Opinions de Oceanview Cafe Brooklyn
i had never been to brighton beach, this was my first stop. i had the borscht which was incredible, and the pierogies. i was in awe with how much care they put into their food, clearly all home made with incredible ingredients. i wish i could try everything off the menu! can't wait to come again.
This is a great place to come for authentic Russian food. We enjoyed every dish we ordered. The flavors and the execution were spot on. The service was attentive and very professional.
I love it! Great food, very friendly staff. Thank you guys for your hospitality and great service!
This is my favorite restaurant, period. I didn't grow up in Brooklyn, but Ocean View Cafe feels like a place I have been going to since I was a kid. It fills me with wonderful memories of a few homey eateries I grew up with and makes me excited to come here for years to come and make more memories with friends and family. The Ukrainian Borsht makes my soul sing, I'm crazy for the salmon with white sauce (everything on the menu is good, in case you were wondering) and they always have the tastiest wines. The staff is very nice as well. One summer day a crazy rainstorm caught us by surprise and the wait staff came sprinting outside at the first rain drop with umbrellas to shepherd us inside, we never got wet even though the rain was coming down in buckets. That kind of care for customers is special.
Everything we ordered was so delicious and well-presented that we couldn't stop wowing! It's a rare place that serves Vareniki with meat. They were unbeatable! Solyanka soup was the best! Chicken kebabs were so tender and delicious! All the portions were very generous too. It was one of the best meals we ever had.
Do not be afraid of the modest atmosphere of the cafe, the quality of the dishes will definitely not disappoint you! A very cozy cafe, with delicious dishes and reasonable prices, the waiters are very polite. We were very pleased with our visit to this restaurant, and we will definitely come back here again.
very good soup solyanka, extremely good vareniki. Portion size for vareniki is full meal size despite classification as appetizer. Dont eat bread if you want the vareniki with something else
Hands down the best food on the whole block! We came from Canada and we loved every dish we tried ! The service is outstanding 👏 good job guys keep it up will definitely come back
Born in Brooklyn, I grew up with a Polish grandmother and mother. Decades later I brought my now-husband here while visiting NYC to experience the type of food I grew up with, and months later I still think about it while salivating. Solid, unpretentious food. Borscht and pierogis like I was weened on. This place is for real. Good prices, friendly staff.
I like this cafe. Very good service and food.
Walked in with a group and was immediately sat at a lovely corner table, the warm atmosphere and friendly waiter were only hints of what was to come. Tender vareniki, plump cabbage roll, exciting pickled veg plate, hefty kielbasa, and a crisp yet juicy shitnzel, ending with their triumphant blintzes. Perfect dinner!
I loved every moment of my visit to the Ocean View Cafe. I just got a cup of borscht, but I can’t wait to come back for a full meal. The borscht was so delicious. The service was great and I enjoyed the ambiance + music as well. Perfect place for a meal after a day at the beach.
Staff was very kind and accommodating to my family for our first time there. Food was fantastic and looking forward to coming back asap!
If you're craving authentic Russian cuisine in Brooklyn, Oceanview Cafe is the place to go. I had lunch/dinner there with my dad today and had a delightful experience. We started with a bowl of soup with pelmeni to share, which was comforting and rich in flavor. For the main course, my dad enjoyed the pork shish kebab with mashed potatoes, while I had the chicken shish kebab with French fries. Both dishes were exceptionally tasty. Eating the food at Oceanview Cafe will transport you down memory lane back to fond childhood memories of your Russian grandmother's cooking in the former Soviet Union. I highly recommend this place! It's a taste of home you won’t regret!
I always been passing by, finally had dinner yesterday ! It was incredible! People are so tired of middle eastern food in the area, so ocean view cafe is the best option to go! Delicious food- extremely friendly service, and affordable prices! If you want to try real Ukrainian food this is place to go!
Best Russians fusion food! Homemade, and I mean really home made ♥️ They support Ukrain too! Very diverse clientele, and the menu is endless!!!! Every time we’re there we make sure to order for taking out as well!
Huge servings, food is great. Prices are very reasonable. Service was good. They did add some 10% service fee and wanted tips on top of that, but it is easy to notice and fix. Still one of my favorite places in Brighton.
Due to my wife’s Russian/Ukrainian heritage we ended up at the Ocean View Cafe It’s a typical ethnic Restaurant which is frequented by local Russians which also explains their very good Russian/Ukrainian cuisine Very friendly service and nice atmosphere. A place I would very much visit again when in Brooklyn.
The food was good, great service, nice ambiance inside and outside. Big portions- we ordered soup and entry and had to take some home. Solyanka, okroshka, chicken stroganoff, vareniki with meat, sour cream cake, tea - served with jam and lemon (on the side) - everything was fresh and delicious! Service was top notch too!
One of those meals that makes you feel happy and appreciate being alive. I ordered the borscht and beef stroganoff with a pear soda. Warned my soul on a chilly April day. Delicious. Wish I could finish the generous portion.
We were in this cafe yesterday and immensely enjoyed quietness and amazing ambiance of a typical Brighton Beach restaurant. It was great until a family with 2 monkeys came to eat. We though that endangered species are not allowed in public but the manager of this place explained they are just some arrogant and undisciplined kids. Real kids!!! What a surprise!!!! Luckily they left very soon (otherwise this place would be simply demolished by them) Great place, great food! Highly recommend!
I would give them 10 stars if i could. They are wonderful, and Brooklyn's best kept secret. My friend and i take the Q train religiously, every week, to go walk along the board walk for a couple of hours, then go have lunch here. Since I work with the public, long hours, by the time I get here I'm exhausted! One smell of the sea air, and a wonderful lunch of traditional Russian fare (mixed with some American favorites) and I'm good to go! They are also fantastic about not rushing us, either. We languish for a couple of hours, practicing our tarot cards, and they leave us alone. I love the home made split pea and ham soup, followed by the chicken kebab and a glass of red wine. This is "me" time that leaves me wonderfully relaxed and ready for the week ahead. It is reasonably priced Russian fare at its very finest!
I love this place. My favorite to bring guests here and come myself! The food is authentic Russian/Ukrainian. I’m Russian and my wife Ukrainian and we both enjoy the good home cooking style food. The waiters are knowledgeable and polite. The prices are reasonable. The place could use an update on the appearance but the food makes up for it! Thanks ocean view cafe! See you next time!
Incredible food! I’m not Russian and recently moved to Brooklyn. I stumbled upon this place while trying to find good pierogis. It’s INCREDIBLE! So delicious, so fun. Servers are kind and efficient. Food is consistently good. Their glassware is so nice, and it’s all just a short walk from the beach. Get a shot of vodka with your meal, cause...why not!
The food is so good here. I especially loved the beef skewers with French fries. The French fries were outstanding—like fresh McDonald's fries, but homemade. I also enjoyed the eggplant salad; it seems to be a Russian staple, so I always eat it when I'm in this part of town, and this place has the best one I've had. Really great food, friendly and professional service. Oh... least I forget the desserts. The Tiramisu was velvety and delicious.
If you are planning to visit Brighton beach and try some Soviet food, you definitely need to go to this place, don’t go anywhere else, and you will definitely want to come back again! Really nice authentic soviet atmosphere and very cool authentic soviet crowd! Absolutely love this place, always go there!
Highly recommend by friends with Russian and Ukrainian connections. The food were wonderful. From the shirmp cocktails to broscht. Father in law said the food reminds him of his Ukrainian grandmother's cooking. Service is a bit slow, but no one seems to mind it, as it is frequent by regulars. A real neighborhood gem.
A nice typical Russian/Ukrainian place, cool atmosphere and good food. Don’t take the shush lol, it is mediocre. Home made pelmeni and vareniki are among the best I tried. If you take wine better take by bottle 😂, much cheaper. They played good old rock video from the 90s. I recommend a visit.
Five of us had dinner here. It is a tight space for groups and many people were turned away because there wasn’t any seating. We all got several different items and all were delicious! The stuffed cabbage was awesome and the pickled watermelon was different but good. I liked the Ukrainian borscht better than the green. The potato vareniki were not as good as the meat version but still tasty. Portions are a good size and we all left full. Will be returning.
great location, near the metro and the beach. two guys waiters were friendly and polite. we ordered ukrainian borscht and greek salad. the food was delicious. the compote was also delicious and fresh. the prices are a bit expensive. i recommend visiting
Great food, nice and cozy environment, friendly staff. Big Thanks!
Jared Leto & Nicholas Cage allegedly made my borscht and varenyky (photo) 9.5/10 I expect it from Leto due to his depth and breadth of versatility but Cage plays the same person in every movie. One trick pony. “I’m going to steal the Declaration of Independence” ok, nerd. A wild card though in this lesser known Scorsese flick called Bringing out the Dead, 1999. Phenomenal cinematography. Genuinely good portrayal of being haunted by the ghosts of the patients that either pass before you arrive or while in transit to the hospital as a city medic. There’s a scene sometimes shown at narcan courses where the costar gathers together a crowd at a club and makes them pray to believe that it’s Jesus and not the noloxone reviving the victim. That’s real too. Theres so much religiosity around traumatic death especially. Logic goes out the window in the face of uncertainty and unshakable fear
The food is great the prices are great but for some reason after I eat their my stomach hurts...
The staff we’re friendly and quick. The food was delicious. Will come again.
This modest spot succeeds through genuine hospitality. Employees were consistently cordial. They've achieved both class and comfort in their design. Their dishes benefit from fresh items. The price is backed by real quality.
Every bite here was better than the last one. It's a cozy little spot with staff who are reasonably pleasant. The staff create a warm atmosphere. These meals display evident excellence. You should schedule a visit to this place now.
The food and atmosphere were nice, but the American pop music really ruined the vibe. Traditional Slavic music would’ve matched the theme much better and created a more authentic experience
The place is very cute, has indoor and outdoor tables. Food is very delicious. Due to hot summer weather we came to have okroshka and so far it is the best okroshka from many other Russian style food places. The service is extremely fast and nice. They also have their own cat who lives inside the restaurant, he walks around tables, rubs around. I highly recommend this place for authentic Ukrainian/russian food
Great food, kind servers! We got the stuffed cabbage and pelmeni with mushroom sauce. I would recommend both dishes but they have a large menu with many choices.
Today is Valentine's Day. We strolled from Coney Island Beach watching the sunset to here. Ocean View Cafe is a really cozy eatery. The portions are generous; the two of us, adults, ordered dumplings, vegetable rolls, and borscht soup, and our stomachs were filled to the brim, as well as our hearts. The service wasn't top-notch, but it's a family restaurant, so it felt just right. The dining vibe was super chill and relaxed. We've never tried Ukrainian cuisine before, so this was our first time, and we fell in love with it because of Ocean View Cafe. Definitely want to come back for more. Ps. Compot tea definitely is today’s super star.
We ran here from DTBK and had a bunch of dishes. The pelmeni with mushroom sauce is soooo good. We also had borscht, golubtsi, potato salad, farmers cheese blintze
The best sour cherry vareniki outside my mom’s house. Beautiful vegetable borscht, fresh salads, chicken cutlet, Russian fries (“home fries”), STUFFED CABBAGE, potato salad (“olivea”), and probably everything else. This is someone’s Ukrainian mom in the back, cooking and holding up standards. Five stars all around. A must if in Brighton Beach.
What a treat. We went to Brighton Beach to go to Tatiana's but they had closed the kitchen just as we walked through the door so here we are, Tuesday night at 8:30 pm and we decided to find sheeting close by. Of course you have to be prepared to eat some very rich foods when you're in little Russia. We walked back to Brighton Beach Ave and made our way to BB 3rd Street and happened into Oceanview Cafe. This is not a fancy place but the food and the value in amazing. Located deep in the heart of Brooklyn's Russian community in Brighton beach, it's a simple place with food tasting home cooking and lots of Russian culture all around. We were going to Tatiana's but they closed early tonight so we drove down Brighton Beach avenue and happened into this little spot. The beef stroganoff was very yummy and not overly rich. It was the perfect warming meal for a cold winter night. It seems like every culture has a form of dumplings. These were filled with lamb meat which tasted delicious. Lamb is usually gamey but this wasn't at all. The only bummer is the whole equation was the French fries. I probably should have ordered the mash potatoes. They seemed to be the store brought frozen kind you get in any supermarket. Not very tasty. But on the whole this was a great experience and the price tag was VERY affordable. If you're in Brighton Beach, check out this little piece of Russian heaven.
Had a great dinner here with family friends. Smoked mackerel and potatoes and a bunch of other pretty classic Russian dishes, including stuffed cabbage, beef stroganoff, remin...(sp)—Russian equivalent to boiled perogis stuffed with meet and cheese, some blintzes and a couple of types of cake for dessert. Also enjoyed drinking tea from Russian-style glasses with ornate metal holders and cherries added. Great experience.
Brighton Beach There’s something special about bringing your child to a place that carries history on every plate. Today I took my son to a traditional Eastern European café on Brighton Beach — a true corner of the former Soviet Union right here in Brooklyn. Walking under the elevated train tracks, hearing Russian spoken on every corner, seeing Cyrillic signs in the windows — it feels like stepping into another world. And the food? Pure nostalgia. We ordered classic dishes prepared the old way — the way they’ve been made for generations. Golden blintzes with sweet jam and sour cream, soft and perfectly pan-seared. A hearty omelet loaded with sausage, tomatoes, and mushrooms — simple, filling, honest food. Fresh bread in a basket, hot tea served in a traditional glass with a metal podstakannik holder — a detail that instantly brings back memories of train rides across Eastern Europe. Nothing here is trendy. Nothing is over-styled. It’s authentic. It’s generous. It’s rooted in tradition. What makes Brighton Beach special is its multicultural blend — Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian, Uzbek, Jewish, Armenian influences — all living side by side, expressed through food that carries stories of migration, resilience, and identity. Introducing my son to these flavors wasn’t just about breakfast. It was about heritage. It was about showing him where part of our culture comes from. It was about keeping traditions alive. The café may not be Michelin-starred. But it serves something just as powerful — memory, warmth, and authenticity. Brighton Beach never disappoints.
Ocean View Cafe is a fantastic spot. I’m giving it 5 stars because I really enjoyed my time there. The service was great (4 stars) and the atmosphere was beautiful (4 stars). The food was a bit more average (3 stars), but it didn’t take away from a really pleasant visit. Highly recommended for a nice morning out!
Took the family there for lunch after a walk on the Brighton Beach boardwalk. It did not disappoint! Excellent stuffed cabbage and soups. Very attentive service.
That was an excellent lunch. Now, I don’t know much about Eastern European food. But that was absolutely delicious. The sea bass and the chicken stroganoff were a delight. We had vareniki, borscht, and stuffed cabbage as apps, all of which were delicious too. And for dessert we had some blintzes with cheese and jelly that were the perfect send off. Not a bad price either, and the service was very quick and to the point (not a lot of small talk but I wouldn’t have expected it either). 100% would recommend
This place knows what diners want and delivers it all. They create food that impresses twice. We were acknowledged immediately by friendly staff. A good neighborhood place with flavorful options. The local scene needed this restaurant.
My buddy had a craving for borscht while we were on the east coast and with Brighton Beach being little Odessa, thats where we went. I randomly chose this place and when I walked in and saw pictures from the movie Lord of War on the wall (it was filmed here)... I fangirled out! Anyways, the food... Probably the best Russian and Ukrainian food I've had in the States. The pelmeni was superb, the ground chicken cutlet and mashed potatoes were delicious and filling, and for dessert? A couple of shots of Russian Standard and a Ukrainian beer. I also enjoyed the atmosphere. Customers came in, ordered their meals in Russian or Ukrainian, and went about their afternoon. Everyone from mom's with their little kids in tow to babushkas gossiping and enjoying lunch. This was a meal fit for a Lord of War, no doubt.
I found this great place on Yelp a few days ago. They understand appropriate serving sizes. I appreciate what they offer here. The employees balance professionalism with warmth. We'll visit again without fail.
We came with a big company and ordered a lot of different food. The best dumplings were with meat (pelmeni) and mushrooms on top. Also, we liked vareniki with sour cherry. Fried potatoes with mushrooms, dill, and garlic were excellent 👌 Lamb and pork kebabs were good marinated and juicy. Salad with beef tongue was good as well. In addition, I was impressed with costumes service. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. We will definitely come again 🫶
Borscht was super comforting especialy after adding the sour cream. As someone that hates tomato this was an exception, Pelmeni w mushroom sauce, was quite heavy for an appetizier but super creamyy and meat inside the dumpling was super generous and thick. I wish its more juicy.. but the mushroom sauce saved it Chicken stroganof, yellow rice was alr good. Flavour profile is very similar to the mushroom sauce for the pelmeni just this one is w/ chicken All the flavours were leaning to creamy and sweet
Comfortable, clean, friendly staff. We had the Ukrainian borscht and cold borsch, both were delicious. The Ukrainian borscht was hot and perfectly spiced. We had the smoked mackerel with potatoes. The potatoes were amazing with good garlic flavor and went well with the fish. The fish came with red onions which tasted amazing eaten together, the onions and fish flavors blended nicely. We then had the stuffed cabbage. This was the best stuffed cabbage I ever ate. I love stuffed cabbage and have eaten it many times. I have had the Jewish style, comes with raisins and has a sweet and sour taste. It is always good but it couldn’t compare to this heavenly dish of Ukrainian stuffed cabbage. Light spicing, impeccable sauce and the meat tastes like veal. It was so smooth - just fabulous. I can’t wait to go back to try many more items on the menu. This place rocks - go eat here!
... Good service in this restaurant. I love ordering lamb kebab here. And some mashed potatoes or French fries to go with the lamb kebab. It’s also good to take beef goulash. There are also delicious dumplings and I ordered delicious dumplings with cherries. The waiters are always polite and I always leave them a tip because I like the way they serve here. The only minus is when someone sitting next to them drinks vodka. I can’t stand the smell of vodka, that’s the only minus but I try to choose a place where it’s in the corner and no one is sitting next to them, they also don’t accept American Express credit cards and they also have dumplings that you can buy and cook at home тут снимали фильм Оружейный барон This is where the movie The Lord of War was filmed. Updated 05\24/2024 everything remained delicious and excellent. But I don’t recommend buying ready-made pilmeni. since they are boiled soft, dumplings with meat are even less tasty...
went to this place as my first authentic Russian experience in Brighton Beach after having lived here so many years and didn't realize how much I was missing out. had the potato and mushroom verenikis and borscht, was delicious and very comforting. tried. also. the schnitzel which was very good and I really weird crepe thing called the frigates I think anyway would highly recommend and also had the pair soda which tastes like guarana from Brazil
My friend and I actually got pretty good service at this place, we came here for an early dinner. I loved the Borscht, stuffed cabbage, and meat vareniki. She thought her seafood pasta was really good. Blintzes with farmer cheese was not our thing. Would definitely come back again next time I'm in the Brighton Beach area
One of my coworkers studied abroad in Russia for a year for a master's program and has since fallen in love with Russian food. He convinced me to try out Oceanview Cafe for its authentic fare. I'm not typically a fan of ethnic cuisine that's outside the realm of Italian or Mexican, but this food (at least when I went for dinner) was really good! The service from the waitress was prompt. I was hungry when I went so I appreciated the quick service. I couldn't decide what to get on the menu since I'm not familiar with Russian food. The waitress was very helpful and pointed out her favorites, which I ordered: a blini filled with meat, the borscht, and sauerkraut. I felt the portion sizes were very generous, and the waitress also brought out the food quickly; she stopped by to ask how I was doing without being annoying and intrusive about it. Prices were also really reasonable. I left paying less than I thought I would.
Pretty tasty food but a little sweet.
Very tight Russian and Ukrainian restaurant with nicely marinated shish kebabs
It’s called Ukrainian restaurant, but no one is actually speaking Ukrainian. Not a problem, just an observation. Portions are big, nothing to add here. Food is not bad, service is a bit slow, but nice and pleasant overall. If you’d like to try out some Ukrainian/Eastern European cuisine - nice place to visit and do it, if you are in the area. You can also order take away or order food to cook at home (vareniki, pelmeni) Overall, I can recommend if you live nearby or in the neighborhood.
The place doesn’t look like much, but the food is absolutely delicious! Both pelmeni and vareniki looked handmade and had great flavor. Prices were reasonable. The only reason I knocked one star down was particularly slow service. Place wasn’t necessarily busy and there were two servers so there was honestly no reason they wouldn’t check on me or offer drink refill and such. That said food made the wait worth it
We came here based on a recommendation as a Ukrainian café. However, in reality, the place feels quite different. The owners are not Ukrainian, and the atmosphere does not reflect Ukrainian culture. Aside from some menu items, there is nothing particularly Ukrainian about this place.
happy to visit this place because it reminded me of my grandma’s cooking. most of the food is fantastic and fresh, yet it comes super fast. waiter was nice and attentive. drinks were good. patio is nicely set up although loud from the train. bathroom is ok. busy spot but still room on the weekend. love that the patio is dog friendly. everything was going perfect until we left - my dog has an eye disease (pannus) so she has to wear sunglasses. the chef was smoking outside and started harassing us when he noticed my dog saying “we are blinding her and hurting the dog”. found this really annoying because he would not leave us alone. and again, my dog wears the sunglasses because she literally has an eye disease so i’m prolonging her vision before she goes blind lol
Has always been the best place for Russian food. Yesterday was different. Karacho (apart from a smaller, than usual, portion) was watery, very little meat. Schnitzel was OK, but overall very mediocre. Do you, guys, have a new chef?
We went to the Ocean View Café because they had good reviews online. Oh, don’t always rely on reviews. Ambience. I believe they are going for a nautical theme, with all the ships, etc. however, bright screens with food on the wall and Nicholas Cage photos on the walls are distracting. Add a tile floor, white walls and cheesy Russian music in the background, you be the judge. I take one star away for the ambience. Service. It was ok. All male servers dressed in white shirts looked quite cute, however, if you are not a Russian speaker, you might have some troubles communicating there as all servers are Russian speaking and some of them do not have English skills. Food. We ordered three items- Farmers Cheese Blintzes. It is basically a crepe, filled with sweet farmers cheese filling and served with jam and sour cream. It was divine! I ate and kept saying, it Is just the way my mom used to make them. They were soooo good. I would go back to the Ocean Side for Farmers Cheese Blintzes. They were on point! We also ordered meat vareniki, boiled. They were good. Did not love them and did not hate them. They were pretty good. We ate them because we were hungry. Last dish we ordered was lamb shish kebab. What a huge mistake! We were served what looked like lamb ribs, shanks on a bone. There was so much fat!!! Well, while I like to have a little bacon fat here and there, I am not a fan of devouring a huge piece of just pure lamb fat. It was disgusting. It was sooo bad. Potatoes that came with it were super greasy I could not eat them. It did not look like a lamb shish kebab, although we were convinced that this is exactly it- lamb shish kebab. It was just sooooo bad, soooooo bad!!! Normally I would never, ever go back to Ocean Side Café, however, I cannot forget the Farmers Cheese Blintzes. I would go back just for them. They were so delicious that for me it saved this whole establishment from just a pure bad review. My two stars goes for the amazing Farmers Cheese Blintzes! I take extra stars away for the horrific lamb shish kebab dish!!!
This is my second visit here. I visited on a Sunday evening with my family. Food quality was bad. We ordered the borscht, it was undersalted and nothing else was there besides beets. So it was like a hot watered down beet soup. No meat, nothing. We also ordered fried liver and it tasted like burned carbon, We could not eat this at all. It was left untouched. We mentioned this to the waiter and no apologies, nothing. It was fully charged on my bill. We also ordered 2 compot and only received one. Terrible food. Terrible service. Will not come here again. Will not recommend to anyone. Find yourself another local russian restaurant.
A friend of mine let me inspect the premises, it was completely unsanitary, I heard people in the kitchen insulting visitors, my friend knows Russian and he translated for me, there were a lot of cockroaches, some cat was walking around the kitchen, in general it was just disgusting
