Opinions de Journey to the Dumpling Elk Grove
It’s been a while since I had some quality Chinese food and Journey to the Dumpling lived up to the hype. The dishes we ordered included Green Beans in garlic sauce, Siu Mai, Honey Walnut Shrimp, Chicken and Cilantro Soup Dumplings, and Steak and Potatoes. Each dish was excellent. The shrimp had a crispy exterior and sweet coating that wasn’t too sweet. The Steak and Potatoes were excellent since the steak was very tender and the black bean sauce and chilis added great flavor. A heads up: the soup dumplings have…soup in them. If you bite into them, they will leak soup. Do not attempt big bites otherwise you will squirt soup out. While I would have enjoyed trying more food, my stomach and the person footing the bill would have definitely protested. Also, I found the service to be great. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. She did a good job. If I’m ever in the area again, I would definitely want to head to Journey of the Dumpling again.
A true destination for dumpling lovers. Journey to the Dumpling lives up to its name in every way. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the travel-inspired energy—almost Silk Road–like—with a sense that this place is about craftsmanship, culture, and intention, not just food. We started with the crab and pork xiao long bao, and they were outstanding. The broth was rich and silky, the wrapper delicate, and what really set the experience apart was that our server took the time to give our table a quick tutorial on how to properly enjoy them—how to lift, dip, and savor without losing the broth. That small moment elevated the entire meal and showed how much pride they take in the experience. The pan-fried pork buns were crispy on the bottom, juicy inside, and generously filled. The shu mai—with pork, shrimp, mushrooms, and egg roe on top—was absolutely lavish, both in flavor and presentation. The wontons in chili oil, topped with peanuts and green onions, struck that perfect balance of heat, richness, and texture. The garlic green beans were simple but executed perfectly, and the bao (both pork and mushroom) were soft, flavorful, and beautifully done—the mushroom bao even looked like a mushroom, which was a fun touch. We finished with egg tarts, which were light, flaky, and the perfect sweet ending. Seeing the awards on the wall and knowing they’ve expanded into Midtown Sacramento—with another location on the way—makes complete sense after eating here. This is a restaurant built on passion, technique, and consistency. If you’re anywhere near Elk Grove—or even making the drive—Journey to the Dumpling is absolutely worth it. One of the best dumpling experiences in the region.
We love their vegetarian options. The vegetarian dumplings are so delicious! They also have a really nice chili oil they make in-house.
We love April!! She did an amazing job, especially with my husband’s sesame allergy. My husband can usually only eat one or two plates at a dumpling house but April was diligent and worked with the kitchen to provide us quite a few options he could eat
Sooooo so GOOD!! I’ve tried many dumpling spots, because i’m quite literally obsessed with them! 😭 Journey to the dumpling is on the top of my list in regards to flavor and service. The atmosphere is also very calming, can’t complain at all! The staff are very attentive you don’t have to ask for much they’ll help you before you do! We ordered the pork soup dumplings, pan fried dumplings, wontons in chili oil(personal favorite) fried rice and cucumber salad. As well as potstickers but that was the only dish I feel lacked flavor. Other than that I recommend them so much! Please try their chili oil also, very flavorful! You can also buy some to take home! Happy eating y’all!:)
Food: the dishes are amazingly good! Everything goes well with their chili oil and vinegar! This time we’re only a party of two, and the portion is good enough to fill our late lunch after a road trip. The Xiao Long Bao is very juicy and fresh, a must try! Service: shout out to our server Henry. He is very nice and he also packed us the chili oil and vinegar with our to go box. The time we came in is very close to their end of business hour but the staff are very warm and welcoming! Ambiance: casual place for family and friends.
Have been here many times and the food quality still top notch compared to a lot of similar restaurants even in Bay Area, average $12-15/ dish very competitive price, recommend beef rolls, stuffed meat bun and steam buns. Hot oil wanton today did not have enough red oil however the servant today is very nice.
Had the pleasure of going to this spot as my birthday dinner the food and service was top tier. We came right in the middle of lunch and were sat with in ten minutes which is great. Our server walked is through what the best items in the menue were and recommended a delicious grapefruit beer imported from Taiwan. All of the dumplings we got were absolutely amazing. Are favorites would have to be the beef soup and pork and chive. The salt and pepper calamari was soft and flavorerful as was the chicken. I would certainly make the trip out from San Jose again just to eat at this establishment.
So so good! There was a 30 minute wait on a Wednesday night, so highly recommend adding yourself to the waitlist ahead of time. Food was definitely worth it, the garlic noodles are the best we’ve ever had. The food came out really quick even though the restaurant was packed, and everyone was nice and attentive.
Journey to the Dumpling was such a great experience. The dumplings were fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked, with a good variety to choose from. Everything tasted homemade and comforting. The service was friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. Definitely a spot worth coming back to for delicious dumplings and a satisfying meal. 🥟✨
Vibe of restaurant during an evening dinner rush was very overwhelming. This was my least favorite part of the experience. The tables are arranged very closely to another and it felt chaotic. Servers and staff were all very friendly. Nothing felt overly spicy so easy to add sauces for a custom spice level. *Food Reviews* Garlic noodles: 5/5 Strong garlic taste Peking Spare Ribs: 3/5 HAS BONES!! Sweet sauce is tasty. Menu doesn’t say there are bones so definitely a hazard! Chow Mein: 4/5 tasty and not oily. Thinner noodles Vegetarian Salt & Pepper Tofu: 5/5 STAR OF THE NIGHT! So tasty but super hot when it comes out give it a few mins so it firms up lol Pork Soup Dumplings: 2/5 Unfortunately they came undone super easy and leaked a pink semi solid goop (pork) which was not appetizing to look at so we ended up not eating them. They looked better the following day as leftovers Cucumber Salad: 4/5 tasty and simple Wonton in Chili Oil: 5/5 Perfect bite sized wontons with a flavorful sauce BBQ pork: 3/5 We weren’t really fans of this the bbq flavor is very subtle and the meat was a little tougher than we would have liked
Soooo delicious 😋 we left early as it takes about 1hr. Drive time and made it there just b4 Lunch. 1st time, we ordered the crunchy Bao buns, followed by Korean Style noodles. They have great Thai tea as well... Great service as it got bust. They were very polite, friendly and most of all Attentive.
Here are the foods that I got at Journey to the Dumpling in Elk Grove! The first thing I got were the pork soup dumplings, and I have heard people compare them to other places such as Din Tai Fung’s, so I was really excited to try them out! They were big and almost couldn’t fit into my soup spoon, and I do have to admit that they do taste a little similar to DTF, they’re not exactly on the same level’s to DTF‘s since the dumpling kept falling apart and was a little messy, but they were still delicious. I would say that the closeness and similarity and taste would be may be like a 9 out of 10. I think personally I would prefer DTF’s, but if I was in the Sacramento area and I REALLY was craving some good quality soup dumplings without driving too much, then I think these soup dumplings would still hit the spot. Next, we got mushroom dumplings, I think? They did have a weird brown outside covering, which I was a little scared about, but it wasn’t too bad! For the inside, it did come with some mushrooms, but it wasn’t anything too special. I wouldn’t probably get these again, but they were still okayyy, like they weren’t a dish that was inedible and super bad. Lastly, we got the leaf wrapped dish that came with some rice that tasted pretty sweet and came with the chicken inside. It was pretty good and I don’t think it was a total waste of our money, but I wouldn’t probably get this dish again due to the price. Like the mushroom dumplings, it was okay and edible, but it wasn’t anything to mind blowning or special. The shop was pretty popular and busy!
This place is always packed, and food is good and fresh. My mom wanted to go eat here again. She loves the food. We always order wat more than we can eat because it's so good. Today, we ordered a few things we had never had, and it was ok. We will probably not order that again. It fell short of flavor for us.
** Wait: Too long - even after you are on the waitlist and check in, the wait was 45-55 mins on a Sunday evening at 7:30p. **** Service: the wait staff were all very nice *** Quite loud inside although you do have TVs with no sound showing the local sports games like the Kings if it’s a game night. *** Food: underwhelming and quite overrated — but lots of pictures of all the menu items + lots of vegetarian options — they plaster the NO MSG sign on the menus. - Mushroom Bao: bland flavors, and they don’t have the black mushrooms inside. It’s just plain not so tasty mushroom inside, but presentation is CUTE!!! - Tan Tan Mian - noodles were good amount of chewy but minced flavors of the pork were just OK and this is served as a SOUP fyi. - Vegetable Chow Mein - decent flavors - Cucumber Salad was prob the tastiest of all - Green onion pancakes - soy sauce/vinegar mix was missing flavors along with the pancake itself Overall, I think that for the long wait, the food isn’t worth it if you’re NOT a vegetarian. For vegetarians, there’s plenty of options but this would not be my go-to-place for Chinese food.
Just did an Uber eats for over $100 of dim sum and they couldn't take the time to add chilli oil to the order. We added a request. The last time we ordered I called to ask if we had to buy it separately and the very nice man on the phone said to just add a note on the order. Last time we got plenty of chilli oil. This time they didn't send any AT ALL. I'm really bummed out, it's good food but it's not nearly the same without the chilli oil. :(((((((
