wasn't your order. We usually order new foods and we thought we had gotten the correct meal. The server said "it's okay you can have it on the house." and a minute later he came back and as we had already taken a bite he then took our food away. This was embarrassing every one was looking at us and some even pointed. This is the first and last time we dine at this place!
If I could rate this place a zero I would. First save your $$$ this place is literally disgusting. The food is less than mediocre and the womens restroom was dirtier than an outhouse. When I requested to speak to the manager all this person had to say was make excuses on how they don’t have a female to clean the restrooms. I couldn’t believe the response I was given when I brought up their disgusting restroom. What a waste of an evening out!
SORRY for this review my fellow Pismo friends. I would'nt even give this restaurant any star but must give 1 star to even get my message across. WHAT happened to this restaurant since Jay sold it is beyond us ? NO more warm welcome by all employee's. 3-26-19 We decided to hit the Sushi bar for an evening of "fun" and have a great sushi meal. Well that didn't happen! The last meal we shared was the worst experience we've ever had at this sushi bar. I'm not complaining about the cost, it's all part of the sushi order~ I'm talking about the Atmosphere. Way back when it was booming with business. All the sushi chef's would normally greet you, make each guest feel like part of the "adventure" while they were cutting away creating beautiful dishes which would encourage us to remain seated and even spend more money just to stay and enjoy ourselves with a great meal - not this time. - no conversation among sushi chefs to the people sitting in front of them. COLD just cut, serve and move on. Our "fun" filled evening sitting at the bar was just eat and leave. That will be the last time we will be spending our time and money at this restaurant. Yamato's here we come !!!!!
I was really looking forward to a takeout meal at yanagi after reading and hearing such good things about it but I was completely disappointed. We ordered, 2 teriyaki bowls. One beef one chicken. Where to start? The chicken was so dry that I felt like choking as it was going down. The beef was a bit better but both lacked flavor....certainly not the good teriyaki flavor which I would expect a place like yanagi should be able to deliver. The rest of the meal was small bits if broccoli which I assumed were frozen on a bed of gummy rice....again choking to get it down. And this cost us 30 bucks.!!! I write this to give an honest perspective of our experience among all of the favorable reviews. If yanagi is reading this maybe try would like to give us a complimentary second try. I think we deserve it. Terry Parry
Went there for a birthday celebration. We were ignored by the front desk help. Then the manager refused to seat us til our full party was there. Part of our party was 3 minutes late and the manager decides to tell us he refuses to seat us now because we took too long. Instead of just letting us wait to be seated at a later time, he refused service to us completely for the rest of the night. He was super rude and unprofessional and lost 10 customers last night. Never going there again.
Called and made a reservation for 4 ppl for my daughters birthday, got there only to be told sorry we can only accommodate 3 not 4. Don't go here! Very unprofessional, rude and ruined my daughters birthday.
As soon as we saw the trash overflowing at the entrance and trash all over the parking lot we were concerned. It didn’t help that when we entered it had a foul smell inside. We were told that reservations were required even though there was only 5 people there. The rest was empty. Didn’t make me feel good wondering if they didn’t care to pick up the trash when you entered what other hygiene items were they skipping….at a sushi place…. Save your time. Skip this place
We just waited an hour and a half for a table, came back when the hostess told us to and she proceeded to tell us there were “no cancellations” so we had to wait another hour. Meanwhile, the whole lobby smelled like rotten eggs because of an obvious sewage issue. We had to use the restroom and it smelled so bad we could hardly stand it. Appetite ruined. Needles to say, we left. Strongly do not recommend. This restaurant USED to be one of the best in down. We are so disappointed.
I will never eat at this location again. It wasn't pleasant, it wasn't worth it, and we won't be back. I didn't feel like we had servers as much as we had sharks circling us, wanting us to leave quickly, rushing us so we didn't enjoy our dinner. We didn't feel like guests but unwanted squatters. We have been here many times, though not for the past few years, and previously we loved the atmosphere, the service, and the food. At our most recent visit, I have never felt so unwelcome and rushed at a restaurant in my life. They seated us before our whole party arrived even though we told them we didn't mind waiting for the others. Thus began a high-pressure dining experience. They kept asking us to order even though our party was incomplete. They told us to *take a picture of the menu, text it to our friends, and have them text their order* so the waitstaff could put it in. We said no, and that we would prefer to go back to the waiting area and wait for our friends rather than order without them. Looking back, I wish at this point that we had said no thanks, paid for our drinks, and left the restaurant. When our friends came, (please note, this was only about 20 minutes after we were seated), the waitstaff began pressuring them to order immediately. They pressured us again to order our food before our friends were ready. We were polite but we refused firmly. The server stared the guests down till they ordered drinks, and pressured them to order their food immediately. They had never been to this restaurant before and needed to look at the menu. The server did not explain the menu to the new guests, they just stood off to the side less than ten feet from our table and right in front of us, and stared at us as our friends looked at the menu for a few minutes. The server was visibly tense and kept clicking their pen almost nonstop. Once we ordered, the two servers who had pressured us the most brought us drinks and refills but mostly just stood off to the side doing nothing. The chef who cooked our meal at the grill was friendly and nice and our food was very good. We finally started to relax and we enjoyed our food. (If this was a rating just for him and the food, it would be 4 stars.) The minute we were done eating the last bite from a plate or dish, they would come to take it. Then they promptly dropped our check. We paid it and thought they would finally leave us alone and let us visit with our friends, who we hadn't seen for awhile. I had planned to stop by the host stand and tell the manager about the poor experience with two of the servers in particular. But after we had sat and visited for a little while with our friends, the manager came up and asked us to leave! She said that they had other guests to serve. I looked around at all the empty tables and empty grills and asked if they could use the other tables. She said no. They were not going to use those tables. Nobody was in the waiting area. Only three or four tables were seated in the whole restaurant, and two or three people were coming in as we left. But they asked us to leave to "make room for more customers". The food itself was good, although the prices have nearly doubled in the last few years. The service, though, is some of the worst I have ever received at a sit-down restaurant. This restaurant is permanently off my list of places I want to eat again.
I ordered several items to go. They came with no wasabi or ginger. So I had to go back and request these items. The albacore delight tastes like cat food. We did not eat it. The ichie roll was not much better. Overall we will not go back and waste our hard earned money there ever again. Very disappointed.
Staff should be able to communicate with customers better. We were told it would be a 40 min wait by two different employees and neither asked if we were there for the grill or a normal table. This ultimately resulted in us waiting 40 mins to leave because they had no table availability. Horrible management and failure in basic communication.
I’m upset. We came here to celebrate my daughter’s 13th birthday. When I initially made the reservation for the hibachi grill I had said we would be 13 people and they said 7 people would need to order from the grill. So we ended up having 12 people. After everyone had ordered, 6 people had ordered from the hibachi grill. She said we needed 7. We asked if we could just stick with our current orders. We had ordered some nice sushi, and honestly spent way more than any grill meal. No, we had to have 7 people. I had talked to her about flexibility when I placed the order, and she specifically said they would be flexible by one person, so why make such a big deal after everyone had ordered! So we changed one ordered canceled the sushi we actually wanted. After that, the server never came back. The service was awful! We wanted to order more drinks and couldn’t find her. I had brought a cake for my daughter’s birthday and ended up asking the hostess for help two different times! Then when it came time to split the bill, we wanted it split in three, and she split it in two and totally wrong. At that point I was so upset we just paid and left. We spent over a thousand dollars for an awful experience! Why? She ruined our dinner and our birthday for no reason. What happened to being gracious and flexible?
Tasty food, but my cook seemed to favor a young lady at the table and her kids and gave them most of the food on the grill. Someone should definitely have a talk with the chef’s because that was not right. I barely got any food for spending $50-60 a dish was very disappointed especially when having to pay a $230 bill. Not planning to go back.
DO NOT EAT HERE! We got food poisoning here last night and my whole family has been sick. Ruined thanksgiving and my mom’s birthday.
Terrible service every time I’ve been. Walked in for my brothers bday reservation 5 min late and was rushed into ordering drinks and meals without getting a chance to really look at the menu. We walked out and went to sushi 805 for a superior menu and service. This was our last attempt with this place, as there has been an issue every time.
I rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience here was surprisingly unpleasant. Our server, Amy C., repeatedly slammed the plates, food, and even the check onto our table without a word—creating a tense and rushed atmosphere that made it hard to enjoy our meal. On top of that, when we kindly asked an Asian waitress if she could take a quick photo for us, she refused without explanation. It felt cold and dismissive, especially when a simple gesture like that could’ve made the experience more memorable in a positive way. The food itself was decent, but hospitality and service matter just as much—and sadly, both were lacking during our visit.
