Good morning ☀️🌞😃 A good way to know that a restaurant is fantastic is when you go back after 6 years and it’s just as good or even better. I have been away traveling for a while and when I came back to visit my family this year my niece asked if I could take her out to eat sushi 🍱 🍣. Without a doubt I knew that she would be able to learn everything necessary on what is best by having Steve take care of her. He was on his day off however everyone else was on it 💯% and maybe even better than the boss man himself haha wink 😉. Thank you 🙏🏼 for a fantastic culinary journey and catering to my niece, whilst teaching her the important fundamentals of the beautiful art of sushi. Your biggest fan and loyal customer Ellery A. Upon a visit to Pismo beach, we came across this wonderful gem of a restaurant. Amazing sushi, the freshest I had for a long time. The seafood salad was out of this world so fresh and unique, also the fresh oysters tasted like the ocean very fresh and good. The sashimi platter to die for. Everything we ordered was unique and awesome. Server was very friendly and good. Definitely we’ll be back for more on our next visit to Pismo beach.
Loved it! Best sushi experience that I've had in a long time. Fresh fish, beautiful flavors. Also, order the fresh wasabi, worth the $3 extra. Outdoor seating area is nice for those that aren't yet comfortable being indoors. Will definitely be back soon!
The only place I will go for sushi. Consistently the best sashimi, rolls, and customer service. Worth the 30 minute drive.
My grandson and I went here on Valentine's day! We had the deep fried Sushi fish rolls. Chicken teriyaki with rice and tempura veggies. All good! This place is so busy all the time that my grandson and I remarked it would be great if they could get into a bigger place! I also had some red wine that was very good
I grew up on the central coast and have been frequenting Yamatos (and Shins) for some time. This place really never changes for the exeption that they don't use Polaroid film when taking there famous birthday pic. Steve (the owner) was still at the helm behind the sushi bar and the sushi still comes in long strips which is always nice. Stop by on your birthday and make sure to tell the waitress it's your special day! You will have a happy happy birthday!! Cheers!!
What a great find! We were passing through the area and stopped at this gem. Best sushi we have had on the Central Coast. Authentic Japanese chef and great service. So happy we found this place.
Best sushi ever. Love being part of the family. They are the best Update 2/17/18 We hadn't been there for six months and it was like we never missed a weekend. The Yamato family proved once again that they are the best in the five cities. Steve, Sam, Cristine,, Nate, and the all too beautiful "Lauren " were on their game again. Thanks all for the wonderful evening. Always fun and delicious. Steve's creative dishes and knife skills are second to none. You got to go!
Incredible evening during Covid season! I’m so glad we chose this restaurant tonight. We had amazing service and hospitality. It really was an amazing experience for us. They were so generous to surprise us with a fabulous appetizer on the house, it was so unexpected. I love their vibe and generosity. The sushi was amazing! I enjoyed the sunshine roll and Grover roll, along with drink special, large beer with Sake $10. See you tomorrow. Much obliged 👏👏👏👏👏
Absolutely amazingly delicious sushi with gorgeous presentation and excellent service. One of my favorite restaurants for a reason!!
This is the “Cheers” of sushi restaurants! Steve and his wife Ann do an amazing job. The fish quality never fails.
Good food, great staff. Very attentive service staff with great fun attitudes and some incredible food creations. The saki ain't bad either.

5.0 🌟 Food Quality and Taste 4.0 🌟 Menu offering 4.0 🌟 Food Portions 5.0 🌟 Staff $$$ A hole-in-the-wall restaurant could be the next best Japanese restaurant in Grover Beach. They offer quality and a variety of creatively curated sushi and sashimi. The chef prepared us a special tray of sashimi that includes fatty tuna and wagyu beef that melts in your mouth. Everything we ordered was fantastic, except the Salmon Skin Salad and Seafood salad. They were ok but could use better greens, and it lacks solid salad ingredients to make it worth it. The place may lack ambiance, but the food will wow you. I saw a lot of comments about the portions being small. But the truth is the amount of food is just right, the quality of the food here is better, but it's pricier than other local Japanese restaurants. If you're used to big chunky rolls packed with rice, you won't get it from this place. Overall I give Yamato at least a 4.0-4.5 star. Top-notch quality food with good service though it lacks ambiance and some items on the menu is pricey.
Decent Japanese restaurant near downtown Pismo beach. Food overall was good. Unagi was amazing. Albacore roll wasn't out favorite as the combination of flavors didn't blend well for us. Spicy rolls weren't spicy but quality of fish was good. A bit on expensive side - sushi is generally expensive.. It was super dark inside and a bit difficult as light and dark contract made it difficult to have a normal conversation with group you come with.
Although the restaurant is very nice, it is way too small, just like the restaurants in Japan 😂. I bet that you might have to wait a long time to get in if you arrive during peak time. The food was good. Especially the uni was very buttery and fresh. The only thing about this restaurant that I don't like is the furniture; the chair cover was covered in stains. Hopefully, they will replace everything to give the restaurant a cleaner appearance.

The place is small but with the patio seating it looked amazing. Sushi chef on point greeting everyone in a Japanese tradition. Got my cold Asahi, wife order the roll which looked phenomenal and we got oyster shooters. Unfortunately my meal never made it. They had the order stuck in the printer for 45 minutes. Decided to leave and experience the beautiful day in Grover Beach. Maybe next time. Pricing on the menu was pricey but I can't say worth it or not. Never tasted it. :(
Somewhat disappointing! Not as authentic as we had expected, a bit fusion. The restaurant smelled kind of greasy and the floor was kind of sticky. Wish it was cleaner. Service staff was friendly and attentive. The quality of sashimi was average and so was the flavors.
We ordered the Mixed Tempura, Galbi Ramen, Cheese Golden California, and Sushi Combo B. Mixed Tempura: about 6 pieces of vegetables and 2 shrimp. $13, and it was pretty good. Galbi Ramen: $17. I wasn't too impressed with this. The portion size is great. The Korean BBQ beef and fish cakes were good, but there wasn't anything about it that set it apart from a bowl of ramen I could make at home. Cheese Golden California: $14. Way too much cream cheese, and the avocado didn't appear to be that fresh. I added quite a bit of Wasabi to it, and despite too much cream cheese, I quite liked it. Sushi Combo B: $34. The nigiri came out several minutes after the Salmon Skin Sushi roll, so long that we thought they had forgotten about it. The pieces are large with a bit of Wasabi and lemon added for seasoning. For the price, it was disappointing. The location itself is nice, clean, and cheerful. Service was pretty quick and helpful. There was a mistake made that said we had 22 guests, with an added $20 "large party fee." This was fixed after bringing it up, but I wonder if that happens often and if people catch it. Overall, the price on everything was expected, the service was good, and the food was just ok.

Rude service, very loud atmosphere. Diner area is very small, lots of people hanging around outside creating a unpleasant dining experience. Sushi was very good but the grill food was sub par. Chicken taste reheated, sushi came out a full 20 minutes ahead of the grill items, plus the ran outta rice so one plate didn't get rice till we were done. Would not recommend and don't choose to revisit.

Ordered Ginger Pork Ramen. Looked and tasted like miso ramen. The pork was not seasoned. They sliced it from a pork lion in thick slices and it was so dry. The noodles were too hard. Very disappointing! Not worth the money. The restaurant smelled like a fish market.
