Among my favorite places for a quality breakfast. A fair warning: this place is quality over speed. Expect longer than usual wait time as the food is made from scratch...but the food is well worth the wait. Big portions and delicious food. I just wish they had a morning after style burger since they make such wonderful eggs. (Morning after style is a burger with eggs, bacon on it)

Amazing staff - so friendly and efficient. We were there for less than 5 minutes and had at least 3 people trying to help us. Smiles and amazing attitudes abound with everyone. Food was amazing, huge portions and great prices. They have an amazing sorbet mimosa!

Good food & great service. Helpful & nice. Indoor & outdoor seating.

Had the biscuits and gravy with sausage. It was delicious! I'm a maker of scratch gravy, and mine was better, but there's was the best I have tasted at a restaurant.

This restaurant always seems to offer more than exceptional service and the cooks know exactly how to make my order as specified. Dee is an amazing role model for the staff to follow. Food is fresh, delicious and just the right price for each meal. Yummy. Will be back.

This is my favorite spot to get breakfast in Chico. Service is always great. In 10+ years my order has only been wrong 1 time and I ate it anyway because I thought it looked delicious and it was. It's an old school diner set up and can be pretty loud but the conversation noise adds to the atmosphere rather than being a negative aspect. I usually get the Denver omelet with country potatoes as a side and a English muffin it never disappoints. Their pancakes are huge and the coffee is on point.

Absolutely delicious chipotle and cheddar burger (which is Thursday's Gourmet Burger of the Day) with fantastic garlic fries. Service was prompt and friendly even though we were there right at lunch time. This burger is among my top 3 of all time, I loved it! If I were local I would totally come back here on another Thursday.

Excellent baked goods. One of our favorites is the Cinnamon Swirl bread. It makes excellent toast.

The waitresses are very observant and on top of things. Recommend going early to about the crowd. It's very popular and very good. Will always recommend if someone is here to the Chico area. They are also taking social distancing seriously and have limited tables.

I've been going to Morning Thunder for a long time and have never had a bad experience. The food is always amazing and the portions are humongous! The owner Dee is wonderful and always makes me feel like family. If you're planning on going out to eat breakfast or lunch, Morning Thunder needs to be the top choice!

Well established with a down home atmosphere. It's relatively small so lots of folks talking. Service is genuine and just enough attention. Food is absolutely great and portion is more than generous.

Just some really solid breakfast and lunch food with good service. Coffee is good, the area around the cafe is beautiful, can’t ask for more.

Delicious breakfast. Had the avocado bacon cheese omelet. One of the best I've had. Service was outstanding.

Great food. I had the grilled turkey, cheese and mild green chili sandwich for lunch. It was fresh, and served piping hot. You can always cool things down with an old fashioned milk shake. Delicious !

This is my go to for great breakfast in Chico. I rotate the 3 different things. Always great food and service. The owner and children help run the place which keeps things consistenly running smooth.

The customer service is always amazing along with the bacon. I cannot go here and not get bacon it’s so thick and crispy. Also they make sure your meal is to your liking, making sure you feel like you are with friends when you come in. I go in with my family at least once a week sometimes twice. Bailey is one of the best waitresses in town you could ever ask for.

If you're looking good eating for breakfast, lunch and dinner, when visiting Chico, Ca this is one restaurant that surely is a hit. Nice mama's home cooking atmosphere on the inside or if you like a nice cozy outside dining experience, the morning star is one of the top picks but get there before the crowd shows or make reservations to get in before the walk-ins on the waiting list. Plenty of parking and wait seating with a view of the busy city and park. City bus transportation right at your call if needed. Only flaw is the location of restroom facility. Which is located outside the back of restaurant but it is well kept and handicap accessible. Don't forget to grab one of the keys that hang inside the restaurant before walking out to refresh yourself. Alcohol (Champagne) as well as many other drinks for your liquid likings. Be prepared to ask for a doggy bag. Big servings.

This diner is a staple in Chico. The family that owns it is always in here working with their team. My wife and I come here all the time and are never disappointed. They were super busy today, and due the popularity of this place, plan to have a little wait before you eat some excellent food, it’s well worth it. We grabbed a seat at the counter since they were available immediately and it was a pleasure to watch the staff work. They were fast, courteous and I’d also like to compliment them on how clean everything always is here. Five stars to Morning Thunder! We love this place!!!

Last time I ate there about ten years ago it was absolutely delicious. My son and I went again recently and it was just as good as I remembered! Great food, great service. My 14 year-old son said it was the best patty melt and fries he's ever had. Those fries are insane, I must agree! Highly recommended!!!

T

What a great breakfast spot! The service was on point and the prices are pretty good as well! The girlfriend and I split a chicken fried steak and an order of french toast, with a full spread of eggs, hash browns, biscuits and french roast coffee. Everything was delicious, and the portions were sizeable! For $15 per person, we both could not finish our plates for the first time in as long as we could remember. Definitely stop by if you're in the area.

Cute little diner with great service and delicious comfort breakfast food. Portions were huge and it was a great value for the money because we were able to save our leftovers for lunch! Will definitely be back next time we are in Chico!

Hidden gem. Great Dinner food. The best seasoned fries. Tricky parking, but worth it.

Cute dining room decorated in 50's reminiscent decor. Very comfy chairs and perfect sized tables. Place was pretty much full up till closing time. Enjoyed so great portion sized and delicious food. Reminds me of the good food back home. Will revisit this place. Clean, friendly and fairly fast for how busy they are. Windows surround making it feel wonderful to be inside. Can tell this is a great "locals" place, but no greasy spoon. A+!

D

Solid country fried steak here. Crispy but not all breading and the gravy was flavorful and thick without being over bearing. The biscuits at fresh and delectable. Try this place out and you won't be disappointed. The plates are huge and that's not a bad thing because I couldn't wait for lunch to eat my leftovers.

S
Shane Lezzeni

It's exactly what you would expect from an American diner. Good old American comfort food. Nothing more, nothing less and that's exactly how you want it. I chalk it up to "brilliance in the basics." The menu is not trying to be exceptional, nor does it need to be. Give get a go, you won't be disappointed.

Breakfast review:. Bring a big appetite because the servings are large. Probably the best bacon and hash browns I've eaten at a restaurant. Fluffy large pancakes cooked perfectly. I went two days in a row, different servers and 2nd chef, but the level of food and overall experience was great both days.

C
Coop

Great staff, they were very attentive though one server forgot about something but it wasn't a big deal since not just the one serves you as other staff would stop and ask if we're ready or need anything. Food was delicious. I believe I got the 1-2-3; 1 pancake, 2 eggs and 3 strips of bacon. Added strawberries to the medium pancake that was about plate size and amazing, 2 eggs over medium and their delicious crunchy bacon like it should be. My friend, I forget what it was called but it was serves like a bagel sandwich. Often with other places we worry about how hard the bagel will be as we don't like the stone like bagels at other places, but we were pleasantly surprised at how soft it was (for a bagel). Some places you have to break the outside before there's any give but you could squeeze this one. Overall very happy and satisfied. Oh and the chocolate & reese's milkshake that I got was amazing as well. So so yummy.

Great little spot, love their veggie tots. Great way to replace the carbs in hash browns if you are on keto. My hubby and I had great customer service, I cannot remember the girl that was our waitress but she was very attentive. Thank you so much, we will def be coming back for the delicious omelets.

Food was very good, bacon is tasty and thick, maple syrup is real maple syrup. The service was truly exceptional. We sat at the bar and every waitress, during a very busy Sunday morning, was absolutely spectacular and I don't say that lightly. The way they train their team should be spread across the country, the service was that good.

We love this place! We go here for breakfast weekly because of the great food and outstanding service. Dee and her team do an excellent job at making everyone feel welcomed! Our exchange daughter from Germany really enjoyed both breakfast and lunch here. We brought her parents when they visited us a couple of months ago and raved about the great food especially the banana pancakes!

There was a reason this place was so busy, the food is outstanding! Free parking available, inside and outdoor seating, and breakfast and lunch items in the menu. We were seated promptly by friendly and efficient staff. We appreciated that they would accommodate separate checks. A great variety on the menu, two of us went for omelets, the St Thomas and the California, and the third person got the Bidwell egg. Each came with a choice of potatoes or hash browns and a choice of bread items. The food arrived fast, fresh and very hot. First, the portions are very generous. The potatoes were crispy golden brown and the omelet was perfect, no watered down eggs. I brought a little more than half home to eat later. I opted for the muffins as a side and they were delicious. The service was outstanding and we will return. Tips- order an extra side of bacon because it is amazing! Carpool or be prepared to look around the shared parking lot if you go at a peak time. Bring your appetite, you won’t be disappointed!

Amazing food, great service. This place is always busy but they keep things moving well so even with a long line the wait isn't bad. Lots of options and huge portions. Worth every penny, our new regular breakfast place.

The food, incredible The staff, unbelievable The prices, reasonable The whole diner functions like a well oiled machine using the grease from the thickest, juiciest, smokiest bacon I have ever experienced to lubricate what I can only assume is a NASA trained professional arsenal of wait staff. We will be coming back. Keep up the great work!

Talking to this local gal, Haggle Humpsteller at the grocery store about where to get a great breakfast and she starts telling me..If you want this, then go there, but if you want those..then go over there. I said look lady, and I use the term loosely...I'm looking for eggs with country style potatoes and sausage, that's it...and I want to to taste Amazing Delicious! So ..She says oh, then you want to go to the Morning Thunder Café because it's the best joint in town! ☆☆☆☆☆

Omg, I have to say this is the spot for filling the belly. Our good friends brought us here for breakfast and I have to say the Food was extremely good, service was spot on and very attentive. Prices are more than fair for the proportions you receive. I would also like to say this establishment has the cleanest restrooms anywhere near I-5. I Will be back for sure, hell I would drive the four hours to come eat breakfast here.

The good.. Excellent tasting and huge portions. A local favorite and always busy with people. The bad.. The wait can be long and you have to sign in when you arrive to be put on the wait list. The bathroom is outside and one key to unlock the bathroom door. Can be loud inside and no WiFi. The ugly.. No ugly here, this place is great.

My favorite diner in chico. Their pancakes are out of this world, but I can't stop myself from getting a fantastic waffle! I also recommend their champagne float. Basically a pint of champagne with a dollop of fruit sorbet. Out of this world.

If you want to had the experience of a classic dining, this is the best spot. The service was on point. They came every a couple of minutes offering more coffee, water, asking if everything is ok. The food came after a few sips of coffee and a small chat. Portions seemed small, but in reality they were just perfect. Not to big, neither small, just enough. Plus the coffee was really good tasting. In addition to all that, the entire interior and building it has this classic look, that makes you feel you travel a little in time. Would totally come back, and you should check it out!

This place is a small hole in the wall but have good service. Food is good didn't really like the biscuits but they are huge. Also ordered a side of bacon and it's the best I recommend to try it. This place is great! The service is always good. It's classic dinner style food, but it's is always good. Overall great place. It can get busy, but just plan to wait if you show up on a popular day or at a popular time. IMO, it's worth the wait. Your milage may vary.

Morning Thunder Cafe is our, hands down, favorite restaurant for breakfast. The food is superb and the service is usually exemplary. However, we were there this morning, at about 8:30, and had to wait 25 minutes for our 1-2-3”s, which we received after asking the hostess when we’d get our food. Within 5 minutes the food arrived. I ordered a waffle; received a pancake. The waitress took it back, to get a waffle. In a few minutes she brought my poached eggs and bacon back, barely warm. By the time my waffle arrived, my soft poached eggs were cold and yolks setting up. My husband’s pancake was served without butter. He asked for butter. By the time it arrived the pancake was barely warm and the butter didn’t melt. Fortunately, the warmed syrup melted the butter. We will definitely be back, and in fact, bought gift cards for friends, because we know this morning’s experience was an anomaly. We love this restaurant. I felt compelled to share this review for the sake of continuity of your normally exemplary service.

The food was good. We had a big party and they said it would be 20 minutes for a table. We waited over an hour for enough room. The kids started to get fussy because of being hungry and waiting so long. The staff was very nice and did everything to make sure we had our food. The kids ordered the Minnie mouse pancake(which is still huge). The shakes are amazing. Everything was great besides the really long wait for a table.

M
Merri Jo Prusse

I had the 123, it was a nice basic breakfast. It wasn't crowded, or too noisy; kind of perfect for a leisurely dining experience. The server was attentive and I felt that my food was reasonably priced. All in all, a good way to start the week.

A vintage Chico diner beloved by Chicoans everywhere. For most people this is a most go to restaurant for that late afternoon brunch. Several of the old time staff here are familiar and friendly with all the locals, at it really showcases the families and community side that Chico has. This is probably most loved for the nostalgic feeling it brings a lot of families over the quality of the food. Place is always bustling and filled with people throughout the morning and packed on weekends, but the staff is quick, attentive, and great at cleaning tables and opening and seats. The menu has unique and flavorful items named after local places at the atmosphere of the restaurant captures the vintage diner look, not by choice though. Some of the carpeting and walls could use an update, but I suppose some people like the old look it brings. The pricing is pretty standard for a local diner, the coffee is average, but the true setback is the sides that come with meals. The fruit, potatoes, toast or whatever side dish a meal comes with is usually lacking or inconsistent. The hotcakes are amazing and the bacon delicious, but a few instances of some meals lacking remove a star. Still an awesome historic spot to check in Chico; recommend giving it a try and checking out some of their weekly specials and discounts.

My 4-star rating is given from the perspective of the acceptability of a conventional United Statesean diet. Good service, large portions, some gluten-free stuff, and tasty food overall. Be prepared to wait in line, especially on week-ends. I get just the home fries here.

Underrated, This place always hits it out of the park. It is simplistic it's fast The food is always above average The quantity is good they're bacon is delicious And the girls who work this place hustle I mean what a fantastic little spot.

M
Megan Utter

There was a bit of slow service on the day we went, took nearly an hour for our food to come out. It was Sunday brunch though, so a bit of a delay was expected. I ordered the chicken fried steak, which was quite tough and didn't seem like it was cubed beforehand? Everything else was perfect though! The gravy was tasty and creamy, the eggs were perfect, toast was...toasty, my husband's pancakes were delicious, and the bacon was a highlight of the meal! Overall a good experience and we'll definitely be back to try other items on the menu.

J
Jody Schoenberger

I travel and I'm always looking for different places than the norm. I like to find the "mom and pop" cafes for breakfast. I'm being over critical on this because it's a pet peeve. Service was top notch. I had the sourdough French toast combo. All of it was excellent. Scrambled eggs were done, bacon was actually cooked, the French toast with poppy seeds was great. My only issue was the butter... (yes... I love a lot of butter on my French toast and pancakes)... it wasn't frozen ... but very hard. It takes a long time to melt and in the process cools off the FT or pancakes. Serve soft butter with FT and pancakes!!! Aside from that... outstanding ! I hope I get back to this area again. I'll be back.

I went to Morning Thunder as part of a group of 6 for a father's day breakfast. It was my first experience with this restaurant and based on my visit I would return in the future. The service was fast and friendly, and the pricing to portion ratio was great-- very generous portions. We did have one person in the group who wasn't big on breakfast, but there was a lunch menu that you can order from all day. The restaurant itself is fairly small, but the wait wasn't too bad. Another thing to note is it's table seating only, no booths, which is usually a deal-breaker for me, but because of the rest of my experience I'm willing to overlook that. They serve fountain drinks, Coke rather than Pepsi, which is a plus in my book. In short, I'd recommend this place for breakfast lovers for sure.

It’s true what they say about the bacon in this place. Good, solid choice for a classic breakfast and service.

H

Quick friendly service. Good food, with large portions. Don't sit near the back door. There was a constant stream of people in and out to the bathroom and despite a large obvious sign, no one shuts the door behind them. Gets chilly. Atmosphere in our case was loud, and we asked to move because where we initially sat there was a family allowing their child to loudly watch a movie at full volume. We moved.

I enjoyed my sourdough French toast a lot! Came with a whole bunch too. I wasn’t sure what to think about the whole sourdough thing but I loved it! My man wasn’t so happy with his sandwich though, he said the bacon was over cooked and there was too much egg. We were visiting from Oregon so I was expecting it to be really pricey just like everything else in California but it was really reasonably priced and overall I left super happy.

It has that good old American dinner vibe, good food and great service. I recommend this as a good breakfast option. I will need to come for lunch some time. The bacon, egg and cheese sandwich was great. The biscuits and gravy were good but not quite up to southern standards

We enjoyed our Sunday brunch .I love eating breakfast out but don't do so frequently because of the distance from home to Chico restaurants. The service was good in spite of the restaurant being busy. The food was ordinary. Not excellent, not inedible. Very large portions. The flavors could have been elevated with the simple use of herbs.(chives, Rosemary, cilantro at a minimum?) high five for the amazing biscuits! We will go back, I just wish I felt more excited about the thought of eating there again.

I went to this cafe based on other people's reviews. Where do I start, got there fairly early, not too many people inside. I was greeted by a pleasant young woman and asked to sit at the counter. She asked if I wanted something to drink and I ordered a coffee which arrived promptly along with a menu. I noticed that the cafe was well appointed and very clean the staff was friendly and personable. After perusing the menu I ordered the Mexican omelette, I hadn't had an omelette in many a moon. Now this is where I was let down, the omelette itself was made well but the toppings were too much. On top of the omelette was a half cup of Pace salsa and at least 4 ounces of sour cream, with that much salsa I had a pool of salsa liquid on my plate and there was way too much sour cream. Those 2 portion sizes were enough for 3 omelettes, which in turn cooled down my omelette and my breakfast experience. The potatoes were tasty yet I felt the meal was not hot enough (no steam rising from the just cooked meal), too bad the toppings killed my omelette. The service was fine, however this particular menu item was not. Perhaps I should have ordered a Denver omelette. My overall experience was okay but based on the food nothing to rave about.

Rather busy in the mornings- expect a wait. Service was exceptional despite how busy it was. Food came out quick; pancakes were very good, biscuits and gravy were edible (personally I go for southern style gravy and this just missed the mark for me).

Service was good, the gluten free waffle had an odd taste too it. The hash browns and eggs I think lacked seasoning. But everything else was fine

Easy parking, friendly service, and no waiting for table, but my oatmeal was a hot bowl of thin and watery gray gruel. Do not order the oatmeal. The golden pancakes and fried eggs that my friend ordered looked much more appetizing.

I stand by the bacon cheeseburger, wedges, and vanilla milkshakes. As a creature of habit I always order the same thing here and it’s all delicious. The ranch for the fries is also good and not some bottled junk full of soybean oil. And if it is, you wouldn’t be able to tell. On the other hand the service is 50/50. The men are significantly better waiters than the women. The men are pleasant and to the point while the women tend to be phony and emotional. The difference between your emotions and your feelings is you showing them to everyone around you. Feel however you want but don’t put your emotions on display at your job. Especially when people are just trying to have a decent meal. I say this as a person who has been frequenting this establishment for years and I seldom see new faces working here. Lastly the bathrooms are vile. If you can hold it, I recommend doing so. There’s no telling when the drains were last cleaned, but the smell is telling enough. Yes the bathrooms are also dated, but the level of cleanliness is the real issue. The lack of airflow and fresh air circulating is a major contributing factor. The kids’s meals are meager and overpriced. Truly no match for any of the competing restaurants in the area. Most kids menus serve children 12 and under but not here. If you’re feeding an athlete/athletes especially if they’re in multiple sports then I suggest ordering from the regular menu. Parking all depends on the time you arrive. The restaurant closes at 2 PM which is around the same time the junior high school across the street is let out for the day. This parking lot is a popular pick up destination for the kids. There are also several other businesses in this plaza and a few of the parking spaces are reserved exclusively for one of those businesses. Either arrive closer to the opening or closing time. Otherwise it is very likely you will have to write your name on a clipboard and wait to be called. The wait times can vary, but if you plan on dining with an elderly guest, you should know that the seating near the front entrance is extremely limited. I recommend this place if you just want a good burger to go. The kids meals are like a snack tray. The bathrooms need some freshening up. Above all else the ladies need to leave their baggage at the door. Especially the older brunette. It’s been years and we all hear your gossip, fake enthusiasm, and overall poor attitude. If you do go here be sure to read about the restaurant’s history. It’s entertaining to see how many time the name and ownership have changed over the years. Makes a person wonder what it will be named next.

There's a sign instructing you to write your own name on the waiting list that's near the door. The wait was about 30 minutes on a Sunday which is typical for the area. The coffee was decent but the food was boring. My wife had the 1, 2, 3 which is a pancake with bacon and eggs. The bacon was crispy much to get delight but the rest was alright. My daughter and I had chicken fried steak with potatoes and eggs. The chicken fried steak felt like it was just a very chewy breaded hamburger patty. The gravy just tasted like creamy salt. It wasn't too salty it just didn't have any flavor besides cream and salt. The potatoes were bland. The service wasn't bad but they definitely didn't give a welcoming vibe.

The vibe was nice, the seats were horrible ( I have major back pain and the seats slope downard) the food was ok. I am huge on customer service and did not get a hello when my husband and I walked in. Once inside the sign up front said "wait to be seated" we stood and waited for quite some time receiving no acknowledgement from the staff that saw us standing there. One of the servers finally noticed and told us to sit anywhere. Not exactly sure why we were even waiting in the first place if we could sit anywhere. Remove the sign its confusing and rude to customers standing and waiting for no reason. My husbands chicken fried steak was hard as a rock which prompted the waitress to take it off the bill. That was appreciated but my husband then was only able to eat his sides. Overall ok experience but I highly suggest training staff on customer service skills when the customer enters the door. Your staff will have happier customers if staff steps up their customer service level. Also clients shouldn't have to flag down the servers to order. We saw nearly every customer flagging down their servers.

Took my dog since their website said dog friendly. I had to carry my dog through the restaurant which was weird.Sat outside and tons of flies. Took me 20 minutes to make my order and the food was cold. Then had to fumble fory wallet while holding my dog to pay weird big time

I used to eat here, they have big portions and the biscuits are usually soft. The food is hit and miss, but the service is just awful now. I don't feel like I'm missing out by no longer being a patron.

I ate there on New Years day 2024. As I was scraping the left overs into my to go box I found a hair on the plate. I showed it to the waitress when she came back she told me she was going to give me half off because it could be a "fuzzy" from someone's sweater. My meal was $23.00 and some change. When I looked at the bill it was $16.00 and some change. Half off would have been about $11.50. The food wasn't that good either. There was way too much Biscuit in their Biscuits and Gravy. It was very dry. I will not return to their restaurant.

The tables are so wobbly, you will spill your coffee all over. When you ask for them to try and fix the table issue, they'll shove sugar packets under the wobbly legs, which still won't help. It's such a small space and gets so crowded that you will not be able to hear the person sitting right across from you. The chicken fried steak is the saddest, low-quality, ground beef patty smashed flat and coated in bland crumbs (vs an actual fried crispy skin), and the gravy only partly redeems it. There's no logic in the hype around this place. Everyone waiting outside is wasting their time. We won't be coming back. 😬

Ordered what I thought was supposed to be French toast. Instead I received a rough attempt at cooking eggs and bread at the same time . 0/10 would not recommend
