Edit: So good we went back for seconds. New menu is exceptional! Haru offers a one of a kind experience right here in Columbus. The cocktails were incredible and the sushi was top tier. An intimate dining experience with next-level service and extraordinary conversation with the Chef’s themselves. This is an experience not to be missed.
Cozy little place with exceptional food. I have been looking for a decent restaurant in Ohio for while. Traveling here has always been a challenge when it comes to food. But now, there’s Haru. I chose the 5 courses tour option and added the Wagyu. Fish was fresh and I enjoyed the flavors. The best bite of the night was the one with shrimp paste, surprisingly! Subtle but provided depth. The first sea bream dish was my least favorite…fish was very good. However, the rest was overly acidic. Service was great and the whole staff was friendly and upbeat. It will be my go to from now on.
This is a late post! Considering the change their menus every 5 weeks. Absolutely stunning presentation and service. The chef really outdoes it every time. While I haven’t tried the most recent menu I can say with certainty whatever you get will be amazing. Quality, creativity and authenticity is put into every plate served. It’s expensive but it’s worth every bit. Highly recommend pairing your courses with wine or sake additions.
Surprisingly high quality fish for Ohio! Definitely on the pricier side for a date night, but worth it. Would suggest upgrading to the premium tour, may of our fav pieces were from that round. Also shoutout to Dio for making the night fun and being so knowledgeable about the menu:) There are only like 10ish tables total? Plus 6 bar seats so highly recommend getting a reservation.
I’ve been looking forward to visiting Chef Yudi for quite some time, and I was finally able to make it there tonight! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with hospitality as warm as the hand towel. It was heartwarming to see the chef and his team take the time to cater to each person at the bar, truly making everyone feel special and valued. The food was top notch! Some of my all time favorite fish were featured on the menu. Each dish was thoughtfully garnished and paired with ingredients that the team was excited to showcase, reflecting their passion and care for their craft. Even the ice for the whisky was multifaceted! Thank you, chef!!
Absolutely amazing experience! Very attentive staff, and the food was outstanding. We did the premium tour and the food exceeded my expectations! We sat at the chef’s table and it was so fun to see them construct the dishes. The chefs were so friendly and gave in depth information about the dishes. We had such a wonderful time! Pacing of the meal was wonderful— did not feel rushed at all. We spent about an hour and 45 min there. You’re able to add premium pieces as well. They used very high quality ingredients, including black truffles and actual wasabi rhizomes. I can’t say good enough things! The chef said he changes the menu every 6 weeks. It will be difficult not to go back for each tour! I highly recommend sitting at the chef’s table for a truly unique experience and make a reservation as soon as you can!
Amazing food! The quality of ingredients was astounding, from the eel, king salmon to the bluefish, each course was thoughtfully prepared and always leaves you wanting more! We learned from the chef that they receive 2 shipments of fish a week and we can definitely taste the freshness in each roll. The service was also great, my girlfriend and I went for our anniversary and they treated us to free rosé. I also enjoyed how they give advice on how to approach each course and that definitely contributed to the experience overall. Will definitely be visiting again!
Very yummy! Maybe not for the anxious eater but for me the price is worth the experience. If you’ve never had the omakase experience bar seating is the best. Our servers were very nice and complimented our outfits. Happy to see a place like this in the Columbus Area.
Had a wonderful experience at the chef's table here this evening. Very excited to see a high quality Omakase restaurant come to Columbus. The Chef's menu was thoughtfully prepared, and all of the different combinations were delicious. I thought the presentation of 3 sushi at once in a course was lovely. Would absolutely recommend.
Very good upscale traditional sushi place. Chef is trying very hard to have an amazing experience. With a little bit of effort, this place could become a Michelin guide restaurant. Atmosphere is great even through build out is not very expensive but is done tastefully. Service is top notch and food presentation and quality is phenomenal. Some parents could have been a little bit spicier if not for Ohio but overall this restaurant delivers a very upscale experience.
WOW. Just wow. Chef Yudi and the whole entire team are masters of their craft. The entire dinner experience was nothing short of exceptional. There is so much thought and detail that goes into every single dish and it shows. Incredibly fresh fish and somehow each bite was even more flavorful than the last. The meal was so versatile with fish and preparations that I had never had before with many fish that are exceptionally difficult to find in Ohio. True artistry. The tasting menu was perfectly filling as well and we will definitely add the saki or wine tasting when we return. The entire dinner experience at the chef’s table is one of a kind. My husband and I are so excited to have Yudi and his team here in Columbus. We can’t wait to come back! Don’t hesitate it is more than worth it!!!
Very good sushi! Some of the best in Columbus! Definitely sit at the bar. Do the premium flight, worth it!
My sons and I did the premium tasting and it was all just fabulous. We sat at the bar and the chefs were all very friendly and explained everything and was happy to chat about food experiences around the world. We did some add ons at the end including some of the best uni I’ve ever had. Highly recommend Haru.
Amazing experience. Took my wife here for her birthday and sat at the chefs table. Got to interact with all of them directly and learned a lot about the fish and sushi. They were all so very kind. All of the food was so amazing. Every six weeks they change the menu up for seasonal fish so we are looking forward to going back soon as the next round is coming up next week. Love this place. Had such a wonderful time.
We had such a great experience! It was the first night of their new menu and they kept us in the loop about it being new to them as well which we appreciated. The service was very attentive and the food was amazing! The fish was super fresh. My favorites were the scallop, eel, and yellowtail hand roll. We also tried the wine and sake pairings and enjoyed those as well. The chef even stopped by our table! Very cool experience and we will definitely go back!
Haru Omakase offers an exquisite dining experience that is truly unparalleled. Whether you're seated at the counter or at a table, each tour is a delicious journey in itself. After having spent many years abroad in Asia myself, this was an authentically delectable menu. Each bite surpassed the one before it, with every piece melting in my mouth like butter. With Ricky guiding each course and Michael’s meticulous eye for detail, Chef Yudi delivers a truly transcendent experience. A culinary genius in his own right, Yudi draws on the wisdom of masters while crafting a vision uniquely his own. Ricky enhanced every tasting with thoughtful commentary, sharing the origin of each fish, the preparation techniques, and the philosophy behind the pairings. Serena, our server, exuded quiet grace and an encyclopedic knowledge of every ingredient's origin, as well. All of this transformed the meal from a fine dining event into a personal, immersive, and educational journey. This was not our first visit nor will it be our last as the consistency of excellent food is unbelievably held. ❤️ Thank you, Chef Yudi and Crew! ❤️
I had the pleasure of dinning here, let me tell you it was the best Omakase experience ever. The food is delicious 😋 worth the extra $10 for chef’s table, where you’ll experience the art right in front of you!
My husband and I had the pleasure of celebrating our anniversary at Haru last week, and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we were seated, we were warmly welcomed with complimentary celebratory wine—a thoughtful gesture that set the tone for the evening. It was wonderful to have our anniversary acknowledged, and our server went above and beyond, attentively anticipating our needs throughout the meal. I opted for the Premium Tour, while my husband chose the Tour, wanting to explore before potentially adding more dishes. Each course was beautifully presented, highlighting the natural flavors of the main ingredients. The garnishes and delicate layers of sauce enhanced the overall taste without overpowering it. Every piece of fish was incredibly fresh—especially the salmon and tuna, which melted in our mouths. My husband even remarked that the buttery texture reminded him of our sashimi experience at Tsukiji Market in Tokyo. The chefs were not only skilled but also wonderfully engaging. After chatting with them about live octopus dishes in Korea, they generously offered us complimentary octopus and uni. Both were delicious, but the uni, in particular, was outstanding—so fresh, sweet, and buttery. It perfectly captured the spirit of omakase, which is all about tailoring the meal to the customer’s preferences. As frequent omakase diners—especially when traveling to Hawaii or Japan—we were genuinely impressed by Haru’s quality. It easily stood up to some of the best experiences we’ve had in places known for fresh seafood. We’re thrilled to have a restaurant of this caliber right here in Westerville, and we left feeling grateful, satisfied, and already looking forward to our next visit.
Visiting from out of town. Unique hand crafted sushi experience with carefully well thought out flavors. Very expensive but a great once in a lifetime experience for sushi.
The first Omakase experience in Columbus does not disappoint. Everything presented was fresh and delicious. With a menu that changes every 6 weeks or so there is even greater potential down the road. I highly recommend getting a seat at the Chefs table, it’s worth every bit of the $10 charge. Discussing every part of the dinner with Chef Yudi is fantastic for any sushi lover. Also added the Sake pairing which was a nice touch and enjoyable but I’m not sure I could recommend it as for me personally it didn’t really add to the Omakase experience, but all the Sake served was tasty so to each their own. Looking forward to my next visit as well as what could be on the next menu.
I lived in Japan for 6 years and Haru Omakase was quite possibly the best Japanese inspired restaurant I’ve had the pleasure to dine at stateside. While this is not traditional sushi, the chef combines authentic Japanese elements to create a unique experience. As far as atmosphere goes, I do feel that a restaurant of this caliber, and price point, exceeds its strip mall location. Overall I had a wonderful experience. The service was excellent. Food was phenomenal. I look forward to my next visit.
This place is incredible!! Easily the best tasting sushi in Columbus. The fish just melts in your mouth and is unlike anything else in the area. The presentation of each tour was beautiful and the pacing between each did not feel rushed so you truly got to enjoy the experience. It reminded me of Veritas. The restaurant has a nice elegant lounge style feel but not pretentious and the staff is incredibly friendly and provided five star service the entire evening. Do your self a favor and make a reservation now :)
Best and highest quality food I’ve ever had. Chef was great and every course was more and more impressive. I have never left a review before but this place was worth it. The staff were extremely nice, the sake flight was great, sushi was amazing. Highly highly recommend, truly a 10/10
An Unforgettable Omakase Experience at HARU! I recently had the pleasure of dining at HARU, omakase restaurant located on Polaris Parkway, with my son, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality that set the tone for the entire evening. Each dish was a work of art, showcasing not only the freshest, highest-quality ingredients but also an incredible depth of flavor and creativity. Every bite was a new discovery, from delicate sashimi to expertly prepared rolls, with a perfect balance of textures and tastes. Chef Yudi Makassau’s skill and attention to detail were apparent in every dish, and the pacing of the meal made the experience feel like a curated journey. The atmosphere at HARU was equally impressive—intimate, yet welcoming, with a focus on creating a memorable and personal dining experience. The service was top-notch, attentive without being intrusive, and our server made sure we felt right at home. My son, who’s a bit picky with food, was equally impressed and delighted by the variety and quality of the dishes. It’s not easy to please everyone, but HARU exceeded expectations in every way. If you're looking for a truly exceptional omakase experience with incredible food and stellar service, I highly recommend HARU and Chef Yudi Makassau. I can’t wait to return!
BEST SUSHI PLACE IN COLUMBUS AREA! CHEF YUDI AND HIS STAFF ARE AMAZING! We did the Omakase offering and it was worth every penny! The sushi is amazing, fresh, and has so much flavor. The staff is veryfriendly, attentive and works amazing together. Sitting in front of the chefs and watching them prepare your courses and giving you the background of each fish and all the other ingredients in each peice is an experience on its own. Cannot recommend this place enough. Will definitely be making HARU part of our regular date night rotation! EVERYONE SHOULD TRY THIS PLACE!
Update...tonight was my 4th time here. Its a special occasion place for us. It is still amazing and definitely a must try. Our server, Serena, was exceptional. Its been a different menu each time. I love that they change the menu every 6 weeks. Exceptional dining experience. Incredibly high quality ingredients. The sake pairing was perfect and absolutely worth the addition. The matcha creme brulee may be my new favorite dessert of all time. It had the perfect amount of crunch in the sugar topping. Service was impeccable. The atmosphere is intimate, cozy, and sophisticated. It is quiet enough to have a conversation. Definitely a good night out.
A NEW Must-Try Sushi Experience in Columbus! 🍣 Columbus’s first omakase bar is an absolute game-changer. Haru Omakase delivers an intimate, immersive, and masterfully executed dining experience that transports you straight to Tokyo. Sitting at the chef’s table, I had the privilege of watching Executive Chef Yudi Makassau craft each dish with precision, artistry, and deep respect for ingredients. The five-course tasting menu was a true journey. From the deep, umami-rich Red Miso Soup to the delicate Japanese Rudder Fish, bold Spanish Mackerel with crispy garlic, and a flawless selection of king salmon, eel, barracuda, and bluefin tuna—each bite was balanced, thoughtful, and packed with layered flavors. Every course was elevated yet simple, proving that true mastery lies in restraint and execution. 🌟 Standout Feature: The craftsmanship and quality of the sushi are unmatched in Columbus. Each dish is prepared with care and precision, offering a harmonious blend of simplicity and complexity. 💰 One Disappointment: This is a premium experience with a premium price tag. My chef’s tasting with sake pairing cost over $200 including tip, making it one of the more expensive dining experiences in the city. That said, for this level of freshness and execution, it’s absolutely worth it. If you’re a true sushi lover looking for an unforgettable dining experience, Haru Omakase is a must-visit. Columbus finally has an omakase spot worth raving about!
Highly recommend this place. Love it - Love it - Love it! My husband and I have tried various omakase places before, so we’re a bit picky about it. However, Haru surprised us a lot. We went for my husband’s birthday, and everything was amazing—fresh and tasty. Each piece of fish had its own unique flavor, and you could really taste the difference. We also ordered a5 waygu ..... and it was SO GOOD. The chef said menu change every 6 weeks, we will come back.
I loved this experience. The sushi was delicious, the servers were kind, and the chefs were so knowledgeable and enjoyable. It was an amazingly romantic place, nice lighting and they treated us well for our anniversary. It was so special! My favorites were the scallop, the golden eye snapper, and the unagi. My partner also loved the Spanish mackerel and the yellowfin hand roll. Honestly everything was amazing. The crème brulee was one of the most delicious desserts l've ever had. 11/10 as far as a romantic date place.
Omakase comes back to Columbus and hopefully will stay around longer. The owners of Fukuryu decided to repurpose their Ramen place in Polaris to an omakase restaurant. They have partnered with an excellent executive chef that will be creating and preparing the meals. While omakase is supposed to be “whatever the chef” prepares for you, Chef Yudi Makassau is keeping the same set offering for about 6 weeks before refreshing with a new one. The pictures I have here are the first iteration. So while it will change eventually, you can see the artistry and creativity of the chef here. They only use the best sourced seafood and ingredients and it will be evident when you actually taste them. Don’t forget their pairings or cocktails as well as premium offerings if you are interested in more. I cannot wait to return for the next iteration of their menu. Very good price for omakase.
We came on what was the official first weekend open to the public. We had reservations, which I would encourage you to do if you plan to dine here. Finding it wasn't difficult, but at the time, at least, Google still couldn't exactly show you where it was on the map. We knew it was from the same owners as Fukuryu Ramen, so I parked near the large Fukuryu sign but didn't know where Haru was until I saw a piece of paper taped to one of the doors. I'm sure an official sign is planned. Later, our server informed us that they wanted to open immediately but hadn't secured a location, so they decided to just convert the Polaris Fukuryu Ramen location into Haru. The space is well adorned, with dark mood lighting and tasteful accents. The whole place likely seats around 50 people, with about 10 spots available at the bar upon prior request. It was intimate and quiet and a wonderful way to spend a night with good company. The menu is available online to view which isn't exactly omakase in the purest form, but being in Columbus, it's likely for the best to let people opt out of the meal ahead of time. For the basic meal (Tours), I felt the price was very reasonable for the quality and care everything received. We each added the sake pairing and then added 2 of the "premium" add-on dishes towards the end. So with tip, we were pushing $300+ out the door. It adds up fast. We'd have ordered more extra food and drinks, but the meal was already well above what we initially planned to spend. All this is to say - come prepared for a pricey meal. Every "tour" or course was better than the last - each composed of 1-3 exquisite bites that were well constructed and offered subtle but bold and nuanced variation on the classic sushi theme. I'd have happily paid to revisit a course or two, if possible. I will note that the matcha crème brûlée was excellent but very large and heavy sitting. It didn't hamper the meal, but it definitely filled us up to the point we decided against going somewhere for more drinks after. It felt a little off-theme given how delicate every other menu item was, so I'd love to see the dessert course change over time and match the finesse of the rest of the meal. The add-ons we tried were delicious, but it is important to note that most are around $20 for a single piece of nigiri. Worth trying, but they won't fill you up and are difficult to split if you only order one piece. The sake pairings were done well. I'm not someone who drinks sake often, but I'm a producer and consumer of various forms of alcohol and could immediately taste the quality of the chosen sakes. Each was smooth and delicate. We made note to find a couple of them for personal consumption later. Our service was informative and not rushed. It was obvious they were still training some of the staff, but everyone we interacted with did a wonderful job. Our meal easily took north of 2.5 hours and could have extended longer, so be aware that the experience is one meant to be savored, not rushed. Overall, we will definitely be returning, but likely not for a while since we can not afford to eat like this often. I hope to see the menu change seasonally, if not frequently, to encourage repeat business. Highly recommended.
Haru really wowed me! I don’t think there’s another restaurant like this in Columbus. The quality of the ingredients is incredible. The balance of flavors in every item was outstanding and also different from the rest. The amberjack first tour was one of my favorites. The smoky and spicy flavor from the sauce was balanced with the freshness of the daikon and cucumber. It was a great way to start off the meal and set the bar high. To be honest, I don’t think I could pick a favorite because it was all so excellent. The king salmon was definitely the best salmon I’ve ever had. We also got some premiums, like the tour taku and A5 wagyu. All top notch. To round out a wonderful meal, the matcha creme brûlée. Wow! Had to be the best creme brûlée I’ve tried to date. For the price, I’d say it’s worth it. While we didn’t sit at the bar, I think I would next time just to get closer to the action. It’s a nice and intimate atmosphere and perfect for a date night, special occasion or simply when you want to be wowed with delicious food. Thanks again! We’ll be back
Summary: great food, great quality, great drinks, great service, great experience overall. The menu changes every 6 weeks depending on what is in season. We have been here twice now and noticed improvements. We really appreciate the attention and willingness to accept and implement feedback. Pro: - All the seafood was very fresh. - A lot of thought went into each tour/menu and balancing all flavors and textures - Ambiance - Interaction with the Chef and staff - Drinks (we tried the Shiso Mojito and Sake pairing) - The price is competitive for the Midwest, but the overall amount of food is reflective of this, however, this is good for me because I’m typically forcing myself to finish the last few courses at other places and not able to enjoy the whole experience - really recommend paying the extra $10/seat to sit at the bar so that you can see the technique that goes into preparing every bite as well as interacting with the chefs. - Best bite of flounder I’ve ever had. The fusion of flounder with the umami from the miso along with the tart is the like was the perfect blend. - Chef Yudi’s menus are excellent and unique. He introduces complex flavors and textures by combining unexpected ingredients (yuzu chipotle, yuzu miso, pickled wasabi, kimchi, ume paste, curry). Even with bold choices, every ingredient can still be appreciated and nothing will ever overpower the fish. Every combination works well and compliments each other. Improvements: - during the first time we went here, the rice texture was a bit more hard on one of the bites, sort of like it wasn’t cooked properly which was not acceptable for a restaurant of this standard. During our second time, there was a huge improvement on the rice. Every bite that has rice was consistent. The rice was warm and soft, some may say softer than normal, but I enjoyed it. The flavor was perfect. - During our first time, there was one lead chef and two assistant chefs for the whole restaurant. This meant that it took a little longer between the courses/tours. And you might get seated after your reservation time if you were waiting on your table/seat to finish. For our second time, there was still one head chef, but now three assistant chefs. We really liked that the two assistant chefs from our first visit seemed like they have taken on more responsibilities. They were also training the third assistant chef. For our second visit, the courses came out at a good speed. - I would like to see a different dessert course next time as they were the same when everything else on the menu has changed. Leftover from my review of our first experience: I came after this place was only opened for 2 weeks (6 nights). I’m still giving 5/5 stars because I whole heartedly want this place to succeed, and believe the rice consistency was a fluke, and the speed will be fixed after everyone starts getting into the rhythm. It has everything it needs to be one of the top restaurants in Columbus, but just needs some fine tuning.
Absolutely the best sushi I’ve had in the Columbus area, and among my favorites I’ve had anywhere. Every course along the way was artfully prepared, and features some of the most amazingly fresh fish I’ve had that wasn’t anywhere near a coast. We can’t wait to come back to see how the menu continues to evolve.
My review of HARU The first Omakase bar in Columbus, Ohio First Course Red Miso Soup – So flavorful! Wonderful fish essence without being overly fishy. The delicate pieces of fish melt in your mouth. Shirakabegura – The sweet undertones of this sake really come through and complement the soup nicely, enriching the entire dish. Second Course Ama Ebi – Sweet and salty, like the sea. Buri – Lightly spicy and smoky. Mejina – The wasabi really comes through—light, fresh, and clean. Gimlet (Junmai Nigori) – Very fruity and floral! The presentation was beautiful! Third Course Isaki – Earthy, citrusy, lots of texture. Masunosuke – Beautiful, light, crunchy, and packed with flavor! Madai – Smoky and salty, with flavors that keep developing. Daimon – Not as sweet but full of flavor. When paired with Madai, it brought out its natural sweetness. Fourth Course Unagi – My favorite bite so far! Perfectly balanced—sweet and salty with a satisfying crunch and umami from the nori. Hon Maguro – Very well-balanced, perfectly salted. Smoked Sawara – So buttery, so garlicky, so tender—it lingers on the palate. My second favorite bite. Brooklyn Kura – Pairs so well with this course! Sweet (but not too sweet) and fruit-forward. Monkfish Liver – Smoky, marinated in red wine and kombu, with a lingering heat from the spice—enough to warm the lips without overwhelming the palate. The flavors continued to develop long after the bite was gone. Absolutely incredible! I had never tried this before, but it was undoubtedly my favorite bite of the evening. Final Bites (I was so impressed I forgot the sake because I was in bliss!) Toro – So fatty, so decadent—an explosion of flavor. Black Throat Sea Perch – Smoky, full of delicious flavors and textures. The wasabi pairs perfectly with the smoke. Wagyu – So smoky and packed with umami! Sweet, incredibly tender, and complemented beautifully by the eel sauce—a classic pairing for A5. The chef is truly curating something extraordinary here, adding his own spin and expertise to each course. This experience was not only fun and exciting but also packed with new flavor combinations, enhanced by an expertly curated sake pairing that was to die for. Not only was this the best meal I’ve had in Columbus, Ohio, but it rivals the omakase bars I’ve visited in New York City. The service was absolutely stellar—great attention to detail, a friendly and attentive staff, and deep knowledge of the menu. I don’t often give five-star ratings, but this experience unquestionably deserves one. My advice: Make a reservation well in advance and request seating at the chef’s table!
Brought my fiancé for his birthday. We are big omakase fans, and have mainly done the chefs table in Chicago, Florida and nyc , so we were a little worried initially . Needless to say right of the bat with our drinks and first course , my mind was put to rest. The courses were fantastic, everything was fresh and flavorful There were some courses I enjoyed more than others , but that was just bc of my personal likes and dislikes The fish was fresh and there were some interesting flavors throughout the tasting menu. One particular piece that stood out had a curry flavor sprinkled on top . For most part , the flavor of the fish stood out and was not drowned out by the accompaniments. We did try the wagyu which without surprise was fantastic The final course was a matcha crème brûlée which was fantastic !
Writing this review from the parking lot after our meal due to the intensity of my satisfaction :). Absolutely fantastic experience and flavors. True Omakase experience in Westerville/Columbus. So, so, so glad we saw this driving by and came in on a whim. I’ve had TONS of sushi and seafood all over (including Japan) and these are some of the best and freshest flavors I’ve ever enjoyed. 5 stars - will 100% be back next time we’re in town.
Yes yes yes! My husband and I just had dinner here and it exceeded expectations. 11/10 everything we ate was delicious, the wine pairing was great, our server Carrie was delightful, really great vibes all around. I didn’t get pics of every tour because I was wrapped up in the moment and enjoying every bite. Everything was very fresh and the flavor profiles were so interesting. I will be a regular for sure.
Finally!!! Proper omakase in Columbus! An NYC like experience. Sit at the sushi counter if possible. The chefs make it a wonderful experience. Chef and I spoke of our love for Masa together! We will be back I hope for years to come! Thank you Chef!
My fiancée and I chose to do the counter experience and it was every bit worth it. Each piece not only tasted great but was interesting in its combination of fish, sauce, and garnish. Everyone behind the counter were fantastic hosts and made the night lively. I'll always be a sucker for tuna but the eel and barracuda were absolutely delicious.
HARU Omakase was a truly unique and refreshing experience. I don't know how they did it, but they finally brought sushi to Columbus that matches the high expectations of coastal cities. Finally, we have a place for sushi! The service style was truly unique serving courses much like a tasting menu, and like a tasting menu at a fine restaurant, the food matches. Each course was unique in flavor and texture bringing my experience of sushi to the next level. I believe they have ruined other sushi restaurants for me.
Absolutely incredible experience all around. My partner E-MONEY and I went all in for the premium menu and it was definitely worth it. The fatty tuna was definitely our favorite, but the eel and salmon hand roll were also amazing. The cuttle fish to start and matcha creme brulee to finish were perfect. The service was incredible and our server was extremely knowledgeable on the menu and very nice. Great spot for date night or any special occasion!
Incredible quality fish and food. This is such a gem to be in Columbus. The only qualm is that the spacing between courses was a little too long- I understand wanting to enjoy and savor each course but we waited about 30 minutes in between each course making our total dining experience 2.5 hours for just 2 people. We were getting a little antsy by the end. Our server and the people were great though!!
Might be some of the higher qualities of sashimi/sushi we've enjoyed in the U.S. For this price, it's actually not too bad. We definitely left with a full tummy and I'd like to say me with a full heart of gratitude that we have something like this in around Columbus <3 on this side of town too!! We came for our 10th anniversary, as our work schedules cancelled our original plans to celebrate. It was a last minute booking for a Friday night, and the counter seats were no longer an option but I was happy to still get a table. We were seated in the corner at the front of the restaurant, adjacent to another two top table. This arrangement actually is where I deducted stars (otherwise, it would have been a five star experience for me); as the two tables that are 'somewhat' spread apart, aren't as apart as one would like for privacy. It seems they opted to give more space at the opposing ends of each table for service/entry, so the two tables are maybe 12" apart? It was quite distracting for me, as I felt like I was dining with the couple next to us. Unfortunately, because there is a lot of 'down time' where you're just waiting for the next course, I tried my best but it was difficult not to 'hear' what was happening next to us... My husband opted for the tour, while I chose the premium tour with sake flight, and we added one of the weekly specials: Karatsuki Hotate (scallop :d yummy!!). I accidentally ordered one for each of us, as I didn't know it would be like 8 slices of scallops and we could have shared it... oh well, it was delicious!!! The first course Inada - young yellowtail atop sunomono, Asian greens, and radish was DELIGHTFULLY REFRESHING and set the stage for the many courses to come. Notably, the freshwater eel from Korea was a wonderful surprise! The squid nigiri was also very pleasant: tender, but a little spring to the texture and not tough like some common grade. Out of all the tasty bites, the least favorite of ours would have to be the handroll. Snowcrab and scallop handroll that could have been tasty, but the seaweed for the handroll was a bit soggy for my taste, as I like my seaweed with some crunch and not stale like that (either wet or dried crunchy wakame, not like in between: not crunchy but also not dry.... OMG IS THIS WHERE I CAN USE MOIST?!?!! ^_^") Okay, sorry... I must also commend their choice of sake for the flight as well as the creativity for the first sake: elevating the nigori and make it into a mojito (nigori uses rice that is not as polished, so it comes out a little cloudy and sweet). I usually don't like nigori as it's too sweet for me... but in this mojito format, I COULD ENJOY MANY!!! :d Also, the flight is totally worth it; I cannot comment on how they pair with the nigiri/dishes much, but I can say that they are all reputable/above average sake. This is not a place for a picky eater. It's also not a place for a conservative eater. I felt bad (again, tried not to eavesdrop but...) because the young lady next to me skipped (and spit out) a few of these 'not economy' foods, which seems wasteful (not just for the food, but AT THIS PRICE!!!). The young man also commented that he enjoys dunking sushi into soy sauce; you are not provided soy sauce here because they are assuming the chef is preparing each plate as it should be. Perhaps if one asked, they wouldn't be denied (but maybe the side eye treatment? LOL)... Anyway, to each their own (and sorry I was nosey!); but all in all, I'm glad that we have something like this here now. For the price and experience, I might opt for the counter (or just come with more than one person), and would definitely recommend the premium tour just because you're already here: juSt do it! I read another comment/review that the dishes are the same and that's not how omakase is omakase... uhm, I don't think it's possible for the same night that every table has something different. It makes sense that the servers explain what the items are and it happens to be the same across the whole restaurant that same night.
I'm not sushi pro and we don't spend so much on dinning very often, but this was amazing. I've been twice now and the variety in the menu was nice. I recommend sitting at the bar for sure and being able to watch and engage with the chefs, but as always it's difficult to talk much with 3 or more people. It's expensive but I don't know anywhere else in Columbus I can get a similar experience. Side note, I don't know why but an old fukuryu sign is still up on the building outside.
The food was good. Well priced quality:cost ratio for a high end dining experience. Each piece was well thought out and the flavors combined spectacularly with the fresh cuts of fish. For a 16-piece meal at a $150 price point in the middle of Ohio, I think it’s pretty fair. Another review said this isn’t “traditional omakase” because it has a set menu that isn’t as fluid as it was in the past or at much more expensive restaurants. A ton of omakase now, especially at the $100-$200 price point all have a prix fixe menu that rotates regularly but not daily. I challenge someone to figure out the logistics of traditional omakase where you get a rotating array of fresh fish daily in the middle of Ohio and keep the price at $100-$150. You can’t, it’s impossible. I’d price a traditional omakase located in Columbus, OH to cost between $300-400 per person. Good service. Attentive, but not over bearing. Not much needed since the menu is prix fixe. The only thing I would want for is better timing between courses. The pacing felt a bit off. The dead space between courses was sometimes too long. We did the premium course which has 16 pieces of sushi/courses. We timed the meal around 2 hours from start to finish. I would ideally like an omakase of this size to hit around 1 hour 30 min time frame. This gives you a good 2 minutes per piece with about 5-10 minutes of discussion in between courses. It was a lot more like 20 minutes between each course which is a long time considering each piece is one bite.
Went here to celebrate a Birthday. Walking in, we were some of the first people there and our waitress, Sophia, was so sweet and explained our options. We were sat where we had a server, rather than the traditional omakase, but you can choose that option as well. It was very peaceful, through the 2nd course. Prior to the 3rd, suddenly our moist towels were snatched from our table and then another staff was refilling our drinks, it was a little awkward. Our waitress was so sweet and smiley, she still came back consistently, so it was weird to have others hovering around. Additionally, the other staff seemed cold in comparison and we questioned if they were wanting us to leave more quickly, but we weren’t even served our final courses… It had started to pick up a bit, but it wasn’t crowded by any means. We were fine to wait patiently, it had only been an hour since we arrived. We also liked to use the moist towels between courses, so it was odd they were taken before our meal had been served. I definitely preferred this over my prior omakase experience, the meal and pairings were exceptional. I will be back, hopefully with our same waitress and more of a positive energy from the surrounding staff.
This is not an authentic omakase. It’s just a fancy course sushi catered towards white people with overpowering sauce/garnishes that do not highlight the pure flavor of the fish but hides it. Omakase is meant to be a personal experience between you and the chef, while you sit directly in front of the sushi chef eat what the chef decides to make for that day. This place only has 6 seats in front of the sushi table so everyone else is just served sushi by their servers. They also choose and stick with a sushi menu for 6 weeks - that is not omakase. Also, we were still hungry after having the “5 course” with 9 pieces of sushi total so we picked up mexican food on our way home. Lastly, it took 40 minutes to bring out the matcha creme brûlée. When it came out, the sugar coating was burnt and very thick. I took one bite and could not finish the rest. If you’ve never done an authentic Omakase before and want fancy, higher quality sushi, don’t care about price, you’ll like it. With paring or other drinks and tip, I don’t believe this is worth a $300 dinner.
**Disappointing Omakase Experience at HARU Omakase** I recently visited [Restaurant Name], a Japanese restaurant offering an omakase-style dining experience, where the chef curates the menu. My partner and I opted for the premium tasting menu priced at $130 per person, which included six courses. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of expectations. The meal consisted of one salad, one dessert, and four sushi courses. Each sushi course featured three pieces, totaling twelve pieces of sushi. Regrettably, more than half of the sushi had fish that was noticeably not fresh. The unpleasant fishy odor and taste were hard to ignore, which is particularly disappointing for a Japanese restaurant that prides itself on serving raw fish. Freshness is the cornerstone of sushi, and this was a major letdown. While the restaurant had the aesthetic and form of a traditional Japanese dining experience, it lacked the essence—fresh, high-quality ingredients and meticulous preparation. For the price point, I expected much better. The lack of attention to such a critical detail as the freshness of the fish left me feeling frustrated and dissatisfied. Overall, I cannot recommend HARU Omakase to anyone seeking an authentic and high-quality Japanese omakase experience. There are far better options available for this price range.
We had the pleasure of going to Dozo in Dayton when Chef Yudi was there and we were excited to see what he was offering at Haru. The quality of sushi has unfortunately gone down hill and the price has gone up. Everything from the chosen cuts of fish, to the flavors and presentation are just not what I was expecting. We were also seated next to a family with an infant. For a $400 meal I was not happy to be seated next to a mother patting her infant on the back trying to burp him for 10 minutes. Save your money, go somewhere else.
