Monarch at Grand Galvez

Food was excellent. Service was fast and the waiter was really helpful despite it being his first day. We love the renovations of this historical hotel, it wasn’t our first visit and it won’t be our last.

Excellent atmosphere, service and food. I’ll never forget the red snapper and filet mignon—both prepared to perfection! A lovely experience.

This was an amazing meal. I was a bit hesitant on the mixed ratings but because we wanted to stay close to the hotel, we wanted to give it a try. Oh my gooooooodness the dinner was spectacular. The service wasn’t lightning fast but it was consistent and, when I’m in a nice restaurant I don’t want to feel rushed anyways. The restaurant was quiet and I can’t help but think how many people might be missing out on a great plate. We were there on a Monday so, it’s to be expected. Don’t sleep on this restaurant, trust me, you’ll have a wonderful meal in a beautiful space

Phenomenal service! Our waiter / Bartender / Master of Customer Service - Braden - exceeded all expectations during our dinning experience. We celebrated our 20 wedding anniversary here over the weekend. My wife has a gluten sensitivity and Braden made sure that she did not miss out on the amazing offerings at Monarch. He truly went above and beyond, injecting creativity and customization into our dining experience — it truly felt like a custom meal, just for the two of us. Six out of five stars.

Chef Sean was absolutely welcoming. Haley was an awesome waitress. The chefs specials were fabulous. Just the right amount of seasoning super tender fish. Can't recommend enough!!!

As guests at the Grand Galvez, we had 4 breakfasts and a dinner at Monarch. Food and service were excellent and the hostesses were very nice. I docked it a bit on atmosphere...the weather was unusually cold in Galveston that week and the motel couldn't keep up. I'm sure there's no issue in the warmer months.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Monarch Restaurant, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience from start to finish! Our server, Dustin, truly made the evening unforgettable. From the moment we were seated, Dustin's warm and welcoming demeanor set the tone for a perfect meal. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, offering insightful recommendations that perfectly matched our tastes. His attentiveness and genuine enthusiasm made us feel like VIPs throughout the evening. Dustin’s impeccable timing and friendly conversation added a personal touch that elevated our dining experience. The food at Monarch was, of course, fantastic, but it was Dustin’s excellent service that really stood out. His professionalism and care were evident in every interaction, and his dedication to ensuring we had a wonderful time did not go unnoticed. Thank you, Dustin, for making our visit so special. Monarch Restaurant has certainly earned a place at the top of my list, and I look forward to returning, hopefully with Dustin as our server once again!

My family and I were very impressed when we dinned here for brunch. We were greeted and seated by a Ms. Sandra who was very kind in directing us to our table.The cocktails presentation was beautifully designed and the brunch set up was immaculate. We will most definitely be returning for brunch.

This is the hotel restaurant for a beautiful and fancy hotel right next to the Seawall. It was the bar that came up when I searched oysters but we ate at the restaurant. My wife loved the oysters she got and I had a nice seafood pasta. We both had wine too. She had a Rose and I had a Malbec from Argentina. The food is a little pricy but it’s a fancy hotel so that’s expected. We had a very nice meal.

We glad the whole restaurant to ourselves pretty much . Five FIVE FIVE stars all the way . Our server Kylie was excellent and attentive to our needs . The Salads were delicious and Gumbo was the best I have ever eaten . My wife ordered the Fried seafood platter and prepared perfect . Delicious food and great service. So nice to get great service and food in the same triip . Look forward to coming back . Thank you Kylie for excellent service.

Susanna and her team hosted an amazing brunch. The crab legs and shrimp were fantastic, but the bottomless mimosas were a co-star! I will definitely be back. Ps. The bread pudding is a must!

One the best brunches in the Houston area. James and Justin were incredible. They truly exemplify excellent service. James took the time to tour my girlfriend through the brunch stations. Justin spared no expense to ensuring we had a top notch experience. As for the food, you have from snowcrab to prime rib. Plus bottomless mimosas. Treat yourself don't cheat yourself.

The food was great! I got pasta, my MIL got shrimp, which were huge, and my husband got steak which was also huge. My son got pancakes which he was thrilled about. Beautiful place to take pictures and explore. Definitely coming back on our next vacation to Galveston.

We had a wonderful experience here! Our server, Kylie, was such a pleasure. She went out of her way to make sure our stay in Galveston was enjoyable! My wife and I both ordered a ribeye steak. We both agreed that it was by far the best steak we've eaten at a restaurant. We don't say this lightly. Prior to living in the town we live in now we used to go out to Del Frisco's in Downtown Fort Worth. Monarch's steak last night beat it hands down, no question. Thank you, Kylie! We'll stop back by the next time we're in town!

My server Sarah Ann was the best!!! We had the best time at dinner here and she recommended some really amazing wines to us to pair with our dinner!!! We will definitely be coming back.

Delicious meal. Another great meal in Galveston. First time I've ever had oysters. Very very good. 👍 Roosevelt Refresher Lemon Meringue Martini Oysters Rockefeller with the surprise twist of salsa And we split the Braised Short Ribs Excellent!

Love this hotel. Tjis was my first time to have their brunch!! Wow!! Way worth the price....excellent food, service and variety. All their food has such a fresh taste and beautifully presented. Never seen such a huge variety of choices at a brunch before...crab legs for days!!

Very nice experience. Wonderful, attentive service and the food was generally good. For food that was not cooked right, they apologized politely and made amends very quickly. I appreciated that very much. The hotel is also very nicely decorated for Christmas now!

It was a great experience to go there. We got breakfast and they gave us a coffee at the start. The continental breakfast was great, same with the shrimp and grits. Definitely recommend going!!! :)

We had an incredible dinner with great service, thanks to our server Poppy! Overall, a great option, especially for an excuse to see the historic Hotel Glavez. The kitchen did run out of one of the sides, so we all had to substitute. It was a Monday night and not very busy, yet service was still pretty slow.

The BLT was hard and cold. We sat ffo an hour waiting for our food. The atmosphere was splendid.

There was initially a longish wait for service, and it took a few minutes to get in sync with the waiter. The reviews prepared us with low expectations. However, drinks from the bar were excellent and the food and service did not disappoint. Large but not excessive portion size and generous seafood portions. Only negative was a very strong perfume scent of unknown origin.

Good food. Could be great. We wish: 1) Specials were introduced, just like the next table, instead of being told “you seemed very ready to order;” 2) Sauce were on the side, like requested; 3) The plates for appetizers were taken away before the entrees arrived. We certainly appreciated being offered a free drink at the end, and hope our feedback could be appreciated.

Our food was definitely not worth what we paid. My daughter ordered her steak medium rare, but came well done. The snapper I had was also very overcooked and flavorless. The setting was lovely and our server was pleasant. But the server we started with vanished and we ended up with a replacement. I don’t think it was the replacement’s fault that we ended up not really being checked on. I would not come back to The Monarch even though we have loved staying at the Grand Galvez. The food was expensive and poor quality.

The food was great and the restaurant/hotel lobby are beautiful! Unfortunately service was EXTREMELY slow multiple days. We stayed at the hotel and had breakfast twice and dinner once. (We would have had breakfast a third day, but after being told it would be a 10 minute wait, waiting 20 minutes, and being told it would be another 25 minutes before we could be seated, we left.) We couldn’t tell if the restaurant was severely understaffed or if they just are extremely slow for some reason. However I will say that if you can get in and don’t mind a long wait (they do take dinner reservations), the food was excellent. We enjoyed several different breakfast items, and for dinner had excellent flounder, steak, and bacon-wrapped shrimp. The building is also gorgeous.

Drinks are made better at Founders Bar down the hall. Gumbo was served tepid - almost too cold - and the rice within was crunchy. Wife ordered the arugula salad ($17) plus chicken (add $3). Server said half salad was half price. Bill came and it was $15. When questioned server said that only applied to the salad part, the chicken was still add $3. Problem is that comes to $11.50 not $15.00 and they refused to adjust it. All in all, one salad, one bowl of soup, and one average quality cocktail ($14) totaled almost $60 after tax and tip. Won’t go out of my way to patronize here again.

This restaurant looks elevated but the food & service however is not. Waiter would not write down what we ordered and kept messing up our order bringing us the wrong thing and miss bringing us items. Also the food quality for the price is a disappointment. We even tried for breakfast in our room and Dennys serves way better quality than Monarch. $70 for eggs and French toast. Not worth it. It seemed like the toast had been prepared and was sitting under warmers. Also the menu on the Marriott website is wrong and what they show is not what they actually have at the restaurant. The only good thing about the restaurant besides the way it looks are the drinks.

The lack of patrons on Saturday night should've been a red flag. Of all the places to eat in Galveston we came here. I got the market catch red snapper, a tiny, dry portion; bland green beans, and lukewarm crinkle French fries. You guys really can't even be bothered to cut and fry your own potatoes on a $40 plate?? The setting is nice and the help is friendly, but my entree was cafeteria quality.

Boring plating, no flavor food. Unfortunately this place does not wow whatsoever. There is a strong perfume/cleaning product smell that distracts from any enjoyment. Staff is kind but it doesn’t make up for the food sadly. Decor follows the theme of the hotel, but fake plants ruin the authenticity.

Renovations are gorgeous and loved the main lobby bar so expected the restaurant to follow suit. Service took a long time and I had to send back my "fresh catch" snapper twice because it came out overcooked looking like a breaded fish stick. So no dinner for me, husband's burger was sub par for the price. Pity because again, the hotel is a thing of beauty.

I wish I would’ve read more reviews before going to this place. We ate out every meal as most vacationers do and this was the only place we hated. From the super slow service to the two different drinks (we ordered the same drinks twice) we had to wait forever for. We literally watched a couple come in after us get seated ordered wine and their food before we were ever even acknowledged. I really wanted dessert but the waitress took over half an hour AFTER we were done eating to send ANOTHER waitress to our table to check on us. Pretty certain this restaurant (and probably the hotel as a whole) is not safe for green book travelers if you know what I mean.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Grand Galvez and, naturally, wanted to try the beautiful Monarch restaurant. Unfortunately, our experience was quite disappointing, confirming what many reviews say the food is expensive and bland. We went before 11 am, hoping for some breakfast or brunch since we had just woken up and were still at the hotel. However, the restaurant was only serving the lunch menu, which was a bit of a letdown. We started with two appetizers. The crab cake was decent and about the only good thing we tasted, a 4 out of 5. However, the ceviche was terrible; it had a strange sweet and sour taste we've never had in ceviche before. To make matters worse, the chips served with it were stale. Even after sending them back, the next plate of chips were also stale! So we just gave up. For our main courses, we ordered a shrimp po'boy and a fish and chips plate, both of which were bland. While the restaurant itself is very pretty and has a rich, luxurious aesthetic, it simply isn't worth the high price for such uninspired food.

Estuve acá y tenía alta perspectiva del lugar y no lo fue .No tienen estética para servir la comida en el plato y al menos mi trago la naranja decorativa estaba horrible , trabajo como bartender y conozco muy bien la presentación que se le debe dar al cliente con cada trago ,mi esposo tampoco pudo degustar lo que pidió ,en relación con la calidad y precio es terrible pensé tener más sabor por lo que se pagó .

The food was terrible!!! The service was ok. But the food needs so much help. If I could give negative stars I would.

Food and drinks were overpriced, bland and disappointing. Do not be fooled by the potential due to being part of the Grand Galvez hotel. Stay away, huge disappointment.

Food was horrible Wait long

The restaurant is super cute but our meals were not good, the oysters were not something we could bring ourselves to finish, the service was the worst experience of any restaurant I’ve been to in a decade. The restaurant was not busy and the waiter tried to keep anyone that paid cash’s change on top of the 20% gratuity without anyone offering after awful service. He didn’t even keep our waters filled once AND had to come out and ask us what we ordered to get the bill put together. For the price the service and quality wasn’t even in the same realm. This hellish experience went on for almost three hours. We ordered a pizza after and went to bed.

So much flies at the buffet and no one did anything . Very unsanitary and nasty . Flies on the seafood and fruits. Get there at 12.30 and most of the buffer food already gone. Very limited options for 89$ per person. They also charge kid the same price as well. We been coming here for a few years but the quality is clearly going down hill. Needless to say this the last time we come here.

So my complaint is I drove 90 minutes to have brunch and they did not let me know I couldn’t wear golf shorts in to brunch. They did not let us know via the confirmation/reservation of the daytime dress code.. Daytime by the beach shorts make sense. I’d understand for dinner. I’ve had the food there it’s great. And the building is wonderful.

Horrible wait time !! Over 50 minutes for a steak is unacceptable. This place made me feel like I did not belong . And I do not patronize places that prioritizes the Caucasian guest over me. Best of luck but they are not for all people ...

The food looked great however the service was so bad we wound up leaving. Too bad.

Disappointed The restaurant and hotel renovations are beautiful, but the staff is inattentive and unpolished. Extended wait for seating, warmish eggs and cold coffee. I particularly enjoyed the smooth jazz and big band standards piped overhead while MTV’s Ridiculousness played on the unavoidable TV screen. Pure elegance.
