Opinions de Boeufhaus Chicago
Small steakhouse with a phenomenal burger. The happy hour deal with a burger, fries, and a beer or wine is an incredible deal food the price and quality of what you're getting. Staff were friendly, professional, and attentive. My only gripe was with the burger actually, the onions on mine were largely inedible skin while my wife's were all perfect.
If you're heading to Boeufhaus, come hungry. The aged steaks are delicious and live up to every bit of the hype, but the Lamb Chops are equally impressive—perfectly seasoned and cooked to a precise, tender finish. We also loved the Smoked Whitefish, but the Butternut Squash Spätzle is the absolute star—it's my favorite side and a total "must" for the table. Highly recommend!
Really great experience. Felt lowkey and calm. Steak was delicious, we went with the aged KC cut. I thought the precut steak works for sharing and I thought it made for nice presentations. The short rib beneigh was great. The lobster roll was fine but skipable. The burger was delicious, almost like a tartar patty with some char on the outside, which at a place like this is awesome. Looking forward to going back.
Came in for dinner a few weeks ago for date night. Very cozy and intimate atmosphere but not too formal. We enjoyed everything, especially the grilled corn on special and the scallops. The steak, of course, was also good. I’d personally pass on the mushrooms next time, good but not a stand out. Unique that the steaks are on display in the front cooler. Highly recommend checking this place out! Convenient location to a few bars for a pre or post-dinner drink as well.
We were able to grab a reservation here before moving out of state and we’re so glad we did. Boeufhaus was a real treat. We loved everything our waiter recommended. The pasta and short rib beignets were delicious. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. We were very impressed with the meal and we’ll be back.
Very pleased with the food, very delicious. My only note was I had assumed that the duck breast would be wild caught (which is an odd assumption on my part), but it was farm raised and corn fed. Unfortunately, you can really taste the corn diet in the fat. My recommendation would be to get farm raised ducks, but to buy them from somewhere that doesn't feed them mainly on corn, as this will lead to a better quality meat.
People talk about Alinea (I've been there), how amazing it is. What they should be talking about is Boeufhaus. Food was better, atmosphere and it didn't have that knose up feel. Just quality across the board. Service, atmosphere, and food where all top notch. If you want dinner and a show and pay out the knose. Sure go to Alinea, it's an experience. BUT if you just want a excellent dinning experience BOEUFHAUS! Photo isn't great because it was so good and we just started eating.
We’ve wanted to try Boeufhaus for a long time and finally made it here for a birthday dinner. We had the oysters, the salade du marché, NY strip au poivre w/ roasted mushrooms. All excellent. For dessert- the chiffon cake- loved the tart lemon and crunchy pistachios against the spongy cake. We look forward to coming back.
Reasonable happy hour specials including a shrimp cocktail and drinks. We had the ribeye and pretzel gnocchi which were both veery good!
A great steak house in Chicago without the stuffy white table cloth atmosphere that you may find at other places. Short rib beignets are a must, steak was cooked perfectly, and the sides were delicious. For the price though would have been nice to have at least some complimentary bread and butter. If you’re looking for a steakhouse in Chicago this is a cool and consistent spot.
Celebrating 2 birthdays!! The food is excellent!! The staff was just as excellent!! Maybe a little pricey, but in this economy! I think everything is pricey!! Highly recommend!!
Came for the happy hour, had a dirty gin martini, happy hour beignets, and a burger with a German Pilsner. Food was excellent, service was a little missing, and vibes were good.
Boeufhaus is such an underrated spot, but that’s why I love it because I know I can usually get a reservation in a pinch. I’ve been coming here for a while and it’s usually a go to for me when guests are visiting Chicago. I think it’s one of the best steakhouses in the city! The staff are excellent, and the food is even better. They often have some good specials going on weeknights, and pro tip, if you want the burger you have to sit at the bar. For starters I always recommend the fried perch, it’s one of my favorite bites in Chicago. Perfectly crispy and light. Also the short rib beignets, shrimp cocktail, and steak tartare are all excellent. For mains, they make a fantastic duck breast, the steak frites are great as well but if you’re with a group either get a Ribeye or Porterhouse for the table, trust me. They dry age their meats so you get an incredible flavor and they’re perfectly cooked every time. Truly one of my favorite places to go, tonight was my first time trying the burger, and it did not disappoint!
We are from out-of-country and were looking for a Chicago steak experience. We found this restaurant on Eater Chicago with aged beef. Looked perfect. When we arrived, the staff was very welcoming. The music was a bit loud and we asked if they could turn it down. Which they did graciously. The ribeye was cooked to perfection. Nutty because of the age. The belgian-style fries spot-on. They have a very good selection of French wines, but we wanted to try an American wine. The sommelier recommended a beautiful Grenache. The owner came and spoke to us about his philosophy and the wine list. Overall amazing experience. Thank you.
Walked in with no reservation at the front bar. The steak frites were outstanding. Fries that were crisp with some killer sauce. steak was cooked perfect. Priced on the higher side, and includes 22% gratuity fyi
Wow, what an incredible date night restaurant! Between the cozy, neighborhood feel, the unbelievably wonderful food, and the excellent service, I would absolutely recommend this spot. We ordered the Short Rib Beignets which we were told are super popular and have been on the menu since the restaurant opened. These were phenomenal, and if you’ve never been, you should be sure to order these! We also had the cavatelli, the dry aged Porterhouse steak, and the fries for dinner. We finished the meal off with the sundae. The steak was one of the best that I have ever had in my life. The quality of the meat combined with the flavor was to die for (I say this as a steak lover!). We sat at the bar, and had excellent service the entire night. This was an expensive meal, but the quality of the food and service match what we paid. Perfect for a special night out!
Impeccable service, tasty food, and great atmosphere. The music isn’t too loud which is a nice touch. The ribeye was delicious. You can tell it’s not a typical corn-fed commercial breed of cow. Great crust on the steak and the bordelaise was very good. The escargot is a must order, so tasty. Cocktails are great.
Quaint, honest, elevated. Top-notch execution with next-level ingredients served with little pretentiousness. The steak tartar was solid. The escargot is a must. And you won't be disappointed with any of the steak options. Only thing I'd like to see is a deeper scotch/whiskey selection, but I get it, it's French/German. Edit/addition: I went for lunch the other day. Shocker, it's still amazing. The burger is insanely underrated. Could be one of the best in town...
There are really too many good things to say about this place. Amazing food and drink. Great service.. I’d say make a reservation the place has limited seating and can fill up quickly.
Sat at the bar on a Friday night and started things off with a wonderful Martini. From there we got a half dozen oysters that were shucked perfectly, Escargot that was full of garlic and an amazing 30oz Porterhouse for two. One of the better steaks I have had in Chicago in awhile.
From the service to the food this place was amazing and Brad made the night even better! You could definitely taste flavor throughout every dish. The short rib beignets were amazing and the scallops were big portions and cooked just right. The steak had an amazing flavor, we got the porterhouse and the ribeye. The ribeye had a more umami flavor to it, but it’s amazing how different parts of the porterhouse had different flavors due to one part being a strip and the other a filet. Also the fries couldn’t have been better, especially the aioli to dip in. The sorbet at the end was super refreshing the passion fruit was my favorite! You pay for you what you get when you come here and they do offer menu items to accommodate anyone’s budget, definitely will be back, a top 3 steakhouse in my opinion no doubt!
I never heard of this place, and decided to try it on a whim with my gf. We were in the area and felt like a good dinner. Walked in on a Thursday night; we had no reservation, but lucked out by getting the last open table at 730ish. The place is small, and there isn't much space between the few tables they have. But once we were seated, everything was a win. Tried the short rib beignets for an appetizer. Interesting sweet/savory mix; I dug it. For the main course, I went with the NY strip, fries and mushrooms. Every bite was excellent and nothing survived. That said, my gf had the lamb and she thought it was just ok. It was a large piece of meat but she didn't quite dig the flavor. We were too full for dessert, but did try several drinks. Do yourself a favor and try the Surfer on Acid.... It was incredible. My gf had the Healthy Option and that was really good too. The only drag for me is the proximity to other patrons. I don't like being super close to strangers when I'm dropping serious coin to dine. The characters at the table next to us were audible so I heard EVERYTHING discussed. So if you're looking for a super intimate evening, keep this in mind.
Great experience! Staff was lovely and attentive. The food came out at a good pace and we enjoyed so many different things!
What an awesome experience. The drinks were exquisite with quirky cute names and the steak was fabulous. The polenta and other sides were great as well. Wine was top notch and the server ( Christina ) was beyond !!!!!! Will go again
My girlfriend and I came into this experience really just wanting to eat some steak tartare but decided to go all in, and we don’t regret it at all. Everything we ordered from the short rib beignets to the aged ribeye was *chef’s kiss* If I had to critique one thing it would be the drinks(?) My girlfriends lemon drop had a pretty medicinal taste which we diluted a bit and my old fashioned was, in my opinion, a bit too bitter; however, we overlooked it because of the food.
Best ribeye I’ve had in a long long time. The price reflects that fact but well worth it! Foie gras starter special was also on point. Service was a team effort and we never wanted for anything. Wish they had at least one Napa or Sonoma cab on the list but the wine selections were varied enough to find what you want.
Hands down best dining experience I've ever had! Went here for an anniversary, and the hospitality and attention to detail were impeccable. My date and I felt so seen and cared for the entire night. As for the food... still daydreaming about it. Can't recommend this place enough!
Been dining at Boeufhaus since opening month and still does not disappoint. Must do’s: escargot, pastrami-cured salmon, The Tartare of Boeuf. The finale, a flawlessly cooked duck breast. Get the espresso Martini. Pro tip: eat a steak!
First time here. My belly and wallet have no regrets. All the apps and side dishes had lovely textures, flavor and a perfect amount of acid. The only dish I didn't care for was the tartare, which was very salty. Bone-in ribeye cooked medium rare was a little blue but I didn't mind that at all, and bearnaise was 👌 Great service, great wine list, great cocktails.
A great cozy date night on a chilly fall afternoon. I am not much of a steak eater, so I was a little hesitant when my husband asked if we could go to this place as a restaruant, but this was the best steak I have ever had! Crispy on the outside with a smooth delicious center. We also had the pretzle gnocchi which was fantastic. Excellent NA drinks! It was a little noisy inside but this is anticipated with the small space and did not take away from the spectacular evening,
Boeufhaus is amazing. I appreciate the staffs and managers kindness to me even though I have autism and their food is amazing and really good. Owner Brian and GM David do a good job running the place. A lot of people like how it’s away from downtown an how Boeufhaus is very attentive to making good food. Amazing steak frites. Must come back. 10/10.
Really enjoyed my recent experience at Boeufhaus! The service was authentic and genuine and very cool but not pretentious. The wine selection was incredible, the martinis were perfect, and the sparerib beignets and raw oysters were absolutely to die for. I highly recommend getting a reservation and catching a show at Empty Bottle for the perfect night out. I look forward to coming back for the steak and checking out their happy hour.
I moved out of the city a few years ago but I loved this restaurant so much I recommended it to a friend that is about to visit Chicago. I started going when they first opened and every meal was better than the last. Whoever was in charge started giving me samples of new things they were trying in the kitchen and when I realized I never left a five star review I needed to correct that. Best steakhouse in Chicago and that should be all the information you need. Enjoy!!!!
Great ambience. Food was good. We had a beef beignets for starters which is a must-have. For mains, we had porkchops and New York Stripes. On the sides we got mushrooms and fries. Huge portion sizes. We got a sundae for desert which you should definitely try.
I really had high hopes for this restaurant, the reviews are stellar. What is awesome, their service and happy hour options. What wasn't, their flavors, or lack thereof, in relation to price. I also had their pistachio cake to go, had one bite and in the trash. Wasn't good. I LOVED our server though. He was awesome!
Went here for a birthday dinner and had a great experience! The new york strip was perfection and appetizers & dessert were good. If I could change anything I wish there was better bread. Service and atmosphere both good, but not exceptional.
Went here for a happy hour special because I'd heard so much about the short rib beignets, wound up getting the beef on weck as well. The jus served with both is great! The beignets and sandwich were above average, but if I'm honest not worth going out of the way for. At $2 apiece, you could make a good meal out of the beignets and a draft or 2, but the sandwich and chips were just missing something extra. Service was great, and I'm happy to support any business that pays its servers well with a service charge instead of relying on tips. But I probably won't go again, too many places with more adventurous food at a lower price point.
Overhyped and definitely missed the mark in terms of quality and service. Despite having a reservation, we still have to wait over half an hour to get seated. There was no apology or acknowledgement of such a long wait time. Once we got to the table, we were an inch away from the table next to us, so there was no privacy. Service was average at best. The best dishes of the night were the appetizers and the sides. The steak tartare was great and the carrots were excellent. Loved the beef fat fries too. The porterhouse steak was just ok and not the star of the evening as expected. Disappointed in the quality. The flavor was lacking. Wine list is severely overpriced for average quality bottles. Overall, the value for the money just wasn't there.
The bone-in ribeye was served sliced with the bone cut off. In my opinion, serving cut steak, not meant to top a salad, is against the well-known rules of serving a bone in medium rare steak. Needless to say, the $110 ribeye lacked flavor and was not the star of my experience. The steak tartare was delicious, but unfortunately, it was served with toasted slices of plain white bread. What a miss. Thankfully, the "New Brunswick" raw oysters were exquisite and shucked masterfullly! Their signature cocktail, the "Humboldt Sour" is a must try, simply scientific! I recommend sitting at the bar, as the bartender was knowledgeable about the menu and attentive.
Been wanting to come here for awhile. As this is a steakhouse the steak was good, but not THE best. Definitely will be back to try out different things on the menu.
Super expensive now. What used to be like ~200$ for a nice steak dinner is now like 400$. I think they are good, but not that good. Nice drinks and appetizers, I’m not going anymore in the near future.
Our experience at Boeufhaus was great, although very loud. The food was delicious, and our waiter was wonderful. The only downfall happened 2 days after our meal there when I went to re-heat our left-over steak frites and New York strip and found they gave us the wrong food. Granted we were a table of 5 (total bill over $750), but if you calculate just our steak portion price was $142, we probably lost out on $50 worth of meat that had been leftover. I guess it taught us to double check our take home containers in the future.
I'm so sad. I really used to like this place but this time was disappointing. Shrimp cocktail was great, hamachi crudo was soooooo lacking, the steak was ok..... Sauces that came with were broken. The side of mushrooms were good. Idk if it was bc it was nye but I had higher hopes.
Came here solo for steak frites after finding Le Bouchon unexpectedly closed. I really enjoyed the service and atmosphere at the bar but the steak itself was disappointing. A tough cut, and instead of au poivre it was served with an oddly solid quenelle of bearnaise and an unpleasantly salty sauce diane. I overheard another patron sending his medium rare steak back for being too rare, which I assumed was fussiness on his part, but to my surprise my medium rare came out an indisputable rare as well. I enjoy a rare cook but not on a chewier cut like bavette. All in all, not a steakhouse I’d return to in a city full of great choices.
The place is dark and cramped, could barely get into my booth. Intimate I guess. There was loud sluggish hip hop playing like I was at Ramen San or something. My martini arrived cool, not cold. Only got 2 olives though I asked for extra. No biggie. The tartare was inedibly salty and had little bits of sinew stringing together the chunks of filet, and the beignets were also over-seasoned, and soggy and greasy. The ribeye was perfectly cooked but woefully underseasoned. The lamb was bland too and the accoutrements didn’t pair right, whatever was pickled on that plate was a total acid bomb that fried my palette. The spaetzle tasted like it had been cooked the previous week and the squash was bland, paired with Brussels that were so bitter I could barely swallow. I love Brussels and these were just wrong. The fries were soggy and sad which was a bummer cause I was looking forward to excellent fries. Nope. The bernaise with the steak was served cold, like butter, which I found very odd and unappetizing. The other steak sauces were astringent and bitter. Overall, none of the food was right, the seasoning was all over the place, and I don’t have a single bite of anything that delighted me. Maybe it’s cause I was there on a Monday but nothing tasted fresh. It was like all the food had been sitting in the pass since the previous day. The bill for 3 was $380. The service was utterly average, but I can’t knock front of house for middling service. But the food was just all wrong. Which for the price is very tough to excuse. I must say though, the cantaloupe gelato was absolutely outstanding. Some of the tastiest gelato I’ve ever had. And the affogato they got right. Overall, what a disappointment. It felt like none of the chefs were tasting anything before sending it out and everything was just totally out of whack.
Overpriced for the atmosphere and comfort offered, feels like a low profile pub with karaoke. The place feels poorly furnished and uninviting. The food was just average at best, nothing that justifies the cost. On top of that, they automatically added a 22% gratuity to the bill, despite the service being far from impressive. Overall, a very disappointing experience, definitely not worth returning.
Normally I try to only leave positive reviews, but this was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had at a steak house. The quality was great, but it didn't come out hot at all. In fact felt below room temp. Guarantee they cooked in a pan without finishing in the oven. Crust was very good but meat was poorly seasoned. The waiter we had was unobservant and detracted from the experience. I asked for his recommendations and he simply read through the entire specials menu. I clarified, and he said “well it's all good.” Mentioned my fish allergy and he said that the pans weren't cleaned well enough to prevent cross contamination. The manager then came over to correct him and said they do clean their pans and that the chef would oversee it personally. I appreciated this, but it shouldn’t have been necessary. Shrimp cocktail was fire and drinks were reasonable. But the price was 1.5x Wolfgang's with the experience being 1/10th as quality. Waste of money, time, and stomach capacity.
Food and service has been amazing in the past. Really disappointed tonight, made a reservation for a celebration tonight, got there on time and just waited. Waited for a full 20 minutes. We were tired and hungry, on our way out, they said there was a table being set up, but at that point it wasn’t worth it. They just kept repeating just a few minutes, or any minute now, but if I have a reservation, it shouldn’t have taken 20 minutes. It even looked like a group before us didn’t get seated either, I heard them saying they needed to leave and the hostess apologizing. Never had to wait so long for a restaurant that we already had a reservation for.
It’s very expensive place. But I don’t thin the taste and value back the price up. Everything is super salty.. even the garnish on the beef tartar. I tasted some and it was so overly salty that it ruined my taste for the rest of the meal. My scallops were horrible. They tasted really heavy again in salt and I have to say it’s the worst I’ve had so far in my life due to maybe a very questionable and unfresh supply .. I tasted ammonia when I cut it open and put it in my mouth. I don’t know what to say it was so bad.. I ate half a piece and the rest was eaten by my husband who hated to waste 50 dollars on 3 scallops. This is the biggest scam I’ve had in the eatery scene in Chicago I’ll say. One more thing to make: the smallest oysters I’ve had in my life!!! I’ve been around the world eating at all kinds of restaurants and I’ve just come home from the oyster capital of France CANCALE. Honestly you should be ashamed of the oyster you serve given the price people pay. It’s so small that…. I felt funny when the waiter came around and asked us how we liked it. I mean are you serious????
Me and my wife got extremely sick here. I messaged this establishment letting them know how sick we had become after dining here and they sent what looked like a ChatGPT response saying that they practice high quality safety standards blah blah blah. So the manager was closely watching every single cook inside the kitchen the whole night making sure nothing was cross contaminated? Yeah I’m sure. Spend hundreds of dollars on a date night in this economy only for both of us to fall extremely ill like never before. My whole Super Bowl Sunday was absolutely ruined because of this “fine dining restaurant”. I highly recommend not dining here, and if you do, at least I tried to warn you.
