Aesthetically charming with a warm, rustic feel, this restaurant welcomes you in with the most inviting aroma drifting from the open kitchen — an experience before you even take your first bite! After sampling several dishes, the standouts were the oysters (and I’m not typically a seafood enthusiast), the beef tartare, and the Rhubarb burger. Each plate delivered refined, well-balanced flavors with a clean, fresh finish that truly impressed the palate. The thoughtful sourcing of ingredients from local farms and purveyors adds another layer of excellence. It’s clear that intention, care, and passion are woven into every detail — from the culinary artistry to the overall operation of the space. I’m thrilled to see this impeccable establishment thriving and will absolutely be returning. Highly recommend for anyone who appreciates elevated flavors in a beautifully curated setting! 💥👏🏼
We had a great experience here for Restaurant Week. On a cold night, we enjoyed the cozy atmosphere, had amazing service from Andy, and were able to try so many different things from the menu with their flexible “Creat Your Own Tasting Menu” special. We will definitely be back to support this wonderful restaurant! A few pictures of the Sumac House Chips with trout dip, fried quail with a delicious mustard slaw, and the pork loin.
This is absolutely the best food we have had not only in Asheville but anywhere in a while. Oyster Benton, exquisite, chicken liver mousse I would order again and again. The bread is baked fresh daily and it showed. Would go back again and again for those three things, but the strip steak was tender and perfectly prepared and paired nicely with the veggies. You only have to taste the food to know this is a true farm to chef to table. This is a not to miss restaurant. Wine selection is worthy of the 5 star dining. Our server Trey was hospitable and made great suggestions for us. We will be back. . . Often.
Fresh, seasonal, thoughtful dishes all around. Just what you’re hoping for in an American eatery of this caliber. Our server was helpful and kind. When you’re a tourist, even after multiple visits to an area, it’s easy to have decision fatigue by dinner, but the hospitality we experienced was thoughtful and generous. The Spoonbread Pancake was delicious and unlike anything we’d ever had before. Everything about it was wonderful, the texture, flavors and the ham was richly salty without being overwhelming. The Summer Vegetable Salad was just perfect with crunchy romaine and inspirational bread crumbs. Though it was my least favorite dish of the meal, because it didn’t blow my mind the same way all the other dishes did, the Half Chicken was well prepared, a balanced combination of richness from the rice and chicken, brightened by the sauce and rhubarb. We enjoyed two desserts, which ended up being more dessert than we needed. :) My favourite was the Panacotta but I think the Chocolate Cake was my husband’s favorite. It was amazingly flavorful and decadent.
Our rehearsal dinner experience was nothing short of incredible! From the moment we walked through the doors of the venue, we knew we were in for a treat. Every aspect of the evening exceeded our expectations and set the tone for our upcoming wedding day. The venue itself was absolutely stunning. The ambiance was warm, inviting, and exuded an elegant charm that perfectly matched our wedding theme. I especially thought it was cool to enter the room through the back kitchen area. The four table layout was great for dividing our party and making everyone feel at home, plus it gave us space to make a few speeches. The staff went above and beyond to ensure that every guest felt welcomed and comfortable. They were attentive, friendly, and genuinely invested in making our evening memorable. The level of professionalism displayed by the entire team was commendable, and their dedication to providing top-notch service was evident throughout the entire event. This was the case from the very first inquiry, with a highly professional response rate. They were so easy to work with! The food was fantastic. The cheerwine braised short ribs were tasty and tender. Everyone loved the pimento cheese hush puppies. We liked that it was served family style, so the whole meal was approachable for all kinds of people. The choice of drinks was plentiful with emphasis on local beverages. They also made some tasty mac n cheese for the kids. We also had them make our wedding cake (after getting no responses from other local vendors). The cake was simple, three-tiered and so delicious. It was great to combine vendors and also made transporting the cake to our venue easy. Lastly, the overall organization and flow of the event were flawless. The event coordinators were attentive and ensured that our needs were met throughout the evening. Our rehearsal dinner experience was truly extraordinary, and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect prelude to our wedding day. We are immensely grateful to the entire team for their dedication, professionalism, and passion in creating an unforgettable evening for us and our loved ones. We wholeheartedly recommend this venue to anyone seeking an exceptional rehearsal dinner experience that will leave lasting memories. Thank you again to everyone involved for making our rehearsal dinner an absolute dream come true! Outstanding communication, service and food. A++
We drove 1.5 hours from Beech Ski Mountain to try this food. And we are not disappointed at all. It was St. Valentines Day , so it’s understandable that we waited for our reservation 1.5 hours. But it was worth it. We had 5 courses menu and it was amazing. My favourite items were mushroom oysters and poached egg in red wine sauce. Everything was so delicious.
Came here for dinner with friends. Able to get seating for a group of 9. The food was great. Mushroom appetizers and sweet potato fries with egg were good. The mushrooms were very meaty. I had the whole chicken which was really good. I usually don't get chicken entrees at restaurants, but I'm happy glad I did. The desserts were great too.
Delicious dishes with wonderful service! Absolutely will come back as the menu changes with the seasons. No wait for two on a rainy Thursday. Wine pairings were perfect and cocktails were refreshing. Pricey but worth it, especially with sourcing locally
A lovely spot for some local delicacies. Highlights and celebrates local farms and producers. The staff was extremely insightful and charming with their familiarity with the menu. I’d strongly suggest the carrots, trout, and the bread service. The strawberry sundae was incredibly comforting and nostalgic.
Amazing evening. Had a 7:30 reservation and we were promptly seated. Rhubarb definitely lived up to its reputation. Our waitperson, Carrie was incredible and so were all the other staff. The gnocchi, the hoecake, the short rib, and the pimento cheese hush puppies were all excellent. Last but not least, the blueberry “mess”, what a fun and delicious combination of flavors and textures. Thanks Rhubarb.
I ate at the chef's bar to have dinner and a show. Wow, these people make it look effortless. Everything was delicious and I wish I had more room to try more dishes! I started with the burrata, the roasted carrots, the half chicken and the forraging for flowers panna cotta desert. Everything was delicious with fresh touches and large portions. Make a reservation and don't miss this when you are in Asheville!
Great hospitality! The location is perfect for wandering around town or going to The Orange Peel concert. Our server knew the menu well, and he was extremely attentive to food allergies. The menu is fresh, creative, and evolving in a way that is awe-inspiring and mouth watering. It is fantastic to find a restaurant with locally sourced ingredients. The lobster mushrooms are something you cannot easily find, and they were expertly prepared. In fact, everything we had was perfectly flavored and seasoned. The collards were the best I have ever had. The chicken was simple and delightful - light after having ordered many courses yet matched with hearty Fall sides. The apple-ginger-tarragon soda is a great flavor, both as a start and an end to the dinner. The wine list has a variety of well-chosen, eclectic selections by bottle or glass. The Amaro list provides a variety of options for all tastes as well. We cannot wait to return to Rhubarb!
My son took me to Rhubarb for my birthday. It was wonderful. Great area of Asheville in a cool historic building. The food was tasty, have the pimento cheese hushpuppies! The chicken, mushrooms were well seasoned and yummy. You have to get a banana pudding! If you only go in for coffee and dessert, don't pass up the banana pudding! The pastry creme, fresh bananas and vanilla wafers were all a perfect balance of flavors!!! The summer cocktail was delicious!! Enjoy!!!!
Novel combinations of taste, experiential quality above quantity. The food was so rich, flavorful and uniquely styled that you don't feel compelled to devour, rather savor. My dining partner described the overall style as "forage-y," and that's a pretty accurate statement and more delicious than one might rightfully expect given such an appellation. The goat cheese burrata was a highlight, and the flat iron steak did not disappoint either. Angel food cake was uniquely prepared and fun to eat. With the overall bill being about $80 a person it's not cheap, nor does the rustic ambience necessarily justify the price. But if it's a fresh farm to table culinary adventure you seek, one with twists turns and deliciousness hiding in unexpected places, give it a try!
Incredible food, the kindest and most knowledgeable staff (thanks, Riley!), and a cozy, classy setting to celebrate our bride. We l ORD everything we ordered but the steak, the pimento cheese hush puppies and the goat cheese burrata were especially delicious. PLENTY of non-alcoholic mock tails too, which was highly appreciated! Will be back!
This was an exceptional meal that was one of the best in the city. The burata was very rich and paired so well with the peppers and olive oil. The red beans and mushroom dish was layered with so many ingredients, and every one had a unique flavor and texture. The squash was sweet and salty, and the fig was a remarkable bite, but the mushrooms were the star. There were easily 5 different varieties in the dish punctuated with parsley and taragon. Finally, the peach panacota was drizzled with sweet and strong bourbon sauce. The service was personal and attentive. A real outstanding meal.
Rhubarb surpassed our expectations! Not only was all the food delicious we were so happy with the event space too. The space was perfect for our group and absolutely gorgeous! The food was elegant, fresh, and delicious. We had a great time in the space and enjoyed the smell of the bakery the whole time! It's a great sized space with lots of character and as food photographers we value Rhubarb's attention to detail and elevated plating. All of their dishes were exciting to photograph and even better to eat! We will defiantly be back! @foodphotograpphycorner
10/1/2023 stopped here for dinner. Farm to table type restaurant and it was definitely the Asheville vibe! Our service was phenomenal! We ordered the hominy appetizer, collard salad which was interestingly delicious. For the main dishes we had the pork chop and the trout. The collard salad was interesting because I could never imagine using collards as salad but it was delicious, minus the stems! Don’t eat the stems they are bitter. The crispy hominy appetizer was unique and delicious. The pork chop was very good! It was tender and perfectly seasoned. It came with two charred peppers (needed more charring) and cider braised cabbage (not that good), purée of potatoe and some peacans. The trout was my favorite. I had two pieces on my plate but I wish it was the whole fish! The pieces were too small but made for a light meal on my drive back home. On the menu they show the farms they get their food from. We did not get any dessert, I has a mcflurry on the way up. I would recommend this place but be open minded to the different flavors and textures of the food! My total bill was $100 and some change. The bill seemed appropriate for the farm to table food you’re getting.
Stunning cosy spot. The food was 10/10. We had the goats cheese buratta to start with apples and pears. Then we had the shrimp and blue crab as well as the seared trout fillet and the chocolate mousse. This was enough to share between 3 of us and be very full! Highly recommend and some of the best food we have had in America. It tastes fresh and well seasoned. The gaps in the bathroom stalls are WILD. You can see people using the bathroom, this was the only criticism.
Unique and seasonal menu with great service in a really cool setting. The location is amazing and the decor is rustic and perfect for the farm-to-table concept. Their take cornbread was very interesting and super tasty. The gnocchi was a little different in that there wasn't much of a sauce with it. Not necessarily a bad thing, just a little different than what we expected. The half chicken was amazing though. We rarely order chicken at a restaurant but this was done to perfection. Served in a baking dish, it is plenty of food for two plus leftovers. Smyly was our server and he was fantastic. I highly recommend Rhubarb!
We had our wedding celebration here in the event space. I would highly recommend Rhubarb to anyone looking to have a small, relaxed gathering for their wedding. The space is beautiful and needs minimal decor. The food and drinks were great; we were very impressed. Our guests all had a wonderful time, and the location made it easy for them to enjoy other Asheville spots before and after the dinner.
High expectations going in and Rhubarb did not disappoint! Fabulous dining. Goat burrata was fantastic and whole trout was off the hook with celeriac, sunchokes, braised radicchio. Wow. Dessert was an amazing Panna cotta.
This place was great. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We started with some drinks and hush puppies, which came with a nice flavored butter. I had the pork loin and it was seasoned perfectly to go with the rice, and vegetables. For dessert we had the strawberry mousse cake. The compote was delightful and had a very well developed strawberry flavor. Their menu may be small, but from what I tasted, they have perfected their dishes.
First but not last visit at this place. We got the prime seats for our date, watching chefs in action. Food was with excellent flavors and combinations that will blow your mind. A couple joined us and they are regulars and their favorite place if a local from the 70’s says that imaginé the weight of their opinion. We enjoyed learning how Asheville area has evolved during those decades. Suggested to make reservations.
We were lucky to sit at the Chefs Table. Food and atmosphere were awesome, and service was incredible. They split our entree into 2 as well.
What a gem! We had the tastiest sweet potato of our lives as well as the best carrot dish ever! The owner and chef even made time to chat with us as we're here from Canada on a foodie tour of NC. Great people, relaxing atmosphere and stand-out food...don't miss it.
If you have an affinity for pickled foods like sauerkraut or kimchi, then you will love Rhubarb. Most of their foods were a blend of unique salty and savory. The flat iron steak was tough, which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 for food. Other than that, it was great.
We went on a foraging tour (No Taste Like Home), and Rhubarb partnered with them to cook some of the food we foraged for us! It was a really cool experience, and the chefs knocked it out of the part. The food and experience were amazing and unique.
Wonderful atmosphere and service. I enjoyed trying a new wine and the charcuterie board offered plenty of goodies for me to dive into. There was a vegetarian option for my entree - which was beautiful and delicious - though I hoped for something a little more "complex" than a sweet potato in a cocktail dress. That was still deserving of a solid 4 stars, and my overall experience was enough to convince me to recommend this beautiful establishment.
Amazing atmosphere, food, and cocktails. Highly recommend the goat cheese burrata, quail with grits, and gnocchi. Also recommend the old fashioned, house special Negroni, and house special Moscow mule (the cardamom was an amazing touch!). Dessert was cinnamon cake with brandied apples - hit the spot but not out of this world. Great location in downtown Asheville for a date night or time out with friends with easy access to other bars and restaurants. Highly recommend
This is the best place we ate in a month in Asheville. Everything was good. The dishes were well-balanced and combined local, farm fresh ingredients in creative and thoughtful ways. Wonderful date night spot.
This is easily one of the top three places I have ever eaten in my entire life! The food was exceptional, the service was fantastic, and the atmosphere was perfect. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. The food pairings are phenomenal with a farm to table setting. We will return often!
We spent some time in Asheville this past year, and had a great culinary experience at Rhubarb. The flavors and fancy were to die for. The farm to table mentality was right on target. Also, our waitress (and staff) talked with us just enough. Left us alone at the right times.
Wonderful spot! We were there for brunch on a Saturday and would recommend that you call ahead and get reservations. Interesting combinations for breakfast. Would recommend order several dishes and sharing and mixing the sweet and savory palette offered.
Excellent farm to plate fare in a casual upmarket setting. The whole trout is not what I’d ordinarily order, but I took a gamble on it being made well. It paid off!! Good cocktails also.
Wonderful restaurant situation in the echo capital of the city. There is a nice bench that homeless people like to smoke on right near the entrance, giving the atmosphere a special quality you tend to miss at other establishments. The waiter was nice and robotic, seemingly uninterested in providing any hospitality which really brought back fond memories of dining in at McDonald's. The food was absolutely wonderful aside from a few exceptions that one palete may prefer over another. The hushpuppies were excellent, filled with pimento cheese and served with a spicy dipping sauce. Oysters Benton came out a bit salty due to the ham used, but a dash of hot sauce and lemon juice fixed that. The highlight was the trout with its crispy skin hiding a delicately prepared body. Overall, I would highly recommend sitting inside.
We had shrimp, gnocchi, and hush puppies for appetizer. The portions were small but delicious. For dinner, we had the field Pea Hoppin' John (vegetarian) and the seared Grouper filet, which was little dry. Overall, it was a pleasant experience - impressed with the female chef team and the service.
Wish I took more photos because the place was decorated well inside. Right downtown by shops and hotels. There’s outside seating too. I’d go here for an appetizer and to sit at the bar or outside but not for a meal. It was all a little too salty for my taste. Literally the chicken dish that night was unbearable. No complaints on the appetizers and drinks.
Chicken Pate and the choice of bread... Lovely The half chicken was a gamble, but I won big time. The burnt lemon was a lovely touch, I'm usually hesitant of lemon chicken, but the char mellowed it out. Nice. The chicken was great, juicy, skin on, brilliant. I'm going to end this by saying. I HATE carrots. Except these. The inclusion in this dish was a great surprise and a welcome one. I am well happy
We had stopped by for a quick bite prior to dinner! The bread was the highlight of our choices- it was phenomenal. Warm, fluffy, and with a sweet & spicy glaze on top. The sausage dish was also quite good! I wish they had more choices for small bits, but overall the menu was decent. The staff were great!
I give it a 4/5, wife gives it 5/5. Waitress was very helpful and knowledgeable about the revolving farm to table menu. She helped guide us on choices - from small bites to shareables to main dishes. Started with goat cheese/strawberry burrata. Veggie pâté was very good, but felt the Caesar dressing was a bit salty. Wife loved her steak with locally sourced ramps. Maybe a bit overpriced. Overall, 4.5 and would recommend.
Had dinner there on a Thursday with my wife. Overall a nice experience. Our server was great and clearly knew the menu and food well. My wife had the duck confit which was an inventive and well done dish. I had the squash which was great. The only downer was the cheese course. Portions of cheese were small and it is strange to see mustard on a cheese plate.
The meals we had were decent just not really filling.Bartender quite pleasant. Wish the portions were larger. We got the Royal Red Shrimp and Grits and the Omelette. The best part of the shrimp dish was the smoked bacon pieces and shrimp.
Had a late lunch here after a 2 hour walking tour. Food was excellent especially the shrimp and grits. It’s not what I’d normally expect - ie rich creamy sauce mixed in with the grits. This was more light refreshing tomato based - different but definitely good!
We were excited to try this place because the menu looked more interesting than Posana next door. The ambiance is so so. Service was great. Their sweet potato was literally less than half a sweet potato, plain baked, with an egg and some popcorn on top. For $18. Sausage was so so, hard to digest. The only dish we liked was the bison short ribs, but at $29 it was a tiny portion, which became tinier when we ordered a second one. Also the only thing that tasted good on that plate was the actual meat.
TLDR: The culinary offerings failed to match the elevated expectations set by their pricing, resulting in a mediocre experience. The service team was friendly and knowledgeable, guiding us through the menu and recommending dishes suited to our preferences. We sampled various items from the menu's Snacks and Passing Time sections. While some dishes were a hit, others could have done better in terms of quality. The Goat Cheese burrata lacked sufficient squash, a component the table particularly enjoyed. The Smoked Pork Meatballs were skillfully prepared and possessed decent flavor. However, the rabbit and country ham dip fell short—despite its bold taste, it was excessively greasy and lacked an element to balance it out. As for the main courses, they didn't stand out. My pork loin was cooked well but lacked the expected sophistication. Likewise, my companion found the half-chicken lacking in distinctiveness.
This was our first time at Rhubarb and we went for my wife's birthday. We had one amazing dish and three mediocre dishes. The goat cheese Burrata with crispy shallots and apples. Amazing dish. One of the best things I've eaten in Asheville and I've lived here for many years. The other dishes were disappointing. The braised carrots and turnips were hard, undercooked. Maybe that's the way the chef intended them to be, but I did not like them. They didn't charge us for that dish. The pork belly was dry, and more like a big piece of roast. It just didn't take like pork belly and needed a sauce or braise to pull the dish together. The grits with cabbage and apples was ok but the ratio seemed off. It was more like just eating a bowl of cabbage and apples, which we're good, but nothing to go back for. The bread basket was good. The Rhu downstairs has the best bread in town. We weren't impressed enough to stay for the next course and chose to head out. The space was beautiful. The service was excellent. Bottom line: I'd happily go to sit at the bar for a drink and a plate of that Burrata but would otherwise choose somewhere else such as Curate or Cucina 24 for an upscale farm to table meal.
The restaurant was COVID compliant with everyone wearing a mask including staff. Waiter was attentive. The meal was good but not the best we ever had. The goat cheese burrata was tasty and so was the chicken dish and the duck confit could have had more duck. The deconstructed s’more were a total miss. Overall ok.
Wanted to give it 2 and a half stars but I couldn’t so just gave it 2…. Had a reservation for 6:45 didn’t get seated till 7:10. Cocktails were good kinda small compared to other places drinks tho. Bartender was cool and friendly. On to the food had the 5 course meal for valentines days. Which started with 2 options of oysters. The thyme and sage smoked oysters were good the smoked mushrooms oyster's were not. 2nd course were the poached prawns and vegetable crude. Prawns were decent nothing I haven’t tried before vegetable crude was really not good to me. 3rd course was the foie grass which was the highlight of the meal was really tasty. The main course were palmetto poussin and the beef roulade. The palmetto was really bland chicken would not offer it to anyone on the other hand the beef roulade was pretty good not the best but all in all was good. There’s plenty of better options for high end dining options In Asheville in my opinion
What a disappointing way to spend birthday dinner. Made reservations to go here to celebrate my partners birthday while visiting Asheville. Honestly, it was over priced and underwhelming food with poor ambiance. I will start by saying that our server, Alyssa, was awesome. It would be 0 stars without her. As someone with a background as a chef and in the in industry, her knowledge about the menu, attentiveness throughout the meal, and ability to suggest and upsell was impressive and refreshing. She’s the only positive thing about the entire experience. While the menu looks good on paper, and I commend their commitment to local farms and fresh and sustainable ingredients, they didn’t deliver on any of the items we ordered. The pimento hush puppies may have been the best value on the menu, but perhaps one of the worst tasting ones. Not sure if we got a bad batch, but there was no pimento flavor present. The hush puppies were over cooked and lacked any flavor. The only saving Grace was the comeback sauce, perhaps the most flavor of anything we ate all night. The waitress insisted, almost bullying us, that for two people, we needed three appetizers and the largest entree. The goat cheese burrata was the best overall flavored dish, but lacked quality. Honestly, hard to mess up a burrata dish but they managed to. The “local tomatoes” listed was actually just one, singular tomato slice. Not sure where the chili vinegar was and the pesto was more separated oil than anything. The worst part was however the toast. The toast was actually just soft bread. When you tried to put the burrata on it, it fell apart and was quite messy. I was most excited for the pecan cornbread. It was dry and over cooked. You can see where it was charred on the sides. Somehow a $16 dish with pecans, hot honey, charred onions, and fromage blanc had less flavor than a $0.50 box of jiffy mix. Also, $16 for the equivalent of 2-3 pieces of cornbread is ridiculous for a place like this in Asheville. At $50, I assumed the pork loin would be spectacular. The only spectacular thing were the few little pieces of peach salsa. (Rivaling the comeback sauce for the best part of the meal.) The meat itself was a bit tough and very fatty. Not sure what they dry rubbed it with, but it left no distinct flavor on the palate. Romano beans were fine but the chicharrones were a little too scaly. I thought at least the red rice would tide me over until I could get some decent food but unfortunately, it was undercooked. Should be chewy on the outside, not completely chewy throughout. They also left a bay leaf in the rice, a very unpleasant thing to bite into, Perhaps the inside is nice but I would not recommend sitting on the patio. I understand that they can’t control the city, but it was extremely loud and rowdy. Lots of people yelling from cars and such. Not quite the intimate birthday dinner we had imagined. I don’t usually feel the need to write this much negative commentary about a place, especially in a post Covid era, but I am just so disheartened at our experience. If I had to sum up the experience, I would say unremarkable, overpriced, and disappointing. Even the root beer was flat and had a weak flavor. (The bottle of wine we ordered was decent.) I guess dropping the amount we did, we expected something delicious and we didn’t get that. They definitely over sell and under deliver. One dish being off I can accept, ordering four different items and all of them missing is simply unacceptable. **Just being salty about this: When I made the reservation it asked about special occasions and I put that it was my partners birthday. They even checked our IDs before we ordered wine. 0 mention of this. Not sure why they asked about special occasions if they weren’t even going to get the waitress to say, “So happy you’ve chosen to dine with us on your special day.” Then again… I guess I shouldn’t expect much from a place that can’t properly make toast. Obviously, we won’t be returning.
