I truly hope they reopen this place. Anytime I would go thru there. This is a true must stop. I grew up hating peas and still do. But however, they make the split pea soup here. Wow, it is so good. That with different breads. Yum. If you haven't tried it, head to your store as some carry the pea soup Anderson brand in a can. Yes, it is almost as good. I would hit the links in solving and grab some vanishes and then head for a good meal here of the soup and breads.
How do I begin??? I used to come to this establishment back in the 80's when my dad would take my mom, sister, brother and myself here on our Sunday drives from Newbury Park. Lots of nostalgic memories and a reminder of my youth. I don't remember the food, service or the cleanings of this place, but if I have a chance....I'd love to go back...
Renowned restaurant in Buellton, California (two miles west of Solvang) Iconic split pea soup (dialed back to appease vegetarians) BUT, never fear, just add "toppings"; bacon, ham, green onion, cheddar cheese & croutons.(I only added the first two + ample salt) Also, have the Danish sausage appetizer, SO GOOD!!! You can order from an extensive, tasty menu, many items also include the soup. EXCELLENT, on site, Danish bakery, too!!! Take home some fresh or canned pea soup. We did!!!
Pea Soup Anderson's has been a favorite travel stop if ours for decades. It's been a while since we were there, but they food is still good. The Traveler's Special has always been my choice! I was concerned about a couple things; for a place serving breakfast, 9am is awfully late to open and a couple joints within eyesight were pretty busy before then. Also, we left about 10am and there weren't the number of people we used to see. I know that rumors and property sales can hurt business and I just hope this cherished stop in our travels continues its traditions.
I dropped off the Greels Paneegler recorder to Col. Rightwheeler there at Vandenberg SF so he could see for himself the tictac people that landed in that backyard a few months ago, we'll see what they have to say now. Well, it's on to Solvang for the Armored Whoopbanger Relay with my pal Delcampo D'Angelo Tripplewadd, but first we're stopping at the Anderson's Split Pea Soup Restaurant for perhaps the best split pea soup in the country. I put extra ham in mine with a good amount of hot sauce. 5 stars ☆☆☆☆☆
We always like to stop by Andersen's Pea Soup when we visit this area. The pea soup was delicious! I like to request the toppings to put in the soup . They have other food too, if you aren't into pea soup.. and I overheard the waitress mention they serve breakfast all day. The shop here also sells knick knacks and Andersen merchandise.
They are a family tradition and it's sad how they no longer advertising and don't seem to be interested in keeping the legacy going. Last couple times they have been closed on that day which is a Huge Bummer after looking forward to dinner for a few hundred miles. But! When open. They are very much worth it. *FINALLY caught them Open. Hit the spot. Sure missed the Pea Soup.
The pea soup is delicious and served with additions such as green onions, ham, and bacon, but it also stands very well on its own. My sister and I were also very pleased with the patty melt and with breakfast the next day of waffles, ham and cheese omelette, and crispy hash browns. The staff were friendly and accommodating.
Yes, it's a restaurant that specializes exclusively in pea soup. And, yes, it's incredible. Pro-tip: don't forget to go around the outside corner from the entrance to find a collection of fun kids' ride-ons. We spent almost as much time on these dinky classic rides than we did in the restaurant. This is a can't-miss as you're traveling up or down the coast.
We enjoyed everything about this place except the prices! The food was delicious but still felt overpriced. We had pea soup, salad, sandwiches, pancakes, and pasta for our family. The building is very interesting and there's an attached history display area. The gift shop had some cute things in it too.
Everything they say about this restaurant is true. Old retro vibe because it hasn't changed and it's really the better for it. Food is excellent, yes get the pea soup if you never had it, but all of it is good. Also bring an appetite. You get a lot more than you bargain for. Large plates won't leave you hungry. All in all a wonderful destination
There used to be huge billboard sign off the 101 South In Gilroy , I think, no the waiter says it’s still there ; It has the iconic two characters HAP PEA and Slip Pea , I think. It is a beacon of the good old days, like Bob’s Big Boys , but not a chain , this is a limited edition, so they survived.Their famous pea soup still tastes as delicious as back in the day. Recipe untouched! Unlike a Big Mac that has changed over the years, here you get the classic burger in classic diner attire. Close to Solvang and the classic bar The Hitching Post , which was made famous by the film SIDEWAYS. Also , for the young and young of heart , THE OSTRICH FARM , let’s you feed these amazing and curious animals, plus original souvenirs and art.
Wow, we had a great meal, the soup was hot and portions were large and service was very good, on Christmas day it was a real blessing to have chosen this resturant. My Prime Rib was the best I have ever hard cooked to perfection with a seasoning on the edge was really tasty, yum, took a picture! Thanks Andersons
The split pea soup which is completely vegetarian is totally worth the stop here at the restaurant. It was tasty and filling and felt freahly made, unlike usual soups at other places that taste like re-heated canned soups. I recommend the all you can eat soup option if you're there for just the soup. It comes with choice of toppings like croutons scallions etc. with a side of pumpernickel bread. Very filling and should last for a few hours if you're on the road. Visit this place for a meal along with your visit to Solvang.
This restaurant is located in Buellton. Calif is right off the 246 highway freeway offramp. Plenty of parking. It hasn't changed much over the years. I used to visit as a teenager. The pea soup is outstanding. They have other food like breakfast and sandwiches. The service is terrific. They make you feel at home. The bathrooms are sparkling clean and the gift shop is worth taking a look at on your way out. Overall, this is a very quiet and restful pit stop if you are traveling on the U.S. 101 highway. Gas stations located nearby.
We ordered split pea soup, chicken burgers, Very veggie sandwich with Potato salad. The atmosphere, service and food was good. We liked split pea soup it's similar to "Ragda"(Desi food reference). Limited vegetarian options. Very veggie sandwich was a good vegetarian option. Chicken burger was blend, good for American taste but not for Indians. I won't recommend potato salad, better to get Very veggie sandwich with french fries or fresh fruits.
Wonderful restaurant with very good food. As a lover of split pea soup life doesn’t get much better when you can have a bowl with your meal. As it was St. Paddy’s Day had to have the Corned Beef and Cabbage. The meat was super tender and well flavored. Over all a great visit and hope to come back.
We were greated outside by a gentleman that offered to take our picture. Once inside Dana our waitress took our order and made sure our drinks were filled as well as our soup bowl. We will definitely come back for other things on the menu. We had the bread bowl pea.soup. Thank you Dana and the gentleman outside again for making our visit so memorable
Where to start! It's a nice pit stop between LA and the Central valley. Their service is prompt, the food is good, the restrooms are clean and there are plenty of them. Plus there's a gift shop. Large parking lot has a photo op for kids and there is even a motel owned by them next door. These family style restaurants are wonderful and worth supporting. Stop by and enjoy!
❤️❤️❤️ The split pea soup was what I went in for. The coffee was so smooth... Love the service, too. I have to point out this bus boy who was very diligent, very polite, it's amazing watching this young man work!! He literally looked for things to do when he had time. Best of luck to him.
Stayed here for my birthday with a group of 10 friends. We made the reservations weeks in advance. Our rooms were all close together and they made sure two of the rooms were downstairs because they could not use stairs. The only downfall was the rooms were not ready at 3pm for check in. Very comfortable beds and nice updated rooms. The price was excellent. I will stay here again when traveling to Solvang.
Not only is this place in a cute danish building, but the restaurant is more than just that! There are shops located in the building, including a year-round Christmas shop, customer-only bathrooms, a decent wine selection and a little bakery at the front of the restaurant. Everyone inside was pretty friendly, the service was nice, and there was no wait to order a soup to go and some danishes. If you haven't tried the pea soup at Pea Soup Andersen's you are missing out!! It will be the best (right below grandma's) pea soup you will ever order! I need to have my soup with all the extra fixings on the side, and the up charge for it is not bad. Overall, anyone looking for delicious food and good service near Buellton must try here!
So nostalgic ! Been coming to Andersen’s for years. I always get the Travelor’s Special $14.99 (AYCE pea soup, bread basket, and a drink) and a Danish Waffle. I normally can eat 1-2 bowls. It’s sooooo filling but so good. They have a big parking lot and even an area for larger rigs and RVs to park. There are two restrooms but the one by the gift store is much bigger and emptier. The gift shop feels kind of sad now. In its glory days, it was so lively and full of fun souvenirs items. Now the shelves are emptier and the inventory doesn’t seem to update with the times. But forget about all that, come for the soup! A nice pit stop for food and a restroom break.
I have come here many times in my life. As a kid my parents would take us here to eat and even my grandparents and other relatives would meet us here. Itook my wife here on our honeymoon and my best friend and his wife had their reception here. I an writing this review in the hopes it will inspire some one to get it running again. The soup was great. The burgers good. The service was great back in the day. Supposedly the upstairs dining area is haunted. They used to be famous enough for the split pea soup to be sold in cans in markets all over the state. You can find a PSA in Santa Nella on the 5 if you want it give them a try and I highly recommend it. Please bring it back.
Per the previous reviews, the location itself is a bit rundown. Although I found the service for my takeout order pretty good. Also, at the south end of the restaurant they have a general store and a little museum for the city of Buellton which allowed me to pass the time while I was waiting for my food to be prepared. The chicken pot pie and the Count of Monte Cristo sandwich were both fantastic! I would definitely recommend the food.
The idea of a restaurant with cuisine centered around pea soup, of all things, was not wildly appealing to me. Passing through the Solvang area, the kitsch factor drew is in, and I'm glad it did! The staff was very welcoming and attentive. Our food arrived quickly, with generous portions. The chicken pot pie was creamy, well-seasoned, and filling. The top was thick and flaky, as opposed to some of the more pie like crusts you may encounter elsewhere. My wife ordered a pea soup and sandwich combo, and I am happy to report that after trying a spoonful of hers, we are both pea soup converts. It is nothing like the chalky canned slop my parents poured from a can! Flavorful and rich, with no chunks of questionable ham product, Andersen's soup is worth stopping for.
We were lucky to be seated at 8:15pm, the restaurant closes at 9pm. We were staying at the adjacent hotel and had to try their famous PEA SOUP. It did not disappoint. I was surprised to see they even offer the soup on their breakfast menu. Take the time to check out their bakery with authentic danishes and the really cute gift shop for souvenirs.
Stopped here as we have driven past this place so many times now when driving thru the area. The place is very large with a lot to look at inside. It is definitely old building and could use some freshening up, but maybe that's just part of the experience. The waitress was very nice and was hustling, it seems she was the only one on the floor. We ordered the pea soup of course and got the extra toppings. It all tasted good, slurped it down and went on our way. Haha It's definitely an experience.
Walking in looks a bit like an abandoned restaurant so it could benefit from a renovation. The food was amazing though, I had the Monte Cristo and I highly recommend as others did. We also had the chicken pot pie which was great and a BLT. I'm not a split pea soup fan but of course had to try here and it is good. Our waiter was delightful and there was no wait to get seated. Oh and milkshake was so worth it!
Place worth stopping to see the past but in the present. The structure/restaurant was one of the greats that is still up and running but sadly reduced a bit due to modernization but stayed the same to keep its charm. The restaurant is huge and the inside is also big and filled with souvenirs and pastries. Stop by this place to see a classic traditional restaurant that has survived since the 20s or maybe even longer. The stained glass windows really bring out the charm of those years yet still seem to matter because they’re in such good shape. Everyone should stop at the Pea Soup Anderson’s just to say you’ve been here but I also bought a few things to support this place so that they will stay open for as long as they can. So make every effort to visit it. You won’t be sorry you did.
This iconic restaurant is a must stop if you're in the area. It's been around for a long time. When you enter there's a gift shop and the area that's just full of Christmas decorations. The food is down home cooking classic diner food. But you must try the split pea soup. I was surprised to learn that it's vegetarian.
I have always loved Andersen's Pea Soup! Even as a kid I loved it! It was fun visiting, since I hadn't been there in over 40 years, and taking pictures of the novelty signs on the outside! The food is delicious! We ordered traditional pea soup with cheese toast. In the gift shop, they had some sample cheese and onion toast with cheese spread which was absolutely delicious! Of course we bought some to take home. We also browsed through the gift shop and bought some cans of the pea soup and some Andersen's seasoning, to take home as well. It wasn't very crowded, for a summer day, mid week, so we didn't have to wait long. Everyone was friendly and inviting except for our waitress who was NOT friendly and in fact seemed to not enjoy her job at all... that was the only downside. Overall, we enjoyed our visit and of course the food. I definitely recommend you visit and don't forget to bring home some cans of traditional Andersen's Pea Soup!
Wow, wow, wow, this place is full of everything, if you are traveling on US 101 this is a fantastic place to stretch your legs for a minute or really spend a day or a night. You will find a beautiful bed and breakfast and a real country experience specially a Pea soup 🍲 the food is fantastic and the customer service is very good. A must stop!!!!
i wish we had the pea soup, but after walking all day in the heat in Solvang we just wanted something cold like the sherbet & ice tea. but there is a giftshop and we brought home a couple cans of the split pea soup to try. only problem we had was it took a very long time to get our sherbet after we ordered it.
It was much better than we expected. We were expecting a unique experience with mediocre food but we both had the soup and salad and both were good versions of each. The pea soup is thick and flavorful and the salad was very fresh with unusually tasty croutons. Don't forget to get fixings for the soup.
Always delicious soup here. Staff was friendly and accommodating and food was flavorful and filling. Such large portions, after we had a bowl of soup each, we took two bites of our dish and boxed the rest to go home. I ordered the meatloaf - juicy, large portions, with flavorful smooth mashed potatoes and veggies. We always return for at least a bowl of soup at any location when we get a chance 👍Also grabbed some pastries to go. Although they were not fresh (we got there just before closing), they were nonetheless deliciously sweet and hit the spot after a great meal. 👍
It's soup season!!! Had to make a stop while on our little road trip. I love historic, quirky restaurants and this one delivers. The atmosphere, service and food was great. Except for the chilli :( do not try... It really tasted bland, yet expired. But other than that a fun, family lunch was enjoyed.
It's seriously like stepping back in time, such a cool spot/experience. The restaurant hosts a travel store, bakery, and the town's historic society. You get to learn about the significant history of this Pea Soup destination, and the highway it used to rely on, long before you even sit down to have your meal. The dining room looks like it hasn't changed in 50 years, and playing music just as old it's a pretty fun vibe that augments the experience. I got the travelers special with unlimited pea soup, bread, and a shake. My first time eating split pea soup and I absolutely loved it! Very filling, especially after a few bowls, and the shake was delicious as well. My partner's fish and chips was an amazing portion, just know it won't travel well if you aren't ready to eat it all right there. Prices have definitely changed a lot over the years... That's my only ding of a star - they aren't outlandish, but a bit more than you'd hope for an old timey roadside cafe.
I have been to Split Pea many times over the last 35 years when traveling up to my grandparents place and the food is good I always get the split pea bread bowl. Although my son and my dad wanted the fried chicken this time and they said it would be like 25 minutes and we weren't wanting to wait that long. I notice each time we have stopped over the last 3 years that things have started changing a bit each time.
Pea soup. Underrated everywhere but here. Andersen’s is approaching their centennial and this location smells like it’s been fastidiously cleaned with industrial products for at least that long but an underlying tinge just won’t budge without some real renovations. Not sure how much longer these authentic American highway diners will exist but this place makes me think it would be ok to move on in this century. The chicken pot pie crust was wildly good, the stew good. The toppings for the pea soup came in sad little plastic cups - ham AND bacon for some reason? Made me chuckle. The breads were not good. I love pumpernickel but theirs was bland, and the onion and cheese bread tasted like neither. Overall, if you go to a place like Andersen’s you know exactly what you’re getting in to. Luckily, they know how to deliver on the nostalgic, slightly sad and creepy but still hits-the-spot greasy spoon vibes. I think the kitchen is moving further from their roots at this location and I hope they can do a little wiggle back toward more flavor.
My wife and I travel to Buellton,CA to relax and also going to see the Gabriel Fluffy Inglesa Show at the Chumash casino resort. We were very hungry from our long trip from Los Angles,we headed to Pea Soup Anderson's it's world famous many people travel to Bueliton,CA to tryout their world famous Pea soup. The restaurant is very nice it feel like traveling to Denmark and feel like a diner. We both order a half sandwich and soup. The sandwich we decided to was the chicken salad sandwich also including their Pea soup. The waiter bought food it looks very good first I tasted the Pea soup it was very good light and full of flavor in the soup. They make the everyday and fresh the chicken sandwich was very so much flavors in the sandwich my wife and I enjoy it very much then we order dessert we got the Honey bread pudding it was very good. We enjoy the food.
Try the soup!! Creamy and not salty~!! We didn't have much of a wait and got seated in an area that made me think of a garden salarium instead of a diner. Dated but we'll kept tables and chairs. Food was delicious and fresh veggies. Only complaint was this weird smell that wafted in every so often.
Not likely to return. The 'famous' split-pea soup was not spectacular! (Not even any of the wonderful croutons, that we sampled with their delicious sharp, cheddar cheese). I did like paper placemat map :) Atmosphere is above average & interesting gift shop/merchandise, but food was just fair. Kids' pineapple juice was very tasty, & service pretty good, but otherwise unimpressed.
This would be a five star review if I were in the twilight of my life. However, I’m 38 and feel that my food was a little bit soft and bland. Evun, our waiter was decent, however it seemed like he was eager to go party with his young friends and didn’t have time care enough to make this visit memorable. I liked him though, and it could have been a worse experience. Food was ok. Pot roast sandwich should Just be called meat on bread and the beer tastes like apple juice. Jk. Apple juice was nice.
The place wasn't busy when we went on a Saturday morning. The food portions are huge, more then enough to feed one person. The food itself was okay. Most of my party agreed that everything was missing salt. We described it as your grandmother's recipes back in the 60's. The pea soup was decent and blended very smoothly. Make sure you get it with the works, otherwise the soup might be one noted unless you're a die hard fan of pea soup. Overall, the rest of the food and ambiance is what you expect from an older restaurant. Nothing fancy, homey and pretty quick. I do like the add that our waitress was excellent! So that was a plus.
We stayed at the hotel for 1 night while traveling the PCH. We had dinner at the restaurant next door and of course tried the Pea Soup. It actually was pretty good, for pea soup. This was an older establishment, though in good repair. It sort of added to the ambiance really. The hotel was ok everyone was very nice and helpful. The rooms were basic but clean and updated. The food was ok at the restaurant though honestly I cannot remember what I ordered except the pea soup. All in all, it was basically average and b9rdering bad, we were hoping at least for a cute novelty stop on a long trip. If they had custom Pea Soup Andersons items in the gift shop, this would have helped instead what we found was the same blah items found in all of the cheap gift stores from Hollywood. My son reminded me, he had the meatloaf I had the turkey. Generous portions for sure. The food was average. I would choose a different location to stop next time.
I was very excited to try this place. We called in a takeout order. The person who answered the phone was rude and off-putting. If I hadn’t wanted to try the pea soup, we would have taken our business elsewhere. I ordered a soup and salad. Upgraded the salad to Caesar for 3 bucks. This salad on its own is not worth 3 dollars. It was good, but the portion size was disappointing. I feel ripped off. Pea soup lived up to the hype. I would be willing to come back and try it again. I hope the person on the phone was just having a bad day and this isn’t how they treat their paying customers.
Got some soup to go, it was alright, my kids immediately said "it has no texture, good flavor, but your soup is better, mom". It was also expensive, 2 bowls of soup and a burger was $40, ouch. This was at lunch time. I think we will pass next time but had to try it since it said it was world famous.
Stopped here due to all the ads we saw on our road trip home. The restaurant reeked of a skunk and the bathroom smelled like a sewer. Not appetizing at all. The soup was decent. The toppings were not great quality. I don’t need to stop here again. Once was plenty. My husband felt the same way.
The food was ok. The Pea soup was wonderful. But there dishes are ok . To us it was Dinner Food. And Dinner food is great when your hungry and tired. Their gift shop was nice but over priced on some things. But this place is history, everyone should go here and have fun. Also Our waitress was kind and helpful. But when I got my Pot Roast my food was cold. .So watch out for cold food. My family I respect things that have been around a long time , and this place is history, It's a family story of struggle in a new country, family tragedy and success. So take the time and stop by and enjoy some real California history with your family.
We decided to give it a try after seeing the billboards on our way back south. Did not try the famous split pea soup. Had a salad and pot roast sandwich. Portion is generous but needs to be served warmer. Potatoes need a little more flavor. Service was good for how busy they were. Cute gift shop.
Pea soup was good. Bread and bakery great! The meatloaf was horrible-not sure if it was that day or what. It was swimming in gravy and it didnt taste like meat. It was gummy and bread like as if too much filler was used. Other items were okay. If you are into pea soup, it's a must stop location!
My family really wanted to visit Pea Soup Andersen's. It didn't live up to our expectations. The service started out good. A manager seated us. He was friendly enough. There was no waiting when we arrived. The waiter, on the other hand, was less than okay. My husband wanted the fried chicken but, was told that it would take 25 minutes. That kind of waiting is good and bad. It's good because, we found out later, that its it's made fresh to order. Our waiter didn't explain that at the time. It's bad because, we'd driven a long way and had been walking around for hours. The pea soup was tasty. The salad and bleu cheese dressing was not good at all. My sister in law did not like the onion cheese or pumpernickel breads that came with the soup. My son had pot roast and mashed potatoes. He enjoyed his meal. Another family member with us ordered a sandwich that was just terrible. He didn't even take one bite. Prices were low but, I guess you get what you pay for in a tourist spot. At least we can say that we've been there but, I don't think that we will visit again.
Two stars for food quality and waitress service. My nostalgic memories of the restaurant and the Pea soup were better left as memories. The soup tasted like soso commercial soup. We did ask to be moved because of the neighbor's conversation. The manager was Awesome!! He took care of us immediately and checked on us a couple of times... very appreciated. Five stars for him. Iced tea was Brisk fountain iced tea, chocolate milkshake tasted like it was cheap ice cream with Hershey's syrup. We got a pastry on the way out... stale. I won't go back There are too many other fresh, tasty, and modern restaurants in the area.
Let me first say the waitress did a great job and was a very kind young lady…but the food was terrible. I ordered the turkey and the turkey taste like it came straight out of the freezer into the microwave and the gravy was thick and I think the cook used so much gravy to cover up the turkey and the food was just slightly warm, far from anything fresh cooked. We also took a look at the pastries in the glass container and nothing looked fresh. In fact, they had “day old” pastries for sale on the counter and the older gentleman behind the glass counter seemed too busy fiddling with something on the counter and couldn’t be bothered. This place has really run downhill and it must be first time tourists keeping this place in business. Seriously this was bad and I attached a photo of that turkey plate. Gross.
