I am so glad I finally pulled over! I’m constantly commuting between Fort Worth and Waco, and the name of this spot finally piqued my interest. If you’re looking for authentic home-cooked vibes, this is it! I kicked things off with the stuffed egg rolls—tangy, rich, and loaded with cream cheese. Even though the ranch was a bit runny, the flavor was spot on with those crispy shells. Then came the main event: the fried catfish. OMG. The portions are massive! I got two huge fillets over white rice with fried okra and mac on the side. Honestly? It’s easily some of the best catfish I’ve ever had—perfectly seasoned, crunchy, and amazing with a squeeze of lemon. The mac was a little loose, but the flavor was still delightful. Major props to my server, too; they were super attentive even with a few large parties in the house. Just a heads-up: the bar is smoking-friendly, so I opted for the dining room to keep my lungs (and my food) clear. The bathrooms could use a little TLC, but for food this good? It’s a must-stop off I-35!
Cozy, comfy, casual restaurant with good food options including home-cooked, Tex-Mex, and more. Sandwiches and hamburgers looked good here. We enjoyed our steak fajita quesadilla, IH-35 special, and pot roast as well as our sides. Daily food and drink specials. Lunch specials during the week. Clean and country themed restroom. Our waitress was attentive and helpful. Onion rings are huge, and flavorful! Also recommend the broccoli rice casserole. The appetizers also seemed appetizing, but we’ll have to try some next time as we weren’t too hungry today.
Ordered the Bubbalo Chicken Sandwich. Upon first looks I was disappointed because the Sandwich came as a plain fried chicken sandwich with the Buffalo sauce (Frank's Red Hot) on the side and not dipped in the sauce already. I love Frank's Red Hot so I slathered up the fried chicken brest and added the side of ranch as well. This is the perfect example of why not to judge a book by its cover. The 1st bite and I was in love. The chicken is so moist and tender, the exact right amount of breading and the bun is a good solid bun holding up to the sauce. This is my new favorite Buffalo chicken sandwich. Sorry Popeyes.
We were traveling through Hillsboro, TX and wanted a bite to eat at a non fast-food place, and found this place right off of I-35, and we were glad we did! The parking lot was full which reassured us we made a good choice, and the positive reviews reinforced that. Upon entering the facility, we were promptly greeted, and brought to our table in the cozy dining room. Our server greeted us promptly and took our drink order. We chose to order the meatloaf entree along with the chicken finger dinner. Our drinks and meals arrived promptly, and the meals were hot and fresh. Definitely check this place out if you're in the area and craving a good home-cooked meal.
This place is simply great. The wife and I were traveling through and stopped for the night at the nearby IHG hotel. Decided to eat here as it was a 2 minute walk across the parking lot to get there. Absolutely worth the effort. The staff are friendly and go out of their way to make you feel right at home. Atmosphere is family friendly and ultra-casual. Food, however is OUT Of THIS WORLD!!. For example, my wife doesn't like fried pickles, but she loved the ones from Lone Star Cafe. We both ordered a hamburger, and they were great, but most of all the sourdough bun was just the best ever. Yum. I could go on, but you get the point. We will definitely stop by again whenever we are passing through Hillsboro, Tx.
We saw the mixed reviews! Our experience was great. The place was a little busy but we were able to sit in the bar. Eric hurried over and got the order. The fried mushrooms are amazing! I was full by the time the salad got there. My husband said the pinto beans were spot on! The water tastes good, they make their own Ranch Dressing (has Mayo), the music was good and kept changing genre. The grilled chicken salad with veggies on the side was so delicious. The zucchini was grilled to perfection, soft with just a bit of crispy. The place made our day with fast service and great food. Thank you Eric! We will be back.

Great stop on our way to Dallas. Lots of healthy options as well. I had the grilled chicken salad and it was excellent.
Excellent home cooked food and waitresses was very friendly and helpful. Very clean dining area.
This is our second time coming this week and everything we have had so far is 10/10. I'm so glad we stopped by. Good food, good drinks, laid back vibe. Blacken redfish tacos were amaaaaaazing!
We are here today. I had the Fiesta taco salad. It was the Best In Town!!!! Service was excellent even though it was busy

The food was great, and the prices were reasonable. The service was great. Our water was awesome and met our every need.
This is one of the best restaurants in HIllsboro. Their chicken fried chicken and onion rings are to die for. Never have had a bad meal here.
Staff was attentive. Food was good not over seasoned or greasy. I had the chicken fried steak and my wife had the I35 surprise. Fried mushrooms for the appetizer.
This restaurant is the about the halfway point between where my best friend and I live. We have chosen this location four different times for dinner. The food is good and consistent, so we keep going back! We've tried dishes from pot roast to fried cod and burgers. The service is always attentive and friendly.
I'd say it was a solid 4, took a time or 5 to see it. Service is really fast, but sometimes seems forgetful. Sundays are particularly inconsistent, but never really any issues. I'd say 85% of the time my food was on point. Those onion rings tho. AMAZING!!! Don't get the catfish if you're really expecting catfish. Maybe it was late and didnt think I'd notice. Whatever it was, wasn't bad. Prices are pretty fair, plenty of seating and parking spots. The lady at the door could stand to find a lil better personality. Shes never very personable. Over all its a good place to eat. Just has some minor things, but check it out if you come thru town. 👍
We enjoy stopping in here every time we're in Hillsboro. We had a party of 11 and waited less than 5 minutes for a table on a Saturday at 5:30. The appetizers and entrees were large and cooked to perfection. The waitress was friendly but could've been more attentive to refill drinks and remove leftover plates. My nephew is on a very strict diet and requested just a steak with no seasoning except salt which they accommodated.
The food is good. They always forget something on take out, but I neglect to check order, so 50% on me. I wish they had a website with updated menu. Some good things not available anymore. The employ…

Absolutely nothing remarkable about the food. We sat in the bar area don’t do that it was so noisy. Yes, I know better. Staff very friendly and helpful. Just not impressed and I won’t be back.
Needs work. She did a great job considering her first day with very minimal training if any. Cooks have very little ambition to put out good food and the atmosphere follows suit
We were traveling through town and spent the night. Decided to try this place since it had good reviews. Unfortunately we were not impressed. My wife had the meatloaf which turned out to be very dry and tasteless. I had an open faced sandwich which was the special of the day. It was mostly bun which I did not eat. The topping and especially the chicken was kinda scarce. The service was good and we got seated right away. Would probably not go back, if we lived in the area
The food was good. But the price for a drink was outrageous. If you want steak sauce you have to ask for it and they bring you a little container of it. When we left I told them this is the first time I have eaten at a steak house and Not been served some type of bread, or rolls or cornbread. Was told I should have asked if wanted some. That is not how it should roll. It's one of the things I love about eating out. Rolls that melt in your mouth. The chicken fried steak was very small. But it was delicious. The onion rings are the best.
We were traveling to Waco and was craving fresh country food. We saw this place off the highway and made a stop. Wait time to get a table wasn’t long. Wait time for the food however took longer than we thought. We asked for medium cooked burger and instead got well done and buns were too cooked.

It had been a very long time since I'd eaten at a Lone Star cafe. Sadly, while the service was amazing, the food was not. The only thing we ate and didn't toss was the fried okra and the broccoli rice casserole. I had the chicken fried steak strips but they were over breaded and the meat was very tough. My son had the highway plate and my husband had the chicken fried steak. All 3 meats were too tough and chewy to eat. I was so very sad.
This place has had less quality of service and food the past few visits. I think the apathetic service of not being checked on, slow to bring our check or to go containers, and barely a smile makes the food seem a little worse. The fried catfish was thin, mostly breading with little meatiess and the redfish was small portioned for the $20+ meal. The mashed potatoes are great but the onion ring portions have shrunk. Unfortunately, after multiple attempts to regain our enthusiasm, we have decided we will not be returning.
The service was wonderful but the food was below mediocre which was very disappointing considering the prices. My chicken was so overcooked and dry it was inedible, several pieces of the grilled veggies were bad, the potato skins were soggy with extended tough & chewy bacon. Very unfortunate considering we're just traveling through but we're told by several people that the Lone Star Cafe was the place to go.

Can you give a zero for service? Poor service. Ate there 2/19 Took over an hour to get food and eat burger. When checking out the waitress took card, charged me 49 and some change. 5 minutes later charged me 62 plus. When she came back I asked why I was double charged, told oh just a mistake. You will get your money back next week. I asked the manager, a waitress showed up 5 minutes later, never introducing herself as a manager. Said it was just a mistake. When I asked why I wasn’t just charged the difference, was told she couldn’t. But they as don’t produce the original refund paperwork either. She got mad and stormed off says well you probably will get all of it back. We waited a couple minutes and after another table walked out, we right behind them. Food was awesome. The server we had was horrible and the supposed manager was either a bad manager or just faking it. We live in the area so sadly that place is crossed off our list!
