Opinions de Port of Leith Distillery Edinburgh
Fantastic tour! First whisky tour and it didn’t disappoint! Worth the money too. What they’ve achieved to get where the company is now is incredible! Great future ahead. Can’t wait to try the first Cask Whisky in the future. Highly recommend buying their Blended Whisky ! And their Port!
Took the tour today with Simon, and it was really interesting. He talked us through the companies philosophy and it was clear he, and the team, believe in what they do. Great experience.
Three brothers on a whisky weekend. This is a unique distillery tour. Well worth it. The staff looked after us really well. Adeline seems to have been there from the very inception and therefore had a great insight to the story. It’s new, so the whisky isn’t great, but it is clear there is a future planned out.
Great tour. My group was the largest of the day but Olivia was a great guide and kept us all comfortable and laughing, answering all of the questions we had. Great time.
Really good tour at Port of Lieth distillery and a great way to learn about how whisky is created. We took the 90 minute tour and tasting. This was well worth it. Thank you to Frasier our tour guide who brought everything to life. One big bonus are the views, breath taking!
i’ve been back in the states for nearly 2 weeks now and can safely say that the tour guide and bartenders were an absolute highlight of our trip to edinburgh. we learned so much on the tour, and had a blast at the bar with the genuine, interesting staff afterwards. highly recommend.
The Port of Leith Distillery is located right next to the Royal Yacht Britannia in Leith – easily reachable from central Edinburgh in about 20 minutes by tram from Princes Street. What makes this distillery stand out is its unusual vertical layout. Unlike traditional distilleries, the production process is arranged across several floors of a modern, purpose-built structure. The washbacks are integrated directly into the steel frame of the building – pretty stunnimg. The tour begins on the top floor and guides visitors step by step through the levels of production. Though they haven’t released their own whisky yet, the distillery is already experimenting with different yeast strains, fermentation times and temperatures – it will be interesting to see what their whisky will taste like once it's marketable. During the tasting following the guided tour, visitors sample the New Make Spirit and fortified wines from their Spanish partner bodega, whose casks will one day be used for maturation. The visit is best rounded off by the bar on the top floor with views over Leith Harbour. The whisky list is extensive and carefully curated – in fact, more impressive than some well-known whisky bars in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Add to that modern, well-prepared food, and it’s a place worth visiting in its own right – even without a full dram of their own just yet.
This was a last minute addition to our trip but I am so glad that we found it. The facility is absolutely incredible and so interesting to see. The tour was perfect, not too long, and the tasting after was really fun and informative. So cool that two people with a shared interest in spirits could build such a unique place. Dinner in the restaurant after was lovey and has a beautiful view.
Very interesting vertical distillery. The tour guide was very kind. The only issue is that they don’t offer their own whiskey for tasting yet. You will have to come back in a couple years. The bar at the top is really nice and prices for whiskey flights are decent.
Visited here 11am on a Tuesday morning. Went to the 8th floor bar, fantastic views. Decided to have a small whisky tasting. Bartender was very knowledgeable, took time to assess what would suit me best, then I had a 4 whisky tasting! I followed this with lunch at 12, gnocchi in a lovely herby sauce, served by a friendly waiter. No pressure at any time, despite being a woman on my own, I felt very comfortable. Stayed about 2hrs & thoroughly enjoyed myself.
What a place... Stunning views, great food, even better whisky. The bar is on the top floor of the distillery. It has an industrial, but cosy vibe to it. There is no outdoor seating, but huge floor to ceiling windows. I ate finger foods. They were top notch. They have a bible sized drinks menu with lots of coctails and other drinks, not just whisky. I tried multiple tasting flights and the house champagne as well. They were all exceptional. The staff was very friendly and attentive.
It’s been a moment since arriving back to the US, but I wanted to express deep gratitude for what may be the best drink of Scotch Whisky I’ve ever had. Sadly, I only brought home one bottle of the 8-year. You all have completely outdone yourselves. This is absolutely delicious.
Had a grand time here, guide was very knowledgable and this compliments a more „traditional“ tour nicely
We went on a 1.5 hour tour with my friends. The tour was very informative and we learned a lot. Leo was a great guide! The tasting at the end was also really well organized. All in all, I found the tour an excellent choice and would recommend it! The distillery is new, so this was a great way to see modern distillery facilities in nice surroundings by the shore.
A MUST VISIT DISTILLERY IF YOU ARE IN EDINBURGH (Affirmative advertising) The bar is great the food the people and visitors center everything is perfect.
Highly recommend the tour! Very knowledgeable and the tasting is enlightening. Olivia was great!
I came here with two people who aren't into whiskey, so we passed on the distillery tour and just went straight to the bar. Mostly cos we were looking for a nice place for a real cocktail and good whiskies in Leith. After previously trying some very local whiskies at a nearby pub, I was in the mood to up my game a little and this place does not disappoint. Their whisky selection is out of this world. The menu is insane. It's a like a catalogue, a library even. While I had wanted to try their own brand offerings, they only opening less than a year ago, so that wasn't on the cards. I did try their "From The Vaults" tasting flight which featured indie drams from Edinburgh's Scotch Malt Whisky Society. It was quite an experience, and while all were good and unique in their own ways, I really loved 2 of the 4. My friends ordered signature cocktails and really enjoyed those, too. I tried the Kingfisher. Great flavours, but it didn't need the foam. If anything, the siphoned foam was a huge distraction from the excellent profile and balance of the cocktail itself. We all agreed it would be better without it. But points for trying. The venue itself is bright and clean and spacious. Clean and modern with nice views of the harbour. The bar is stacked with bottles of whisky from all over the world and I can't imagine anybody coming here and being disappointed in the variety and selection. Service was good enough at the bar. Not super attentive, and they didn't engage much, so I think when people are genuinely interested in flights and cocktails, a little bit of personal attention from the bar staff is helpful for letting them know what they're drinking and ordering. The hostess was awesome. We ended up staying for more than just one drink like we had planned because it was so unpretentious for such a fancy whisky spot, and the drinks were excellent quality. And if it can make 2 non-whiskey-drinkers happy, it must be doing something right. I would totally recommend this spot for all your whiskey needs in Leith, if you want a different atmosphere than a pub or freehouse.
Pre booked a tour and we were actually the only pair on it so got a private tour & tasting! Great tour. Make sure to book the restaurant/bar for afterwards, amazing food and drinks with a view.
Whiskey lover? Then this place is a MUST! Absolutely beautiful location with an incredible view and a huge selection of whiskeys from all over the world. You have the option of selecting a few to sample on a flyer or for those of us who still haven't gotten a taste for drinking it neat, they do a cocktail selection too (trust me, they're belnded to perfection). Staff are exceptionally friendly, helpful and clearly passionate about the trade. The lite bites also provide a lovely compliment to the night as well. Overall, a fantastic experience and we would be delighted to go again
A great addition to the Leith skyline - a vertical distillery! Our tour guide Leo was a great host, full of knowledge and a clear passion for the project. The tour provided a good grounding to the whisky making process, incorporating the interesting architectural process that went into the building. There was a tasting, of course, which also provided a timeline to the company from inception to opening. Needless to say the views were stunning. The bar was very reasonably priced and the small plates menu was inticing and delicious. Clearly a lot has been invested in staff training. A short tram journey from the city centre, it's definitely a tour worth doing
We had a wonderful tour of this very different distillery, hosted by Ellie who was fantastic at telling the fascinating story of how the distillery came into existance and how it works. It's a great building too, and the tasting was the most informative I've had (this was our third distillery tour). Leith Distillery is all about what young entrepreneurs can do to break into a very traditional industry - and is a great story! And by the way, the views are great too:))
Exceptional tour — our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and walked us through a real, working distillery (in fact, the tallest vertical distillery in the world). The tasting was generous and varied, and the bar at the top floor was excellent. Highly recommended as an authentic distillery experience just 15m from city center. Absolutely worth the uber. Thanks Rocky!
Lovely tour by Simon. Amazing vertical construction right beside the Ocean Terminal and Royal Yacht. Absolutely recommend the full flight as we enjoyed different products. Great rooftop bar as well. Thank youbso much for the experience and a happy new year to everyone at Port of Leith Distillery.
We ate here twice but I forgot to take pics the first time. The burger, scallops, pie, sticky toffee pudding, bread, and focaccia were all amazing. As were the cocktails and the flights. Very cool building - good tour if you have the time. Good views of the water.
Really interesting vertical distillary! Worth a visit if just for the shop, bar and great views including The Royal Yacth. Visited on a afternoon exploring Leith waterfront area. A visit if you are in Edinburgh is highly recommended.
Beautiful location for an up-and-coming Edinburgh distillery. If you don’t have time for a full tour, consider ordering a whisky flight at their 8th floor bar. Had a great tasting experience with J.D.!
A fantastic experience of different whiskeys at the tasting session and the tour overall was excellent with some great insights to the process. Rocky (our tour guide) was fantastic, explained eloquently the entire 90 mins. As it's within the Edinburgh town itself, it's easy to get to the location by tram.
We booked a table here for drinks an hour before we were lucky enough to be going to a private dinner on the Royal Yacht Britannia. The bar is on the 8th floor and we were so lucky to be given a table right in the floor-to-ceiling window on the right side of the building - it was like we were sitting on top of the Royal Yacht, amazing! The bar has a lovely atmosphere and the staff are incredibly helpful and looked after us so well. We had a couple of drinks (2 G&Ts and 2 proseccos) and a bowl of crisps to nibble on. Cost was around £30. If we had been in Edinburgh for longer, and not saving ourselves for the Royal Yacht evening, we would have booked to do the distillery tour. The place has only been open a few years and is therefore very modern and new. One thing to note for anyone doing similar - even though it looks like you can on a map, you cannot walk directly to the Royal Yacht from the distillery - you have to go back down to the road and walk around Ocean Terminal. If we are ever in Edinburgh again, I will definitely pay another visit and this time sample some of the delicious looking bar food that we saw going past. Thank you to the staff for a great experience.
Thoroughly enjoyed our tour, it was wonderful to hear the story of the company, very informative with great humour, our guide was great! Really look forward to seeing the company grow and come back in a few years for the first single malt!
Very nice staff in both the bar and in the distillery tour/shop. The burger was pretty good too. They don't have their whisky ready yet but you can taste their new spirit. Recommended.
Great service and views are fantastic! We had such nice weather and was perfect for sunset light. The tour: They are very new in the whisky production so if you desire to have nothing but whisky tasting, this may not be for you. BUT if you enjoy the experience of waly through the production making and great views and service, DO IT! we got to taste some of their partners wines and products which were fantastic. Our tour guide Angus was very kind and not boring. The Bar: Fantastic. We didn't have a reservation which I recommend you do. They brought us something we didn't order ( mistakes happen all the time ) so it took a bit longer for our actual meal to come but they offered us some dips and chips, very kind ! Everyone was really friendly and food was delicious! Totally recommend it!
Thank goodness, I was there... something very promising is happening here :) Leo was an exceptional tour guide, and the tour was informative and witty too. The company is producing a lot of beautiful drinks, so there is a lot to taste, even though it is too early for whisky (from the distillery) itself. Maybe, just the focus on "official" tasting notes was quite like a school test... The architecture is pure and industrial-styled, but fascinating. And yes, amazing views indeed! Great job and fingers crossed!
Amazing bar and restaurant. Great food and fantastic views. Limited, but good, menu, but extensive drinks menu. We had a cocktail which was 1 part their table whisky and 4 parts their own PX sherry (I am a PX sherry fan, and theirs is really tasty and smooth). Superb! Staff were great and we had an excellent evening, and did I mention the views!
Really well done cocktails with their own liquors and other local Edinburgh liquors! And the views were spectacular. We didn't get any food, but seeing what other around us got it looked tasty
What a great place. Brilliant distillery tour and tasting with the excellent Rocky, followed by seriously classy cocktails served by charming, knowledgeable staff in the 8th floor bar. Don't miss this
Excellent experience. Superb food, drink, atmosphere. Also enjoyed a tour of the distillery. Excellent views. We came before the rugby and thoroughly enjoyed the match day experience package. Highly recommended. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It’s such an exciting time to visit Port of Leith distillery! My sister and I did the distillery tour & tasting, and it was different than any other tour I’ve been on. I learned SO much about the whisky making process, and it helps that we had Leo as our guide. Despite the howling winds we could hear from inside the building, Leo was engaging, knowledgeable, and so kind. The guys who started Port of Leith have an awesome story, and I can’t wait for the release of their single malt in the coming years — I’ll be keeping an eye out! The same brand owns Lind & Lime distillery, and because of my tremendously positive experience, I’m for sure checking out their facility next time I’m in Edinburgh. Cheers to Port of Leith Distillery for putting together a great product and an awesome team!
Excellent, informative tour and tasting session led by Olivia. Lovely bar/restaurant on the top floor with views over the water to Fife and excellent range of whisky. Did not have food but did have some breads and focaccia which was excellent. Small gift shop. Extra marks for inclusive bathroom facilities (JKR wouldn't like it here - which many might say is yet another reason to come).
I visited the Port of Leith Distillery Bar last weekend and had an amazing time :) . The bar is so stylish, with incredible views that really make the experience feel special. The cocktails were amazing and clearly made with care. I asked for a specific cocktail that I wanted to be very smooth and mild, and I genuinely felt listened to. I was attended by JD, that took the time to understand exactly what I was after and tailored the drink perfectly to my taste, which is difficult to find when you don't want strong drinks but still wants to enjoy a cocktail from time to time. They also served amazing mocktails too! The service and attention to detail really elevated the whole experience. I’d highly recommend a visit, whether you’re into whisky, cocktails, or just looking for a great spot to spend an evening. Perfect to bring friends and family so they can enjoy the views with a drink!
I'm not into whisky but I found this tour really enjoyable and informative. The building is very modern and the distillery is young, so if you're looking for a very traditional tour this may not be for you. From the city centre you can get on the tram to the Ocean Terminal, and it's a 5 mins walk from there. The building is great with amazing views across the port from all levels. We did the Weekday Tour & Tasting. Isobel was a great guide, happy to answer questions and patient when we were taking pictures. I would definitely recommend, it can fit into a busy schedule and was great value for money.
We took the tour with a very nice guide and had the tasting, which was fun. I had to reschedule the tour for the following day at a different time shortly before the appointment and they were kind enough to acommodate us without a problem. I took the chance to sit at the bar that evening and went back the following day after the tour with my companion. JD was the barman who made me feel really looked after on that first evening. Good cocktail and awesome whisky following his recommendation. The second time at the bar the waitress from Barcelona was super nice, and changed us from the bar to a table by the window with stunning views. Food was tasty and nicely presented. Lovely rich sticky toffee pudding. We enjoyed the stylish, cosy atmosphere of the bar and how professional everybody was.
Brilliant, modern tour – one of the best I’ve done. The guide (French, I think?) was funny, sharp, and genuinely engaging. The bar? Mixed. Service felt frosty, though food came fast. The smoked haddock Scotch egg and mackerel pâté were solid. Lind & Lime sorbet stole the show – zesty and unforgettable. But the croquettes lacked flavour, the focaccia wasn’t fresh, and the “whisky” sauce forgot the whisky. Still well worth visiting – just hope the bar catches up with the spirit of the tour.
Very interesting whiskey tour with Leo. Professional tour guide. Although bar staff very rude so we decide to leave and spend money somewhere else.
Really nice new distillery with a great tour, some interesting tastings and hopefully a bright future. The distillery has yet to produce an aged whisky so there are some early expressions of what they are using and the cask types. It's all very interesting as is the distillery itself being vertical in nature. Word of warning if you don't like heights it might be a bit tricky as the open planned tour is not for sufferers of vertigo. The restaurant and bar on the top floor are also a delight so definitely a reason to return again down the road when their first batch is ready. In the meantime grab yourself a bottle of their blended "table whisky" and check out the views of the docks and the Yacht Britannia below.
A proper distillery right in Edinburgh, without the need to travel far. While I’ve sampled several of their own whiskies, I find myself more drawn to their extensive selection of non-house labels. The views are simply breathtaking, and the industrial-style interior evokes the feel of being in the States. The food is fairly average—think a typical pub menu with a slight twist—but it does the job. Overall, it’s a spot I enjoy visiting midweek for a cocktail and a bite, with the atmosphere making it worth the return.
The tallest vertical distillery in the world?! Maybe yes, but it definitely is the distillery with a view. Spectacular view of the Firth of Forth, Port area with its main attraction Royal Yacht Britannia. Introduction into whisky making process is informative and inciting. Tasting experience of the tour is the most exciting part of it. Very inviting indeed. Enjoy yourself and the view!!!
A quite unique distillery. The tour was interesting and our guide Ellie was engaging and informative. Since they are yet to produce their first finished batch of matured single malt, the tasting was unusual but generous.
A sleek, modern vertical distillery set by the waterfront with sweeping views over the port. The guided tour is informative yet casual you’ll get insights into their whisky-making process, the architectural concept, and how they’re reinventing Scotch for a new generation. Great rooftop bar for a dram with a view. Pre-booking recommended ticket 🎫 🎟️
This unique enterprise towers over the Port of Leith, an area in continual flux with new build housing blocks and ocean terminal’s metamorphosis unfolding all around. Groups of tourists, a long way from the bustling streets of old town, nonetheless make the pilgrimage to this largely ignored corner of the city. But taking the lift to the 8th floor, the pay-off of is immediate, with incredible views over Edinburgh, Leith, the port of, and the Firth of Forth. Simply put, these are some of the best views in the city, no climb of Arthur’s Seat required. The staff were friendly & attentive, a little rushed, but overall looked after us well, initially serving up cocktails from the drinks menu filled with options from the classic to unusual, showcasing the distillery’s initial whisky options plus Lind & Lime gin, manzanilla sherry, white port and more. The bar is clearly proud of their wares, with their creativity and breadth of offerings means there’s something for everyone, whisky lovers or not. With such a setting and drinks offerings, the food could have, but needn’t have been groundbreaking. At minimum it needed to be serviceable enough to complement the drinks, showcase some of the many amazing ingredients Scotland has to offer, job done. But sadly the views and drinks were undermined the machinations of an unimaginative, heavy handed & bored chef, catering to the lowest common denominator; taking the easy path, and not even doing it well. If it really was August, you would struggle to tell from the menu, but it was initially promising, with a small selection of snacks, smaller & larger plates showcasing some Scottish ingredients. But what arrived promptly after ordering was far from what I’d hoped. Smoked mackerel pate was dry, bland, served in too-large a dish with shop-bought oat cakes thrown alongside. The chicken liver parfait was unappetising, served in tartlets of differing sizes, colours & shapes, with something allegedly containing strawberry (?) deposited on top. Burrata and (underripe) Isle of Wight tomatoes was drowning in basil oil, spoiling what potentially could have been a barnstormer of a summer classic. Haggis bonbons were crispy but one dimensional with a whisky cream sauce that sadly was watery, tepid and completely lacking in any flavours resembling its tentpole ingredient. A side portion of chips were seasoned well but undercooked and bordering on soggy. The biggest disappointment however was saved for the smoked mackerel scotch egg, a carpet of capers & chives mysteriously vomited atop, and perched atop a bed of something resembling cream cheese and everything bagel seasoning. It was confused, lacking texture or identity. All the food arrived on logo-branded plates whilst we sat at logo-branded tables, lest we forget for a second who was responsible for this experience. We ate what was brought, hungry and keen to avoid any fuss, and just pay and leave, having only booked to take my visiting mother in law, who was keen to make the trip there. She enjoyed her evening, and that was what mattered most to us. But I can’t in good conscience recommend the food here. Come for the views, a tour & tasting, enjoy a cocktail or whisky flight in the bar (of which there are many appealing options to choose), but please please please avoid the food. Leith has some of the best restaurants in the city, you can see them from the windows, but you won’t find one of them here.
The tour wasn’t impressive. The guide was amazing and knowledgeable. However, this is just a distillery meaning tha the alcohol is just distilled here. All the other major processes are done at different places. It is a small distillery and when we went in there, nothing was being done meaning you just see huge tanks not in use. Maybe they don’t work all 7 days of the week but it was disappointing. The whiskey tasting itself is bad too. Being a new distillery they do not have their own scotch whiskey ready yet. They make you taste 2 new makes (produced by them), sherry, port, and a whiskey all not produced by their distillery. It wasn’t what I was expecting. I would suggest going to some countryside distillery to get a more traditional tour. Even though modern distilleries are state of the art and mechanised it’s good to learn how it was traditionally done. I believe this place jumped into tours and stuff to quickly. They should have set themselves first waited for 3-5 years and then started tours. Nobody wants to learn from someone who has bot even started actual sales/ business and just been there for 2 years now. I would prefer learning from someone who has been doing this since a decade or too.
