Opinions de Mario's Ristorante Galveston
The best meal I've had in about 2 years. I knew I had to be in the right place when I had to wait in line. The bluefin tuna was to die for. The squid salad was Smokey and Rich. I haven't had my plumb wine since my mom. The sake was a little tart. Both the staff and customer clientele were kind. The place was wonderful and cozy and had a wholesome feeling. This is the kind of place I'll think about in 10 years from now.
Amazing service, our server was attentive and prompt with everything, very kind and awesome. The chef was hysterical and engaging the entire time, and the food was wonderful. Best meal of our trip.
We ended up at Yamato on Galveston Island on the one-year anniversary of losing my son, AJ — and in the way I see the world, that timing matters. The last time we did hibachi with these same cousins was in Kemah in 2023, when AJ was still with us. So finding Yamato on the island on this exact date felt like a sign we chose the right place to be. What made it hit even deeper is the calendar shift happening right now — the end of the Snake year and the start of the Horse with Lunar New Year beginning. In many Asian traditions, timing and symbols carry meaning. For me, this felt like a closing and a new beginning in the same breath — a reminder that AJ is still with us on this journey. I didn’t plan any of it, which is part of why it felt so meant-to-be. My cousin’s son is old enough now to do the research and help decide where we go, and somehow it all came together effortlessly. The service was excellent. Our waitress was genuinely kind and handled our requests and modifications with ease — no attitude, no confusion, just attentive and on it. The chef was entertaining and engaging without going over the top (which we appreciated). The seating stations were great, the experience was smooth, and we were genuinely glad we tried it. If you’re looking for hibachi on the island with great service and a comfortable, fun vibe, Yamato is it. We’ll be back.
By far the best sushi place I have ever been to and I’ve been to every single sushi place in Houston and have had sushi in Japan. Their fish is super fresh. I highly recommend the shaggy dog and the spicy salmon roll. I’ve never had fresher salmon. They definitely set the standard for outstanding sushi.
This place was outstanding! Maggie our server was crazy awesome, we just asked for her to serve us what she would think we liked to eat and it did not disappoint! The chefs were also on point. I can’t recommend this place enough for atmosphere friendly staff and super delicious fresh sushi.
Sat at the bar and enjoyed some great sushi. Staff was friendly. Food was great.
Still the best restaurant on the island. Their sushi is world class. Better than Vegas and other high end locations in Houston. They always have fatty tuna and uni.
Been here since 2014, very nice experience , a lot of free parking space , reservations for regular tables or hibachi it’s a must because place is packed every single time ( that’s a sign of good business) Menu is extraordinary, lots and lots of options for everyone category of food Family friendly and more than welcome Prices not exaggerating Mat and Anna were our hosts for the night, very professional
30/10 we did only sushi, for 5 people. We each had our own appetizer and we ordered between 2-4 sushi orders each & 2 bottles of saki fuji flavored and 4 beers. We spent about $300 but we ate A LOT of food each (we haven't eaten all day). Honestly, the food.... was so so delicious. Probably the best cream crab puffs I've ever had. They melted right in the mouth. We had the crab stuffed mushrooms. I dont even like mushrooms and it was SO good. The texture was great. My personal plates were mostly from the seasonal menu. It felt like each dish was better than the last. We had the 3 kings, the fish tasted so fresh. After each piece I sat just to savor the taste. The only sushi plate they have on they're regular menu that I tried was the shaggy dog. Usually a simple so so roll. I took a bite not expecting much, it was phenomenal. I had to ask everyone at the table to try one piece. Everyone couldn't believe how delicious such a simple roll is. I am not sure if it's because they are so close to the beach but the sushi was so fantastic. Highly recommend if you like sushi and can appreciate the creativity they put into they're seasonal menus.
Great sushi place for a date night! We only had the sushi and a few drinks and it was a delightful evening. They have handled the COVID restrictions gracefully. Perfect ending to a beach date weekend!! Ask for any drink specials and try the Asian sprite!!
Went there for dinner, atmosphere reminds of Japan in 2000s, the food was good for the money, lychee sake paired great with everything!
Love it. The owners are awesome people, the chef's are great ,the staff are amazing. The food is always delightfully delicious and always surprising one of my favorite places to go.
I love Yamato! This restaurant is well built from foundation to service. The food is authentic and fresh. I have been to many sushi restaurants in my years, but none have came close to quality of Yamato. The service is friendly and helpful and the facility is clean. I would recommend this restaurant to my closest friends and family.
Anna was our waitress, she was awesome. Food is amazing. Some of the best of not THE best sushi I've had. Cannot brag enough about this place. Ask for Anna she is knowledgeable and friendly.
Alright yall. Normally I wont eat all of my hibachi. Veggies, scraps, you know... the usual. Lemme tell yall!! We. Tore. This. Up. Like a fat kid and Cake!! Lickin the plate!!! Im done. Time for a nap!
Anna was an amazing server!!! She did an excellent job and was so kind! Bella was also extremely attentive and did fantastic!
It embarrasses me as a BOI who lived in Galveston for 27 years to say that the first time I ever ate at Mario's Ristorante was a few nights ago. I've gone down 61st countless times, but not once have I ever set foot inside this longtime Italian culinary institution. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ordered from here, either. Mario's was on my radar for the evening on Wednesday after I toured the new Ball High (Class of 2000). I failed to resist the siren song of the dinner buffet, which takes place every Wednesday from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. For about $17, diners could have their pick of the five or so pizzas in addition to entrees, pasta, salads, and deserts. I decided to have a slice of each pizza -- cheese, pepperoni, supreme, meat lovers, etc. -- since I was a newbie to the establishment. The slices were the usual hand tossed and not too thick. The cheese-to-toppings ratio was pretty even. Fortunately, I enjoyed each, so much so that I felt stuffed as I worked on my third slice. After pizza, I assembled a plate consisting of fried fish, potatoes, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken pasta. My taste buds were continuously treated to straight-up Old World Italian deliciousness. I couldn't get enough of the fried fish and chicken pasta. It took me a while to finish the spaghetti because I was beyond the point of full. I had no choice but to forego the chicken masala and seafood rice pilaf. Mario's, which has existed since 1967, has the undeniable feel of an old school pizzeria. Guests can actually feel the warmth emanating from the kitchen as well as the staff. When dining in, be sure to ask for Wyatt. He'll make you feel right at home. Whitney is another person you ought to get to know also. I believe that a lot of my Wednesday evenings will be spent here.
We were recommended Mario’s from our Moody Gardens hotel bartender and they did not disappoint! We had a delicious meal with fried ravioli and cheese garlic bread appetizers, pizza and finished it with decadent cheesecake and chocolate cake. Everything was so fresh - we were literally watching them tossing pizza dough! Our waitress was wonderful too! Give this place a try!!
Mario’s is hands-down one of the best pizza spots in Galveston. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with friendly service and the warm, delicious aroma of fresh-baked pizza. Their crust is perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, and every topping tastes fresh and high-quality. We tried a couple of their specialty pies and were blown away, each one was packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, making it a great place to grab a meal with family or friends. Whether you’re a local or just visiting the island, Mario’s is absolutely worth the stop. We’ll definitely be back!
When y'all go to Galveston, I definitely recommend Mario's Ristorante. We went because I wanted some chicken Parm, but walking in you can smell the pizzas and we had to try them. They had some of the best deep dish pizza (they call it a Sicilian pizza). It has a thick crust that is crunchy yet extremely soft on the inside. And they are very generous with the toppings. Also super fast, we were in and out in 30 minutes. Great staff, never had an empty cup
Holy crap this was the best pizza I've ever had by far. My wife and I got the Sicilian 12x12 carnivore pizza and let me tell you they aren't wrong about making the best pizza. Somehow, they combined a thin crust surface texture with a deep dish bread thickness and a literal pile of meat in the center. Anytime we go to Galveston, we're coming back here. It's now part of our vacation experience. And the staff were awesome, too. Super nice people and incredibly on top of things. Much love to these people and their art!
We were in the mood for great Italian food and were not disappointed. We had the seafood stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer. They were served in a cream sauce with chopped mushrooms and there was plenty of seafood in the stuffing. My wife had the Lobster ravioli and she was blown away at the taste of the ravioli and the house-made sauce. I had what I consider a staple of Italian cuisine, maybe considered more of peasant Italian to some, but I love eggplant parmesan and Mario's did not let me down. The generous serving, paired with spaghetti and a rich, chunky tomato marinara was excellent and reminded me of great Italian restaurants in New Jersey. We had the Strawberry Pineapple cake served with a whipped cream topping that was the perfect ending to this wonderful meal.
There are some restaurants you go to for atmosphere. You may visit others for the food. As a foodie -- the food quality here is always awesome! It's not a fancy place, but there are almost 20 Italian restaurants on Galveston Island. For lunch, this is by far my fav. Yesterday, I got a glorious meatball sub -- it's enough for 2 meals!! If you're a tourist just visiting -- or recently moved to Galveston -- read on. What makes the food so good? They are 3rd generation Italians using quality ingredients (especially olives!) for over 50 years. Their pride shows in their food. Also -- a little known fact -- they have a wonderful LUNCH BUFFET Monday - Fridays for $14.25. It includes a complete salad bar, numerous hot dishes, and 5 or 6 kinds of pizza. All you can eat (but not take away)!! Super for hungry teenagers. They also do a BUFFET on Wednesdays from 5pm to 9pm. If you haven't tried these guys, you're missing one of Galveston's gems!
This restaurant was recommended by the gentleman that owns the condo that we're staying at this week, and we are so glad that he made the recommendation. Mario's is truly authentic Italian, and probably made one of the best pizzas I've ever eaten. We combined it with the Greek salad which was plentiful for two of us to share. We enjoyed our time at Mario's and the service was top shelf.
This place was amazing!! Our first time eating here and my whole family went a party of 15. The service was spectacular and our waitor was attentive to our needs. We all ordered something different and just shared a fork full from all the dishes we ordered. Alfredo tortellini, Lasagna, salad, pepperoni/Canadian bacon pizza, fried cheese, canoli, chocolate mouse cake, tirisamu cake, key lime, and strawberry cheese cake, etc. Everything we ordered was on point. The Alfredo tortellini the sauce was perfect not to thick and not runny. It was the perfect texture and the flavor was phenomenal. The Lasagna was perfect it had the right amounts of sauce and cheese. My kids loved the pizza. I highly recommend this place they had byfar the best tasting Italian food I have ever tasted. Service was friendly, attentive, helpful, and the environment was great.
My family and I really enjoyed Mario's Ristorante. We went a bit late for lunch while we were in town (about 1:00 pm) and the place wasn't too busy so there wasn't any wait. Our server was friendly and attentive, and even more importantly, all of the food exceeded our expectations, given the fact that it's a casual, not-too-fancy kind of Italian restaurant. I ordered the Spaghetti Mario (Italian sausage, mushrooms, one meatball, plum tomato marinara), my wife ordered the Eggplant Parmigiana, and my son and daughter ordered a "pizza your way" and the Meat Ravioli. We all agreed that the quality of the sauces and ingredients were memorably tasty and that the portion sizes were quite generous, given the prices (my wife and I both ended up just eating half of our food and bringing the rest home for dinner). I can honestly recommend Mario's if you're looking for a not-too-fancy, pleasing, affordable Italian dining experience. I would go back and give them a chance again the next time I'm in Galveston.
We were a little wary after walking in and seeing few other customers but the food was so delicious! The marinara on my spaghetti was really great and the meatballs were high notch! Both were probably homemade and so, so good. Salad was fresh, as was the bread. Even though we're only here a few days, we'll probably be back again soon.

Pricey but good atmosphere and service :) The grasshopper roll was very fresh and tasty. The chef had interactive activities and the servers were attentive. The fried rice was delicious, but I wasn’t too big a fan of the teriyaki chicken. I recommend trying the other options :)
We ordered takeout from Yamato. We got the teriyaki chicken, crazy maki, hurricane roll, salmon nigiri, and yellowtail nigiri. The nigiri was ridiculously overpriced at $9 per two pieces (which was NOT clearly written on the website). This was very disappointing. The sushi portions were moderate, but the flavors were good. The fish was clearly fresh. The teriyaki chicken was not too sweet, which we appreciated. The chicken was mixed with onions and mushrooms, and it came with rice and side vegetables (stir-fried cabbage and zucchini). Overall, we would not order again, as the price was excessive for the portions.
11/28/2025: For a restaurant with “ristorante” in the title, I expected it to have a little bit more of an Italian decor. They could’ve done more with the space. They have regular tables and booths available. A small bar is also available for seating. Upon entering, I used the restroom and washed my hands. No paper towels available and the hand dryer was not working. So far, we were not off to a good start. We ordered a glass of wine while we looked over the menu. We settled on the calamari for an appetizer. It was very chewy and served lukewarm. Even the marinara sauce was lukewarm warm. We ordered a second marinara sauce and it was a good temperature. The batter on the calamari was good, but the calamari itself was very chewy. It is large enough to split. We ordered the Mario’s Special. We wanted to substitute two of the toppings, but they told us it would be $2.25 extra for each. I don’t understand why it would be extra if we’re taking something off and just exchanging it, but they do have a disclaimer on the menu that states they do not substitute. Just one more way customer service is lacking these days. The only reason I’m giving them four stars is because the pizza was absolutely wonderful, even though we couldn’t get the “extra” toppings. I would describe the crust as hand tossed on the thin side. It was flavorful, crispy, and flaky. The toppings were fresh and the marinara sauce was perfect. The pizza saved the day! Wyatt was our server and I know he was just doing his job, but I also know he could have at least compromised with our requests. Maybe give us one “extra” topping? We still tipped him 20%. Our total bill was $60.59 before tip. I would go back for the pizza or even better, get delivery to the condo. If they want to spruce up the establishment, I would suggest giving it a more Italian feel. At least fix the bulbs on the “M” and the “a” for the exterior sign. We dined at “rio’s” last night.
To start, I noticed this restaurant on my entry into town and it caught my attention. I then noticed a second location while perusing the area and then a hotel neighbor brought home a pizza for their dinner. I ordered the next evening the shrimp dinner and fried mushrooms. They did a fantastic job on preparing both. The mushrooms were well breaded and large in size. The shrimp had a nice flaky like breading and the fries were the perfect addition. Perfect ranch sauce for the mushrooms and the tarter/cocktail had a good taste. I ordered pizza the next evening, the Mario special. Great crust, the perfect amount of sauce and toppings and it was a great balance. A large is plenty for two and you'll have left overs, possibl, if you pair with an appetizer as I did. Thank you for the experience!
We came here on a Thursday night. This is where you eat when you’re extra hungry and want to be FULL. We ordered buttery garlic bread, which had a tasty Italian seasoning. Our entrees were cheese pizza, Mario’s special pizza, beef ravioli, lasagna, and chicken Marsala. The pizza was the best, with a crust both soft and crispy. The lasagna and beef ravioli were good, but lacked salt and flavor. The chicken Marsala was tender, nicely cooked, and the sauce was good but not great. It’s a big restaurant with plenty of seating and parking and friendly servers.
This place is an absolute classic, my family has been coming here since we’ve vacationed in Galveston. The interior is classic family Italian and keeps a little history by sharing where the water hit when the restaurant flooded previously. The food is good although fairly mediocre. The pizza is cooked in a stone oven so the crust is very tasty but overall is nothing special. The marinara sauce is incredible and very fresh tasting so it’s good either as a dip for appetizers or for a pasta sauce. The real special treat here are the desserts, every single one is a treat. The cannolis are a classic and the creme inside is *so* tasty. My most recent visit though I tried the strawberry pineapple cake which was mind blowing my good. If it’s on the menu, order two and take one home- you’ll want it again later. Overall a great family spot and much better than your normal takeout pizza. Edit 8/13/23: Came back again for an end of summer dinner, quality was still amazing and our waitress was so kind. The chopped italian salad was amazing and the dressing is so vinegary. The minestrone and fried zucchini were favorite across the table 😊.

Well the people entering at the restaurant right after me was were very rude people... I know that is not the restaurants control but it seemed like everybody was certainly in a hurry on a Saturday night.. the food was not very tasty the dipping sauce for my shrimp to pora was brown gravy from a package is what it tasted like.. but the rice and the salad was fabulous for a $55 meal..😞😞 not tasty at all. 🤔
Food is good as always because we are locals and we have been customers for at least 7 more times. However we were treated very poorly without even a smile, a thank you or to ask for a water refills once. My wife was shocked that we even left a 16 percent tip.
