Guys guys guys!!! One of the best Creole restaurants I have found in the midwest. That is similar to the style of cooking of New Orleans. We were having a early lunch date before picking up my parents from the airport. The service, the atmosphere,and the food isspot on and banging. Shrimp and grits was spot on with a cornbread muffin. They even have a speakeasy that's connected to it with live jazz Tuesdays and thursdays.

My boyfriend made reservations here to celebrate my birthday. We had never been before and it was AMAZING! Our server was Bonnie, she was friendly and efficient. She made recommendations and was just delightful. Food and drinks were delicious. Portions are generous. I will definitely go back.

We visited Fixins Soul Kitchen Detroit while in the city over the Thanksgiving holiday, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. From the moment we sat down, the service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming—exactly the kind of hospitality you hope for with soul food. The fried chicken and waffles were the standout for me. The chicken was perfectly seasoned with a crisp, golden crust and juicy meat inside, paired beautifully with fluffy waffles that struck the right balance between sweet and savory. Absolute comfort food perfection. The fried deviled eggs were rich and indulgent, with a creamy filling and a crispy exterior that added great texture. The fried catfish bites were light, flaky, and well-seasoned—no heaviness, just clean, soulful flavor. The shrimp and grits were smooth and comforting, with tender shrimp and deeply flavored grits that felt both hearty and refined. The sides were just as impressive. The collard greens were slow-cooked, savory, and full of depth, while the black-eyed peas were tender, earthy, and perfectly seasoned—classic soul food done right. One final note: the hot sauce is incredible and absolutely worth buying to take home. It packs flavor, not just heat. Everything about this visit—from the food to the service—was outstanding. We’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in Detroit. Highly recommend Fixins Soul Kitchen if you’re looking for authentic, elevated soul food done with care and pride.

Just wow, I did not expect the food could be so delish in Detroit! Amazing place with amazing dishes; service was prompt. The oxtail was really tender and flavorful and the collard greens were cooked to perfection. My husband’s Bloody Mary drink was like a work of art. Would definitely come back next time we are in Detroit! Long wait for a table when we came around 3pm on a Saturday; but we sat at the bar which was first come first serve.

We had an after work team dinner at Fixin’s and it was a resplendent, Engineered to AMAZE experience! While the vibe is cool, the service and the food were over the top. Our server took time to explain the foods, sides, etc. We were interested in sampling sides so everything was arranged so we could pass them around almost family style. I went with fried chicken and the pieces were HUGE! The seasoning and crisp on the chicken was perfect, and the chicken was nice and moist. The collard greens were amazing as well, but we also tried nearly all the others. Oh and you can’t go wrong with the fried deviled eggs! The only disappointment? Didn’t save room for dessert!

Fixins in Detroit absolutely gets it right from start to finish. The moment you walk in, you can feel the vibe — the decor is warm and inviting, the music and atmosphere are on point, and the energy just feels good. It’s the kind of place that’s clearly well thought out in every detail. Now let’s talk about the food — phenomenal! I had the shrimp and grits, and it was pure comfort on a plate: perfectly seasoned, rich, and absolutely delicious. I paired it with a spiked Arnold Palmer, which hit all the right notes. Every bite (and sip!) reminded me why I love great soul food done right. A special shoutout to Josh, our server, who was the bomb! He was friendly, knowledgeable, and patient as we browsed the menu — and his recommendations were spot on. With so many tempting options, having someone that helpful made all the difference. Fixins is what I expect from a top-tier, well-put-together soul food establishment. I’ll definitely be back — and next time, I’m bringing friends!

What an absolute treasure this place is! From the decor to the staff to the food, Fixins is a must visit. I recommend making a reservation if you have more than 2. A was alone and sat at the bar. The food was so good I was mentally making up people from my childhood to reminisce about. I was so captivated by my surroundings that I forgot to take a lot of pictures. The tea came out in a large mason jar. The chicken and waffles was perfect! The chicken had a crunch that lasted after I doused everything with syrup. It was seasoned perfectly. The red beans and rice had a little kick to it. The banana pudding was perfect.

Definitely make reservations. Went on a Tuesday and still waiting nearly an hour for a table. Good atmosphere, noisy but not distracting. Service was ok... Had to wait and get other server's attention for assistance. Food presentation wasn't consistent. Fried green tomatoes appetizer tasted better than entree. Fish was cooked well but sides were basic and candied yams were loaded with a layer of oil on top. Overall experience could have been better.

I got invited to eat some soul food ( which I have never had before ) When you walk in the restaurant is so clean and nice. The vibe is relaxing and quiet. All the servers was very friendly and polite. The waitress helped me pick my drink and I was impressed with how it looked and taste. I ordered the fried devil eggs and I'm gonna tell you, those were so good I highly recommend them for you to try. I ordered the oxtail meal and it came with 2 sides but I ordered 3 sides because I couldn't make a decision on just 2. The Oxtail was on a bed of rice with gravy and that was sooo good 👍 My sides was Mac and cheese ( was good ), collard greens ( amazing 👏), yams ( fantastic ), charred ocra ( which I didn't like. It tasted burnt ). I ordered dessert to go of course which was peach cobbler and that was Ok. I would go back to try more of the menu. I gave a 4 because of the ocra and cobbler

I was just here this past Sunday and Fixins was delicious! The atmosphere and black representation in the restaurant was very nice, and I wish I had time to walk around and really see it all inside. I was pleased with the service and it wasn’t super busy despite there being a Detroit Lions game occurring at the same time. I ordered the red beans&rice, macaroni and cheese and the chicken tenders and a cornbread muffin. My food was good and the service was actually pretty quick. The only thing I will say is perhaps a little less breading on the chicken and everything kind of had a slight ‘kick’ to it but it wasn’t bad nor did it turn me away from wanting to finish my food. That cornbread muffin was one of the best I’ve had and my friend let me try some of her deviled eggs and that was actually my first time having a deviled egg and it was fried. I loved it! Never take those off the menu! Props to whoever made the kool-aid because that was off the chain, it was well balanced and not too sweet. Also I want to mention that the prices are fair. Kara was our waitress and she did a lovely job serving our small table. I will definitely be back to Fixins and I would definitely recommend it to others!

I really enjoyed my visit! The atmosphere was lovely—visuals of Black singers of the 70s and 80s filled the space and set such a good vibe. The soul food portions were generous and everything was very tasty. I’ll admit, the food definitely made me a little sleepy afterwards, but that’s how you know it was real soul food! Overall, a great experience with good music, good energy, and delicious food. Would definitely return.

Fixing Soul Food captures real Detroit flavor — soulful décor filled with iconic Black film posters and a warm, nostalgic vibe. The biscuits and strawberry butter alone are worth the visit — pure heaven! The oxtails were tender, the okra with bacon a masterpiece, and the fried chicken crisp and juicy. The fried green tomatoes looked great but were a little too thickly breaded for my taste. The mac and cheese had nice presentation but fell flat on flavor. Thankfully, the peach cobbler ended the meal on a high note — warm, sweet, and absolutely delicious. Our server, Dior, was polite, attentive, and knowledgeable — her service made the night even better. The only downside was the loud music and long tables that made conversation difficult, but overall, this place serves up soul and flavor with style. A solid 4-star experience — Detroit comfort food done right! 🍑✨

Went with friends to celebrate a birthday and had a good overall experience. The sides were really good, especially the yams and mac and cheese. The fried green tomatoes with the sauce were delicious. The chicken itself was mid, and the gravy needed a bit more love and flavor. The lavender lemon drop was definitely a highlight. The red velvet cake was not it, though. 👎🏾 Service by Chyna was great, even while they were busy, which we really appreciated. The music was a bit loud, but overall it was a nice spot for a celebration.

The seafood gumbo was good, tasted the oxtails & they were not as tender as I would have expected but the flavor was good. Atmosphere was very loud & entrance congested. No barbecue on the menu which is what should always be served at a soul food restaurant and prices were very high considering the quality of food, for example, $12 for a scoop of peach cobbler & over a $100 bill for two people that did not include alcoholic beverages.

This was my first visit to Fixins! I was excited to go. My husband and I left a 5 star steak house just because my taste buds was screaming soul food and I saw so many good reviews. We paid $20 for parking. We ordered 2 appetizers, the fried green tomatoes and fried deviled eggs. He gave the tomatoes an 8/10 and I gave the eggs a 6/10. This was my first time trying fried deviled eggs and I thought the eggs would have been more flavorful being fried, not at all. We ordered 4 meals. The oxtails, fried chicken, catfish and chicken tender and fries meal for my daughter. Our sides were greens, macaroni and yams. The oxtails were a 7/10 they came out looking dry, could have had more gravy and they sat over a bed of minute rice which was a take away for me. The yams didn’t look too good but they taste ok. Cornbread muffins were very dry, hard and tasteless 2/10. Catfish was not catfish at all 0/10. I have no idea what they used but it didn't look nor did it taste like catfish. I left it right on the table. The waitress asked if I was packing it to go I responded no it was horrible and she didn’t offer a replacement or anything. The Macaroni was just ok 6/10 if that. The greens were a 5/10. The fried chicken was a disappointment as well. We ordered 2 breast and a wing. The breast was huge and lacked seasoning. The best meal that came to the table was my daughter’s chicken tender and fries meal 10/10. I would say that maybe we came on a bad day but the fish I was served just blew me away. It was flat and taste nothing at all like catfish. When I think soulful the cornbread and chicken should both be 10/10 at least. The kool aid was a 10/10.

Not a good experience at this restaurant. Went with a group of six on a Sunday which was extremely busy. I gave them Grace for the slow service because the music was good and I enjoyed chatting and people watching while waiting for my food. We waited over an hour and they literally brought the food out one person at a time with about a 5-7 minute wait between bringing the next persons order out. After about 20 additional minutes of waiting they said I’d have an extra 5 minute wait to get my chicken. I had them bring out my sides, which they did pretty quickly. After another 5 minute wait I canceled my order and just ate off my husband’s plate. The waffles were good but toward the end of my husband’s meal he realized he had been eating Bloody chicken. We let the waitress know and she said she’d get her boss who never came out. She then came out and told us her boss said it was brine even though the boss never came to see it. They were not accommodating and even charged us more after asking to be accommodated for their disgusting error by removing the price of the Bloody piece of chicken from our bill. I would not recommend eating here but if you do, check your chicken before you bite into it and don’t expect to be accommodated for their mistakes. We left there dissatisfied and disappointed. The waitress was nice but ready to go home and instead of holding her up we paid our bill, tipped her and kept it pushing.
