Had dinner last night and have to say… the meal was very good, everything that we expected as a first time diner was met. Living in Napa ( and dining in San Francisco) and experiencing quality food and service our expectations are high and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. the service was excellent as well, different staff continuously checked on us, everyone was extremely pleasant….and the place was completely filled ( read reviews re the noise, loud but you could certainly carry on a conversation)Overall I’m giving this place 2 👍 up…..PS the bottle of sake was excellent also….
An absolute new favorite. Everything on the menu tasted fresh and delicious and the atmosphere was very pleasant. The service was also supreme and everyone made us feel welcome and at home. Props to chef Matt for some AMAZING sushi dishes. Easily the best food I’ve had in my entire life! I am from CT but I know whenever I am in California I will make the trip to Hachi because it was an experience I will remember for the rest of my life. If I could give more than five stars I would <3
Hachi Izakaya was a tad loud, but I guess the restaurant cannot be faulted for that. Seating was western style. We brought a bottle of Kubota Manju, which they do not sell there. Their corkage fee was $30 which is normal. They did make up for the loud ambiance (some patrons were literally screaming) with their food. Hachi Izakaya has a special emphasis on charbroiled dishes as well as their sushi/sashimi which were both delightful. We had to wait a bit for the bill but after all the service was a good 4. This is the second time I went there and their food and service was consistently good both times. Not cheap but well worth it in my opinion.
This is the dinner spot I show my love ones to because this place is amazing!! It is best my all it means from the food, the service, the location, and the vibe. Located in Costa Mesa, the restaurant looks normal (not too big not too small) but has the best dishes in the area. It serves fresh Japanese Izakaya dishes with liquor, it is a good spot for a dinner after work to the weekend spot where you can drink. If you go in the weekend, make sure to reserve the table or you can easily wait in line up to 2 hours. I basically come here often and eat everything on the menu but the below are my favorites. Highlights of the menu: 1. Uni (sea urchin) Rolled with Raw Wagyu Beef with Sweet Soy Sauce and Caviar on top - the best! 2. Beef Tongue 3. Raw Oysters 4. Whole Squid 5. Sashimi - they offer Omakase too! 6. Charcoal Grill dishes 7. Pork Cheek 8. Motsu Nabe or Miso Motsu Nabe - the hotpot 9. Desserts: Honey Crème Brulee 10. Drinks: draft beers or sake Don't try the oyster shot. This is the only not good item on the menu. A little downturn is they don't accept reservation by phone or in Yelp and the parking lot is limited. Should get the complimentary Valet to save your time. There's additional parking lot for the restaurant but it's not very convenient.
Very accommodating host💎 Has good dine-in and take away service. 🚗 Authentic Japanese dining experience offered🥢 Great staff and great service👩🍳 Traditional Japanese menu affair🇯🇵 Mostly grilled items. 🍖🍡🍤🍣🍚 Japanese size proportions🗾 Clean well cared for location🧼🧹 Plenty of parking but it can get squeezy on weekends🅿️♿ Easy to find location🗺️📍 Great for date night families or a quick bite after work. 👷♀️👨👨👦👦💏 Great food well done and simple menu. 😍
Authentic Japanese food. Not necessarily sushi, though they do have a very small selection of sushi type items. This is primarily a hot small plates kind of place. Think of it as a Japanese take on a Spanish tapas restaurant. They have a daily fresh sheet referencing the various sashimi of the day, as well as various fresh beef items like beef tongue or Kobe beef carpaccio. The Hammachi nigiri was good. The shishito peppers and mushrooms was great. The homemade steamed chicken dumplings were amazing. The "pressed" salmon sushi was good but has too much rice since it's a compressed brick of rice. The sizzling hot plate of prime rib was good but not great. The chicken thigh skewers were great. The chicken meatball was average. The hot plate of Yakisoba noodle was good and loaded with all kinds of things like shrimp, chicken, cabbage, egg. The Kamameshi rice of the day is just ok. It takes at least 20 minutes to cook for some reason. It has an overall fishy flavor, in a fresh way not a bad way, but just a little too much for my liking. Cozy ambience.
great place to come sit eat drink. Variety of dishes prepared to order. Tried the oysters and beef tongue both were great. The oysters were fresh and they had four different options, the tongue was seasoned and seared all the way around creating a crust but keeping the center tender. will definitely return and recommend to friends and family.
This place is awesome: Best thing on the menu: - Pork cheeks - amazing Good: - gobo chips - wings - ribeye steak (would have been better at medium rare, slightly over cooked) - shishito pepper - asparagus and pork belly skewer Not my personal fav, but good: - beef tongue - snapper carpaccio - omelette Pass: - spicy salmon roll
The Best Bento Ever, and cooked to perfection! I wished I'd found this place sooner as soon as I saw this Bento to go. It came in a Large square bento-box (11-inch square - photo shown is for one person), everything was delicious. Steak, Pork, Shrimp Tempura were cooked to perfection, real crab meat and salmon roe and salmon on rice, oyster-katsu, egg, Karaage, octopus-seafood salad, potato salad, edamame, and Pickled radish. Next week, I will try their Omakase to go! ( Added photo of Omakase to go for two )
Stopped by Hachi while I was in town for a work conference and really enjoyed it. I had an early 6pm reservation so it wasn’t crowded when I arrived, but by the time I left the restaurant was clearly filling up. For dinner, I stuck with skewers. Went with the tsukune, negima, and pork belly. I also ordered the negitoro cut roll and salmon sashimi trio. Service was good throughout and I never felt like I was waiting on anything. Ended up becoming a fan of Hachi pretty quickly. A few days later, on my drive back to LA, I made a stop at the Torrance location and had an equally solid experience. Hachi is officially a new favorite of mine. Both the Costa Mesa and Torrance locations are great.
Visited this restaurant here with my family. We had reservation and seated smoothly when it came to the reservation time. All staffs were very friendly, helpful and well trained for service. All dishes were good. Especially we loved their skewers and Motsu Nabe (Japanese style hot pot). The chicken skewers were really the Japanese Yakitori. We were pretty happy and come back soon.
It's been a while since I've had Izakaya, and this place did not disappoint. My only wish was that the portion would be a little bigger. So if you want to be full, prepare to spend some $$. We ordered a lot of different varieties, and every dish were delicious. However, I think the beef tongue thick cut stood out the most. It's rare to get thick cut Japanese grilled tongue. I've had the best one in Sendai JP so that was my flavor reference point. This place came pretty close! The tongue was grilled to perfection and the texture was just right, soft and easy to bite with a slight crunch from the grilled outer layer. The premium sashimi was very delicious as well, but note you have to order 2 minimum (one piece of each fish/seafood in each order). Ours came with uni, toro, amaebi, salmon, hamachi, scallop, and sea bream. Because it's an Izakaya, the place gets pretty loud. Overall, I would highly recommend coming here if you want to try some thick cut beef tongue.
Great izakaya with a full menu of hits. Their sushi is high-quality fish and highly recommend either the tuna sashimi combo or the red snapper carpaccio. The pork shabu shabu was also really good, fresh vegetables, a great brother, and highly quality meat. Would reccomend making reservations as they were turning away anyone without reservations, fully booked restaurant on a Saturday night.
One of my most favorite Japanese restaurants. Very decent delicious food, beef intestine, pork hotpot and beef tongue are my must order dishes. But the changes hand pull noodle in hotpot set to regular yellow ramen this year, I loved the old style noodle way much more
The grilled beef tongue is the star tonight. Sweet shrimps are tasty but not special. I also like beef wrapped uni, my first time trying it and it was GOOD. The miso soup is not too bad but I don't think it is necessary for the meal. Mayo crispy shrimps are not recommended. Overall, we had a great time here. The staff are so nice and friendly! Will come back again! ❤
I believe that most of people in the US still don’t know Motsu Nabe which is an intestine hot pot and how tasty it is. If you have been to Japan, you would know that whenever you suddenly start wanting to eat something particularly, you can most likely find and get it. That impulse feeling happened to me yesterday as I really want to eat Motsu Nabe. I noticed that there are some restaurants provide it here in Orange County. I researched rating of each restaurant, review and distance then I decided to go to this Izakaya restaurant. Although I usually talk with restaurant’s people how they get food and how they cook etc, I just didn’t have a chance to talk this time. The first thing what I was impressed was raw oysters. I was just wondering where they got them. Ponze which soy sauce with vinegar which is one of the most popular ways to eat worked so much too me. It was delicious. Other dishes like gobo (root) sliced chips and Sashimi were great but I want to talk about the Motsu Nabe. Of course it was not as good as really good one in Japan but it had decent taste which I can be satisfied. They have soy sauce soup and spicy miso soup choices. They provide rice or ramen to put in the hot pot afterwards. Taste and quantity wise it’s worth to try. They also have Izakaya drink like sake, shochu and Chu-hi as well.
Make a reservation through phone in advance ~ All small plates, prepared fresh to order. My favs are the octopus salad, beef tongue and intestines. Highly rec the beef plates - meats are juicy and melt in your mouth, and the miso/umami flavor is strong! Octopus salad is a light and refreshing side. Despite it being busy, service was quick and attentive. We enjoyed the smaller portions so we could enjoy multiple plates.
It’s so funny the other reviewer complain the chief bear hand to make sushi. This is a real 🇯🇵 restaurant, good food, very high quality meat. And I want to tell you the Japanese restaurants, all beer, hands, and making sushi that’s their culture and that’s a professional treatment. Don’t write a bad review because you were stupid Oh, I tried a beef towel. It’s thick cut but very good cooking because I feel I’m kissing the tone when I’m eating it that’s disgusting but it’s real. Which means pretty good! And only if it’s a very good Japanese restaurant, then the Japanese gonna come to visit Food come there fast and good service too
4.5 stars. Loved most of it but some things. I got the wagyu and uni and it was amazing! For $27 you get three spoons of uni with wagyu beef and they were bombs of delicious flavor. The eel nigiri was serviceable. For the yakitori, the chicken meatball was so juicy and flavorful but the duck was dry, over cooked and under seasoned. I sat at the bar and I wished it was more like an izakaya where the chef could hand you food and give you recs. Instead, it’s almost closed off to the chef and you can’t see them work because it’s so high and also stacked high with dishes and other instruments. Service was awesome and quick, would definitely come back to try more things
Solid izakaya, albeit with a relatively limited menu. We loved everything we ordered. The sukiyaki on cold udon was a really pleasant surprise. They even crack a soft, runny egg on top at the table. Beautiful and delicious. The yakitori is solid. I'd highly recommend the chicken meatball. The service is fantastic. Everyone was extremely helpful and friendly. They also open late, till 11pm. Would highly recommend this wonderful spot!
We attended without a reservation, we were warmly welcomed and showed to our table. Service is friendly and prompt. The choice of food is extensive. Food is tasty and we ordered the beef sashimi which we enjoyed.
Savory, meaty glory in every bite and dishes they serve. I could easily spend over $100 here and order any of the beef, pork and chicken dishes. Make a reservation as sometimes the restaurant can have a long wait for walk ins. They have propane tank heaters and the staff is complaint with safety measures dining outside during covid. Ordered beef tongue, steak, omakase sashimi, chicken wings, pork cheek, intestines and uni & beef sashimi. The beef tongue is my favorite for the medium rare umami taste that melts in your mouth.

Great atmosphere to drink a pitcher or Sapporo while taking in some eats. Chefs are focused on their tasks and wait staff knew when to ask and when to leave us be.
The food here was even better today than the last few times I’ve come…the flavors are more delicate compared to other Izakaya in the area. Their dashi is nice and smoky, and there was a delicious pickled daikon with yuzu on special today that was *perfect*. I wish there was a little more of a range of sake by the glass- the pour was more expensive than other mazu offerings of that range of sake in the OC but I had a wonderful time nonetheless. The service was friendly and every dish was on point.
An izakaya with many excellent choices. The hot pot seemed popular, but we had sushi (sashimi and nigiri) along with croquettes and the grilled chicken skewers. Service was excellent.

Fantastic service and really good food. I got the beef tongue, which was highly recommended, and it was even better than I expected it to be. The outside was nicely seared with a flavorful crust while the inside was still juicy and tender. The little root salad on the side was a nice accompaniment. As for the sake uni and squid sashimi, it was alright. The squid was actually pretty good, but the uni wasn't sweet at all and even had a slight bitter taste to it. I will be coming back next time to try the other items on their menu!
A good izakaya in the O.C. I have been their Torrance location few tkmes. And this was my first visit at Costa Mesa location. The interior is brand new and clean. I mean Torrance location was made from bought out the previous reataurant. We went in a weekend night, and it was busy but not like Torrance one. After we sat, it took a while for them to take our drink order. Once somebody came we ordered many items at once because I felt they don't come back for a while hahaha. Unexpectedly the food came really quickly. I was bit surprised. All the foods we're good. Their famous fried gobo chips were a bit cold. I suspected they fried a bunch beforehand and served one by one... It is bit funny that the food was good but the food and the restaurant were not memorable. Somehow they don't stand out in my mind... I would say that the grandfather kappo Honda definitely has a character which people remember. I am just saying..
Went there last night with my friends and the food was delicious! I’m giving 4 stars because the party that was sitting behind us was bit noisy and we couldn’t really hear each other.
We came here for dinner as it was close to the hotel. The menu is extensive, with cold dish ,grilled items , sushi, and hot noodle soups or hot pot ( Nabe ) . The salmon skin roll I ordered was delicious, and the chicken meat ball skewers were also testy . It is a very suitable place to relax and have a meal. * This is a chain restaurant
The food here is great. The atmosphere is lively and good for just casual dining or small group gatherings. The service is overall good except for one lady server with short hair! We asked her for one picture and she said "I'm too busy"! So we spend over $500 in bills but she's too busy for us for 1 picture? It would have taken 10 seconds off her precious time! Anyhow, overall, we still had a good time!
Very good food. The beef tongue was our favorite. It has a very thick cut and is tender as well as very well seasoned. The oysters, salmon and eel sushi, we ordered, were very fresh. The uni & beef sashimi was alright. The taste of the soy sauce was a little bit too strong and the uni did not taste sweet. The pressed salmon sushi was only okay since it has too much rice in comparison to the salmon. Overall, the food, particularly the beef tongue is very delicious. Will definitely return.

I've never felt so old, or maybe it was the seat I was in, but I couldn't hear my table conversation, nor the servers well. The BGM wasn't particularly loud, and it wasn't a packed house, but I had a hard time fully enjoying my stay due to the overwhelming noise. Wait staff is friendly but could have used more frequent check-ins. My wife, Japanese, wanted to come on recommendation from some Japanese friends. We left underwhelmed. The oysters were very fresh. kids had udon and chirashi-Don, these were fine. We also had motsu nabe, unagi roll, these were fine. I tried the home-made fish cake which I really enjoyed. Overall the food is good, but I didn't find anything to bring me back rather than hit the Mitsuwa food court next time we are in the area.
Good clean restaurant. Most of server is nice and attentive except for one with a bad attitude. However food portion is REALLY SMALL. Assorted Sashimi were $25 for 5 pieces which is insane compare to any other Japanese restaurants. We spent $50 each and felt left with an almost empty belly.
Food was pretty good, the Japanese server took care of us was very rude she pretty much just threw the dishes to our table and walked away didn't like to give us a second to catch her attention to order more things, brought wrong item to us, when I told her that's not what I ordered she just didn't say anything with a blank face no apology of course. Again, food was good.
A tad bit overpriced for the options that are available for small grilled meats. The normal priced chicken dishes are about $3 while pork and beef can be from $10 to $17. This seems a bit too high for small grilled appetizers. I've been to a few izakayas that have equal amount of flavor, taste and quality with items ranging from $3 to $6. The menu is also very small, so choices are limited in meat options. Overall, I would probably have only ordered the chicken meatballs and thighs which had great flavor
I tried Izakaya Hachi a couple nights ago.. The atmosphere was very nice. The table areas were clean and set very nicely. The staff was pleasant but it was hard to figure out who was waiting which areas and who to contact if you needed something. I ordered a seared tuna dish that was very tasty. However, I was surprised to see the main sushi chef working with teh raw fish and raw meat his bear hands, then touching the refrigerator handle, wiping things off the counter to and then handling the raw ingredients again. The portions were VERY small for the price. I ordered an additional roll which was tasty but very small. He scooped the rice with his bear hands and handled the raw fish again. It seemed like a high-end Japanese want-to-be. I probably will not be back. Hope this is constructive so you can make appropriate changes. Good luck.

Food is atrocious, I made the mistake of coming in here because there seemed to be a lot of customers. Never again.
Food all came out lukewarm. It’s so blatantly obvious the food was premade and just reheated before serving (wasn’t even reheated well……) they actually have quite a number of chefs, which is confusing because who’s doing the cooking lmao
